Good stuff. I'm writing this in January 2020, so I'm concentrating on designing sub-250g planes at the moment. I use a little more balsa in my models, but this kind of project is BRILLIANT because it introduces people who may not have a traditional 'hands-on' aeromodelling background to the notion that you really can make great things all by yourself. An early success (which is guaranteed with this well-thought-out project) will inspire builders to experiment and modify things... Pretty soon you're hooked and wonder why more people don't build stuff for themselves. Here in the UK the CAA [US equivalent = FAA] is doing its best to kill our once free and wonderful hobby by regulating it to death, with fees and tests and threats and £1,000 fines for non-compliance and ludicrous drone horror stories. There's a lot of interest in designing RC planes that dip below the 250 gram registration radar, and that's my current obsession. If I were in the States I'd be protesting against the unjust 'taxation' by dumping something into Boston harbour! Thankfully, modern radio gear is so tiny that it's possible to have an unlimited amount of fun with planes that weigh no more than 8 ounces; videos like this are a great way to keep people motivated. And if the government decides that the 250g threshold is letting too many people get away with having fun for free and reduces the weight limit even further, well, we can just build lighter... Happy landings, guys! :-)
This an awesome glider! I ended up adding a motor for my son and daughter to learn to fly. It's easy to build and it can take a beating! My son learn to fly in three days (3 flights each day about 10 minutes each flight) and he loves it! We tried expensive planes but parts are expensive if u crash it. He has the confidence to fly and now he is ready for the next step. My son is 11 and daughter 8...both of them love this glider I may need to build a new one for each. Thank you Josh for this glider it's so awesome! I added mixing throttle and elevator so I didn't have to add to much down trust
Just built this, and all I can say is wow! Even with my heavy nimh battery this thing glides so good! It doesn't get windy enough here, but it still manages to catch a small breeze. Thank you!
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know a way to log back into an instagram account..? I stupidly forgot the password. I would love any help you can give me!
@Leandro Tristian thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out now. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Flitetest You guys should add in that the spars are part of the wing! I was looking around for about 20 minutes and thought my pack didn't come with spars hahaha. (Only because Bixler seems to just pull his out of the pack when they are attached to the wing)
When I first saw you build this plane, I wondered where you got your idea for the shape etc. It was not avail as a speed build yet and it kinda looked like my Gentle Lady. Well, in your glider challenge video you said you did use the Gentle Lady shape. I built the Lady back when the kit cost $14. I see now it can go as high as $75. I saw somewhere where there are ARF kits for the Lady. Oh well, I will enjoy building your kit and flying it as a motorized glider. My Lady is "retired" and it was a high start glider. Thanks Josh....keep up the great work!!!
I would suggest that the empennage be reinforced where the tail is attached. The thin cross section and the cuts for the control wire make this a week spot that will fail after prolonged use.
Guys.....rc truggy will winch up a glider better than a dog! Trust me ive tried it! Awesome vid. First build ive watched as im a gluder guy myself. Want to see more!!!
And sold, this will be my first Flite Test plane, I have some old HS-55 servos will these work in place of the 9 gram servos? Heck I think I even have an old 1/2AA 4 cell receiver pack kicking around to use, if not I have a couple 2-cell 500mAh.
The piece you take out from the top of the fuselage, would it damage anything if you glues that to the wing to help keep the wing aligned and not sliding around so much? It was my thought, i am building the Simple Soarer at the moment and that just popped to my mind? What do you guys think?
years later now... looks like a nice enough glider, it might benefit from peeling all inside paper from fuse and wing, using 4-5 gram servos, carbon pushrods with steel ends (thread and CA glue works!). I like pinching leading edges of tail/elevator (like
I know this is an older video and idk if you will see this comment but if you do, is it possible to Shrink the scale down to 1FT by 2FT or something close to that?
You guys do some fantastic stuff -this being amongst many of your designs as a fab low cost glider. I am looking at trying to make something affordable, quick and hopefully with a moderately high performance for F5J 😆 I laugh because I might be asking too much. Nonetheless possibly with some bamboo spars, and a more curved aerofoil with a tapered high aspect ratios wing
my CG changed dramatically with the power pod?! Is this going to be offset by the downward angle? I even moved the wing back and still needed over 3oz.....
Would love to see some elegant pull/pull control systems on the FT planes - building the SS at the moment and thought the control surface - servo distance makes this plane a good candidate! @FliteTest
Hey guys. After watching most of your videos, it seems like you are using the dx8 transmitter quite a bit. So i was wondering: What is the transmitter you use the most?
I've been looking for so long for a simple thermal glider. I used to fly them with my father as a kid, but I can't find plans for them anywhere. They all have motors on them. Can I replace the motor on this with the same amount of weight and just chuck it off a nice ridge face?
Yes it is possible. I just built this very design and I did it with a 2200 mAh 3s. All I did was change the nose. It is no longer a swap-able but it still fly's just fine. In fact I think the extra weight helps with the wind gusts we get in Colorado.
I’m about to order the simple soarer and wanted to add a power pack but I’m a little confused. As I read it showed items you may need and showed power pack A, then as I read further it listed power pack B as compatible. That’s where I’m confused, which is the correct power pack for the simple soarer and what would be the difference in those two power packs?
One tip: I'm a glider pilot (videos on my channel) and I have to say, that gliders do not fly so good without ailerons as with ailerons, because they have no motor. ;)
What about plans for David's monster? How about an overview of how it's built? I want to build the big one as a pure glider for slope, that's what i've been waiting for!
Plzzzzz I need to know what to use for power pod. Like do you need ESC for this plane or are all transmitters, servos, and motors compatible??? PLZ REPLY NEED HELP

@Brixton Desmond instablaster :)
@Leandro Tristian thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out now.
Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
@Leandro Tristian It did the trick and I finally got access to my account again. Im so happy:D
Thank you so much you saved my ass :D
@Brixton Desmond You are welcome :D
If you put the straight rubber bands on first, then the crossed ones, it will stop any possibility of the bands coming off.
it just arrived today! heading to the hobby shop on sat! can't wait to start making it...
Love this wing. I built it with no poly dihedral and have swapped it onto a maker trainer and a bush plane fuse i slapped together. Thanks guys.
vote for flitetest discus glider...... FTDLG

Please do more videos like this!!! I didn't even know you sold Kits!!! Awesome!!!!
@Flitetest You guys should add in that the spars are part of the wing! I was looking around for about 20 minutes and thought my pack didn't come with spars hahaha. (Only because Bixler seems to just pull his out of the pack when they are attached to the wing)
Thank you. I'm building mine from plans and just could not find the spars

Nice build as always Josh! A pusher version of the Soarer would be top notch for some simple fpv :-)
So have a mid-fuselage mounted rear facing prop like on the Bixler/FT Explorer?
I really liked my first one. Planning to build my 2nd one soon. Great design Josh!
The "dog" launch was the icing on the cake!!
Whoa, two videos in one day... before midnight... What is happening Flitetest?!
I like it.
Preciated balsa wood 🪵
I would suggest that the empennage be reinforced where the tail is attached. The thin cross section and the cuts for the control wire make this a week spot that will fail after prolonged use.
what was the weight of the glider without motor or any electronics?
The glider came out really nice! Can't wait to get one! The doggie tow was great!
Guys.....rc truggy will winch up a glider better than a dog! Trust me ive tried it! Awesome vid. First build ive watched as im a gluder guy myself. Want to see more!!!

Love the dog launcher! That is a first!
Awesome! That is so smooth, what a great design. I'm going to have to get one for the grandkids. Maybe two 😉
YESSS this week has felt eternal!
The piece you take out from the top of the fuselage, would it damage anything if you glues that to the wing to help keep the wing aligned and not sliding around so much?
It was my thought, i am building the Simple Soarer at the moment and that just popped to my mind? What do you guys think?
O hey iZilly, its me gonnagoprofb, haha thats weird. I switch hobbies and see you here randomly (origins- fingerboarding) Have a good day :D
Hey bro :) fun to see that we share more then one hobby :D Stay Awesome & Epic ;)
You should make an ft discus glider
casey kleeschulte yeah
Let David destroy it on maiden
It's a miracle that you've had so many healthy glue beads and none that had issues :D
I ❤ flitetest
good instructor, quite calming, reminds me of Bob Ross!
These glider videos are great. Thanks for doing them.
Ok so I am trying to make a Free Flight foam board Glider that I can either throw or high-start. Which of your guys' planes would work best? Thx!
the end of the tutorial was amazing tow a glider by a dog
just awesome liked
Great video!! what is the thickness of foamboard you use?
Can we scale down the size to make it more simple?
Great Vid!! Any South African looking for this Foam Board let me know.
Thanks once again!
Where is a video of one using the power pod?
you guys must love your job ;)
Nose heavy is better than tail heavy, I think I hear this in every Plane build video and I love it
Nice glider built, Simple and to the point . What's the flying weight and the wing area?
Great glider tow vehicle.
Good job Josh
Awesome video! Looks like a speed build kit is in my future!
do u ship across sea's?????????
Hi. I am new of RC planes. I'd like to understand: can it roll since it is 2 CH only?
years later now... looks like a nice enough glider, it might benefit from peeling all inside paper from fuse and wing, using 4-5 gram servos, carbon pushrods with steel ends (thread and CA glue works!). I like pinching leading edges of tail/elevator (like
Hey FT,
Could you guys do another multirotor video I really like them. But if you don't want to you don't have to its just a suggestion
I know this is an older video and idk if you will see this comment but if you do, is it possible to Shrink the scale down to 1FT by 2FT or something close to that?
Thank you so much. It was my first sucessfull rc plane that has flown.
Is it possible to build the wing with ailerons?
Dutch RC Planes South Limburg ya
Sure, the 3.7gr servos would fit in the wing.. Or a 5gr , but if it sticks out a bit, itd not bad... Just tape it so no air can go into the wing
What is that cool golden era racer plane with wheel pants behind Josh? It looks awesome!!!
Love the dog launch...Nice alternative to a high start!
32:38 "a plane that is nose heavy flies poorly, a plane that is tail heavy flies once" - RcLifeOn
Have you tried a lightweight bungee launch?
Would the control surfaces be fine if i downscaled this 30%
This is awesome ! I wish you guys would sell a WHOLE kit with motors servos ect, Thanks.
Same I agree with you
they are bringing that out soon
Patrick hughes-games Should be good when they bring it out :)
You guys do some fantastic stuff -this being amongst many of your designs as a fab low cost glider.

We need more slope on flitetest!
Will this still work if I don't make control surfaces ?
Do these things last? Seems like they would only last one season.
my CG changed dramatically with the power pod?! Is this going to be offset by the downward angle? I even moved the wing back and still needed over 3oz.....
Hey Josh with all the free plans you have on your website can you put up the auto cad files or whatever files you used to laser cut it?
Can you use this plane for slope flying
Would love to see some elegant pull/pull control systems on the FT planes - building the SS at the moment and thought the control surface - servo distance makes this plane a good candidate! @FliteTest
Great build + nice model, well done guys!
Does the towing bracket come with the kit
love the glider dog!
Cool design. Let's see a ducted fan motor pod, and models to match. A couple of straight wing, & delta wing jets.
Nice Labrdoodle launch!!
I think this was the most understandable tutorial video😆
So wait...where do you get the parts for the power pod (not including electronics)? Are they included in some of the kits?
Hey guys. After watching most of your videos, it seems like you are using the dx8 transmitter quite a bit. So i was wondering: What is the transmitter you use the most?
YES!! It's up! today's project!! Build this thing and get it in the air :D
Can you use a high-start or bungee launcher to get this off the ground?
Great, detailed instructions Josh! I'm going to give it a try thanks to you. Keep em coming!
Have you ever had trouble with the paper ripping when you fold it over for the wing?

Oh, this comes with a glider nose. Neat.
Any particular brand for a cordless hot glue gun like the one Josh uses here? What wattage? Thanks!
Can you show a picture of the Power pod and wing attached? Rubber bands and all? Please?
Hi,
I was building this planning on flying on 1300 mAh batteries. Is this possible? If not, can I run it on 2S 800?
Yes it is possible. I just built this very design and I did it with a 2200 mAh 3s. All I did was change the nose. It is no longer a swap-able but it still fly's just fine. In fact I think the extra weight helps with the wind gusts we get in Colorado.

design a dlg glider
could you make this a simple park toss glider just to toss back and forth with kids?
Watch the FT Sparrow build video. The kids can even help you build it.
Can I use this glider without electronics?
Hello, could you guys build a plane like this with a pusher prop, better for beginners.
Can I used balsam wood as the replacement for the paper
One tip:
I'm a glider pilot (videos on my channel) and I have to say, that gliders do not fly so good without ailerons as with ailerons, because they have no motor. ;)
There's Alula sitting on a box behind a glue gun docking station.
Is that the original from a review video, or is it one of the swapables?
Hello! congratulation for the construction epelo Video.
What material is this?
coroplast?
How did you get that thing to glide with a camera boom out front? No wonder it crashed.
Faiz Azizi, Dollar Tree foam board is what they use and it builds beautiful planes and is very easy to work with.
With this can you use power pack A? Because power pack B is a bit too expensive for me.
hi
hello. ',:|
Hey flitetest!
Keep doing your videos. their the best and most informative out there
Okay, what type of the glue gun are you using?
What about plans for David's monster? How about an overview of how it's built? I want to build the big one as a pure glider for slope, that's what i've been waiting for!
The kit sent to Australia how much??
I did enjoy your build video, and then the end with the dog, how cool. Thanks! Jimmy, WX9DX
awesome vid! You're a great builder. Nice job. Great doggie!
it would be great if the powerplant nose had a folding prop, what modifications can we do to adjust it?
How about a Discuss Launch glider? I think that'd be geat
Is the Dog Launcher extra cost??
Plzzzzz I need to know what to use for power pod. Like do you need ESC for this plane or are all transmitters, servos, and motors compatible??? PLZ REPLY NEED HELP
How to calculate the area of horizontal stabilizer relative to main wing?
What material is used here depron or which one ?
