Indeed, i do highly agree with you. You ( Singaporeans ) are very lucky to be out from Malaysia, otherwise it will end up like my home country Sarawak and also Sabah. The central government had lied to us for the past 51 years and most of our resources had been harvested and export it to the west side of Malaysia and a very high number of poverty in Sarawak and our income is much lower than the Malayan people. Now we realized that we wanted to secede from that country and to be independent right now we are signing for a petition for referendum.

He was discriminated against because he was a chinese in cambridge and also he said...the british thought they were superior ...not that they were..! He knew they were at that thime. But if someone thinks theyre superior to you that means they think youre inferior. And he said'I know I AM not inferior. And he wanted a country for spore that people would look up to us. Thats why sporeans can go anywhere int eh world and hold our heads up high. of course there are the ugly sporean travellers..but far and wide we are respected. Because he paved the way for us.
Well said. Whatever right or wrong decision that he has to take in his early days as PM, he did it for the survival of this country. It is also that he is able to assemble a team of like-minded people to work together for the good of this country. Else we will not be here to enjoy the fruits of their labour.
that guy pretty much single handly transformed singapore from a improverish, crime ridden slums into a first world center of trade and finance during 30+ somethingish years of his tenure.
May I say as a Malaysian Chinese, Singapore is a really heart warming story. Thus most of my childhood i spent in Malaysia I also enjoyed that country. Anyway Malaysian Government has a very complicated structure embodied till this very day and despite how the citizens try to unify and identify this to countries as family, the history haunts us. This goes for anyone who had faced rejection, keep working hard. Keep achieving and don't regret being an outcast. I live in Australia at the moment so uncovering the Malaysian/Singaporean history is like tracing an ugly genealogy. Glad that Singapore is what it is today and some of my friends living there are enjoying their lives because of this news. Lee Kuan Yew was more than a Prime Minister, he truly is an honest and caring individual with a vision.
Its not just him... It was millions of Singaporean people who along with him made the dream true... Man I saw the country in 2017 & I was so amazed to see what they have done... They pull the shit like no other big ass country does... Really a success story of its own magnitude
Abang Malaysia allows Adik Singapura to use 'the English Language' for her 'International Trades' to earn the USD to be kept as SGD under MAS! Lets us all keep his dream alive...❤️
A country with a misguided policy to safeguard only a community and is hell-bent to marginalise other communities that could have contributed to the progress and prosperity of their homeland, it is no wonder it lags far, far behind Singapore of today. Singapore, you deserve all the international accolades for what you have achieved in less than a century. Best wishes from Malaysia!
Turns out this IS a Blessing in disguise. Singapore has turned out the way LKY wanted us to be. A hardworking nation of people built on meritocracy, of different cultures, races and religions living in peace with each other. LKY may have passed on but he had seen what Singapore has become - A AAA FIRST WORLD CLASS CITY. A well known tiny red dot, well- respected by world leaders. I'm sure he died happily. I am so proud of you, and Singaporeans' outpouring of love, respect and tributes to you during the last week of the funeral bore testimony. You've always taught us to work for our achievements. There's no free lunch. Rest In Peace, Minister Mentor LKY. Glad we made you proud.
Singapore was like being disowned by its own parents. Uncertain of their future (because they're small and lacking... well... everything that one will wonder if Singapore can be called as a country) is what Lee Kwan Yew and other Singaporeans feared. But they managed to become one of the most flourishing nations in Asia and well-known in the world. This is something that Singaporeans really deserves respect.
After being kicked out he built one of the richest and most prosperous, the best educated people with the best education system, and a highly advanced county on the planet in the span of 5 decades.
No doubt the Tunku came to the realization that LKY if left in the federation, would become a threat and possibly rule of the whole of the Federation. A situation which could not be allowed given the racial politics of the time (and probably just as much so today). What an exceptional person LKY was. I can't put my finger on anybody in any country of recent times that comes close to him
That is true pain Love you Mr LKY You pained and yet bravely with nothing you took the negative situation and made it an absolute positive. You never let us down Thank you Thank you Thank you
First time watching this video. ..... Never knew mr Lee was so emotional.... Respect to the Man. Perhaps one of the most intelligent politician of the last century!!!!
I'm 18 years old and currently studying in ITE Central College. Singapore did survive and became 1st in the world! Always remember Never Give Up!~ Thank you Mr Lee Kuan Yew.. :)
I think LKY realise the long term effect of separation, eventhough SIngapore was the richest State but it lose out in terms of land and resources. Singaporeans have to work to survive, Hence have to work very hard , too busy surviving to actually live. But people walk slower in Malaysia, more free time to do own things, more tiime in the coffee shops etc. Also we have more time to indulge in our hobbies, Suicide rate is also very low. Future wise, say 50 years or more to the future, how will Singapore cope up with the growing populations.
WOW! Singapore's National 'day is on 9 August 2010 !! Aren't we happy being SINGAPOREANS.! The atmosphere is going to be so pulsating on the ground, and ONLY LOYAL SINGAPOREANS FEEL IT! It's not the celebrations or partying but the mood of being together and showing others that we are one and SINGAPORE CAN COUNT ON US. The best part is overseas Soingaporeans are celebrating too. Wowee!!
I felt really really sorry for Lee Kwan Yew, we did a huge mistake of kicking Singapore out it was fear and racism that separated us. Look at them now one of the strongest super powers in Asia and a nation free of corruption. An embarrassed Malaysian is proud of you Singapore.
Yahoo! Singapore's 45th National Day was a day to remember! and so was our Opening Ceremony for the Youth Olympics Games with 205 countries flying their flags here!! Singaporeans love it and so did all our guests from all these countries. We Wowed them over and over again! This is a big plus for Singapore's reputation n the global world.
Thank you Mr Lee Kuan Yew. Those tears are NOT in vain. Many of my fellow countrymen have been blessed across the Causeway. Waiting for a meet in Heaven.
nope, lee kwan yew was convinced that the only way for s'pore to move forward was merging with malaya, cuz he didnt think S'pore cld make it as a tiny nation. But, mainly due to political differences (S'pore wanted equal rights for all regardless of race or religion, while M'sia wanted to retain privileges for Malays only.), M'sia being the bigger n more powerful counterpart ejected S'pore out of M'sia. It was devastating for S'poreans. The world thought it was doomed, but it came bck stronger.
I disagree with tun but you need to understand the sentiment at that time. The racial demographic substantially changed because of the citizenship and with Malaysian Malaysia ideology promoted by LKY will provoke the native even more. I'm not sure why LKY is crying because he won't shutup about his Malaysian Malaysia. For me tun biggest mistake is not including Singapore during the earliear independence negotiations with the Brits. Otherwise Singapore would be like Melaka and Penang which is few state in Malaya.
LKY is very intelligent. He is the real statesman. If only Tunku understand how significant the merging was, things should have been very different nowadays. Malaysia would definitely have been the most prosperous country in the world with all the natural and human resources LKY would have tried to jointly potentialise to the optimum with Tunku. Alas! Tunku's perception about the merger was very much distorted at that time.
Mentor Lee , thank you for your concern - this turned out to be a blessing for us. Singapore is small and unique and we won't allow rabble-rousers destroy the stability n fabric of Singaporeans. The Washington-based 2010 Gallup Poll conducted a global survey in 148 countries n discovered that Singapore remains No 1 immigration hot spot for the 2nd successive yr. That means our 4.8 mil would increase by 219% if everyone was allowed to move here coz in a global world, people now know us.
I believe MM Lee had his reasons for keeping this merger. I deeply admire his tenacity and resilience to be able to pick himself up within days and foresee a plan (HDB) for Singapore :) I LOVE YOU MM LEE!!!!!! YOU ARE DA BOMB!
"Big" brother has done a favour for and to the "little" brother. Singapore today is synonymous with success, first-world, innovators, inventiveness, trail blazers, pioneers, setting the bar, trouble-shooters, never-say-die, ruggedness, indomitable, incorruptible, efficiency, excellence, visionary and far-sightedness. And 'Yes' they are hard-working too. If there are people who prefer to bury their heads in the sand or live under coconut shells or cannot stomach to run with horses, then these people will continue to delude themselves and live in fools' paradise, with handouts and bailouts. BTW, I am not a Singaporean.
I have a hate/ love relationship with this video, its a wonderful historical lesson but the comments are hateful and breed tension between us, where has our friendly relationship gone to? Out the window? It serves to show how nationalism is absolutely not needed. Patriotism breeds peace, nationalism breeds war.
Singapore is successful not due to pure luck but due to their hard work. the first ejected nation against their own will in the history of modern world will become the most successful and richest country in the next 15 years. Malaysia will continue to regress due to Mahathir's cronyism and lack of meritocracy.
As much as I dislike some of the policies of the current PAP government, it's scenes like these that'd make me sacrifice my life to help him realise his vision. anyone who does not fell the same isn't one who could be counted if the going were to get tough. In 1967, I was 6 years old and I know what Singapore was like then because my mother brought me around from geylang serai, chinatown, serangoon road, bukit timah beauty world. Without a doubt, he did a tremendous job.
The world today sorely misses Lee Kuan Yew so much. He's such a wonderful example of genuine leadership where he is capable of showing emotion without either being paid to do so or without acting. As a Filipino I find it sad that my own people do not look up to this man. Rodrigo Duterte the current President of the Philippines as I have observed, his leadership is somewhat patterned with Mr. Lee's or has some sort of similarity. I have mad respect for Mr. Lee and yes, Singapore is a beautiful and well-managed country because I did live there for at least 4 years when I was a kid. Needless to say, the cleanliness, discipline and kindness of Singapore is unbounded.
even I Malaysians myself it's nice to see such country to succeed more then us and I really surprised of how much they wanted to do this because that's how us wanted merdeka and patient about it
LKY thought August 9, 1965, was going to be a 'moment of anguish' for him and his people (Singaporeans) fast forward about 20~ yrs and until now, it's the Malaysian citizens that look back at August 9, 1965, as their moment of anguish Singapore's GDP PPP is 4x and GDP nominal is 5x of Malaysia
I have high hopes in continuation of prosperity to both Singapore & Malaysia..merger or no merger.. people's nature and reshift in their quality of life and role(regional and global) is a major long lasting positive😀✌️
Soul Yuchen Yep. LKY cried in the meeting reminded me of Hashirama being very emotional during the kage summit where they discuss the future of the villages. Also, Madara (PM of Malaysia) does not want anything to do with Hashimara (LKY) as both have different ideologies, left the village similar to how the pm of Malaysia said he decided to part due to different ideologies. Without Madara (PM of Malaysia), Hashimara (LKY) continue to built up the village (Singapore) into a better place than it was.
The day SGD starts to own RM... Let's look forward to cheaper petrol and hotels across the causeway, thank you Tunku Abdul Rahman for giving LKY the resolve to do better. It's unprecedentedly 2.55 now huh?
Not all "parting" are bad although its hurtful. Glad our "Parting" work out well if not , maybe we Singaporean would be suffering under the Malaysians whos interest is only their own interest. Compare us n them now, we see the vast difference. Not marginal difference but a vast difference. We may not be perfect but we are way ahead of them.
@urchard are u working in malaysia or somewhere else? i'm being fair here as im working in the finance industry i have met quite a number of prominent businessmen. But if you really get your facts right from the inside not the newspapers these are not the actual things happening. All lari due to lousy corrupt government officials.
Why is it that Singapore has a National airline whose iconic stewardesses look like Fann Wong, Gong Li, Joanne Peh, Bettie Page and Dita Von Teese? They are the sort of girls who look as though they stepped out of Belgravia, where you see the prettiest in London. LKY's one of the most perceptive men I have ever come across and you can learn something from him, as he has been a role model of mine since I was 16. Judging from your name, you're a member of the BNP or EDL.
the people of Singapore n Malaysia has always been great.... easy going n full of fun. Governments always spoil things out of selfishness n greed. Would love to congratulate Singapore n Singaporean on a job well done. @BrainstormerXV Exactly. I absolutely agree with you. Singapore transformed into a FIRST WORLD COUNTRY with such credibility that the US, China, India, Arab Emirates look to LKY and our govt for views on the region. They likened us to our ppl's hardwork and discipline. Count our blessings that this turned in Singapore's favour. We were practically 'left to die' but Singaporeans survived with our wit and grit. .. to those green-eyed monsters' comments. We know where you're coming from.
@Porepura I am a Singaporean and I'd tell you that I will be prepared to work anywhere in the world that pays me 8 times what I earn in a single month in Singapore. And if the country is safe and well administered, it'd be a bigger bonus.

To all the haters who say Malaysia is stupid (including Malaysian themselves), let me tell you something, Tunku actually made a very wise decision, if Malaysia does not separate Singapore immediately, the British will come back and "solve" the dispute by backing Singapore militarily, and Malaysia will lose the war within 6 days. Basically, Malaysia will become the second Palestine.
Uh, I believe most people think that the premise of the dispute in the first place is stupid. Tunku & umno had really stupid, backward ideas on governance. Also bumi still a thing in 2018? Stupid as hellllllllllll lol
Eileen Lee Kuan Yew is just a typical greedy and hypocrite chinese man. He doesn't deserve any respect from us because of course, any immigrant will fight for 'fairness'. 😂😂😂
And I heard that Dubai (UAE) tried to model itself on the lines of Singapore. Indeed they have many similarities in terms of glittering skylines. But that's it. Dubai is a castle built on sands. It has no substance. Just a facade. A little wind and it will be blown away. You need much more than the tallest buildings in the world, the only palm shaped islands and the most expensive hotels to become a true Singapore. Try as they might, but the city of sand won't last.
As National Day draws near, let us not forget that Aug 9, 1945, was a day not of celebration, but a day when our country was plunged into the great unknown.

"...there have been differences between the central government and the leaders of the Singapore state government and take so many forums and are so many kinds.." ...one of differences was that the power-crazed Lee Kuan Yew didnt want to be downgraded as chief minister. From 1963-1965 he was still regarding himself as Prime Minister. There is still an old plaque in Geylang Serai market dated in !964 officiating the opening of the market addressing himself as Prime Minister which was not supposed to be.There cant be 2 prime ministers in a country!!..

Old days, the colonist miss-spelled old spelling "Singapore" and nounce it "Singa-pore" like this day :)
LKY is a pragmatist and survived based on pragmatism and interest to Singapore only . PAP party was a marriage of convenience between LKY and the Chinese Communist to fight the British for power and gain popular support from the Chinese masses. LKY was threatened by the communist left wing in his party and had to merge Singapore with Malaya for his political survival but was rejected by Tunku . So he masterminded the idea of bringing Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak in to make the racial demographics acceptable to Tunku . LKY is the founder of Malaysia . Not Tunku . He is the one who secretly proposed the Grand Design to Tunku , because he needs the merger with Malaya to fight against the communist in Singapore. He came to Sabah and Sarawak and urge the leaders to formed Malaysia and also influenced the British to "arm twist " the two states to be the sweetener for Tunku to take Singapore in. After 1963, the formation of Malaysia , he started clashing with Malaya Umno , and got the support of Sabah Sarawak and Penang for his Malaysian Malaysia movement . He championed the movement but later betrayed Sabah and Sarawak with his secret negotiation of separation with Tunku, without any knowledge and consent from Sabah and Sarawak . He admitted it in many interviews and in his book . Many were cheated by LKY and shed blood for his betrayal in 1969 may 13 in Malaya . He cried on separation day in 1965 , not because he feels crashed for his Malaysia dream , but he betrayed all the non Malays with his Malaysian Malaysia movement while in Malaysia. Thanks to LKY, the biggest betrayal he has done for the people of Sarawak and Sabah . All Singaporeans and Malaysians and people interested in LKY must know the TRUE history of Malaysia . The Sarawak and Sabah People were betrayed by LKY and we here are speaking the truth about LKY

u're right.MR LKY had make the world learn to respect singaporean and our success.if nt becoz of MR LKY's vision and his daring action, singapore would nt be what we see nw.and at times,he may do things that nt all singaporean my agree but if he didnt do it,we would nt be doing what we're doing nw.MR LKY is really the giant and father of all singaporean!!!!!!!
i dont think he entered politics to be popular...thats the gist of it all. he wanted a better life..He also said he didnt want to be discriminated against. Because he paved the way for us.
agree with u jessie james

That rejection is a blessing in disguise...just look at how far Singapore has come while her neighbour is actually regressing in many fronts...so much respect to LKY!
Not the first time I have seen this clip but each time I would tear a bit of seeing how hurt he must have been but his soul is now resting in peace he made Singapore and we owe him so much...how do we do justice ...is to help one another esp in times of crisis such as this pandemic...as this year's ndp song says it all...we did it before we can do it again! Lets us all keep his dream alive...❤️
And he had the last laugh 50 years later! RIP LKY...
An incredible leader.
RIP.
I’m proud of my country today 54 years later we became better then what we expected.
MR.LEE KUAN YEW BUILT SINGAPORE ON HIS TEARS,SINGAPOREANS SHOULD NEVER FORGET HIM,HE IS A SUN SHINE TO SINGAPOREANS,GLORY TO GOD,AND GLORY TO HIM.
He definitely had the last laugh!
I can't put my finger on anybody in any country of recent times that comes close to him
That is true pain
Love you Mr LKY
You pained and yet bravely with nothing you took the negative situation and made it an absolute positive. You never let us down
Thank you

A legend. May you rest in peace.
I am watching this video 15 years after it was posted. 3rd March 2023, Friday. 16:04:48 - GMT-3.
I'm 18 years old and currently studying in ITE Central College.
Singapore did survive and became 1st in the world!
Always remember Never Give Up!~
Thank you Mr Lee Kuan Yew.. :)
You must be 25 years old today. Congratulations! 🇸🇬👏👏👏👏
Future wise, say 50 years or more to the future, how will Singapore cope up with the growing populations.
i agree with u, i don plan to get a job in singapore when i graduate. It is because malaysia does provide better "free"dom...
Right.... 1SGD=2.68 MYR. And yet there are Malysians coming to Singapore to work. Oh well, FT :)
Yeah! And shame on you butthurt!
Btw whose we?
Aku sbgai org malaysia. Tidak setuju sama sekali dgn tindakan tunku abdul rahman.......
Kau kena paham LKY nak ap ,sampai Malaysia terpaksa berpisah dgn Singapura.

No matter what people say... Dear LKY is a hero to his people and to me...
Mr Lee, u have my respect
PRETTY MUCH EVERY-FUCKING ONE IN SINGAPORE IS GIVING HIM HIS RESPECT
NO NEED TO TYPE IN COMMENTS
Thanks to your leadership, Singapore survived and thrived.
I believe MM Lee had his reasons for keeping this merger. I deeply admire his tenacity and resilience to be able to pick himself up within days and foresee a plan (HDB) for Singapore :) I LOVE YOU MM LEE!!!!!! YOU ARE DA BOMB!
Happy birthday Singapore

The two nations must learn to coexist as Asean neighbours and build their relationship out of this.
It turned out for the better after all!...
It made us stronger and united all Singaporeans.
Isn't this fantastic!
Singapore is successful not due to pure luck but due to their hard work. the first ejected nation against their own will in the history of modern world will become the most successful and richest country in the next 15 years. Malaysia will continue to regress due to Mahathir's cronyism and lack of meritocracy.
And today, Singapore is extremely rich. 😭❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
If only Tunku Abdul Rahman is not a racist…LKY will lead and be PM Malaysia
@Zefju1🇲🇾 first, like my comment. Second, if TAR is not a racist, he wouldn’t kick SG out
He is the real politician, a game changer for Singapore, transformed swamps to skyscrapers & an inspiration for me 🙏🏻
As much as I dislike some of the policies of the current PAP government, it's scenes like these that'd make me sacrifice my life to help him realise his vision. anyone who does not fell the same isn't one who could be counted if the going were to get tough. In 1967, I was 6 years old and I know what Singapore was like then because my mother brought me around from geylang serai, chinatown, serangoon road, bukit timah beauty world. Without a doubt, he did a tremendous job.
just imagine if Lee Kuan Yew was prime minister of Malaysia for anytime back in the 1960s-70s, just imagine.... but now Singapore voila!

The Iron hero of Singapore and the the father of our nation. Yes, Singapore will survive it did!
@tranris5: Yes, a dictatorship with elections, which produced the highest standard of living in Southeast Asia.
NYONYANYONYA
I can't explain this. It's really beyond it. All Singapore schools should show this to their students!!
Respect to LKY for proofing the SG will survive and become the good country
even I Malaysians myself it's nice to see such country to succeed more then us and I really surprised of how much they wanted to do this because that's how us wanted merdeka and patient about it
LKY thought August 9, 1965, was going to be a 'moment of anguish' for him and his people (Singaporeans)
fast forward about 20~ yrs and until now, it's the Malaysian citizens that look back at August 9, 1965, as their moment of anguish

Not all "parting" are bad although its hurtful. Glad our "Parting" work out well if not , maybe we Singaporean would be suffering under the Malaysians whos interest is only their own interest. Compare us n them now, we see the vast difference. Not marginal difference but a vast difference. We may not be perfect but we are way ahead of them.

are u working in malaysia or somewhere else? i'm being fair here as im working in the finance industry i have met quite a number of prominent businessmen. Whether Chinese or Malay or Indian, they all 'Lari Tax' as we like to say here in Malaysia. Majority of tax is paid by Petronas as Royalties as well. But if you really get your facts right from the inside not the newspapers these are not the actual things happening. All lari due to lousy corrupt government officials.
Who make LKY CRY has to PAY for it, economically, militarily and psychologically
he cried because Singapore had to leave Malaysia, and for his nation as he thought Singapore couldn’t survive on its own
Why is it that Singapore has a National airline whose iconic stewardesses look like Fann Wong, Gong Li, Joanne Peh, Bettie Page and Dita Von Teese? They are the sort of girls who look as though they stepped out of Belgravia, where you see the prettiest in London.
LKY's one of the most perceptive men I have ever come across and you can learn something from him, as he has been a role model of mine since I was 16. Judging from your name, you're a member of the BNP or EDL.

the truth is that both sides were fooliah to think that 15 years of seperate political development could be ignored and the issues fixed with little effort and no time for the bonds to strengthen

This happened 46 years ago, today - BTW Gosh no other Malaysian PMs speak like Tunku Abdul Rahman did (and I do!) - HAPPY BIRTHDAY SINGAPORE! FROM A MALAYSIAN! :)
Can you imagine of Low Thia Kiang was PM back then. Singaporeans will all be overseas now working as a maid and coolies.

SINGAPORE was named "Singapura" after an ancient sanskrit name - SIMHA PURA which those two words means "Kota Singa or Lion City"..the true nounce r "Singa-po-re" that spelled "Singapura" with modern malay spelling..
