Your conundrum is the same as mine then. I test drove a 23 WRX last year and I could not stand the 12 inch display... it's dull, slow to respond, and basically the main thing holding me back on a WRX GT. I test drove a Golf R (got lucky) and it was far superior in resolution and responsiveness, actually looked very premium. The capacitive touch buttons in VW though... made me want to wait until they fix that (which they are slowly doing in 2025 in their lineup). How do you like the Mazda 3 infotainment?? 21k miles 9 months ago you've had a lot of time to experience it. Would you still recommend a Mazda 3 to someone wanting a sport compact, ideally AWD?
I actually cancelled my WRX order for the mazda 3 GT turbo. Cheaper car, top notch interior, no huge distracting display, wireless android auto, heads up display with sign recognition, red leather seating, tighter steering, i actually got the aluminum petals, sill plates, all season mats, mud flaps for free, and mazda reliability on a 7 year unlimited km warranty. Only had it for 4 months, up to 16k km and its been a blast with the turbo swooshes and definitely one of the nicest cars ive ever owned for a daily driver. Glad i took it for a test drive and cancelled my WRX order. Just a much better set up for me, WRX looks the part but at least with this i can drive without having to always have someone wanting to race. Only ever had that happen twice. Once a si and once a forte GT both were left confused once we lined back up. Dont have to race mustangs just needs to be fun lol. P.S. the touchscreen is only in android auto. I never use it anyways to avoid fingerprints, I prefer the dial, lots of quick actions with the dial by just pushing it up, down, left, or right to get where you're going and then zero in with rotating. It becomes second nature and it's very comfortable and not as distracting due to the screen placement. Touchscreen is just unnecessary in this car but people wanted it so they added it. Just an FYI, the bigger 10.25 inch infotainment screen is a touch screen while its in apple car play or android auto and you can enable the touch screen while driving as well with a simple setting. Have to agree with Joe, the rear suspension is not the best but still it’s a fun car to drive.
What's funny though is manufacturers like Dodge do this and people complain because the interior is just a sea of black and they wish it was lighter in color. But I love black interiors.

I got the 24' Premium Plus Turbo HB. It was tough to pick between it and the WRX GT. Test drove both before making my pick. The 3 has a luxury feel inside plus the camera's and hud were a plus. I prefer a MT but with a family had to go with AT. I liked the way the hatch looked more than the wrx plus the price was cheaper. I don't see a lot of Mazda 3 hatch's on the road, not as much as I see the WRX so it's nice have something different.
Both have pluses and minuses. I personally dont care for the styling of the 3 hatch. Initially I though it looked really great, but have come to not like the poor rear visibility and closed in feel of the back seat. I dont like all the cladding of the WRX either, and would prefer a hatchback like the standard Impreza. All Subaru would have to do really is to make the 2.5L standard in the Impreza, and make an optional engine for the RS with a mildly tuned turbo of slightly over 200HP.
You had me in splits with the can throw 😂. On a serious note, your enthusiasm and energy is what makes reviews interesting along with the vehicle itself.
Great car , beautiful body lines especially in white, plenty of power when you need it. I must say I do regret letting go of the 2021 3 Hatch AWD Turbo, I had a white 2019 w/o the Turbo but in 2021 swapped it for a Polymetal Grey Turbo. A lot of us , including myself get bored and think theirs always something better out there. In the case of the Mazda 3 , for me personally or anyone looking for a reliable and fun daily driver with a beautiful interior and exterior, the Mazda 3 Turbo is top notch. I miss the car enough that I may just have to grab a 2024. It’s a beauty in both the Hatch & the Sedan. Appreciate the video , RR does it again showing these sweet Mazda’s.

Great review Joe. I have to agree, if I got one of these the first thing I would tell my dealership is that I want a dedicated summer tire on this when I pick it up. They would surely be able to sell the OEM all seasons to another customer. Reliability is great and the automatic transmission has been beefed up and strengthened to accommodate the turbo. Interior is class leading as well.
I have a bunch of Saabs and the struts for the hood last forever because people don't open the hood that often like a rear deck lid or hatch. Prop rods seem so cheap. I hate them.
I think a lot will depend on what you want or need from a car, either one will do the job but if you are looking for a small daily sedan with an nice upscale interior and for maybe trips on a weekend then the Mazda 3 fits in better. If you don't care about a nice interior and maybe want more of a (play around car) then the WRX GT is probably going to make you happier. I would probably get the Mazda 3 Turbo.
I bought a 2024 3 last month. I went with the FWD 2.5 NA, Preferred in machine gray. Under $30K. I’m happy with it! I just wish they had better trim value like they did a few years ago. You get less in the lower trims now but the Preferred is still fine. I just didn’t want to spend ~$40K for the Turbo AWD with all bells and whistles. Very tough decision, pros and cons, but too many zonks against that top trim level. You helped over the years with my decision Joe! Thanks!
@@marvinmurakami8828absolutely I like the power of the turbo and awd but I’m the type that keeps there vehicles 300k plus miles. Can a turbo last that long maybe if you don’t drive it hard but NA all day
My biggest issue with the vehicle is the small fuel tank and MPG. I get that the MPGs are going to be lower with all the low end turbo power, but they shrunk the fuel tank to fit the AWD. I average 330-400 miles per week in my 2012 Mazda 3, with 238,000 miles I'm still getting anywhere from 380-420 per tank of 87 octane. I can't imagine having to fill up 2-3 times a week with the turbo AWD trim.... and in Chicago waiting in line at the Costco to save a significant amount per gallon...
There is a huge difference in fuel economy between this car and the WRX. Also, the Mazda will take premium or regular unleaded, though the hp is reduced on 87. Meanwhile the WRX is premium gas only. For a daily driver you’re going to put a lot of miles on, make sure you factor in how much more you’ll spend on gas in the Subie.

Tortoise caught up to the rabbit but then was blown into the weeds by the rabbit..😜 Joe always points out the pluses and minuses to consider in the cars. Thank you Joe!!
What I don’t get on this 2024 is why Mazda messed with the way the HVAC buttons are located on the dash. Created empty buttons on the lower stack under the chrome trim & moved the power button to the far right. Also from where you sit as the driver it’s hard to see the orange light showing it’s on. Good job Mazda moving stuff around for no reason
No way is this better than the Subaru WRX and it doesn't come with the 6 speed manual. It is a beautiful vehicle though and Mazda has definitely stepped up their game.
Joe, I prefer the chrome grill. Too much black is too much; the chrome grill and the chrome window moldings look great. This Mazda 3 is a very beautiful and elegant car. Therefore, its need that chrome to maintain the cars's original elegance and classy look. The amount of black pieces used on the car is enough. Quite frankly, I do not like the rear spoiler in black; Mazda should have kept the rear lip spoiler body color. Great video review, Joe. I love MAZDA, and this Mazda 3, in both sedan and hatchback models are absolutely beautiful.
Great car but almost NO dealers have more than 2 per month for the Turbo version. It’s made 100% in Japan and the USA doesn’t order many of the version. And I’m in NYC so if it ain’t here it ain’t anywhere maybe only in California
I snagged one of the last '23 naturally aspirated Premium AWD sedans off the lot. I think that trim is gone for '24, which means you can't get some of the nice extras like the Head Up Display without going for the turbo. Love how it drives, and with a 12.7 gal tank I'll take the extra mileage over the extra power!
@@mj1234321 it does especially in these Joe Biden times in America where we are a sissy country and Biden followers love EPA standards in cars! Little do these degenerates realize a large SUV with a 4 banger and 2 turbos will never last past 110k miles unless driven like a Chinese person!
Awesome vehicle If I ever got one I’d go carbon edition. Naturally aspirated engine with AWD. Turbo engine has great power but less wear on the engine with no turbo
Can someone please tell me why automakers are doing this strange setup now. Volvo XC90 and Mazda cx70 have black Pillar B and black Pillar C but matching beige pillar A to the beige headliner. This Mazda 3 has black pillar B while the rest is all beige.
aww yeah, that's my daily, except in Snowflake White Pearl Mica! The feature list and interior design of new Mazdas feel premium without the depreciation and high maintenance cost of luxury.
Love the chrome, not a lot of it around anymore. Fog lamps are cheesie (WRX), and for the most part useless, but to each their own. Not many true automatics left these days. (most are CVT, not as durable, more maintenance, very different feel driving). Better yet, drop the AWD and you can get a manual transmission.
Agreed zonk for light chrome trim, most manufacturers at this point have done away with fog lamps as another cost cutting measure. While led headlamps are a drastic improvement over old-school halogens they don't make up for no fog lamps. As an added bonus fogs do make a vehicle look much better. We all know prices have increased substantially since Covid, however I'd be more comfortable at $33,000 for this offering. Vegan leather, no rear a/c vents, no rear power ports on a $36,000 compact = unacceptable.
9:53 Personally, that’s a zonk, I wish it is a touch screen so I can use it to do things such as playing some Killswitch Engage, they’re my favorite band!
Mazda must have done a recent software update or re tune on the transmissions. It doesn’t let you redline on the newest ones in manual mode. Discovered that on my buddies
Some Mazda 3 hatchback models come with a black grill instead of the chrome which I think looks better than the chrome. I think Mazda should either offer the black grill standard on all 3 models or as an option since it really makes a big difference in a positive way. I have seen some people on YT buy the black grill surround after market from Mazda parts department and replaced the chrome grill.
While I'd still prefer a manual, at least Mazda still offers a real auto, not one of those damn CVT trans like in every other smaller car nowadays. Overall, I really dig the Mazda 3 Turbo, especially the hatchback AWD, and if I were in the market, this is likely the car I'd buy over any other smaller car. Mazda quality and reliability is second to none, right up there w/Honda. Wish it was more affordable tho as the price, for a compact, is close to top end.
As for the 2024 Ac sucks turbo lag is horrible especially paired with the cvt subaru uses this is the Subaru that pushed me away from them 40k I miss my 2016 3.6 legacy
I absolutely love the Mazda brand (I own a '22 CX-5 in the polymetal grey). But I've always thought the Mazda 3 turbo sedan/hatch was overpriced, especially since they've skewed away from the sport side. If you're just wanting a comfortable sedan with a little bit more power than usual an interesting competitor to this would be the Nissan Altima with the VC turbo. I can get a new one right now in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro discounted to $34k.
Great Sports Sedan. Just FYI in Australia you can get optional Alloy Pedal Set and Seal Plate with extra 450 USD. In addition, unlike the US version, there are 2 rear air vents. Subaru or Civic with CVT? No Thanks!
In todays market, 36K is actually quite reasonable. Personally, I think they should have a touch infotainment system, and I just dont understand why they went to a beam rear axle. If I had 36K to spend though, I would give the Mazda 3 or CX-30 serious considerationi.
One of the better values in the class, for sure. Though for the price, one my be better getting a GR COROLLA. Mazda is seriously underrated. Cant wait for the new sedan.

Hey enjoying your videos. Did you do a review of the new Mazda 6 mid sized sedan?
I love my 23, 3 (exactly the same as your review).....I only wish they had the bigger screen when I bought mine😂
“Nobody’s behind us”
*Immediatly gets passed by a Prius* 😂
Great video as usual.
I wasn’t worried! 😂
That is a very good question!
No way is this better than the Subaru WRX and it doesn't come with the 6 speed manual. It is a beautiful vehicle though and Mazda has definitely stepped up their game.

The 'hood where I come from, that amount of chrome would(barely)be enough.
Love your enthusiasm with these reviews, easy Sub for me
Joe, I prefer the chrome grill.
@@mj1234321 mileage over power? No offense you’re not a real man. Sorry. I’ll take power all day over anything!
@@Nafpaktos-Florida I didn't realize that manhood was directly proportional to 0-60 time.
@@mj1234321 it does especially in these Joe Biden times in America where we are a sissy country and Biden followers love EPA standards in cars! Little do these degenerates realize a large SUV with a 4 banger and 2 turbos will never last past 110k miles unless driven like a Chinese person!
Awesome vehicle
If I ever got one I’d go carbon edition. Naturally aspirated engine with AWD. Turbo engine has great power but less wear on the engine with no turbo
Whe wil a hybrid come for the 3 and cx30? But will they come with cvt?
Can someone please tell me why automakers are doing this strange setup now. Volvo XC90 and Mazda cx70 have black Pillar B and black Pillar C but matching beige pillar A to the beige headliner. This Mazda 3 has black pillar B while the rest is all beige.
aww yeah, that's my daily, except in Snowflake White Pearl Mica!
The feature list and interior design of new Mazdas feel premium without the depreciation and high maintenance cost of luxury.
Very cool! Thanks for sharing that great ownership insight!
Depreciation? Two year old 3 Turbos are $24k all day at this point.
@@jamesrather1510 Without the depreciation of luxury brands, I said. Mazdas lose 40% over five years -- Mercedes is 55%.
Would love to see a comparison between this and the new gli
Agree on the chrome and fog lights
Love the chrome, not a lot of it around anymore. Fog lamps are cheesie (WRX), and for the most part useless, but to each their own. Not many true automatics left these days. (most are CVT, not as durable, more maintenance, very different feel driving). Better yet, drop the AWD and you can get a manual transmission.
That's what convinced me on the Mazda 3 manual transmission.
First brand new car I've bought.
Cool review. The Mazda 3 has the door sill trim as a dealer installed option, well within the price difference to the Subaru.
9:53 Personally, that’s a zonk, I wish it is a touch screen so I can use it to do things such as playing some Killswitch Engage, they’re my favorite band!
11:40 Great pun there Joe! Now & Laters, you can have them now or later! I get it 😂
i had a mazda 3 hatch 2020 and the size and location of the cupholders annoyed me to no end!!
Trying to decide between 2023 Mazda 3 and 2021 Mazda 6. Both carbon edition
Great Review Joe. 👍☺️
Go for Mazda's because Skyactiv-G engine has good reputation and they have more premium interior in the class.
That is so very true!
Mazda must have done a recent software update or re tune on the transmissions. It doesn’t let you redline on the newest ones in manual mode. Discovered that on my buddies
If I may counter. I would tell you to get neither and get a Guilia.
never recommend unreliable junk lol
Some Mazda 3 hatchback models come with a black grill instead of the chrome which I think looks better than the chrome. I think Mazda should either offer the black grill standard on all 3 models or as an option since it really makes a big difference in a positive way. I have seen some people on YT buy the black grill surround after market from Mazda parts department and replaced the chrome grill.
I absolutely love my 2020 Mazda 3 Premium sedan. I just hop theres another generation coming? If anyone knows anything I’d love to hear about it?
While I'd still prefer a manual, at least Mazda still offers a real auto, not one of those damn CVT trans like in every other smaller car nowadays. Overall, I really dig the Mazda 3 Turbo, especially the hatchback AWD, and if I were in the market, this is likely the car I'd buy over any other smaller car. Mazda quality and reliability is second to none, right up there w/Honda. Wish it was more affordable tho as the price, for a compact, is close to top end.
Sharp car. Would like to see a review of the Legacy XT Touring.
You got it! Stay tuned!

@@JaeBTundra1Yes!
I think there's dark chrome trim at the front call Carbon variant.
I drove the turbo model and it accelerated effortlessly.. a lot of low end torque. I agree the 215’s are too narrow.
Thanks for sharing that experience that you had!
I think this is my next car. Checks a lot of boxes for me.
Amazing review Joe.
Great Sports Sedan. Just FYI in Australia you can get optional Alloy Pedal Set and Seal Plate with extra 450 USD. In addition, unlike the US version, there are 2 rear air vents. Subaru or Civic with CVT? No Thanks!
This comes in a manual, but you have to buy the premium trim which cost around $32000.
Good looking car and color!
You have great taste Bryan!
Should be black winged like the cx50 and it should have led fog lights! I also agree that it should have 235/40/19s would look good on the turbo
That would be nice for sure!
I would love to see Raiti go candy shopping. Must be a glorious experience
I got 2021 Mazda 3 2.5 I love everything except no touch screen and they need to add more horsepower . Or just make the engine sound more aggressive .
In todays market, 36K is actually quite reasonable. Personally, I think they should have a touch infotainment system, and I just dont understand why they went to a beam rear axle. If I had 36K to spend though, I would give the Mazda 3 or CX-30 serious considerationi.
I have the 2021 premium hb manual. It cured my ED.
Take the badging off in the rear and you got one hell of a sleeper.
Will be excited if they bring back the Mazda 6!
One of the better values in the class, for sure. Though for the price, one my be better getting a GR COROLLA.
Mazda is seriously underrated. Cant wait for the new sedan.
new sedan?!
Joe and Lori and Steve keep up the good work real true and I love the video real true 👍
Hi Joe Great Review as Usual We have this same Model on Our Showroom Floor. The prop Rod is cheaper on Cost . Rotary Knob is Better & Non Touch Screen last Way Longer & Reliable than Touch Screens across All Brands. We Have Mazda & Subaru right Next door to each other. I ❤ Mazda Design & price & Showroom & Service Department waiting room set up Compared to Any Japanese & Koren & American Brands . I know its not something you cover. A lot of the little Extra Mazda use to do is to save Cost . Giving Customer A more Premium Interior and Ride Experience to its Class & Competition
would of like to see you drive the manual transmission if you can find one
Joe, I'll take the WRX any day over the 3. its better all around 👍 Joe, you changed the profile picture. I'm shocked 😒
I was just doing some updating. Don't worry though because I still have my Subaru!
@@RaitisRidesthanks Joe
13:30 That just makes it look so boring with no aluminum! This is what’s wrong with the Mazda and a lot of cars have some aluminum!
14:53 They literally copied Acura’s homework right there 😂
I have a chance to get my hands on a 2023 Mazda 3 Carbon AWD hatch w/ 21k miles for a decent price through my work’s dealership family. Should I trade in my 2022 Hyundai Sonata SEL w/ 16-17k miles? I have positive equity and want something more fun to drive that’ll be more reliable in the long run.
Almost 6 years with the same design other than the different front grill. It think it’s time for Mazda to change it up. Cx5 also looks exactly the same. I’m not saying it’s a bad design but cmon Mazda surprise us!
