What life in Afghanistan is like in 2023

  • Life in Afghanistan, in 2023, where everything is illegal for women. Women cannot vote, women cannot wear their hair down, women cannot travel outside of the capital without a man. Music is illegal for everyone, women are being banned from mosques, they are banned from parks.
This is reality. This was my experience in Afghanistan in October 2022

There are lots of Afghan people in my university. The boys are a in a constant need of finding a woman, some wants several. The girls, they only study. They probably had to go through so much in their country to come here. They are so focused. I don't even know if they have families. One of them once told me that her family went through stuff that she couldn't even imagine. She tears up everytime someone says Afghanistan. I was so scared to ask what happened to her family. Once a teacher asked her if she was going to go back once she become a doctor. She said "I can't even if I wanted to" and cried. I wish her and all the Afghan women the best.

Exactly. People tend to categorise Taliban as a group of terrorists( which they absolutely are) who have nothing in common with ordinary afghan men. But the sad reality is Taliban always had support from men in their culture. They actually consider women as less human beings with half brains than men. Most of the Afghan men may find some of these Taliban laws extreme but they will never allow women to have freedom and power like the countries they are currently living in as refugees. Rape, murder, honour killings were reported even when they had just landed in western countries. Child marriages with 50-60 years old men are very common in Afghanistan. In Afghanistan first local elders of the community have a say in sorting out social matters, most of the time matter of concern doesn’t reach to higher authorities. And these elder men are the same guys who once fought against Soviet Union to protect Islam. Their main motto was to protect and implement Islamic laws. They always supported Taliban against America so I don’t know how and why people think that Taliban is a different set of thugs who have “captured” a country. They follow Islam and want to implement laws written in Quran. No Muslim country allows women to worship in mosques so they do have something common with the Taliban lol.

It's a good thing to have entertainment, and joy, in the world, too. It's okay to find, and produce, happy things. It's beneficial to provide happy spaces for others; places where people know they can go for a smile, and not fear being lambasted with sadness, and pain. It is not the obligation of every person to fill all roles, for you.
It's also important to stay informed. You shouldn't rely on influencers to inform you. There's plenty of outlets that provide that.
You also don't need to tear others down in order to lift someone else up. It makes you toxic, and it hurts both the person you're trying to lift-up, and those around them. Don't do that.

@@Aksarallahthat is full on misinformation. France is a laïc state, which means all religion are to be practiced (if wanted) in private. In public it is fine to have a hijab as well even though it leads to discriminations (which is why the state wants to be laïc, it is simply to avoid discrimination because of religion). There are exceptions of public places where indeed the law of laicity is strict and prevents anyone from wearing anything in relation to religions (so not only hijabs as kippas, crosses, etc. are included). One of those are public schools, where children are supposed to be able to learn without having religion influences. Again, it is not only muslim religion that is targetted, it is a law about every religion to be discreet and peace to be kept. Even so, that does not mean that in practice it is strictly enforced. In my university (which is supposed to be a very laïc space) I see hijabs every day, some of my classmates wear them and that is fine as long as they are not being pressured by someone to wear this religious sign.
Ps: there are mosquees in France, so she would definitly be able to practice her religion.

I started tutoring a woman from Afghanistan last week and she knows zero English and is also illiterate in her native language bc from what I made out (we communicate through pictures and translated audio) she wasn’t allowed to learn. She’s so fucking smart and it breaks my heart that so many smart individuals won’t get the chance to strengthen their skills all bc of their sex and gender.
Update since people are wondering, the non profit I volunteered for was Elena’s Light based in Connecticut. It’s online so you can tutor from anywhere around the world. The tutees tho are afghan refugees mainly women and children. This organization specifically was started by afghan women for afghan women acculturating to the US…
ALSO I never said afghan women aren’t educated wtf…simply said she wasn’t able to. However with the Taliban kicking women out of education it is about gender inequality. It’s not just a “religious issue”…

They're making girls and women there like it's the 1500s or earlier than that time. No education, no literacy, just maids at home while forcing men to be the sole breadwinners and depriving both of them from freedom.
Sometimes and sometimes because some people exist. The more you protect and cover women, the more that men want to see what's under all that protection. Yes that's why sex education is needed yet most religion driven countries won't put that in the syllabus. "I like my women young" they mean children, they want someone that doesn't know what they're doing to them. No knowledge from society will just mean words of mouth from neighbours to neighbours and imagine if you're restricted from going outside to tell your story

As a Turkish woman, I stand with Afghan women. I wish we could do more...
Edit: Wow I didn't expect such interactions and weird assumptions and debates in the comment section. I'm not a child, I'm a 29-year-old human rights academic and activist myself who worked on refugees in Turkey for 5 years. I stand with Afghan women from a human rights perspective, a humanity perspective, a perspective of women's solidarity; and while I know this wouldn't be their optimal wish and the solution to everything as well, I also support their right to flee the country and seek and receive refuge. I also know and observe that xenophobia in Turkey is increasing massively and there are huge tensions between the local population and refugees and migrants in Turkey. Refugees' and migrants' rights are abhorrently violated on a daily basis in Turkey. The local population however is also suffering from a terrible economy and government, which also also had no mid- or long-term integration plan for the refugees and migrants. Most of the host population is simply overall miserable with how the country is going, in addition to being unhappy about how the process of offering temporary refuge to people has been managed, but the population's response in the form of high levels of racism and xenophobia is - of course - neither right or fair, nor helpful towards a better way of doing things. Any actor to blame for problems is the government (and also Western governments for also being xenophobic and not sharing the responsibility of welcoming refugees in a fair way, in fact doing everything to deflect refugees and migrants and pay other states to take care of """the problem"""). The TR government on the other hand did not have a plan for settlement, language learning, education, training, cultural and legal integration for refugees and migrants, so there are many cultural clashes between the communities now. The migrant communities are mostly also just trying to survive and protect each other. Crime and especially crime by men (both Turkish and not) against women has been on the rise in all of Turkey, again thanks to a very sexist government. This is outrageous and we must fight for the equality of women in every shape and form we can. The responsibility for all of this lies with the dysfunctional government, incompetent law enforcement, corrupt and sexist judiciary.
    Thanks for reading.

Stop spreading misinformation, those women have more rights than western women who think they are liberated while they are enslaved to dictates of society. They are dressing less and less to the point they are naked. They are used to sell almost anything. Covering up is most noble, music is from satan, education that brainwashes women to become feminists. Educate yourself, feminism is destroying women not liberating. Muslim women were liberated 1400 years ago when Europens were still debating if women are humans. Don't get brainwashed by these women who have no deep understanding of regulations that actually protect women. Taking pictures of political structures is banned in many countries. People of Afghanistan are suffering BECAUSE AMERICA HAS BOMBED THEM TO DUST. SPEAK THE TRURH STOP LYING. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them. But if they obey you [once more], seek no means against them. Indeed, Allah is ever Exalted and Grand."

I've never heard any of my moms old Muslim friends say they'd be tracked down and killed if they leave or return. I mean it's honestly quite easy to find in Muslim based churches all around the world. I've also seen them fly back, but they don't like to visit often because of the vast culture difference, and of course the cost. This is all hearsay though. Our families no longer speak to one another for various reasons.

I did a couple of tours over in Helmand Province (03 and 10), it was great to see the changes made between those years. To see the people living in a much less oppressive environment, especially the women and children. I’m heartbroken and furious, all the hard work for two decades, gone in ten days time. So many lives lost for nothing now. I pray for the Afghan people, and hope that one day the Taliban government will cease to exist and the Afghan people will no longer be oppressed but be independent and free to live their lives as they wish.❤ 🙏

I was in Afghanistan from Jan 2011 to Feb 2012. Watching bongo trucks drive by, 100+ feet away, loaded with rugs, and a couple kids on top, blasting music was one of my favorite things to see.
It's been so long since I was there, but I will never forget the spirit of the people. The kindness and compassion towards complete strangers was truly something to behold.

These are not Muslims. Anyone who treats a woman badly or forces her to do something she does not want is not a Muslim. Islam is a religion of peace and love, and whoever does bad things to women or is racist towards women is not a Muslim. The Taliban movement is an atheist movement and Islam is innocent of it, and God will hold them accountable for their insults to His religion.

The same people you guys call evil colonizers and yet you're own people make our history of colonization seem like we were going there for vacation. You have no idea how privileged you are we take it away from you. And the reason why Europeans deserve privilege is because we created these countries that allow you to post such videos. If the Muslim word had invented the internet and all modern technology you wouldn't have free speech even online let alone in person. Thank your local European
