- Join Clark in the shop today as he builds a new 100Ah LiFePO4 battery pack in a waterproof box. This would be a great way to make your own lithium battery for an electric outboard motor. Clark will explain the process, and even include a couple of close-calls along the way.

Well Clark you didn't let enough smoke out to trash the BMS. We all get lucky once in a while. I think anyone that works with electricity and batteries does that now and again. Heck a couple of months ago I hooked the new batteries in my motorhome up backwards, I know better but it happened. Fortunately I just blew a 50 amp fuse and nothing else. Keep the good stuff coming.

@@EmilyAndClark I know the feeling. I tried hard to insulate all my tools and be careful when building my 16s bank for our bus conversion and still make some accidental sparks putting it together.
48v sparks. Bet that was interesting.
@@EmilyAndClark luckily they were lower voltage, lightly bumped a nearby terminal between prismatic cells on the top of the bank.
Nice to see this. I did something similar for a kayak and electric trolling motor. Also added a solar charger (Victron) to keep the batteries charged on longer trips.

I built one of these last year from some very old Sinopoly 100ah cells. I used a trolling motor waterproof plug set. It can handle 50A which is plenty for a 38lb thrust 12v trolling motor.
I even got a chance to test the waterproofness when passing the battery from the dinghy to the boat.
I haven't run "the test" myself. Thanks for your report.
JKBms has a build in active balancer and many more features. My favorite BMS so far.

Hey Clark ! Awesome n ew Li Time new battery to check out that I spotted tested on the Hobotech channel. Seems Li Time have a new range of BMS of their own, making one heck of a difference such as to the 460ah tested by Will Prowse, problem, the 460 ah isdamned heavy, where the 230 ah is very manageable. The Hobotech guy didn’t do a tear down, but with the power that thing iscapable of hand,ing, frankly a tear down looks to be a waste of time imo. Though Will Prowse does tear down the 460 ah if I remember correctly. Personally, I’ll treat these gamechanger batteries much more gently, harge at 0.15 C and discharge them much more gently as well, and the service life may be up there with what I expect from a battery. I’m thinking of getting a bank of three tbh for long term testing. Watch the Hobotech review, and I think you’ll see what I’m getting at. Best Wishes. Bob in Wales. 🙂PS. Would like a chat sometime about the design of a zone system for boat electricals, so each cabin is a zone powered by the small very efficient Victron Phoenix smart inverters that have very low standby power, such as the 385av and 500 av,powering a mains socket and USB, the Salon as a zone, Galley as a Zone, with say 1200 av inverters, and even the Cockpit as a zone, soeach zone is straightforward and logical and safe for amateurs to tackle, With all connecting safely to up to standard Off. essel and on Vessel power supply sources. Great information! Is there any risk of overheating the bms by attaching it to the heat pad? Thank you
Direct heat... Not really, remember it's going to turn off the heater once everything gets just a touch above freezing.
Circuit heat... Unlikely as it's only passing 3 amps or so. The engineer who designed this built a board that can pass 100a continuously so I trust he made this circuit up to the task and he has a HUGE heat sink available.
Also, any heat generated is an advantage when things are cold.

Not exactly I built that before we did electrical videos.
It is talked about in an adventure log filmed at the same time period that Emily made her dinghy videos.
It has red cells then but I damaged them by overcharge so I had to replace the cells
some of those HF cases don´t use Stainless pins on the hinges. Check and replace if needed.

Just a note to get you to check the screw terminals on the BMS. It looked like the heavy wires that you tightened with the screwdriver, had the terminals touching the heat sink, effectively bypassing the BMS's ability to turn off power for charging or discharging. You should be able to check this by using the app to turn off charging or discharging power, then checking for power at the external terminals you made with the bolts.
I hope this test proves me wrong but I'm worried about the shorted connection.

Repeat after me - Ooops! It happens and be grateful it wasn't 440 three phase or 400/800 volt DC.
On crimps I'm also very disappointed at how flimsy some are. I prefer to use uninsulated crimps so I can pin crimp and solder them sealing them with marine grade shrink tubing. I'm old fashion and still carry a CS-34
On metal rings, watchbands, etc some would be amazed at the gruesome scar a metal watchband can leave on your wrist even after momentary contact with a 1,000 amp CCA starting battery. The heat momentarily generated in a short can approach what many home ranges generate with all the pot burners turned on at the same time. A ring that fuses in a 12 volt battery short can loose you a finger.

the 2 wires is to turn on the BMS, you can't turn it off with that.. I don't know the exact app you're using but normally you should be able to shut down the BMS within the app
The switch for the bms is typically defaulted off from the factory and can be activated in the app!

I am especially interested in your higher level DIY content regarding electronics. The wind turbine was very interesting. I want more on that if you can. Making your own batteries. I'd like to see you play around with the DIY raspberry pi navigation systems etc.
I mean, I can solve any problem just by going to the yard and agreeing to pay whatever to get the thing. But I'd like to be more independent than that.
I recommend you do a wind generator if it interests you.
Other projects are more "complicated" but for sheer satisfaction you can't beat something you built from materials that makes the power you use.
Solar is probably better but you bought the components (, most likely) and just assembled them. That wind power feels different as you actually manufactured the generator.
@@EmilyAndClark Detailed instructions and schematics would be well worth purchasing if you ever created it. I've looked around and things get "vague" in bits. You could probably also sell a DIY kit for wind turbines.

Take a look through our playlists. There is one on building a wind generator.
I build my own from the ground up. Scrap steel in a lath -> axial field alternator.
No video but I built a custom axial field alternator that mounts on the prop shaft and makes power with the ships propeller while sailing.
No worries of weed in the towed prop. Best system.

Those came out of a battery I was asked to review. The cells were very good but the BMS was so bad I didn't do the review.
Obtaining cells is dicey. Lots of companies in China are selling bad cells over Alibaba. I'd stick to companies with US stock and some chance of a return policy. It likely means they are selling cells that passed inspection.

Oh.. you mean thermal insolation. I didn't catch that. I thought you meant electrical insolation.
I'd likely store it in an insulated place so when it makes unwanted heat it can still cool.
Going way north. You could embrace the portability (and lazy) esthetic and just wrap it in a blanket.

nothing special, build first the cels than build the battery that is home made,
And you never compare the costs to build or to buy. Not worth the time.
