  • *"You Don't Have to be Jewish" is a 1965 comedy album written by Bob Booker and George Foster, the team behind the 1962 comedy album The First Family. The album features Lou Jacobi, Betty Walker, Jack Gilford, Joe Silver, Jackie Kannon, Bob McFadden, Frank Gallop, and Arlene Golonka, in a variety of roles, mostly Jewish, performing a mixture of jokes and comedy sketches. The album was highly successful, with syndicated columnist Walter Winchell calling the album "the No. 1 seller in Suburbia" and noting that as a popular gift "it has replaced the fountain pen at Bar Mitzvahs." A sequel in 1966, “When You're in Love, the Whole World is Jewish”, largely reunited the original cast but replaced the unavailable Golonka with her friend Valerie Harper."You Don't Have to be Jewish to love Levy's" was an advertising campaign for Levy's rye bread that began in 1961 and ran through the 1970s

My dad had this LP and he used to sit and laugh and laugh along with it! Later, I grabbed the LP and played it over and over and pretty much memorized the skits and songs. I didn't understand all the nuances but it's all stuck with me (in bits and pieces) and I've been telling my husband about it for a long time. I finally found this RUclips segment and played it for him and talked and sang along with it for him! Now that I know this little slice of pure comedic genius is still around, I'll be back to listen again and again!

I became aware of it when a local radio station played back in the late 60s, "The Ballad of Irving". Fell in love with that novelty tune. When I called the station they told me they had obtained it from this album. I went to a local radio station & ordered a copy. Great skits & a great cast!

"The Ballad of Irving" was released on a 45 RPM in April 1966 and reached Number 34 on the Billboard top 100. It was credited to Frank Gallop. The record was a parody of Lorne Greene's hit "Ringo" which topped the chart about 18 months earlier.

Oh my goodness, thanks so much for posting the whole album. I found a CD of the original album, "You Don't Have to be Jewish," but not this one. So many funny lines I remember from childhood. "Steve McQueen is Jewish, would you believe it??" All the cultural references younger generations won't know. Ah, well. What great fun. I got to see Lou Jacobi live in Woody Allen's "Don't Drink the Water," I think in the 1960s, in NYC. Jacobi was a riot. Our cheeks hurt we laughed so much.

I see this was recorded at Columbia Recording studios in NYC. I presume it was performed in front of a live audience (vs a laugh track). Does anyone know anymore details about the performance? Like was it just the actors speaking into a mic reading lines in front of an audience or were they on a stage, for ex.? Did the studio have regular performances open to the public at that time? I can’t find much information about its production.
