Pressure Point (1990)

- The revised 1990 version of the recruiting film.
To aid navy recruiters, program vividly illustrates the challenging and demanding training program that comprises the Aviation Officer Candidate School, NAS, Pensacola, FL from one participant's viewpoint. Using a subjective camera technique, this program appropriately emphasizes and clearly conveys the backbone of aviation. Reasons for strict discipline, physical training, classroom instruction and becoming a team player are also demonstrated. "Navy owned, Marine Corps trained"

I love the way this clip shows how the silly things in Boot Camp or OCS pertain to real combat situations.
I knew him as SSgt Holt, in VMA-223 I went to Iwakuni with him, I was a SSgt at the time myself. He was a real nice guy
In Iwakuni right now, love it
Hey, what years did you serve? my dad was in that same unit in Cherry point, North Carolina. His name is David Roth and he was a 6315 Aircraft Communications/Navigation/Weapon Systems Technician, AV-8. I know harriers are being phased out now, I don’t think this MOS exist anymore
@@jammo800 I was in VMA-223 from 1991 to 1996
@@markb.7642 That’s awesome, you were there the same time my dad was there. What was your MOS?
@@jammo800 Nor does one of my MOSs from my Cherry Point days as an Aviation Photo Electronics Tech 6671, and my old squadron there (VMCJ-2) is gone as is its hangar. Really enjoyed my time at Pensacola.
He was my drill instructor in San Diego MCRD platoon 1018 honor platoon this made my blood curdle. Best part was last day b4 graduation he called us marines.
Gunnery Sergeant Holt, United States Marine Corps, was known as the Anti-Christ. He was PTing his class (23-89 I believe) in 'Hell' one day when condensation starting falling from the ceiling. He said, "It's raining in Hell!! Maybe I can make it snow. Mountain Climbers!! Do it!!"
I remember making it rain in Navy boot. Was not fun.
Sounds about right from my recollection. I didnt serve under Holt. But I know his type
That was what we did every morning in the Ranger Batt . In the laundry room with the dryers on, FULL BLAST , Mountain Climbers And Push-Ups Until we were soaked in sweat . Then we Fireman’s Carried each other up and down the stairs to the third floor for an hour .
you all probably dont give a damn but does any of you know of a trick to get back into an instagram account..?
I somehow lost the account password. I appreciate any tricks you can offer me
@David Kenzo Instablaster ;)
I wish I had seen this before reporting to Pensacola in 1966. Come to think of it, it's probably better that I didn't. Might have scared me off. So glad I stuck it out. Flew heavy A3 aircraft off carriers and retired as a USAirways captain. It's been quite a life thanks to the US Navy.
I was in class 24-89er - Staff Sergeant Carl Matthews, United States Marine Corps was our 'Dad'. We started with ~84, graduated ~42, of which around half were of the original class. Gunnery Sergeant Holt PTed the hell out of me for smiling in the chow hall. First Sergeant Carlton Kent was also part of the D.I. contingent as well. He went on to be a Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps. I have the deepest respect for these Marines. I served 22 years as a Naval Aviator, retiring in 2012 and never forgot for 1 minute that I was Marine Corps trained.
JimmyDickens1 god bless ya, sir:)
JimmyDickens1
Sir... Our Nation, as well as my family and I, say thank you for your service to our country. Words will never express our gratitude. Thank you for keeping our country safe and for our freedom.
You are patriots and heroes.
SFMF!!
Jimmy Dickens1, felt that pain. Last AVROC class, 16A-90 reported 28 June 90; met the anti-Christ in the Regimental classroom for 5 minutes of "who the hell was that??" hit-and-run PT on day 1, then had Ssgt Matthews for his next-to-last class (that tour). 50 went in, only 26 came out. Even today, "just get 'em" makes me twitch toward mountain climbers, while any game spinner reminds me of the "wheel of pain." Told us at the end he hated running...what if he'd loved it?? Awesome experience to be from.
"Maybe I'll get my Tomcat today." LOL in your dreams.
Saw Top Gun too many times I concluded.
Honor Class 01-90 "Holt's Final Disciples" and I'm at the very tail end of my career. Simply remarkable to be able to see the "Anti-Christ" motivating future Naval Aviators as I can reflect on 24 years of Naval Service. To this day, one of the most inspiring moments of my life was having Gy Holt line us up to convey the news that the Berlin Wall had come down.
I truly owe him a debt of gratitude for helping to mold a cocky punk into a young Naval Office.
Badass
7:29 Typical Navy Enlisted ..am I right?
@@thetreblerebel Yep lol. I guess it depends on what rate you have. I was an AO / Naval Aircrewman so they guys I flew with were mostly pretty cool. Once in a while there was a crewman that looked like a goober kinda like the guy you pointed in this vid.
I almost forgot about how the women just got to run up to the 12 ft wall & touch it, then run around it. And then for the next obstacle instead of an 8 foot wall, they got a 5 ft wall + a longer time to complete the O course. I went through Naval Aircrewman Candidate School (not AOCS) in the summer of 1990.
BTW - I remember being in the hangar one day and a crusty first class petty officer got irriated with some smart ass E-4 and referred to him as a "punky cock" - the reverse of the phrase you used but just as effective.
@@thetreblerebel I think that was David Koresh🤣
To all who have gone through this rigorous training, and have earned your Wings, Congratulations!
They used officer candidates from my AOCS class (07-89) for the film because we were only a few days from graduating and weren't very busy at that point. It was fun for us because we were working with GYSGT Holt in a different way than we were used to--no real pressure, unlike the usual stress of AOCS. In fact, 07's actual drill sergeant was GYSGT F.X. Donahue, but the film crew decided to use Holt. Good choice--he really was that terrifying. Worse, actually, in real life.
GySgt Donahue was terrifying in his own quiet way. It didn't come across well on film, I'm sure. 33-87.
Looks like Gunny Holt went on to be Representative Holt for the state of Iowa.
Andrew Studley yup
holy shit
Steve Holt!
Reported to AOCS about eight months after this was filmed with Class 16A-90, when he was Asst. CDI. I can only imagine him later as a cop PT'ing a reckless driver on the side of the road, or as the whip in the Iowa State House. Honored to have been tortured...er, trained by him.
Yup. I emailed him recently and he answered.
I was a stash Ensign working at Student Control while this was being filmed. Was there two years from ‘88 to ‘90 when I commenced API. Watched the marching sequences being taken and retaken. GySgt Holt was a legend. And those were times I’ll never forget.
Our military deserve nothing but RESPECT!
I'm in this! 4 hours of filming for about 2 seconds of screen time. 😊
What did you fly after graduating?
@@ViperSRTnACR I was an NFO, flew S-3s for a tour, then I did the Royal Navy exchange tour so I also earned a set of Observer wings and flew in the Seahawk, their version of the H-3. (Sorry for the late reply, this just happened to pop up in my recommendations and I opened it to show my boys what I looked like in a movie.)
@@MartinMCade When do you show up in the video?
Gunnery Sergeant Holt was an absolute national security asset. It takes the best to produce the best, and Gunny Holt delivered.
Batt II, 28-88 "Long Distance Voyagers." Started with 67, graduated with 27.
Gunny Holt - we referred to him as "Skeletor," was in Batt I and we tried our damnest to never, ever, cross paths with him. Retired in 2015. Good times!
My first introduction to then Staff Sergeant Holt was with Class 09-88 in January 1988 with a 0500 wake up call that included a Marine Alarm Clock (metal trash can lid and billie club). We soon learned the Hell Room in the Batt I barracks after completing the Poopy Death March and after a while looked at it with a sick sense of pride in that no other class had a Hell Room where they could get stronger by the minute. LOL! "Snap and pop", "Eye of the Tiger", and "I'll tell ya what there candidate" are all GYSGT Holt catch phrases that I'll always remember. Gunnery Sergeant Steven C. Holt, USMC was every bit the Anti Christ and I'm thankful he was my Drill Instructor.
Our DI called 'em hop n pops.
Great movie!) Sgt Holt is my hero! I am a retired Marine Colonel but I would love to have a drill instructor like him!
Thanks for sharing!
I was in class 06-90. GYSGT Woodring was our Dad , but we were all terrified of the ‘Holtergeist’. The reality is we had no reason to fear any of them, They’re job was to make us into warriors, and they did. Woodring, Holt, Matthews, Kent, Ford, Donahue. Gamballi, Imenez. They all contributed to our success. We all earned our wings, but they made it possible. All these years later I have at least as much respect for all the Staff, Gunny, and First Sergeants I knew as any Staff officers I ever met.
I was in AOCS Class 13-89 when they were filming this. GSgt Holt, USMC was our senior drill instructor.
I was in 21-88 with SSGT Donahue..but I had plenty of time in front of Gunny Holt! Man this brings back a lot of memories. Just seeing the Bat One Bulldog painting outside the drill instructors office brought back all the good times spent in there :-)
I was in his first class 03-88, “ Holt’s Hellfighters”… just an incredible individual.
Brings a tear to my eye. We he calls out the Jody at the end, pure joy.
Each time we watch this, it not only rreinforces the pride we have as American's, it shows the devotion to protect and serve our country. Thank you very much all men and women who presently are serving, who have served our country, and most especially those who paid the ultimate price to protect us and keep us free. We are able to choose what we would like to do at any given time of the day or night because of you. Thank you. You are appreciated more than you'll ever know.
Gunny Francis Xavier Donahue Non Commissioned Officer in Charge Battalion II - trained officer here (if you were there, you know my pain). Gunny Holt was a presence we in Batt II skillfully avoided at all cost. The man is a legend.
Proud member of Class 08-78 (honor). Sgt. Johnson was outstanding. 21 in, 10 commissions, 7 wings.
Class 30-85, GYSGT Hawks, NCOIC. RIP!
My last name is Macklin. This video was pretty awesome to find 🙂👍
Also, my grandpa is John Macklin and he was a Navy Pilot in WW2. Super cool 🙂
Look up the old video, from the 1970s!
LOL he thought he was going to be Tom Cruise in top gun.
I do like how this video shows why you need to have attention to detail , following orders without questioning them and teamwork
The gunny retired as a 1st sgt and is now a congressman from Iowa or somewhere like that
I love this video! Thanks!
I was an enlisted in the Army at Pensacola at the time. We used to go to NAS and watch the DIs yell at officers and think, poor guys, they probably thought when they joined as officers they wouldn't have to do this shit. Then they would get in their dress unis and come over to NTTC and try to get us to salute. I remember one that tried to dress me down, to which I informed him, come back at graduation and I'll gladly render my respect, until that time hit the bricks candidate. He wasn't happy, and I never saw him again after that; kind of wished he'd have come back for that salute, I would have been as good as my word. - lol
Sad part is I went back there a few years ago and all those buildings are pretty much gone or completely renovated due to the hurricane. I remember when the survival school was also a museum you could visit. Now it's completely separate; asked a candidate where the where they did carrier 'quals' now that there wasn't a carrier in P-Cola anymore, he informed me they don't even really fly there anymore either.
This sure brings back a lot of memories. I graduated with Class 21-86 "Sosa's Blackjacks"; Drill Instructor was SSgt Jose Sosa, USMC.
As a Marine who graduated from Parris Island and OCS, this video makes me chuckle! Our Drill Instructors are outstanding and give everyone a fresh perspective on life 😂
This was the first GoPro Camera inuse and the first Vlogging ever.
His first name was GYSGT. That was all that we needed to know.
--AOC, Class 29-88.
Play this at 25% speed......funny as hell.😂
Sgt Holt was our drill instructor Platoon 1126 MCRD 1980
He made SSgt with 1062 D Co 1981...My senior. Look up "Steven Holt Iowa House Rep"
Wow, there are a lot of similarities still in Pensacola to this day. I remember in Naval Aircrew Candidate School @9:06 taking a picture after graduation in front of that bird which is now a different fighter. Down the street is the Navy Yard where I’d eat chow with the boys before swimming in flight gear. The next scene is literally the ‘ol Aircrew barracks. I’d march all of my Marines in that exact spot there every morning facing the same way. How times haven’t changed.
Brings So many funny thoughts and Good Feelings !! Class 40- 82
Thank You !!
This was easier than Class 39-71, GYSGT J.F. Ogden USMC and LT T.J. Prall, USN, Class Officer. But, about 1/3 of us made it through. I retired in 1992 after flying Phantoms for most of my career. It was worth it!
Did you ever know a phantom pilot by the name of Mead? Call sign Spit? I served with him while stationed at LFTC PAC in Coronado. He was a LtCol then.
@@twright3802 No, I didn't know him. I was NAS Oceana, VA for my first tour in VF-31, and then in Japan for my second tour in VF-161 on the Midway.
OUTFREAKINGSTANDING!, Gunny Holt! Shoulda' been YOU instead of Lou Gossett Jr. in "Officer & A Gentleman"!
M20L35 except for the fact that Gunny Holt was probably only a PFC/Lance Corporal maybe Corporal when Officer and a Gentleman was filmed and released.
Ginny Holt could have been the same wide eyed Marine Cora recruit probably wondering where he was. One of my pilots was a candidate of Gunny Holt a few classes earlier...he survived.
Lou Gossett wasn't very good in that role. Maybe you had to be an AOC to notice that. GySgt Welcher USMC, who was at AOCS in the fall of '80 when I was an AOC, was a technical adviser for the movie and was actually in the movie briefly when a class came "running on by..." I remember most of the drill instructors who were there at the time. Welcher, SSgt Macias, Sgt Farley who later came back as an AOC and was a Navy Pilot, SSgt Hatcher, GySgt Clark (?), SSgt Brown. All great leaders in my book. Sgt Farley was such a character, hid in a locker of a classmate who left his lock open and exploded out of the locker when the AOC opened it . We counted off on the veranda BEFORE marching into chow and beating the hell out of that metal plate in the doorway. "Hatchbody, snatch the hatch" Good times and bad times. I'd love to do it again! I even liked the swamp! Class 23-80 and SSgt Macias USMC. "23, FLY TO BE FREE"
@8:04 what’re you doing Macklin ? WHAT ARE YOU DOING MACKLIN?! WHY ARE YOU EYEBALLING AREA?! WHY ARE YOU EYEBALLING AREA?!

That is my favourite part!)))
AOC Class 29-69, SSG Timothy Rapes - a fine DI. The best part of my 32 years in the navy and army.
Class 25-76, Batt 2. Looking for the older version of Pressure Point, late 70's. Oh, memories of SSGT Little and Marsden
SSGT Marsden was in Batt III in my day; he primary MOS was a tank commander, as I recall. My DI was SSGT Perry. When I completed in '76 (I was AVROC so I was there for two summers) it was Gunny Hill. I'll never forget Hill, Gunny Wittstruck w/ his coke bottle glasses and the rest of the crew. I did see SSGT Penn in '75 but he was in Batt III as well. (Penn was the DI in the 1st version of this film) So I never had any personal interaction w/ him. Lt Ice was the OIC in '76 and I'll always remember him. Capt Phillip R. Craven was the CO of the whole shooting match in that day. He went out of his way at our commissioning to talk to the families of every new Ensign. I'll never forget that.
My cousin was in Desert Storm. He advised me to watch this video how D.I.s we’re back then.
Still shooting film in 1990. Well, hot dawg!
I was in 12-89 GySgt Woodring's First Class. I sure remember GySgt Holt and that they were filming this with one of his graduating classes.
It was filmed with 07-89, a GSGT Donahue USMC class, when we were Candidate Officers.

That would be cool
WHAT ARE YOU DOING MAQUELIN, WHY ARE YOU EYEBALLING THE AREA?!?! 😆
That barrel nut sticking out of door three doesn't look like a screw on the landing gear to me...
I think they used the original script, but the guy filming the new version clearly didn't know where the landing gear was.
After watching this last night, I set to thinking- "who trains the DI's?" I'd be curious to see a doc on how they train these guys to be how they are, haha. I really wanted to be a DI when I was in high school, however a health issue kept me out of the military....so off to college I went!
Might depend on the sort of job in the military too; some of the military jobs you would apply to after you're done college might make said health issue less of a concern than they would in the enlisted ranks.
That ship sailed a little while ago. Though one of my friends was able to get into the Air National guard in his upper 30's with prior service in the Navy as full enlisted, and also again as a National Guardsman for a time after he got out of the Navy. Guy is now 44 years old and gives guys half his age a run for their money, haha.
StormLaker1975
Run for their money in health? Fitness? Something else?
He's just in really great shape. He lifts weights, runs, does those warrior type obstacle course races, haha. Both his boys are athletes and they have a hard time keeping up to him!

Ah, I would file that under both health AND fitness, then.

If any of our classmates from 09-89 that are all over this film. Gunney Holt, Antichrist is classic. Does anyone have the tryout bootleg DI tryout video video we got a hold of , SSGT Hudson roast, for our graduation party, get a hold of me. Class 10-78 Gunnery Sergeant Daggs......best in the business. 2,300 Tomcat hours later, yep it was worth it...........Pigpen
"...the loose screw in the landing gear?" Not a single word in that question was correct.
Its because they reused the almost exact script from the first version of this made in the 70s which did show a loose screw in the gear.
