Man I would love to collect old school buses. These models bring back childhood memories. I rode in the GM’s and Ford Models too. Love the sounds of those motors. I also love the old motor coaches too.
My high school has really old gasoline buses. Probably from the 70s-80s. They sounded great. Loved the big beefy gas engines. There was a pretty steep hill going down into a flat area. The buses would load at the top of the hill and the bus drivers would haul arse down that hill. Was loads of fun for us all, until one day my bus hit a manhole thing and bent the rear axle. Well, being the underfunded school we were, it wasn't fixed or replaced and for the rest of the time I had to ride that bus, it had an awful bumping going down the road. If I could get hold of an old big-engine gasoline-powered manual transmission bus, I totally would and I would turn it into an RV.
I love the windshield defroster fan facing the driver. haha. As a kid, I noticed this on a bus once -- not my regular bus, but I knew the friendly bus driver -- so I mentioned this. The driver, without missing a beat, sly replied with a huge smile -- "DHPT -- Driver Have Privileges Too"
That bus is similar to the 1977 Blue Bird International Loadstar 1700 especially with the way the transmission sounds and even the dash console also resembles the 1976-78 International Loadstar 1700! Nice bus!
I've been waiting to see this vid! Gorgeous bus! I believe 1982 was the last year of the mint green interior. I drove a 1983 BB and rode several, and they all had tan interiors.
Awesome driveing thru my hometown of Winona,MN. Bummer I didn't know you were going thru at the time I would of loved to chat about the chevy bus. Bummer I didn't know you about 10 years ago I sold my 1985 IH S1800 77passenger Thomas bus. It had a straight 5 speed with the DT 466 was a excellent bus in really good shape at the time. I miss collecting busses i did it for enjoyment till I ran out of room. Thanks for sharing your videos on here brings back great memories i had of rideing and driveing these buses. I drove in 98 and still had some old chevys in the fleet. We had a 82 chevy Thomas i drove on route then later in around 2000 i got to drive a 84 IH s1800 blue bird on route
You should do a startup of all your new buses! Unfortunately it’s hard to find good footage of someone starting one of those Crown buses, I would love to see that!
I love this video with the clip you were in Minnesota and made a rail road stop.. I cannot wait to see your chevy cutaway video and the Ward pick up video
Aww man this brought back sooo many memories. I used to ride a 1982 BB in elementary school. Wish I could find me one and an 85 Thomas, both manual 4 speeds.
I agree the interior is emaculant inside .. I too love the mint green I think it was 1984 model year was the last on the Wards and Blue Bird I think I think Wayned carried the wall color in mint green with Red seats on our 85 Chevy Blue Bird. thanks for sharing
Also at 1:17 that was the same model an old Evesham Township School District bus 10. Last ran as a ward in 2001. Two weeks later came out as a 2001 blue bird diesel.
i have a 1978 International Carpenter with a 404 v8 and Allison AT545 it was a ex School Bus in Ohio with they went to 8 way flashers and it was the First Bus with a Air Ride Susp and Air Ride Seats i bought it in 1995 and no rust it was Bus #5
I always loved the deep Emerald Green paint on the front consoles of Blue Birds. As a kid, it was one of those things that made BlueBirds seem much more elegant and definitely better than any other brand. Combined with the Bird and Streamer and mostly the Distinctive Roof Cap, BlueBirds always seemed like the Cadillac of school buses.
The bridge that was one lane in each direction was the new bridge while the original bridge was being restored. The finally got the work done and both bridges are open.
Nice Video Sir The Only Thing I Would Keep In Your SB Collection Is The 2 BBirds bro. To answer your question about the BBird Interior Color, Bluebird went with the Milky White Color Interior which it is still known for in 1984. As A 90s child I've rode on the S1700 model of BBird from 1984 by United Quick In Chicago in 1998. This Bus Was Milky White With Mint Green BBird Seats in it. Thank You So Much For Your Videos Sir. Keep Em Coming Tom. Love & Blessings💙🚍🙏
The sound of the transmission reminds. Me of the bus I rode to school my last seven semesters my Last bus driver had a GMC ward bus before that my uncle drove school bus too he had a Ford superior bus
My father drove school buses here in New Brunswick,Canada. The buses here were governed at 58 mph.Alot of the driver,s would unhook the govener's,,the ford 330 and 350 and 366 gm.
oh man a perfect crown. has a tag axle. i know of a guy here that would want one but hasnt found one sadly. he had a crown but it was a single rear axle and not a tag axle like this one is.
I would love to ride on a school bus like that again and I have done as a kid, growing up in Central Canada and going to summer camp. As I am blind, I have a question about the jackknife door. How do you close it securely from the outside? I tried to do that with a school bus at an overnight camp I had gone to (for the blind in Cotage Country) back in the 80s, but I couldn't get it all the way shut so it would be secure. I remember the swinging lever, which opens and closes it from the inside, but what about outside?
Hello sir!! My husband and I recently acquired a 1986 blue bird that we are converting into a tiny home. If you could please let us know where you get your parts or if you know where to get repair manuals? I would greatly appreciate the information!
My grandmother drove an 89 diesel Ward GMC with manual trans. I don't know why, but anything with a Ward from that just crept along when going uphill in this era regardless of the chassis.
had you thought of getting a bus with a Superior body? they been defunct in the 1980s when its parant company Sheller Globe Corp stopped making them. before that they were known as Superior coach. they some were on International Loadstar, and the S series, the Ford B700 chassis and chevy. the type B minibus the Superior Pacemaker thats very hard to find now. If the Crown has a Detroit Diesel the old 2 stroke Scott from Bus Grease Monkey will work on it he is a travelling vintage bus mechanic driving a 1947 Gm silversides bus. he can do old schoolies. he has a youtube channel Bus Grease Monkey and Indiana Diesel his son.
lol.… the front of that bus tells me its from the early to mid 70s not the 80s.. the front grill and hood is that of a 70s light to mid duty truck or school bus.. I know those grills
Chevy and GMC kept the older front clip style on the bus chassis through the 1983 model year, despite the medium truck redesign in 1973. More info: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet/GMC_B_series The newer 1973+ style front clip was not adopted to the bus chassis until the 1984 model year.
You sir are living my dream. Thank you for rescuing all of these beauties.
Very cool! That bus brings back very fond memories. The shifting, the engines sounds and all that rattling lol . Thanks for sharing!

Yep, I agree.
Oh how I remember St. Cloud, Minnesota when I was a kid. I miss Minnesota so much.
I love the sound of those old Clark five speed transmissions. My favorite was when it was behind a Ford with a 330 gas engine.
wow mr Tommy , i loved your buses ,is very wonderfu collection.
I rode a 1982 Chevy Wayne school bus in school. That was replaced by a 1991 GMC Wayne. Love the sound of the old buses winding up the gears.
So do I. I wish that it could be brought back in some form.
The 1982 Chevy blue bird is my favorite school bus 😍

My favorite bus was a 1978 Thomas Built Bus with a chevy engine!!! Best looking bus around!!!! Rode one in 2nd grade!
I've been waiting to see this vid! Gorgeous bus! I believe 1982 was the last year of the mint green interior. I drove a 1983 BB and rode several, and they all had tan interiors.

Love the steel dashboard

@TommyRetro I have an idea what to do with all those school buses, you can turn them into coach buses for travelling
Will you make a video of the GMC Ward?
had you thought of getting a bus with a Superior body? they been defunct in the 1980s when its parant company Sheller Globe Corp stopped making them. before that they were known as Superior coach. they some were on International Loadstar, and the S series, the Ford B700 chassis and chevy. the type B minibus the Superior Pacemaker thats very hard to find now.
