Thank you, hopefully you can get that figured out. I’ve heard broken or bent shift fork can cause that so hopefully that’s the case because that’s a pretty simple fix once you get the case split.
I don't need no stinking manual!!! hahahaha I do like that the Can Am trans case does split down the middle (exposing ALL bearings) unlike the RZR 1000 trans which is an off center split. Like others have suggested, replacing those chinese bearings (I presume) with the Japanese version would have been a good move. I wonder why the teeth on that final gear slipped?? If this really is a common issue, I would consider treating that final gear with something like CryoHeat or similar hardening process. I'd rather spin the axle than have to go through that again.... Good job!! I bet that is nearly a $2k job to have a dealer make those repairs....it pays to be a ble to wrench on your own stuff.
This is a fairly common problem. What happens is the Oring on the axles fail letting water and mud inside the trans gear. The axles being a lesser metal than the gear starts to wear and eventually wears to a point where a good hit will spin the axle inside the gear rounding both teeth on the axle and gear itself. Some routine maintenance of pulling the axles and adding grease every once In awhile will prevent this. Mine has 7500 miles now and has yet to fail.
Great video as usual! Was there any additional noises leading up to this? I have had 2 occurances of a grinding sound on a hard take off, like not being in gear all the way, and getting worried about a drive issue.

I found however, regular maintenance of the rear axles must occur every 500 to 1000 miles. That would include removing both rear axles, clean the splines on the axles and final drive gear, grease and replace. If you don't do this, failure will occur around 2500 miles. I've read a ton on maintenance on these things and never heard or watched anything on this type of failure. If your final drive gear inside the gearbox is good, it's a relatively inexpensive fix depending on what type of axles you buy. I bought 2 axles from east lake axles, and final drive gear from partzilla. $500 repair. Did the work myself..... of course with the help of Jesse and Sherri in this video. Im getting a loud clunking sound at times on the trail. Thought it was my sway bar links but then I found that my drivers side axle has play up and down where it mates with the rear diff/trans. Would this be the same issue?
The play will eventually turn into a stripped gear. New axles every few thousand miles or maintaining the ones you have are key. Remove snd grease then re apply is supposed to be done regularly. Striped final drives typically happen between 4-6000 miles if you don’t maintain them. I got 8500 out of mine

@@justinlucas2269 unfortunately without looking at it myself I can’t tell you anything. Something isn’t lined up. Most likely the half gear on the spline that the shifter hooks to. If that doesn’t go back in exactly how it came out you won’t be able to to shift it.
At 23:11 I see a blue gasket on your bench. Does that go on the smaller case that you removed before splitting the main case? Did you re-use it or replace it?
Yes, the shifter is really easy to get messed up. The shift fork in the gear box can spin and misalign the gearing also. If you mark it all you should be fine

@TheCanAmCrew hey man...that bottom screw driver side that goes from bracket to the transmission, how the hell did you guys get that screw back in, even with pry bar I can't seem to get the angle right
Ya it seems to be pretty common unfortunately. We’re at 8000 miles now and still doing ok. Taken the axles out every once in awhile and clean them. Re grease then slap it back together.
It was a pain to get out, we had to hook a ratchet strap around the cv joint and ratchet to the side of my garage then tap on the cv with a hammer. It’ll pop out if you get enough tension on it. They can be a pain in the ass to get out if they’ve been in there for awhile.
@@TheCanAmCrew Thanks! Yeah, been in there it's whole life! Hoping if it is the splines my extended warranty will cover? Thanks for replying, and thanks for all the videos! Good job Man!
If the same thing happened to yours there is a change warranty will cover it however if your running tires other than stock they might reject it depending on how well you know your dealer. I paid out of pocket so we didn’t have to wait and go through the warranty process. My dealer told me it would be over a month process.
Ya, they just slide together. There is a shaft that comes out of the trans and slips into the driveshaft. Pretty simple design. A collar actuated on the trans locks the 4 wheel drive.
It had just turned 4000 miles when this happened, we ride them fairly hard but not to the point of not being able to dive it back out of the woods hahaha. We’re at 165hp to the crank. 150 to the wheels. We ride West Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan. Mud, climbs, rocks. Etc.
Heck ya that’s awesome. I have 6000 miles on mine and have only replaced the front a arm bushings last weekend and secondary rollers at the same time. It’s all about the maintenance. Pull the axles every once in a while and grease them and you won’t have any issues.

Ya. We just did one a few months back.
@@TheCanAmCrewwhen I put it back in with the gear selector cover I can’t shift, but with it off I can shift fine. Any ideas?
@@justinlucas2269 unfortunately without looking at it myself I can’t tell you anything. Something isn’t lined up. Most likely the half gear on the spline that the shifter hooks to. If that doesn’t go back in exactly how it came out you won’t be able to to shift it.
At 23:11 I see a blue gasket on your bench. Does that go on the smaller case that you removed before splitting the main case? Did you re-use it or replace it?
I reused that gasket for the side cover
@@TheCanAmCrew thank you
the same thing happened to mine.ordered the parts ,did you have to have the shifter lined up when you put it back together
Yes, the shifter is really easy to get messed up. The shift fork in the gear box can spin and misalign the gearing also. If you mark it all you should be fine
is there anything not on back order?! Thanks for the heads up, high maintenance machines
This past year has been terrible for ordering anything haha. We received the gear early than expected so all in all not to bad on this one. We just ordered a 10 new tires and they are a couple weeks out. 🤞🏻
@@TheCanAmCrew just got my x3 a week ago! I have parts all over the country heading this way and on back order. Can't wait for the temps to be above 0, or windshield get here!
How many miles and what hp are you when it finally stripped? I'm at 3k miles and just curious hownlong before I'm doing serious maintenance like this
4000 miles and 164hp. My x3 is at 7000 miles and is still ok. Just the luck of the draw I guess haha.
Should have put ZRP billit shift forks in and replaced the bearing maybe even a RCV output shaft
That would have been a good idea. I actually wasn’t aware that was an option when we did this.
How many hours and miles on the machine when this happen thanks great job by the way
Thank you, I would have to double check the hours but it turned 4000 miles the same day this happened. Mine has 5000 miles and has yet to go so luck or the draw I guess haha. Same maintenance on both machines since new as well.
How hard was it stabbing the gearbox back into the engine?
It wasn’t bad at all. Everything went pretty smooth aside from removing the hubs and axles
I have to replace the oil pan on this same machine u think id be able to get to the oil pan by taking the rear end out ?
I think you could to it by dropping the skid plate.
@@TheCanAmCrew the rear drive shaft that connects to the rear diff is in the way blocks three bolts
Do you have to remove the actuator in the differential or can that stay in there to take it out?
@@cmrepair8720 removing it makes it so much easier to work with and get it out.
Hey man, I have a trans problem on my x3, at first it could go just in r after that just in h, now it wont move at all , do you have anu idea what it could be
My guess would be a bent or broken shift fork. It’s some what common and has those effects your explaining.
Hey man, this video was awesome. I just did mine and getting ready to put her back in..for the transmisson cable to the shaft...did you have to adjust it at all? I took mine off in park but manaul says to put back on in neutral. How did you do yours?
We left ours in neutral. Everything went great. We have a new version of this video. It’s on our channel from last December. 2022. It’s called windrock carnage and final drive gear or something like that.
@TheCanAmCrew hey man...that bottom screw driver side that goes from bracket to the transmission, how the hell did you guys get that screw back in, even with pry bar I can't seem to get the angle right
Good job i guess I'm doing the same job yo mine
Ya it seems to be pretty common unfortunately. We’re at 8000 miles now and still doing ok. Taken the axles out every once in awhile and clean them. Re grease then slap it back together.
What gearbox oil did you use and how much?
I use the can am recommended amount and their fluid. 75/140
Howdy, did your axle come out that easy the first time?
I think I have same issue, 5,900 miles. Axle is being a pain.
@@TheCanAmCrew Thanks for the info!
Have that problem now can fix tanks
How does the engine connect to the front of the tranny? I’m about to do this to mine and I’m not understanding how they connect. Just slide up in or?
Ya, they just slide together. There is a shaft that comes out of the trans and slips into the driveshaft. Pretty simple design. A collar actuated on the trans locks the 4 wheel drive.
How many miles on it when if failed? What hp are you at? How hard do you ride it, what type?
It had just turned 4000 miles when this happened, we ride them fairly hard but not to the point of not being able to dive it back out of the woods hahaha. We’re at 165hp to the crank. 150 to the wheels. We ride West Virginia, Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan. Mud, climbs, rocks. Etc.
@@TheCanAmCrew Thanks, good info. I just bought my used x3 last week with 700 miles on it. Coming from a Wildcat X, what a difference!
Heck ya that’s awesome. I have 6000 miles on mine and have only replaced the front a arm bushings last weekend and secondary rollers at the same time. It’s all about the maintenance. Pull the axles every once in a while and grease them and you won’t have any issues.
What the heck are the torque specs for re assembly. Can't find them anywhere.
They are listed in the service manual. We have the downloaded version right from brp on a tablet.
@TheCanAmCrew dang ok, I looked threw there an found just about everything besides what I needed. I'll look again. Thx
How many miles on the machine when you had to do this?
4000. It’s common between 6
4-6000 miles.
Do you know the torque spec on the case bolts?
@@rossgreiner1505 17ft lbs.
@@TheCanAmCrew thankyou. Love the content!! Love hatfield too
What mantenince to do to about this probem? Whtas is the charget for tha?
You can do it yourself for about 800.00 in parts. Pull the rear axles out once a year or every 1-2,000 miles and grease the splines and re install.
Thanks im new to this my maverick has 1000 miles on it i Just put grease only on the bearings
Torque specs on the case bolts?
I would check the manual for sure but I think they are 17 foot pounds
Any special tool to split the trans case
No, just take the bolts out and be careful to mark the shifter because if it moves you could be in the wrong position when assembling it
@@TheCanAmCrew any leaks where the cases meet?
@@nickelgracing9313 no. I used transmission permatex to seal it and it’s been perfect.
@@TheCanAmCrew this is my next fix on mine. Mine has 7000 miles. Rocky mountain has the final gear for 300.
My 21 RS wont shift in high, wont go past 38mph, ever hear of something causing that?
If it won’t shift into high then most likely you have a bent shift fork. It’s to real common but I’ve heard of it happening a few times.
Recently came across this same issue
Though it was axel and free spun :( I’m so nervous doing this on mine
lol
I dont have a primary so it would be a pain in @ss
If you have any questions along the way just let us know. We also have a more recent video of removing the trans and fixing the final drive gear. I believe it was novemberish 2022. Called windrock carnage report. The hardest part is pulling the trans out lol.
@@TheCanAmCrew haha I feel it brother appreciate it
Hey bro . where can I order it? I have the same problem
I ordered mine straight from my dealer. I believe you can get it from partzilla too.
How long did it take u to do this
About 6 hours
Where is a differential in this gearbox?
It’s basically a spool.
🙂
One would think you would have cleaned it a bit before tearing it down
🤣🤣
