That jumping sound was the first videogame I ever heard in my life! They had a Track & Field machine in my local leisure center (I think they're called rec centers in America?) and I could hear that jumping noise echoing all over the foyer. When I found the machine I was captivated by it, though too young to play. The first game I played was Paperboy in 1986.
Once played this game on one quarter for six hours. Finally just walked away. I was a proud "hands only" player and never used pencils or rulers. 7.97 I remember for 100 meters. After the Konami people put guards up to prevent pencil usage for whom I considered cheaters, I still got 8.04 using my bent pinky fingers. God I'm a loser.
Chalkdust It depends on the settings that the arcade manager wanted to give to the game ... also in my case the game ended after the 6 specialties but elsewhere the game could continue with increasingly difficult qualifications
There was a way on the button cabinets to only alternate 3 times per second (6 total presses), and can get the speed meter just 3 short of full speed. Had the timing down in that department, but did alright in the events themselves.
This is most definitely NOT autofire. This is the recognized MAME world record both at Twin Galaxies and at MARP, and both of them have reviewed the replay for autofire. I have video of Tommi playing hurdles on a cabinet, and Tommi has played live at Funspot in years past and demoed his play button technique in front of top players. I've personally analyzed this the INP file for this replay in detail and he is very very fast, but the individual button presses are not what you would see with autofire. One thing Tommi does do in MAME to get an advantage is use a joystick for High Jump since rolling your fingers on the buttons with an eight finger technique is not as effective on High Jump as quickly moving the joystick back and forth.
It's a shame that we don't know if this was on buttons or joystick because iwth the right joystisk, one that is very springy, and with the right technic (a gentle brushing across the top) then these peformances are possible. i don't like to boast but on the proper ones back in the day my performances on buttons were alot better (except for the hurdles - only got 9.84sec).
i have a local arcade that has a trackball modded machine. i can definately get those speeds on that but that mod doesn't exist for mame. he's probably using fast run cheat. from my experience on mame(different emulators, different buttons, different encoders, different devices) it is difficult to get these speeds unless using "fast run." at least for me, maybe i'm slow.
GOFLuvr The MAME team puts that message there to cover their butts-they’re basically saying they won’t be responsible for users’ “copyright violations”. Their emulator is merely a means to an end.
Who cares if this game bans auto-fire? I think it is great to me for this game and Hyper Sports combined together. I thought this is a great idea for Hyper Sports as the next suggestion.
how is this a world record?? back in 84 I got 4,500,000 points during a 8 hour game. I scored sub 8 seconds on the 100 metres and 2:49 on the high jump, I smashed every 1 of the other records. Also, why don't some of the times/records register? seems a little iffy to me!
the reason the record scores on the game don't always register is the first time MAME opens this game, all scores are 000. if you go through the game operators menu and reset the world records, it sets the records to a predetermined number for each event. if the numbers are at 000, any distance event is higher than the 000 and considered a new record. although with the timed events, the record is 000 and it is impossible to score less than a 000 so the record wasn't beat and doesn't record
This was my top game back in the day. Only played buttons, never saw any other type. Never heard of pencil trick either but I was a drummer and my speed was better then this video. High jump i remember was 3.54. Maybe 55. So 3.50 is not the high jump, record in fact even now I can beat that. Just don't have the speed anymore for running. Old age takes us all down at some point
Hi great vid, I just recently got a custom track n field mame cabinet but the buttons are not much good for playing (happ arcade buttons i think), they are too stiff for mashing properly, what buttons would be best to get fitted for playing these games, and can you change the fitting so they are super sensitive etc, thanks
akaTheWilyFox In Clacton where I was King of this game..it was a joystick! I could go 3 or 4 hours with 10p! I think it was because of me, they changed the game so you couldn't keep on going! I used to get grief from the bouncers in the Arcade for being on the machine all day, so to get around that, I'd qualify, then let one of the kids watching me have the other two go's so it looked like I wasn't always hogging the game lol.:)
Why the deliberate fails at high jump?

you're not a loser, I also love the game
WeaselWheelie 6 hours!!? 😂😂😂 Didn't you have a home to go to? 😂😊
No, you didn't. For 6 hours the qualifying would have gotten incrimentally higher each playthrough. You are a liar.

We use to play with a comb, lol

There's no way someone could tap the buttons this fast. It's on run mode
Loved this in the Arcades..... leaving with sore fingers!!!!
You should've used a comb
@@hawaiisown5064 yup! thats how I played it.
The voices sound like a mix between a walkie talkie and fan
Vangelis - chariots of fire at the end of the game.
Well done. I got the xbox live world record, also got 6.94 at 100 m..unbeatable !
JESUS CHRIST THAT LONG JUMP MADE MY JAW HIT THE FLOOR.
Why? It was weak
Yes, it was amazing!

I nearly died laughing at the message at the very beginning. Has Konami ever been known to enforce copyrights on games over 30 years old?

in javelin throw, the funniest part is the javelin catch a UFO 😅
I got 101 meters in javelin with NO emulator
those guys are on the juice!
100 Meter Dash
Long Jump
Javelin Throw
110 Meter Hurdles
Hammer Throw
High Jump

there are 2 versions rounds off (1 round that ends after high jump) and rounds on go until you fail to qualify
hello 1 round of play here
I got 9 millions points 25 years ago when game did not finish after high jump.
Are you allowed to use a pencil for Mame? Trackball?
It is with Autofire, you can change this in the DIP settings. I can equal these scores and I dont consider myself brilliant at this game.
it is not autofire``I assure you!!
Excellent playing. However it's possible to get 2.52 in the high jump.
I got 2.54 in arcade. Its the maximun i jumped.
why didn't the 100m time register as a record?
Sorry, I've seen friends back in the day get over 101,000
why is the difficulty set to easy?, 16sec for the 100m! a bit suspect this
Why cant we see the speed bar????

I wouldnt mind having a go at the record of this. how do i record my game ?
TJT the finger king!
Why the two fouls in the high jump event?
That's how you get the mole bonus.
MexboroughBuildings THANKS. I needed that in order to top this score. Gimme 2 or 3 months hehe
How does Twin Galaxies verify that auto fire is not being used? Amazing score if legit
You can check by running inpview command on MAME playbacks to check user inputs frequency/speed I believe
pls ROM. link

Didn't the original arcade of this use a joystick?
Nope just three buttons per player.
