The term afro-latina is an American construct. In Latin America generally speaking, we don't separate ourselves from our nationality based on the colour of our skins.
I wish America could use that logic of race also. Literally other places be having yt and blk relationships and they identify by nationality only and acknowledge they mixed up. America only identify as their highest ethnicities, like they pure and just forget the other 40% of ethnicities. I personally just go by that nationality as race logic because I know my family multi ethnic, but I guess ppl don't like being mixed up AMERICANS. When I first came across her that's what bothered me about her. She was born and raised around black people sure her parents weren't born here, but she was. In some ways she acts like she isn't black despite her name. It's like she has a I'm not black mentality, so she doesn't want to be attached with us, but at the same time wants to be recognized as a black Latina... She stresses that Latina stuff but she is a black woman born and raised in America not the Dominican Republic or any other Latin country.
@Jay lit you completely didn't understand what I was saying. However acting black isn't about black people being ratchet as you implied. However black people will tell you themselves we have a way about ourselves that when you see other people it is different, and that is apart of our culture, be it the slang, the way we dress or whatever. Sure other people could do it, but that's not what you tend to find among their culture hence why the term cultural appropriation exist.
However as I stated before you misunderstood what I was actually saying. When I said she acts as though she is not black it isn't how she sounds when she talks, how she dresses and etc, but she draws a distinction between being afro Latina and African American despite being born in America having never living in a Latin country ever. She cares a lot about being considered Latin ... It would be like us going to Africa and being upset that people don't realize we are American and wanting to not be associated with other africans... That's my point. Sure she says she is black , but if you listen to how she words things here or even in her breakfast club interview she does make a distinction as though she is different and she isn't. Her parents are Dominican only by way of which place they were dropped off just like us, but we are all essentially from the same places in africa. So when she is associated with African Americans which she is technically because she was born and raised here she gets offended. That's why she wants to fight against this notion that Latinas are not just woken who look like Jlo.
