After playing in an amp for a week with my new string I play headphones on for night practice. I hear annoying overtone, specially when releasing string bends I bought new string, I almost change change my 1 week old string. I searched how to get rid of overtone and found this video, This really helpful!
I have been told and also read that the overtones are caused when the neck joint is overly tight. Which means that bolt ons can be slightly loosened to dampen transmission much like a truss rod adjustment slightly alters frequencies. In any case, this over tightening, whether dovetail or bolt on, transmits unwanted frequencies that appear in several ways from phasing, fluttering, distortion, harshness and as [discordant] ringing harmonics between a pair of strings. In my case, the clashing of notes on an Am open chord (open high E and C on the B string) is annoying enough in a quiet environment for me to return the acoustic. As you mentioned, not much of an issue in a live setting. Your comments?
Always learn something from your videos, Randy. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. That's why I watch every one of your offerings, there is always something new to learn. Keep up the good work and may the good Lord bless you and yours this holiday season.
You all probably dont care at all but does anybody know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I somehow lost the login password. I love any assistance you can give me.
@Adonis Lochlan I really appreciate your reply. I found the site on google and im trying it out atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later with my results.
Good information. You don't hear those kind of things so much in Acoustics. If the wood is carved to a certain note and if the wood is vibrating, one string will be louder than another one if it is tuned to the same note.
exactly! a good example is tap tuning an acoustic guitar top to a certain note, usually a note the guitar is intended to sound its best at. thanks for watching and commenting Jerry, always appreciated!
Love to see Q-ball!! I had an acoustic here not long ago with strange overtones, every time the guitar was played it sounded like a piano was playing along....very strange. It turned out that the slots in the nut were too narrow for each of the strings. After widening ever so slightly the string slots, the piano overtones went away. Have a great evening, Hoold Ooon:D
ah yes! I've seen that happen before! sometimes it'll drive you nuts trying to hunt down and fix unwanted tones and noise like that. thanks for viewing Suzanna! have a great weekend you way! they're saying we're going to wake up to a white one tomorrow morning! hold onnnnn!!! :D
It just about did drive me crazy looking for what was causing the overtones, it was very strange....On a much lighter note, we had snow down here for the first time since 1993. It was a white one all day Friday and today! Merry Christmas to you and your Family!!!
Great info Randy! I have a Epiphone Studio, that has an overtone on the 6 th string(low E) at the 5th fret(A note). It is weird because it adds like a C note overtone. It is only apparent when I use overdrive. I put a strip of felt between the bridge and stop tailpiece and I wove a strip through the strings at the headstock just past the nut. It seemed to help. It is the only guitar I own that has a overtone. Thankz
yep, that's about the only thing you can do with overtones, it's weird how some guitars have them and some does not, I've even seen identical guitars where one had overtones and the other didn't, it depends on a lot of things. thanks for watching and commenting!
shoved some cotton wool balls under the strings at the bridge on a top loader tele seem to shut up those nasty back over tones I was getting, now its crispy clean
When I was in a band in the late 60's the lead guitar player used to shove a cigarette down under the strings behind the nut of his Tele to stop the odd sounding notes and when he traded up to a Strat he taped the springs in the back to stop the same thing. Fenders were a new style of guitar and there where all kinds of odd things to work out. And what was this "string tree"? lol
That is the reason by instinct I learned muting with both hands... when we played really loud... it was a problem.. unless you wanted feedback... lol..
yes! it seems the louder you play and the more gain used you notice it and hear it more! we used to play extremely loud and it was a constant battle for me, accept for when I wanted that Ted Nugent feedback lol
Not sure how to send you a message but I bought a guitar stand a few days ago and the seller asked what kind of finish it had. I told him it was a gibson les paul and he told me not to use it because it would destroy the finish. I have had an 82 Tele on the same type without an issue. He told me epiphones would be fine but most high end guitars would react. Perhaps this could be a topic for discussion on why it happens and how to prevent it. Love your channel and have learned how to do most of my own work including a neck reset. Thanks
might be a good subject for a video! thanks for the idea! I have one stand I put my Martin Tyminski model guitar in when I first got the guitar, left it in the stand over night, picked it up the next day and it was stuck to the stand! the rubber on the stand looked like it had melted into the finish! it did a rough number on the finish too. this is caused by a chemical reaction, something in the ingredients of the finish and the rubber that obviously does not mix. I have left one of ht other Martins in that same stand for days and nothing likr that ever happened. thanks again for this idea.
Great video! Out if curiosity, How does a pickup pick up vibrations through the wood? From my limited knowledge Pickups only react to a magnetic metal. I can bang two drumsticks together in front of my guitar and no sound will come from the amp
In fact electric guitars no matter how much they resonate you only pick the sound from the strings. If a string "overvibrate" or "undervibrate" you'll definitely hear it in your amp
@@selfhealing1047 Perhaps we should remember that when a guitar body vibrates, the pickups will also vibrate, thereby altering the distance and angle of the pups from the string. (That was the simple version).
Hello Randy! I have a problem with one guitar. Relief is way too big but the truss rod won't turn any further. There are 11-52 strings on the guitar and I won't put any thinner, cause then it ain't gonna sound well. I didn't use the trick with clamps and block yet. Here's what I wanna ask! The neck is VERY thick. It's like it wasn't done properly. :D Therefore it's not comfortable to play at all. I'd really like to turn it into thinner soft-V profile which seems FANTASTIC to me on the other guitar. And I'm pretty sure that if I make the neck thinner, the neck will become weaker and more flexible. So the truss rod will become able to straighten it more! Am I right, mate? :)
yes you are! :D many years ago I used to take a small piece of glass and scrape the back of neck shaving them until I got it thin enough and down to the profile I wanted, a rasp is a lot faster job but I didn't have rasps back then and glass worked well. I would also recommend taking the adjustment nut completely off and oiling the threads before trying to tighten the truss anymore.
Even though I put “foam” under my strings behind the nut and bridge, whenever I suddenly mute all my strings, I still get really loud nasty overtones. No it’s not my muring technique because I can just mute all the strings and stun and ONLY hear overtones. Please help me. I don’t know how to remedy this
Hello there, would like to ask you something! On my acoustic I have noticed lately that when pushing the third fret on the B string, except for the D note which is expected, i can hear a slight A note (much higher than the D) which sounds like a harmonic/overtone, which get really loud expecially when strumming,,, in fact this is happening a little bit in all the strings but the positioning i mentioned is really evident and clearly heard... could you give me any possible solution? Thnx in advance and good job with your videos btw
it probably is overtones between where you note and the nut or between the nut and the pegs. try wrapping a sock just above your nut between the nut and pegs and see if that stops it. thanks for checking out my videos!
I use hair scrunchies (shamelessly stolen from my girls) on my bass guitars. If you listen to the closing music on my videos you'll hear a real nice wolf tone from the acoustic guitar.
yes! I wish I had mentioned those in the video, they do work well! gonna go check out your wolf tone right now, I never niticed it before. thanks again brother!
Thanks, I found this info useful. Helped me silence a klanging autoharp string!

Great video! Your dog has a lovely voice too.
I get something like that on my Gretsch behind the bridge. A strip of foam woven over/under/over/under all six strings fixes it
nice video man. Sick house!!!

a Sitar…. but I don’t have to now cus my guitar sounds like one now. !!

Also Putting A Piece Of Foam Just Above The Nut And Under The Strings Helps To Mute "Overtones"
Another good one Randy and with Cueball too? Damn! This calls for a beer! Thanks Much! DaveyJO
haha had to throw a Q fix in there! :D thanks for checking it out Daveyjo! cheers!
Another great video. Thank you Randy.
Im getting overtones but not from behind the note and cant rid of them

Your girl friends pony tail scrunchie works great!
Great video! Have you done a video on a way to fix a wolf tone on an acoustic? My D35 does not like the F note on the 8th fret of the A string.
I need to do a video on this! thanks for the reminder and thanks for watching and commenting!
Randy Schartiger Thanks man! Looking forward to it and thank you for the informative videos!

@@RandySchartiger It happens to Nitrocellulose finishes. Also, contact cleaner dissolves the finish, so be careful when spraying.

Turn your volume up and hit the guitar with a hammer. You'll hear something!

But what would I have to do to refinish it? I'd like to keep it matte/satin.

U must have a Taylor
Hey Randy! Would Single string trees..on for each string be a benifit on a relecaster
^^ Telecaster
yes, anything to shorten the distance between the peg and the nut will help reduce if not kill overtones.
Randy Schartiger thanks
Interesting Stuff Randy I don’t know much about over tones!!!!!! Keep warm Hold On!!!!)))☃️☃️☃️❄️❄️❄️👍🏼😊
yep the cold is coming, it's already here! a good time to work on guitars and make videos! thanks much Steve! :)

CueBall is a STAR...ha ha
