Based on a rather grisly story about rebellious Cossacks by Gogol, Janácek's glorious Taras Bulba features three colorful, graphic, exciting scenes of love, murder, mayhem and transcendence. It has enjoyed many successful recordings, most of them on the Czech Supraphon label. Here are the ones to savor, and a few to avoid.
