The most aggressive car mods? more like the most depressive car mods! Who needs intimidating Mods when you can intimidate yourself! Remember when Toyota Supra's, Corvettes, Ford Mustangs, Nissan Skyline's, and Mazda Rx-7's all had Shift Levers? Hell, even a Chrysler Minivan had a shift lever? Now C8 Corvettes use this stupid Shifter Button setup and many more cars use the Dial Knob crap. I'm not trying to adjust my radio, I'm trying to shift gears for Heaven's sake! - Авто/Мото

I’m just tired of car companies “fixing” things that are clearly not broken. Not once have I heard anyone complain about having to use a lever to change gears.
If the dial is cheaper to manufacture than the lever is, then guess what?
Same reason we see so many 100% digital gauge clusters. They market it as a premium feature but it's really just that screens have become such a commodity item it's cheaper and takes up less space to use a screen for a gauge cluster than to include any mechanical or at least electromechanical gauges.

This is why I will never own any new vehicle. With all the screens and things they are adding to cars. Plus more normal features are being moved to said screens as well. I understand wanting to make things better, but putting everything behind a screen is going to lead to more eyes off the road just to adjust things like the AC
Putting things into the screen means handing over control to software. Making it easier for vendors to wall it behind subscription fee.
@@rompis.aAgreed. It's all by design. Modern cars are just permissioned rolling prisons. It's the reason for stupid things like door actuators with no manual override. All new cars are cancer IMO

Sad?! It makes me terrified. One argument with a psychotic chick and there goes your transmission or your life.
Most of them luckily have some protection for that, they wont actually put you in reverse when you're not at a near standstill
Another BIG problem with the lack of a physical shift knob from my experience is that there is no emergency override when the battery dies. When my uncle’s 2018 Honda Odyssey’s battery died one night, we couldn’t get it into neutral because it lacked an override switch that’s normally next to the shifter on a traditional automatic. Even when the tow truck came, it had issues getting it out of the parking space because it was FWD and the transmission was stuck in park! It had to be dragged out which probably didn’t do wonders for the transmission. We also had a small jump pack, but it wasn’t enough to get it started unfortunately.
We can't even trust Honda anymore... Or Toyota. RIP OG Tundra.
Ford still has the neutral override.
What reputable tow truck driver doesn’t have a battery charger that they could put on it for 2 seconds to get it into neutral? Honda did do bad here but pretty much every other brand with a dial still has an override.
Tow Truck driver needs to learn some things about his job. *Most* cars have a neutral override and I can tell you where most of them are
As for the new button shifter Odyssey, that one I admit I don't know. Haven't had to pop one yet
@@towcat I don’t remember all the details honestly. The Odyssey has buttons instead of a lever or rotating knob and there are no visible overrides except for on the transmission itself and you need a special tool to do it. Otherwise, it can’t go into neutral without starting the engine. As for why the tow truck couldn’t jump the car, it was parked inwards in a very packed parking lot. It was also a very cold Winter night that day though, so that could have had an effect on the battery too.
A big factor that influenced me on what car I purchased when finally getting a new vehicle was the presence of a shift knob compared to the dial.
Yes, I went with the stick.
The Honkai Impact music bumping in the background:
bladedangel wants to touch and grab big and long knobs.
A lot of chicks are about the big long knobs. J/S
We no longer mechanically shift gears so car companies are like "buttons and dials work"
I can only image the nightmare of fixing that electronic switch when it breaks within 5 years after purchase like they want it to.
The owner will have sold the car off by then. That's the point. Perpetual debt.
Warranties are a scam.
ive seen "shifters" that are just buttons on the dash. like one for park, one for drive, and one for reverse.
Equally as dangerous and still a travesty
Remember anytime a Dodge Ram driver gives you a hard time, or tailgates you with 3 empty lanes, they have a shift knob, usually shuts them up.

@@christopherlowery855 cant you just... not use that feature then? its not like the dial shifter where you have no choice
@@vladimirtiffany In both cases, my answer has been to just not buy cars with these features, among other intolerable needless automobile design changes. Literally can't happen.
I'm lucky to live in France, where everyone has a wiggly stick in their cars
Another one is the lack of manual parking brakes and makers using a button.
I tried the button in a 2023 ford transit while driving and it applied the brakes as long as I held it so at least it still works as an emergency brake on some vehicles.
The lever behind the wheel to shift the car in the caravans and town and countries were actually really fun to use and felt really smooth

Pacifica owner here:
I like my dial. The Chrysler dial feels and looks nice and it has yet to fail me after 100k miles. It had an error once but still turned and changed gears fine.
For most consumers, a dial is all you need. There's no real reason to have anything more than that in a modern automatic.
Now, for those uninformed: the first knob with the center S button is a Ford knob and it sucks. It's loose and feels cheap and wobbles and bleh. Also fingerprint magnet. The one with the silvery texture and the no smoking sign is a Pacifica. Very solid, feels good. That knob was also used in the 200 and the base for it in the Ram 1500, although with a different cap. The Ram's knob feels awful. The last flush knob is a Ford product and is used in Landrovers and Jaguars and it also sucks.
A knob can be okay but it has to be built right.
And, realistically, how much do you touch the shifter in an automatic car? You don't at all, so why do some of these automatics need massive levers?

I like the Mercedes solution, which is a stalk on the steering column.
It's the best compromise - it's entirely just a cheap switch - which is why manufacturers are doing the dial - and it's easy to locate because it's similar to an old column shifter.

First time I saw this was on a bus 15-18 years ago. It was a freightliner model with a small electronic gear box with buttons on it. All they did was change it to a wheel lol. But, I guess it makes it feel “high tech”
Škoda (european) had the manual lever looking auto for years, but with the latest facelift, they made a lever like a blinker, which we had in our last car. That is somewhat okay but i still love to see a lever sticking out, it gives more a vibe than a button you need to turn

Not to mention the amount of people I know personally who were left stranded by a bad wire connection
I've always driven fairly simple cars with a clutch pedal, manual shift, parking brake lever etc. A few years ago I had to rent a car. After fumbling around trying to find the hand brake, I had to walk back to their office and admit with some embarassment that I couldn't drive off cos I couldn't find how to release the hand brake..lol. It was some button or tiny switch tucked in somewhere!
It feels so cool passing 1 to 2 on an automatic transmission with the lever, now we get a door knob and plastic paddle shifter😢
My guess is that making these round knobs cost less than an actual shifter, similarly to how companies shove a bunch of touchscreen panels instead of dedicated switches and knobs.
Yes and no. Any change costs money. Manuals are historically cheaper to make than autos. Cars would still be dirt cheap if they were still made the same way they were in the 90s. 10 control modules easily offsets the cost of an aluminum intake. All the stupid useless tech made the cars so expensive. A $1 cable is way cheaper than a $40 servo. The point was to cut the mechanical linkage completely. It's been a slow boil.

(Although the E46 is a much better BMW example than many others. Especially in recent years)

Manufacturers can't even manage to build quality electrical window switches. Now we want to replace the part that makes the vehicle go, stop, and reverse with the same worthless garbage? Pass... Hard pass.
Some of us have the ability to look at a vehicle beyond the end of the extended warranty period.
Specifically, dial shifters aren't that bad for new cars. When it breaks is when we have an issue.
