  • Debuting on the channel are the Coasters. Although not our typical vocal group harmony act, they took their performance up to a semi-comedic level, and had great national success. "Yakety Yak" was their biggest hit reaching national #1 in 1958. The Coasters were formed in the mid-50s from two original members of L.A.’s Robins (west-"coasters,” Carl Gardner and Bobby Nunn). Their association with songwriters, Leiber and Stoller, produced multiple big hits. Members changed throughout their history, and I am not familiar enough with them to identify the singers in this video (except for Speedo). But, in the 70s, “most of the time” they consisted of 4 of the following: Earl Carroll (former lead of the Cadillacs), Carl Gardner, Billy Guy, Ronnie Bright (bass?), or Alvin Morse.
