if you were such a great man and you could do it not at the expense of such things, why dont you go and give it a try and change another country into something even better than singapore? lets see how great you put your intelligence to shall we?
be it right or wrong he did so much for us, if not for him none of us would be where we are today and i dont get why the heck are people here still complaining and nitpicking rather than honouring a dead man

Joan Ng you can define the "great man" for us. If a great man means, suppressing free speech, suppressing civil liberties, and rule with repression, i dont want to be "great". but i can see, it would suit you to be a great lady

I have lived in Singapore 26 years I am from an European country, I can tell you Singaporeans , you had the best statesman ever, you Singaporeans complain about the iron fist and his not very usual ways of closing dissident´s mouths, well I live in a country where everything can be said and the chaos, corruption, inefficiency, useless statesmen etc, are never ending. We are all humans , we can have flows and we do not have to agree with every thing said and done by a Government, but listen Singaporeans, you had the best of the best, his intelligence, his passion, his righteousness, his morals

I am Malay and I was deeply heartened he gave the speech in the languages he could express himself in. Let's not make a big deal of why he spoke in Malay and who is it for because as a Singaporean, I was deeply touched by the speech whether it was in a Malay, English or Chinese. It is a sad occasion and I am really saddened by the loss of an individual who shaped and hallmarked a place I can call home. #RIPLKY

What we watched and listened is a moving speech from PM Lee Hsien Loong, and a grieving son. I felt the pain of loosing a good father when he delivered his speech in Mandarin, and paused, while holding back his tears. Our deepest condolences to the Lee family, also to Singapore. Mr. Lee Kuan Yew, may you rest in peace.

This man has gone peacefully and has lived a glorious life. From slum to a first class developed nation with no natural resources. We were so poor we even had to sell Christmas Island to build a bridge. Where are we now? A developed country with 5 million people on a once backwater fishing village. A financial powerhouse and one of the most important financial center in the world (behind London and NY), world's first class oil refinery, port, wafer fabrication manufacturing country, a GDP per capita that surpassed most western nations, a country that is a prime business hub with many investments from MNCs. A country that can stand on its own with NO aid at all from the UN. We have huge reserves and sovereign wealth funds and our net international investment position per capita is the 2nd highest in the world. A nation that has first class facilities, medical technology that is the best in the region, first class financial infrastructure, high speed internet, well paved roads, one of the top universities in Asia, a country that also has the top aviation facilities in whole SEA region . A nation that commands massive respect from the whole world and even USA. R.I.P

Really heartbreaking to see PM Lee holding back his tears and eventually tearing up on Channel 8 that day.
As a Singaporean in her 20s I can't say I witnessed the epic transformation Mr Lee has placed our country through - I was already born into a safe and secure nation. But my elderly relative and parents have always had a tremendous amount of respect for Mr Lee and would tolerate no ill words directed towards him, and seeing them all cry at the news of his passing really breaks my heart. We all know what a great man he is, to many Westerners or others he might be flawed in his policy towards freedom of speech and other liberties, but ultimately I am still glad that he had been the leader for Singapore at the right time. May your soul rest in peace and watch over our little island, Mr Lee.

i'm not singaporean, but lee kuan yew is probably the greatest statesman i'll probably see in my lifetime.
his critics, who say he sacrificed freedoms and liberty for security and prosperity, turn a blind eye to a simple historical fact:
BEFORE his singapore, the island with no natural resources and the people had nothing but poverty and despair. he made singapore so modern and developed that people start having "first world problems".for example, his critics have now the time, ability, and the freedom to criticize him because of what he did to singapore. it's the biggest irony. it goes to show that prosperity does bring freedoms, and good governance doesn't allow it to turn into chaos.

kudos to our current pm lee. as a son, he had to endure all emotions and be professional, and announce his father's death to the whole country. at some parts, he was seen to be on the verge of breaking down, but held on. as a son himself, having to address his father as 'mr lee kuan yew' instead of saying my father, was such a sad thing to me. when he spoke in chinese, i teared up imagining all that he may have been going through, right after his surgery. The passing of Mr Lee Kuan Yew marks the end of an era that saw Singapore transform from the third world country my grandparents lived through, to the international commercial hub and success it is today. Singapore's transformation is nothing short of a miracle; the result of Mr Lee's absolute conviction and passion. Never again, at least not in my lifetime, will there be another like him. As a Singaporean living abroad, I am very proud of Singapore and experienced the turning from a poor fishing port to a respectable modern country, offering a home and decent living to all citizens, something to be thankful for, when you just look around our neighbouring countries and the world.
I know many foreigners and its media have a negative view and conception about Singapore, but who cares! We have our sole democratic and patriotic right just like them, who are probably just as satisfied and consenting to their own country´s policies, or may be not ?
Mr Lee Kuan Yew was a great, visionary, pragmatic, sensitive and politically active statesman who accomplished tremendously for his beloved country, He left an ineradicable footprint in our minds and history, an ideal for all generations striving to live up to. My greatest respect!

His passing was the modern day equivalent of George Washington passing away in the US. He worked hard to build Singapore and may he rest in peace. The world benefited from his wisdom.

Yesterday, Singapore founding father " Mr Lee Kuan Yew " have passed away. I'm feeling very sad and grieve that such a great man have passed away. May him rest in peace and sending my deepest condolences to his families. We, Singaporean will always remember his great contributions to the country and we will continue the legacy that he left and always be proud to be a Singaporean !
Looking at Today newspaper, reading through all the articles regarding the contributions, devotion and commitment that Mr Lee Kuan Yew did for Singapore make me realized, how much he did and the amount of effort he put in to build a nation called Singapore. " From independence struggle, to nation building, to managing prosperity, to transitioning and having succession, and managing each of those steps while adapting as times change." quote by PM Lee Hsien Loong. When reading this statement makes me wants to cry as I could see that he is always here for Singapore, growing with Singapore and guiding the nation. We always have faith in his leadership and his foresight. As he make us believed that a small fishing village can transform into metropolis. In all aspect. from education, economics, policy, laws and governing, I think he did a great job, I like the fact that all races are equal, English is our first language so that all races are able to communicate and also it is an international language which make us Singaporeans able to survive in the fast pace world where communication is very needed. Native language is not neglected as well.
In all, this post is just to express my thoughts and to commemorate our founding father of Singapore " Mr Lee Kuan Yew" . We will miss you, thank you for your lifetime devotion to Singapore, we will always remember you !!! :'(
