Klipsch The Nines vs. The Sevens | Answering to Andrew Robinson

  • When I saw Andrew Robinson's review of Klipsch's The Nines and The Sevens powered speakers and he suggested The Sevens were better? I just had to find out for myself. I respect Andrew Robinson's takes on tech tremendously, and his video questioning whether reviewers got it wrong with The Nines felt personal, even though I knew very well it was not. It was, however, a great opportunity to have some fun while also comparing The Nines vs. The Sevens for myself. Turns out, I don't agree entirely with Andrew Robinson on this, but I sure do appreciate the inspiration for this video, as it's been a real eye-opener. Hopefully it will be for you, too!

Just got a pair of The Nines. They're pretty fantastic. Without any adjustments in the app and in my room I think I hear the "cabinet resonance" they are referring to. To my ears it's more of a congestion in the low mids.
I quickly resolved it and even think I've found the secret sauce for amazing separation and depth.
I actually turned ON the Dynamic Bass EQ, then I set the room config to "corner" which drops the low end 6db. And then did very slight EQ adjustments to taste.
Added lots of frequency separation and depth. Almost like a high pass filter in a way.

I have had The Nines for a few months now. Spectacular detail and clarity for a powered system. I found that leaving the bass and mids flat and boosting the treble by a notch creates a holographic experience that is nothing short of magic. They are paired with Klipsch's new Reference Premiere 12-inch subwoofer. Movie theaters are now nonessential.

I think Andrew is great at articulating his experiences though, and his ears have been honed to a very particular taste I think, he knows exactly what he likes and doesn't at this point. Klipsch aren't neutral to begin with, so I imagine the Nines are a tank more than a sportscar so to speak. Won't be to everyone's tastes.

Great video! Music is certainly subjective and as you both point out the room is a huge factor in how any speakers system sounds. I would be interested in hearing a comparison between the Fives and the Sevens or Nines. I have the Fives with a sub and the ports blocked. I prefer their sound this way but would be interested in a pair of their larger siblings as well. I rarely play them very loud but when I do they do tend to struggle a bit.

I have the Sixes and the Nines. The Nines replaced the Sixes in a music only system. They have a lot more presence than the Sixes in every way. More detail and of course bass. The Sixes found a home as TV speakers for my elderly Mom. They work well her.
I feed the Nines with my Roon library and use a Wiim Pro for streaming. They sound great at any volume level! I'm happy with the 9's even though I initially ordered the 7's. There was a stocking issue and the seller gave them to me for the Sevens price. The walnut is a beautiful finish and saved me a few bucks by sticking to that finish.

I love my Sevens. If I had a bigger room I would have gone with the Nines probably.
I’ve had them since early March. I want to eventually add a subwoofer to compliment them.
From my understanding they have a built in crossover at 80hz.
I also want to add a turntable or possibly a CD player.
Otherwise I primarily stream music via Tidal Hifi from my personal computer via USB or when working I utilize the WiiM Mini for Tidal Connect via my iPhone.
I love the look of these speakers and in my opinion you can’t find a better looking pair of power “bookshelf” speakers.
Alas beauty is in the eye of the beholder. To each their own.
I must say as soon as I got them I knocked my knuckles on them and they felt rather stout.
Even at high volumes the cabinet is rather sound. I find that resonance occurs more thru the bottom of them than it did with the Fives.
I need better speaker stands because I can feel them thru my floor.
I want the Ultimate Support MS80/36s.

Yes, this is going to sound crazy, but I'm doing it anyway. I plan on using the nines for my rear speakers using Mt Yamaha A8A. My reasoning is that sometimes I just want more rear Chanel impact, like when a dragon roars or a big gun fight. All I would have to do is turn up the volume in my remote, then back again without interrupting the movie. Then, most importantly. When listening to music or playing my games, I'm thinking it will go to eleven. Especially mixed in with my other speakers and my 2 subwoofers.
Thanks for your videos, this, and your review on the nines. I'm hopeful that I can use the analog hookups. If not, then these will be zone 2 speakers for my bedroom or outdoor listening.

They will tide me over until I can afford a much better overall system of separate hi-fi components. However, if they do a Mk-2 I would like the volume/sub level/input indicator lights on the front, where we can see them and also, it's really annoying that the internal amp turns itself off after no sound has been playing for a minute or so - the amp should only shut off if I press the power button on the remote. On a separate but related topic, like Andrew has asked, I will also keep repeatedly asking Klipsch to make a powered Heritage line of subwoofers.

If someone uses the 9s for mostly movies....do they not have a center channel... nor any rear speakers? Thanks.

I'm afraid you can't really use a center speaker for these speakers or surrounds

I absolutely LOVED this review!!! (A particular hallelujah!!!!🥳😜) I think it’s a great idea to compare the Sevens and the Nines, and with a little collab action with the congenial Andrew Robinson! I actually found him through you and enjoy his reviews (with Kristi) very much. I think it would be great to do this kind of thing if it is done with a reviewer/creator who is doing it in good fun as this was! Of course, I can’t comment on the qualities of either of these speakers unless I can hear them in person but it was really fun to get both perspectives. I am suffering from analysis paralysis in the upgrade of my dedicated listening only station but still thinking of getting an integrated amp with passive speakers with enough bass that a subwoofer is just not needed (is that even possible??). I have a really good ear, but I am so ignorant of products and terminology I am stuck. Already down a rabbit hole, albeit a fun one. Thanks again for a very fun review!!💕

In my own experience, if your stereo speakers can reproduce down to around 45hz qualitatively, a sub isn't necessary for dedicated music listening, unless you listen to mostly modern electronics with lots of sub bass. But for most music genres, a sub isn't required.

I’m leaning towards the 7s. I initially liked the 9s, but the Andrew Robinson review did scare me away towards the 7s. They’d prob fit better with my 15’x20’ room anyway.
The things I heard Andrew mention that no one else seems to mention at all is….supposedly the 7s handle movie dialogue better than the 9s. I’d love other reviewers to touch on that particular comparison detail.
Cheap audio man also loves the 9s. Lots of people seem to love the 9s.
I’m probably gonna have to just go to some store that has them set up and try sampling them. Even so as said in this video my room will have an effect. Argh decisions.

Excellent observation. Speakers are so subjective. The only real way to know if you'll be happy is to listen to them in your own space.

Hi I loved both the reviews on 9s vs 7s from you and Andrew. I was just about planning to buy the Klipsch RP 8000F, and then i see this very interesting powered speakers. Do you think passive speakers like the 8000F / floor standing speakers would be a better choice than active speakers? The 9s and 7s are lower priced than RP8000F here in India - besides the 9s are neither bookshelf nor conventional floor standers.... Requesting an opinion.

For the size of the "9", Klipsch should have made a tower speaker instead, saving people from having to buy a stand for it. I love deep bass, so for my money I would just buy the "7" + a subwoofer.

Not sure I would go that far, but I do think the Nines should be a 3 way speaker with a dedicated midwoofer.
