I was gifted an e bike a few days ago, I’ve had so much fun fitting new brakes, cleaning, polishing, altering seat/ handlebars, removing mudguards etc etc... I’m really enjoying these kind of bike videos! Liked and subbed 👍
Me too - I could only get the bottom of the range. Now I am always looking out for the old top of the range (would love a Kilauea or Hei Hei) but they are difficult to come by...

Fantastic work with the homemade decal... i find decal fitting so stressful 🤥totally agree with you ... the 94 /95 decals are the best. I'm guilty of fitting them to all my Konas regardless of the year 🤫
Love it. Yes, I would fit them to all Konas too - but they look a bit strange if the frame is too modern. Although I think Kona went back to the old logo at some stage not so long ago?!
It looks great but your order of operation seemed more difficult than you needed it to be. I don’t think you needed to do anything before the sandblasting (maybe the stickers, but wouldn’t they get removed anyway?), then I would have done the scratch filling, primer over everything for better adhesion, then laid down the white, masked it off, laid down the black, masked that off, then everything silver, unmask, then clear. I’m just armchair painting mind you lol, but I feel like you could save yourself some time and effort based on what I’ve seen other bike painters do. I could be totally wrong though, like I said, not much practical experience outside of a shop class decades ago. The end result though is excellent, I don’t see many others taking the time to do the filling, but it makes it look new again!
Thank you Sean. You are right of course. I was actually thinking about sanding the frame by hand at first. Then the effort became too much and then decided to sand blast. Otherwise would have done the sand blast from the beginning. Next time I will just get the paid taken off straight away. Thank you for your comments! :-)
Did you use 4K clear? I’ve done a few bikes and always use a 4K clear to get a factory tough finish. My wife had that bike but it was stolen from our house along with a couple more bikes😔 That was her first good quality bike and she loved it. Years ago I replaced with a Soul Cycles hand made in USA bike. It’s a bit small for her tho.
Hi, you shouldn’t use sandblasting on aluminum frame, glass or walnut would be better and gentler on the frame surface. Also sand can introduce micro fractures into frame.
You are so right. I want to try walnut next time. This was really my first experiment in removing the paint from a frame. I was going to sand by hand - but took much too long! Thank you for the advice!
To be honest I wouldn't have if the frame was in better condition. But because it had a few dents, I wanted to try to repair them. Thanks for watching!
Amazing job! So much effort! 👏
Thank you.
Я счастлив,что являюсь владельцем KONA LANAI!!!✌️💯👍
Love my '98 3-25 Ti Hei Hei. Great video and resto!
Thanks! 👍
enjoy your beautiful ride !!
Thank you!

Thank you - totally agree. I wish I did not have to work and I would do this full time!
😊😊k
Love it. Awesome job.
OMG - thank you so much. Totally inspired by watching your videos over lockdown in the last couple of years. Love those old Konas!
The work you did is awesome. Lovely old bikes
They are! Thank you so much.
Great build . Love the 90’s Kona’s
Thank you. I really need to get on with another. Difficult finding the old Konas in New Zealand though. Always on the look out...
Really inspiring Martin, thanks for sharing.
Thanks Nick. Sorry for the slow reply. Been travelling.
I wonder what value has at this moment, after so much dedication… Well done! I wish I could do it myself!
If I can do it - I am sure you can! Take a lot of time though...
Amazing painting job !!! Congrats
Thank you so much 😀
I remember wishing I could afford a Kona back in the day.

The orange pedals with the grey of the bike ant the detail are awesome.I would have sell an arm to get a bike like this in the 90's if you could .
Absolutely - this is what drove me to building it really. I could only afford a basic Lava Dome in 1995 (that I still have), but wanted a Hei Hei !!
good job with that paint
Thank you!
nice job on the paint
Thank you!
You weren’t joking, that paint job looked great
Thank you.
Nice work!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Very good standard. Well done xxx
Thanks!
Fair play; that's a hella nice build. I like the colours you went for, particularly the red headset 👌🏻
Thank you - I am thinking of having a rebuild now - so watch this space...
Great job 👍
Thanks 👍
So nice well done...
Thanks for watching
Nice job!

Sounds interesting - I will give it a go. Thank you.
How many Kona bikes have you?? Bravo pour ce remarquable travail !!
Only 4 ! :-)

Stunning. What paint do you use? That golden one in the background is stunning, what color is that?
I actually used a auto-paint spray-can, but will be looking into other options for the next one.
Did the original order of decals ever arrive? xxx
Yes - got them in the end.
Great job looks mint / how many hours total did you keep track.
Good question. It took a lot of time. Probably about 30 hours in total I think. Sorry about the slow reply.
Huh, I didn’t know there was a stormtrooper for sandblasting.
Yes - a great guy!
excellent paint job ,beautiful bike !, what did you use for the repairs on the frame ?
Thank you. It was automotive scratch filler. Do you want the brand etc?
I have no thought to the decals really. I assumed they stayed on the bike not form a template for the word xxx
Decals took too long to arrive!
looks good. next time try baking soda and coffee grounds instead of sand.
Absolutely agree - the finish was not as good as it should have been. Thanks for the advice.
Why did you got those decals?
This bike is a dream... but i'd cheat the "retro coherence" with that steam and i'd mount a shorter one
Yes - I have thought about done a retro-mod and just using the old frame and upgrading almost everything else. Another project I think coming on...
detailed😊 restorer
Thank you!
Joe Murray
Beautiful build. What handlebars are those?
Thank you. Good question. They were actually the ones on the bike originally. They are Funn bars from around 1996 I assume.
😃
:-)
Front brake on the right!???
? Front brake lever is always on the right of the handlebars? Is that what you mean? :-)
@@martinpetts585 I mean, the rear brake goes right!
yeah i’m also used to front brake left, rear brake right.
I'm assuming he's from the UK. Here in the UK the convention is front brake on the right.
assembli tutto senza una goccia di grasso?????
I grease everything that needs it. I probably edited those bits out.... :-)
Status: over-restored.
You shouldnt have removed the original paint.

Neck pain for you.
Old school! :-)
Cryptic?!
