• Boudicca & The Great B...
A whole host of Norman adventurers set about staking claims to the fragmenting Eastern Roman Empire in the late Eleventh Century. None was more feared in the 1070s than a certain mercenary commander named Roussel de Bailleul. His is an epic and tragic tale of greed, hubris and war. It also works as a nice precursor to the crusades and the other Norman campaigns elsewhere in Europe. (Which will be covered in upcoming videos)

Uhuhuuhuhuh, if there is enough valid sources, then cimbri or pre viking age scandinavia!!!!
DarkKing009 soon :)
He was a valiant warrior. Sometimes our friend, sometimes our enemy. Its name in our sources is known as "Ursel". He is known to us as an adventurous and fearless person. Do not let him forget his name and memory. Greetings from the Seljuks, Roussel. 👍
A small mistake - Sicily was conquered by the Aghlabids, not by the Fatimids. The Fatimid caliphate was established a century after the conquest of Sicily.
Quite right good sir. My bad.
The Aghlabids and Fatimids were Arabs. Nothing to do with Seljuk Turks. That's like saying Spanish people are exactly the same as Russians because they're both Christian countries. Besides- the Seljuk Turks were hardly defeated by the First Crusade. It was the Fatimids who suffered the most, being booted out of the Holy Land right after they'd conquered it from the Seljuks.
If you're going to use the term 'honourable' then the Seljuks were often infinitely more 'honourable' than Normans, and Byzantines at times. For example Alp Arslan returned the Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV back to Constantinople completely unscathed after defeating him at Manzikert, even providing him with an armed retinue for the journey. It was only after Arslan's death, and Romanos' death at the hands of his own people that Seljuks began moving into Asia Minor.
@Nadia Baig Such a waste of oxygen
@Nadia Baig who are saracens ? Funny that this word is still used lol, and how are Fatimites fellows to Seldjuks ? They have nothing in common at all, not even the same religious view.
@Nadia Baig hhh stupid kid, go learn some history, at this age Fatimides invented the pain we are using today, and produced the first real scientist, Ibn Al Haytham, just dont be salty about it ok kid ?
Thanks for documenting the critical role the “Normans” played in shaping the Mediterranean World - not just England /France.
Interesting to see the influence of the Normans all the way in Anatolia.
Keep up the good work man!! I watch A LOT of history channels on RUclips and I think I enjoy your videos the most. You go in depth and I love the map on the screen showing what your talking about. You'd be surprised how many channels leave out a map of what their video is about. You have the quality of a channel that has a million subs.
I love these. I especially love how so many of your videos focus on much less known bits of history, or detail that are often overlooked.
You've got yourself a new fan!
Sacha Daenens unknown to the usa !! History has been more used as a political tool throughout time than anything else... if you are really interested in "pure history" rather than " applied history" , then you should never depend on the mass media and popular culture , but be very academically smart
What? Mind Blown! A pre-crusade non-crusade ... but it gave other Normans ideas ... it's all becoming more clear ...
Love your channel still dont understand how it is so small. You actually talk about something besides popular history. Sub from me
It's a crime that I am only very recently finding this channel. Honestly, keep it up man. This is the type of historical channel I've been waiting for.
1:40 "seated in his own castle, where he occasionally launched raids upon the local population"
pretty much sums up the anarchism of the dark ages
Vern Etzel
So true stability was a rather rare thing for Europe and even when it did happen something always came around and stopped it.
Yet Europe has been at peace for over 70 years, the first time in human history. True stability began in 1945. It was nothing but gang warfare since the fall of Rome.
Peace for 70 years in europe? I think the balkans may disagree
You mean “anarchy”. Anarchism is a modern far left-wing political ideology.
It has become an extreme right wing ideology for over half a century now. And left anarchism parallels this "Austrian" doctrine in its hypocrisy.
Obscure history at its finest.
Makes me wanna play Total War again...
this is the kind of thing I hear while playing it, gives a lot of immersion
me too.... I love invading Ireland as Andalusia
I'm currently reading the Alexiad, and it's just at the Norman invasion of Dyraccium.
Napoleon Bonaparte incredible read.

Best f*ing youtube channel ever!! love it
Einar Havsteen-Mikkelsen by far
So glad I found this channel!
The guy sounds like Lu Bu to be honest, except he had a goal in mind: to carve out his own realm.
It's bad that I mostly know Lu Bu just from the dynasty warrior games. Guy was a badass
@History Time Lol, that's fine. I knew about Lu Bu from the Dynasty Warriors games too XD, which made me search him up for a bit.
He was, but he made a lot of stupid decisions to be honest. I don't really know what he was thinking though as some sources like the TV show The Three Kingdoms, portray him as a naive man with great skill. The Dynasty Warriors games portray him as being arrogant and unparalleled in battle. I ought to read either the historical context of the Three Kingdoms period or read the fantasy version.
Well Lu Bu inadvertently betrayed himself in the end by betraying everyone. Bohemond managed not to do that somehow
Just found this channel. Just wanted to drop in and say that you're amazing.
What a rowdy bunch.
always love our style of narration.
I love those videos about little know/forgotten characters
Your work is great and you deserve many more subscribers.
Another great video I just finished watching all of your other videos great job and keep up the good work, and if you ever get the time I would love to see you do a video covering the rise and fall of the Spanish Empire.
One of my favourite eras of history. I'm going to be starting a whole series on it called 'Colliding Worlds' in a few months time :)
History Time ok I'm looking forward to it take care and take it easy.
Great video and happy to see your channel grow! Keep up the awesome work!
Great videos - Im always watching. Would love little bits if more detail though - like in this video, what trick did he use to defeat him? Also, if you can mark locations on the map clearer that would be great. Either way, awesome work :)
You're a good story teller.
Great content
Very Interesting 👍🏼
Love you videos mate. However, do you plan on putting English subtitles sometime in the future? Love your videos either way.
Thanks mate! Its not at the top of my priorities at the moment, if the channel gets bigger then yes, at the moment i'm just madly writing away at the history of the human race.
Woah, that channel is growing fast!
I love History Time.
You should do some programs on the Italian version of Englands" Wars of the Roses.-I'm referring to the wars and struggles between the cadet branches of the originally French Angevin dynasty of Naples.Such characters as the two queen Joans of Naples and their fascinating lives.Battles just as bloodthirsty occured in this struggles and tragedies just as heartbreaking.Margaret of Anjou, a leading protagonist in England's Wars of the Roses and the wife of Henry VI was a descendant of one of the Angevin contenders to the Neapolitan throne.Shakespeare refers to her father as being the erstwhile contender to the throne of Naples in his Henry VI plays.
This is the first channel I've ever subscribed to. THIS is how you do shit right!
I would like better graphics though, detailing the lands and directions of armies and troop counts inside those lands with who is leading them. I grew up in history classes taught my military commanders. These details were very important.
Thanks bud. I would like better graphics too. Bear in mind I'm just one person writing, narrating and compiling all of this stuff for no payment on top of a full time day job. Maybe some time in the future I'll be able to hire an animator. For now it's just my words accompanied by images.
2:35 - just a small nit, the Muslim conquest of Sicily did not end until the early to mid 10th century, just a century earlier from the Norman conquest.
Nice
Please consider doing videos on Ancient Egyptian incursions in Mesopotamia
Ironic how Europeans end up harming each other more than invading muslims. Romanos IV Diogenes returns to his capital completely unharmed from his time as a Seljuk prisoner......only to be murdered right away by his own people. Rousel himself also could've been a great foe against the muslims, but chose instead to be one of Rome's greatest enemy. Greed seems to do more harm than anything else.
He should just relax and beeing on good terms with the Byzantines, in exchange they recognize his principality. A new Norman Kingdom woud had benefit the Greeks more than having their lands stolen from the turks
Geez, Normans we’re all over the place. Perhaps a video should be made on why Normans were doing this, what motivated them, and why they were so good at it.
We're motivated by God, Gold and glory. Pretty much.
@@noahtylerpritchett2682 you forgot the girls. 👌😎

Nice finnish map in the beginning
I always wondered why there was this random ass Norman duchy in Anatolia in Crusader Kings 2 around the 1066 bookmark.
I had no idea the Normans ever had a presence in Sicily
all because of rollo the Vikings who founded Normandy
Video on him coming soon :)
*[Viking Spoiler Alertness]*
Rollo AND Charles the 3rd said "the simple" (which is a mistranslation of the ancien meaning of the word ==> honest, pure, easy going...), for that deal ended up being what completely annihilated any further threats of viking incursions on the french coasts and main rivers. He turned a defeat into a successful investment. Turned Norse Viking Pagans into French Christians folk in just one or two generations. Normands
@@justarandomfrenchdude9091 never french always Norman till i die asshole
Just a correction. In 1074 John Doukas, Michael VII's uncle, was living on his estates near the Bosphorus as requested by Michael. He was actually sent to fight Roussel by the emperor and only entered open revolt after he was convinced by Roussel whilst in captivity. Roussel proclaimed him emperor but their forces fell victim to an ambush by Seljuk forces en route to Constantinople. John was captured and tonsured while Roussel escaped. John would of course survive these events and later play a role in Alexios' seizure of power.
The battle of manzkert caused the reformation of the varangian guard from two fighting units to one bodyguard unit for the emperor
❤
Good enough, but the maps aren’t very useful without some identification of the specific forces and locations referred to in the accompanying narration.
This is quality content. Consider me a new subscriber.
To classify all Normans as duplicitous is incorrect. Sure, mercenaries may have been, but then again, they make their intentions known- THEY ARE MERCENARIES. Loyalty was far more common by this point and Bailleul was an exception, not the rule.
Very interesting.. But way to much to take in so quickly..🤔😱
Why is Bosnia north of Kosovo and south east of Belgrade on your map?
Because Bosnia is a myth actually, all is Serbia
Amazing to think that were it not for the Normans, Istambul might still be Constantinople up to the present day...
Nah Turks were just too powerful.
s m g - If my grandmother had wheels, she'd be a bus. If any bunch of groups had been more unified and focused, they would have conquered and kept. But that's human nature, bickering and scheming and undermining. greedy and selfish, cunning and clever...
Episode on Alexios?
Yep. My favourite Byzantine emperor.
your narrative and infos are quite decent and you definitely deserve more subscribers. I would only suggest to find (more) relevant and good quality pictures (maps, illustrations) and better relate them with the story. Otherwise is just a distractions from what are you actually telling and gives a bad impression more than it have to or it deserves.
Thanks for the feedback bud. I'm working on making my own maps, it's a long process though as I'm not very computer minded. (Better with pen and paper)
I dont think you need that particularly if your upload rate will become sporadic. You mean you will also do visualizations/flat animations like others do?

wtf this guy is like the Chuck Norris of vikings.
roussel de bailleul is norman, blue area populated celts came anatolia after losing to roman empire.
In battle of dimitriges the Norman's destroyed for good
Seljuks man
Edward Archer thats the reason why Turks still in Anatolia
We have saying in Islam that by Allah sword is the real ruler of throne . Turks dominated Islamic world and Normans did Christianity as Turks were riders of vast steppes of Asia and Norman’s were daggers of oceans and seas .
What an awesome time to be alive....."son...let's go and make kingdoms!"....instead, now were stuck in this bullshit money slave system
Ok kid
Because there wasn't any slavery then? Fuedalism? You think you'd be royalty, if only you had a time machine, but you'd be nothing but a peasant. Don't forget about indoor plumbing, public sanitation and antibiotics. Hahahaha ... you're a complete fucking idiot.
Looks like someone didn't get enough hugs as a child, bitter much? Back then there were places to explore. Now the only thing to explore is finding degenerate cuntfaces online.
Romanos could have been a good emperor, if he didn't have so many political opponents.
I heard that Turks where on the Norman side at the Battle of Hastings. Have you heard this?
How did you hear that? Can you tell me? It piqued my interest. This is the first time I've heard from you that we are in a hasting war.
I believe we gonna met Him in Hell
what happened when you woke up, is this your dream lol ?
I doubt those numbers in Sicily are true
Newone Very you're right numbers are probably inflated but not that much, in sicily there is a form of enterntaiment called pupi opera which is based on the astonishing victory of the normans against the muslims
It was not called Anatolia then, and Turkey did not exists. Why not use the historical names: Byzantium, Armenian Highlands, Eastern Roman Empire? Again, falsification of history.
Muslims had 12000 light horsemen and romonos had 200000 volunteered soldiers who came for loot but muslims attavked and romonos fled and his army abondoned campaign .
At no time in Byzantine history could they field an army of 200,000. The largest Byzantine armies were 30-40,000 at most. Most of their field armies were 5,000-15,000. Manzikert was indeed their largest field army in centuries - about 40,000. But, half of the army was on the other side of Lake Van during the battle. And some of their army deserted before the battle of Manzikert. Romanos probably had about 15,000 for the battle of Manzikert, which is backed up by the sources that only a couple thousand soldiers actually died in the battle.
@@judsonwall8615 from the beginning Byzantines altered history and misreported everything...Byzantines had 60000 of their royal army but rest of the army was made up of mercenaries from all corners of europe and eastern slavs .It was written by European scholars that Byzantines had million troops.. Muslim historians mentioned 300000 total Byzantines forces...
I tried to like your history style and videos but i find you lack structure and a plan in your presentations , it's just one event after another with slowly drifting static images and occasional HD clips. Comparing to simply reading Wikipedia historical pages, i find no advantage to watching your videos. To present history you need to have done your own synthesis of it and for that you need to be able to do synthesize and organize information. You're just throwing random things in chronological order, that's not good enough. You need to do much more work before making a video. This is sloppy. If you want to do this, you have to work much harder at it. This is student sloppy like, not accomplished amateur and nowhere close from professional.
