Excellent, if basic, information: It suggests that no UHF alignment tests were carried out prior to shipping - but, without a spectrum analyser, it’s impossible to be sure how much of the indicated power out was actually at the fundamental frequency and how much was contained in harmonics; If nothing else though, it does give a caution re 27MHz - because we know the actual output is only measured in microwatts at that frequency - and therefore the tuned/filtered PA output stage is trying to do something it was never designed for, and all that extra off-frequency wattage has to be dissipated somewhere…

A few microwatts on 27 Mhz, the rest of the 4 Watts are on the harmonics.

On below 2 meter and above 70cm my Quansheng with Egzumer Ver 0.22 performs the same...Higher output on Medium then High... For Operation, I did find out a diamond Dual Band Antenna makes a big difference Thank You

There is a video on RUclips where the owner of the UV-K5 did a test on the stock firmware straight out of the box, and got 6 watts High, 4.5Watts Medium and 3 Watts Low. He then flashed the EGZumer firmware and did the test again with very similar results. He then put the stock firmware back on and retested. The figures were awful. H 2.7 Watts, M 2 Watts and L 1.2 Watts. He came to the conclusion that the EGZumer firmware had bricked the power levels on his radio.

I suspect if you were to take a dozen of these Radios, line them up and test for Power o/p you would get twelve different readings.
In reality a Watt or two either way makes little difference anyway, and of course if you're working a local Repeater then no difference whatsoever.
These are great little rigs, but they are what they are...just fun to play with.

Thank you for posting this interesting video. I have a question, please tell me how you managed to Tx on 27Mhz when it's outside the radios frequencies? All I get is DISABLED and I am using the EGZumer firmware. Thank you.

Hi, firstly I've only done this for experimental and demonstration purposes, and as I've mentioned in this and other videos the Quansheng won't really TX any significant power on the 27Mhz band without causing interference on the Airband frequencies. If you need to be able to unlock it for experimental purposes, you need to go into the hidden menu and select 'Unlock All' 10 times for it to work.

Hello Ben, I love your videos! In order to find the spurious emissions if you TX on the CB bands, you can use something like the TinySA with an attenuator (anything between 10w to 40w) in-line. It's not 100% accurate, but for the money it's a fantastic piece of kit. Combine that with a NanoVNA and you have a very complete set of measurement tools for just about everything in amateur radio. I am very surprised how badly the stock firmware has been calibrated on 70cm, quite shocking really. I have two of these handsets (and one more on the way), the "ugly" K5 and the "pretty" K6 (like yours seen here). It's great to experiment with all these third-party firmware versions, I'll have to give Egzumer a go after this. I like what I see, a 5w HT TX'ing at more than 5w is a rare thing indeed. Cheers! 73, Jan M7HNK

Hi Jan, thanks for your comment. I recently purchased a TinySA and a nanoVNA and I've already done one video with the TinySA. Glad you're enjoying the channel 👍 Ben de M7FRS

Its a bit disappointing to see low power being so high. It would be better if they used 6dB steps. So 5W, 1.25W and 0.3W.

There should be a power output in the 100-500mW range instead of 2W, 3W or more. I have chinese shortwave trx that also behaves strangely with respect to output. Thanks Ben for the review!!!

The firmware you flashed the version STOCK 0.26 is not the newest and it's know for a low power output. Try using the latest version for uvk6 V3.00.15.bin or better with the UV5R RT600_v4.00.06_publish.bin . You can compare too firmware_IJV_V2.5.bin with egzumer_v0.20.1.packed.bin for a better comparison ;)

its possible to change the power output for the three levels in the service menu of some other firmwares. i lowered mine to make the tx runtime longer in a decent area and not overdrive anything. i set the lowest setting to less than 1 w.. 2.2w and 4.5w

my radio is only transmitting on miliwats only, , not sure what happened but sometimes it will return back to full power then go back to miliwats . . two of my radios are like this and I'm not sure if it is a software issue.

I've not experienced that happening. You could try changing the firmware. What frequencies are you experiencing that on? How are you measuring the power output? Thanks for watching 👍

@@m7frs272 I use Diamond SX-200 to measure the power output. on VHF it does not even get past through half a watt. I am using the Nunu custom firmware.
the bands available to us in our country are 145mhz, 325mhz and 430mhz
Sometimes when i switch back and forth between UHF and VHF the power would suddenly go back to normal. But recently this trick stopped working for me and my radios are now permanently low power.

A little disappointed on your assessment of 11 meters. Without proper testing you really shouldn’t speculate like that. Because all the cb hates just join in, and continue the ignorance.
Other than that, keep up the other great work on this awesome radio!

    • @wonderingworld119
      @wonderingworld119 10 месяцев назад

Not sure what you think was said, but what we know so far is that in 11 meters the power output in that band in in low milliwatts. But there is 4 watts going to somewhere. Others have shown that these missing watts are throwing up all over the place. And it isn't something you can fix in software unfortunately because the bandpass filters are just not there. The good news is that the chip can do it, so it is just a matter of time before they start making radios with this chip in it specifically for 11m. I think they are cheap enough that most of us would happily buy one for each band if it meant we were going to get the full 5w on the frequency we wanted to use.
