@BoxyTheSpaceDog the Arena suit that Cavic had on was slightly faster than the LZR, the Arena suits were completely covered in the polyurethane, the LZR only had polyurethane panels on certain parts of the body that created the most drag, not covering the whole suit. The polyurethane is what eventually made the Arena, Jaked, Blue 70, original LZR suits illegal. So because Cavic's arena suit was pure polyurethane it was slightly faster than phelp's LZR.

The US Olympic Trials only allows top two swimmer per event to go to the Olympics. Mike would've been playing third wheel in 2004 and 2008.
I was there!! And it was just crazy !!!!!!! There was so much noise... During the second 50 m everyone stood up and screamed!!! It was a magical race..
this is only the 3rd best swim in history the first two happenend in beijing with phelps n cavic in the same event n the final of 4x100 freestyle with jason lezak outswim bernard of france. but this is still classic. thanks for sharing
the suits help, and just that, they dont guarantee results, they are not the only variable in the game, it takes also a heart of steel, powerfull muscles and a great technique.
Cavic is a very SHOULDER driven flyer, as Phelps is very LEG driven flyer. These suits gave shoulder driven flyers a very close advantage, but without the suits to rely on, a lot of shoulder driven athletes began to taper off as Cavic has, but he's also undergone surgery, as i take it he's out of the Olympics this year, I'm not sure correct me if i'm wrong about his injury though.

The suits did give an upper hand, but the times can be broken. Look at Lochte's 200IM. Some swimmers relied to much on them, and I beleive Cavic was one of them. He didn't even make top 16 at Shanghai this year. . . you don't just go from being in the top 3 to not even the top 16 just like that.
@tbird09100 you were right: I searched for his results in recent championships and since the suits are not allowed, he has not showned any improvement from his beijing time. in berlin and dubai he scored in the 200 around his one-fortysix of beijing.

Cavic was ahead of Phelps at the Olympics at 90m in a race where the world record for the 100 was set. The same thing happened in Rome. My comment is a bit of a mean way to rub in Phelps' victory.

@asterix645 it wasn't illegal until that jan which was when the law passed.. but it was THAT suit that they were mainly banning and i also think full body suits are out too.. you can only wear leggin's, halvies and speedos now to my understanding. and it wasn't just cavic who wore the Arena X Glide suit... 25 other athletes did... all of whom were NO NAMED swimmers and never touched a personal best in their own careers yet they swam to world records! LOL
you are wrong this race happened in Rome year 2009 a year after Beijing Olympic. Cavic has the operation year 2010 a year after this race. if you don't believe search it.

@moosebackstroker it's been a while that after examining biedermann's times with and without the suit, I realized he is way faster with it, and accepted to correct my position. but on my behalf, i knew SC is faster, that's obvious, but is not that much faster, it's around 3-4 secs (so 1:45 in qualy is not slow). nevertheless, i already accepted the guy is waaay slower without the X-glide. for example in 200m: beijing 1:46.00 wo, rome 1:42.00 w, berlin 1:45.84 wo, Budapest 1:46.06 wo.
@ilicsasa Completely true!Their drug enhancement and manufacturing companies go hand in hand with institute of sport.They openly stated that in documentary called "I have a need a need for speed".In it the say that they will keep inventing new sport enhancers as long as anti-doping agency is step behind to track and find them.Also in same doc was shown tablets used by USAF pilots that caused numerous "friendly fire" incidents,suicides amongst pilots,mistaking civil for military targets,etc...
THIS was the most incredible destruction of an opponent I've ever seen in the sport of swimming! Phelps was last at the 50 mark and out of sheer will, determination, and rage over Cavic's week long taunts and jabs at him, he literally went out there and decimated Cavic lol. This was even more impressive than Phelps' win over Cavic at the 2008 Beijing Olympics the summer before :)

yeah suits make a huge difference. if they were going to get rid of the suits they should have done it sooner. i tied for 1st at southern zone meet in 08 in 100m back when i was 14 i went 100.37. next year only dropped .2 from that time. my time from before i wore the suit was 1:02.56. yeah suits make huge difference
