    It looks great but your order of operation seemed more difficult than you needed it to be. I don’t think you needed to do anything before the sandblasting (maybe the stickers, but wouldn’t they get removed anyway?), then I would have done the scratch filling, primer over everything for better adhesion, then laid down the white, masked it off, laid down the black, masked that off, then everything silver, unmask, then clear. I’m just armchair painting mind you lol, but I feel like you could save yourself some time and effort based on what I’ve seen other bike painters do. I could be totally wrong though, like I said, not much practical experience outside of a shop class decades ago. The end result though is excellent, I don’t see many others taking the time to do the filling, but it makes it look new again!

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585 2 месяца назад

      Thank you Sean. You are right of course. I was actually thinking about sanding the frame by hand at first. Then the effort became too much and then decided to sand blast. Otherwise would have done the sand blast from the beginning. Next time I will just get the paid taken off straight away. Thank you for your comments! :-)

It would be great to hear more about the car in your ownership;; what work was done, any issues, any interesting stories etc. The coil overs were taken off for sale to me, but sold with the car. So I have front and rear coil overs sitting in my garage off the car. I may put them back at some point, but happy with the standard ones for now. When did you own? Were the wheels white in your ownership? My email is Martin.petts@me.com if you want to make contact. Are you in Wellington (I think that is where the car was most of its life?) Owned my 968 sport for 20yrs & 2mths (2003-2023). Swiss Army knife of Porkers/sports cars with built in bomb proof solidity. Unfortunately servicing standards by many uk "specialists" are extremely lacklustre! Just had one specialist say to me that "you're abit anal aren't you" when they had just damaged my passenger side door trim & lost the plastic screwcovers. Did discuss the issue with them but they were "busy" on other more expensive cars. I feel that unless it says 996/997/991/992/GT4/GT3 on the rear these "specialists" just dont give the same care to a circa £25k porker as a £125k one. Charge the same hrly/rate though. My advice is work on it yourself as much as possible (its all pretty easy to service brakes, power steering etc) as its oldschool/analoge, just youtube repair videos etc & only let "any" third-party touch it when absolutely necessary (job too complex to fix at home). Also many parts NLA (especially side + tailgate glass), so ensure they dont get "accidentally damaged" if the car is in for work. Mine also needs belts, rollers, tensioners + cam chain/guide since not changed since 2009. Also water pump is original 1995 one fitted in Stuttgart. Its not the only 968 still on its original pump, I've heard of quite afew others. Basically, my view is, let sleeping dogs lie - the more you seem let let "specialists" touch these 968's, the more issues you get - strange in todays cost of living crisis. Great/under appreciated/misunderstood sports car, 'cos the engine is in the wrong place and the wrong type. Drive it for your own reasons, plenty enough people do. I've track day'd it abit, toured europe in it, carried 4 people & furniture + garden waste bags in it (but not all at the same time!). No problem. Enjoy.

    • @martinpetts585
      @martinpetts585 10 месяцев назад

      Hi Darrell - sorry for the slow reply. Been away on business. Great comments and advice, thank you. I totally agree, but I think it all comes down to finding the right 'specialist'. I am also doing as much work as I can myself, but as you say, this just comes down to how complex the job is. I have actually found that once you 'RUclips' what you need to do and then give it a go, it usually turns out to be easier than expected. Time is also another issue when there is a full-time career to get in the way! No third-party cares about your car like you do. I am sure I have had new small door dings / scratches, things that I was sure were not like that before I handed the car over to a garage. If your specialist does not take care of your car like you do, or at least make is look like they take care of it, I never go back! Mine definitely has more work that needs doing - mystery whine at the back now. Pinion bearing?!!! Thanks again for your comments, Martin

Really difficult to get accurate information about the balance belt. But I thought it more important to get the cam belt and the variocam chain changed. Maybe I should have done the balance shaft belt too. What have you read / found about this? For the variocam timing chain I read that should seriously consider it around 130k km...?

    Did they replace the water pump while they were changing the timing belt?

      Sorry for the slow reply. Yes - everything was changed at the same time. They said that the radiator was old and they all have problems where the plastic meets the metal. Fingers crossed it will be fine now.

      968's are known for having leaking water pumps after being changed.......! :- / Hence why I mentioned in a previous post, mine is the one fitted in 1995 (still no issues after 28.5yrs). The steering wheel "scrape/noise" is also on mine, I believe its the boss/hub for the 3 spoke sports wheel isn't quite the same fit as the standard airbag type - as its not really a Porsche wheel, (aftermarket Momo, badged as Porsche). The wheel was supplied to various other manufacturers too (incl TVR I think)? The noise has driven me mad on&off for the last 20yrs too! Normally it scrapes when on full lock (not the rack or steering pump). Usually the variocam pads wear (plastic), allowing excess movement (rattle) of the chain across the cam sprockets, causing wear here too. Sprockets are part of cams, so too much wear & you need x2 new cams @$!!!!. My OEM PA1000 alarm seems to be draining my battery at the moment, but had it on charge so going out for a quick run too! Nice video at the track, keep 'em coming. Also try 968uk, specialist website/forum for owners - haven't been on it for a while but think its still "live"? And also 968 page(s) on Facebook, which are quite useful.

    I have a similar sound from my steering rack (probably)

      Yes - my steering rack is groaning - but I had a 968 20 years ago and it did that too. So I am not worried about that unless I should be? Also the steering wheel is scraping (this is the horn actuator scraping against the circular contact on the underside of the steering wheel). Have you heard of this problem too?
