- Giving this cockapoo puppy a teddy bear type trim. Cute rounded face, clean cut but not too short shaggy body clip.
To groom I use a 3/4” length on the majority of his body, scissor the paws and head and face with rounded shears. A 30 to clean paw pads, a 7F for the sanitary trim, and a 5 for clipping high-tangle spots under front legs close to the body to reduce friction that cause matting.
I used blending shears and straight shears as well for his grooming. But you could definitely copy this cut using just a 3/4” clipper blade, the 10 that came with your clippers and a decent pair of curved shears for the face.
I don’t show it, but Jax the cockapoo was shampooed twice with Plum Silky by Nature’s Specialties and conditioned with the matching conditioner. He had his ears cleaned out using Zap by Kelco. I brushed his teeth with Tropiclean.

I groomed for 10 years, and I loved to see the comment below "now I understand why grooming is so expensive" That was the most frustrating thing, customers had NO IDEA the amount of effort and patience that went into each dog. I was doing 6-7 dogs a day.
Groomers don’t make enough for the amount of labor they do. It may seem untrue to people, but it’s really hard work and hard on the body. My hands and arms are sore, wrists get tired-it’s exhausting and I only groom a couple dogs a week!!
Not only is it time intensive and muscle intensive and you stand all day, you’re hyper aware the whole time because you’re keeping someone else’s dog safe. So it is mentally exhausting too. And then the equipment is a fortune and needs to be constantly maintained, and you have to be steady and artistic as well!!
But I had no clue until I groomed a dog! The one good thing about me teaching owners at my home to groom is that they usually decide not to do it and then they’re really appreciative of their groomers! 😂

That's why I always tip my groomer really well- better than for my own hair.
I have 2 Cockapoos age 16 and 14 and have spent many hundreds of hours grooming them myself through the years. It has been a job that I wouldn't wish on anyone. I love them, but I will never have another dog who has to have their hair cut every 8 weeks. I'm getting old now and can barely stand to do it anymore, (it's backbreaking and they don't cooperate) Having a dog that needs to be groomed like this costs many thousands of dollars more through their lifetimes if you don't groom them yourself. Just something to think about if you have kids that will need to attend college someday, or if you need to be saving for retirement.
Now I understand why grooming is so expensive! Thank you so much for all of your videos. You offer a wealth of information for dog owners, and especially new pup owners.

Theris Nogods (comment below) actually understood my intention, which was to say after watching that video I now understand why I pay close to $100 for a groom for my 15 lb dog. I didn't really understand until I watched the video. Not rude.
I just watch your video for the umpteenth time and decided to groom my Billy. This was the best grooming job I've done. Thank you for all the steps. I've purchased the correct clippers and all the blades. I had all the sheers so I was ready. He looks beautiful. Thank you for all your help.

I'm also a groomer and I'm also impressed, you have good technique! I'd recommend using a comb for the face, like to pull out the hairs instead of using your fingers, they're really cheap and help a lot. I also use it sometimes to check lines, kind of like a ruler, for extra precision.

Very impressed. I was a hair dresser for 40 years but I don’t think I could attempt this. My puppy is a nightmare to even brush ! I have been unable to take Teddy to be groomed during the covid 19 crisis and had hoped to tackle this at home. I really don’t think it will be possible

It’s so obvious how much you love these pups. Not at all the norm on the videos I’ve watched, unfortunately. You’d think that after 25 years of cutting human hair, I wouldn’t need any homework study for cutting our new Cavapoo puppy’s hair, but this video was really helpful. The tools of our trades are very so similar but the techniques are not. For example, I never shear cut hair that I’m not holding between my index and middle finger. Freehand shear work takes a lot of talent and confidence - especially with a squirmy little dog. I guess I gotta get some curved shears too. Well done!
I bet you could pull the hair taught between your fingers and may even get a better cut if you do that, I feel like it might be harder with a squirmy dog and that might be the reason we take a much less exact approach!
I am curious, as we will use that technique when we scissor a drop coat all over the body, it’s very similar to giving a layered haircut.
But still different!! I’m still trying to learn to cut my kids’ hair at home and lemme tell you, haha, I do not have the talent you guys have!!
I bet you’ll pick up on this so quick. It’s a lot like sculpture. It can be so relaxing and artistic!
Start by getting the puppy fed and exercised and in a good mood and that goes a long way for table training. The biggest help is working with a compliant pupper. Expect the first several table training sessions to be short. End on a good note and don’t worry if you only got 10% of the job done! You’ll get there! By a couple mos of training your pup will be a sleepy, sweet and relaxed little client for you ❤️
Honestly someone else said this of all the videos I see of how to groom your Cockapoo this has to be the the most understanding. I’m a new Cockapoo owner and trying to learn myself. I always had Poms and I thought they were high maintenance but I believe now Cockapoo’s are. It seems they need to be groomed more often that’s just my opinion. But thank you! Now let’s see how I do😂 it can always grow back right.
I have had poms too and cockapoos are ABSOLUTELY more work to groom! But you’ll get the hang of it! ❤️

Just discovered your videos and so far, they are the most informative I’ve seen. This is the exact cut I’ve always gotten on my dogs. I typically like a little more taking off around the eyes and above the nose (snout?). He is a beautiful dog.
I like the one length all over look. It's clean, easy to maintain, and the dog doesn't have to stand on a table for over an hour while we sculp ad nauseam with scissors. So I would buzz with comb attachment.
I totally love the shaggy shears groomed look, sooo cute on Cockapoos. But the clippers shorter cut is definitely better for summer months. 👍🏼
I totally agree! They're soooo cute all shaggy. But it is also nice not to always have the water everywhere when they take a drink during the summer and cram their whole face in the bowl and then put their faces all over you and you get covered in water and slobber :-)

Loved this video! Jax is so beautiful. I can appreciate the work my groomers did with my cockapoo Chester. My hubby and I would either have him cut like a poodle or a cocker spaniel because he looked adorable either way. Seeing the work done here I wouldn't even elect to trying it myself, lol. I didn't realize the paw area was so sensitive, as that was the only time Jax whimpered a bit. The groomer earns her money.
Fabulous cut and so gentle with the dog. My 20 week cockerpoo just had a groom and was returned to me like a poodle. really short and I was so upset. cried all afternoon. I expected her to look like this teddy bear look but she's sheared right down. I comb her every day so she was not matted. Your poo boy looks fabulous.

Grooming is harder when you have a really young puppy like my 8 month cockapoo she never stays still so it takes both of us to groom her,one to hold her and the other to groom,we use scissors on her face and she lets us but as soon as the clippers come out shes off on one and fidgets bigtime....ears next,i fancy doing the teddy cut she looks so cute....😊❤😊❤

Love this. You are so patient & give great detail when needed. I kind of like the shaggy look, but it doesn't last long, so short with Teddy Bear face for our Bud. Watching because of the Stay Home Stay Safe edict because of COVID 19, hoping we can groom our cockadoodle at home. You make it look easy, but I know it's not.

I would so definetly let her groom my dog she is soooo sweet with him. That is the way i am with my dogs, i talk to them and kisss them too. She calms the dog and make him feel safe.

This is an old comment, but I'm looking at these videos now because all of the groomers near me are closed, and i'm getting desperate for my poor lil toy poodle. Thinking of doing it myself.... I just watched the Dede Croy poodle video, and holy crap , you're right. I actually hope every one of her clients sees how she treats their pets so roughly so they never go back. This clip is so much better! And not to mention this groomer actually gave the pup a cute cut instead of just buzzing them brutally.
Dede is actually hated within the grooming community. She treats animals absolutely terribly, has no regard for their coat types and will do anything for money.

I like the look you gave him. .when I got my first dog, I found him at the SPCA in San Francisco and he turned out to be the best dog. He let me shear him like a sheep and when he got tired, I did the sides and flipped him over and did the other. He was the best...he was a Tibetan Terrier.

I highly recommend starting the grooming, daily brushing, clipping nails as soon as possible and often so they get used to it.

I'm learning to groom my three little ones - small terrier mix and two shi tzus. The shi tzus hate having their faces done and fight me all the time. Its quite a challenge! Slowly making an investment in clippers and shears. Wish my little ones were as cooperatie as Jax!
Nice cut. I use the blades where possible as my scissor skills aren't great on the legs. I think the blades give a beautiful even finish. I normally use comb attachment s for the head. Saves loads of time and again you get a nice even cut with very little scissoring to do. No 10 blade always for armpits for safety

Flicka Mom sorry for taking so long to reply!! I really like the basic Andis clipper with the cord. They’re light enough that they don’t make you exhausted and they have enough power to get the job done fast.
I never use ceramic blades. Stick with stainless steel. Ceramic just won’t cut. You’ll be there forever pulling on the fur instead of cutting.
If you have the money to splurge, Buttercut Blades by Geib are the absolute best. Get them in a 3F and you can do the whole body in that cut and hand scissor the face and legs and you’re done with a lovely clip.
Nice scissors are also a plus. Cheap scissors really just cost you more money in the long run. Any cheap blade from Amazon would be about the same as any other. Curved and straight shears are the most useful as a new groomer. Blenders and chunkers are great when you’re ready to spend a bit more time, your dog is trained to stay still and not make you nuts, and you’re up to refining your art.
I wouldn’t bother with cheap chunkers or blenders. Stick with Geib or kenchii and you won’t be sorry. Skip anything “Chris christenson” just paying for a designer label and the products aren’t as good as the price pretends they are 😉

For my girls i use a 7# on the body a blue comb attachment on the legs. Peach on the head and beard then scissor everything.
But for most of my cockapoos clients its usualy either a peach or blue all over as its easier for them to maintain. But still looks cute.

I prefer the bit longer so the hair is more scruffy like a teddy bear without being too long. I have a 5mth Cavoodle and I’m grooming her longer as she looks adorable. With the short cut they are too much like a poodle cut and beats the purpose of having a Cavoodle I personally think.
Can you please voice clearly the number of the blade your using at each stage as it's not clearly visible when you just show the blade itself. Love Mr Jacks he's a lot like my cavapoo. xx

I alway appreciate those of you who volunteer your extremely valuable time making a video in an effort to educate us. Thank you :3. I’ve only discovered your video today and notice you focus only on puppies, do you have any tips for grooming the aging dog? We’ve three little ones that are now 11-12 years old, (dad and son being special needs) and despite being professionally groomed their entire lives, in the same shop and with the same groomer, they are now starting to become more anxiety ridden on grooming day, and as their momma, it’s tearing me up. I do own grooming equipment and we are tossing around doing them at home ourselves, but I’ve had 17 major back surgeries for scoliosis making everything physical, more of a challenge, as I myself age, along with the babies......so any tips that pop to mind would be helpful and very appreciated, as we ponder our choices. God bless you, your gifts and talents, and that sweet face with the beautiful smile!
Thank you for your lovely comment. I completely understand how you feel about your older babies. They start to have a difficult time standing for that long and in general become more sensitive to pulling and tugging or handling.
Unfortunately, time is the groomer’s enemy, and that is what your babies require.
If you happen to be extraordinarily wealthy, then you can split the groom up into a couple of days and pay to ensure the groomer goes along incredibly gently and only has your babies standing for as long as they can offer.
But if, like most of us, you can’t do that, then a good solution is to do what you can at home, and ask your groomer to do what they can in one shorter session.
If you tell your groomer what you’re experiencing and that you’re concerned your older dogs are beginning to suffer you might be surprised that she (or he) is surprised. Dogs tend to be brave little soldiers and your groomer may not have noticed and is likely expert and helping elderly dogs cope with a groom.
I have a bad back myself, and grooming when you have a sore back can be an extreme challenge. Some tasks are athletic not matter what fancy equipment you get. Like shampooing. That is one you want to leave to the groomer (or your partner, if he’s up to the task). It’s too hard on the back.
Sitting upright or minding your posture while clipping or scissoring on an elevated surface is not so bad. But you would absolutely have to invest in a table with a hydraulic lift. If you can’t adjust the height of the table easily, you’ll be crying with pain and stiffness. Trust me!!
You can always split up the job with the groomer. Bath and blow out at the salon and then the next day, after your guys have a rest, they can have as much of a haircut at home as they can tolerate.
Ask your groomer for tips, as well. Guaranteed she has all kinds of amazing ideas and just hasn’t noticed your babies in distress. It’s likely very subtle and not much different than normal dog gentle complaining. Shifting feet, attempts to sit, pawing and licking. I bet it’s so early in this for them she hasn’t realized. And I bet she would be thankful to hear about it so she can ensure they’re comfortable. She may have special tables, tools and protocols for her elderly gentledoggies.

Hi Annette! I love his look! Thanks for all the tips here, I will get those clipper blades when i get my doodle! Jax's curls though make the cut so forgiving! I remember you posting another grooming video awhile back of a a puppy who I think is Ginger? You only posted the body clip but you did such a good job on her face in your Facebook banner. Did you groom her face the same way as Jax? Would love to learn how you did that cause her coat was less curly....The only guide I have is the written one on your site but would love to see more face grooms in video since that's usually where groomers mess up the look and you always manage to make your poos look like puppies still :-)
I do plan on showing a bunch more videos and actually talking through the steps of what I do.
I do adjust each cut depending on if the dog belongs to me, what the pet parent is asking for. And if the dog is mine the cut does depend on bone structure, coat type and what I feel like doing with my little puppy topiary. Haha.
Grooming can be so creative. I think people that love it do so because it’s an art form. It sounds silly but it is really true.
And you’re right that the curl in Jax’s coat is super forgiving. Gingers coat is much more fine. I’ll show a groom of her soon!
I do hand scissor the face. You can do it with just a pair of curved shears but blending shears are very helpful in the case of a more silky texture.
Also doodles have longer muzzles, which can also make that baby face a bit harder to achieve.
I will give my doodle a haircut soon so you can see if you like how I do a longer muzzle to achieve that sweet look.
Sometimes I go for a really round shape sort of like what is often called “Asian fusion” grooming. Have you ever googled that and looked? It’s so cool!
I also focus always on really clearing out and opening up the eyes. Large eyes are a key feature in baby faces of all mammals. Open up the eye area and show off those beautiful limpid pools of love and you go a very long way in helping their face have the most charm.
Next step is definitely making the muzzle look shorter and wider. That’s why people like flat faced dogs so much. It does make them look more like a baby. And we all just instinctively love the heck out of baby things so much. They’re just so wonderful to look at. Can’t fight biology. Haha.
And then the final important aspect is symmetry. Balance really helps the eye look where you want it to look. And you want the eyes drawn to either the pleasing sphere you create on the muzzle or the big, beautiful eyes.
If you google Asian Fusion dog grooming you’ll see that symmetry and the eyes of the dogs are the very first things you notice about the groom.
And I’ll keep posting! I groom a lot so I’ll keep posting my grooms. It’s what I do for fun. Lol. I’m so weird. But honestly it’s just so relaxing and fun when you’re not under pressure for a job or under the constraints and pressure of hoping to please a person. When it’s your dog and you can take all the time you want it is such a lovely experience. And full of cuddles and kisses and baby talk to the dog. Haha

Love the way you have clipped Jax. I am learning to groom my Lhasapoo and am particularly struggling with how to trim his face. That was helpful but if you have any tips for a Lhasapoo face that would be great. He often gets mistaken for a Tibetan Terrier so that might provide a clue to his mix

I had that problem with some pet clippers I bought so I got some Andis Clippers and 3 blades plus a Wahl comb guide kit ..... I'm doing a lot better with my Lhasapoo's trims now

My husband told me to get over it and remember its the personality and match to our family that matters- LOL. Its what you say all the time!!! I know, he (and you) is right! So I am totally keeping an open mind as the black ones are just so beautiful and if there is one that is good for us that is really what matters! Do you have boys or girls?
