hey Kevr, I have not had any issues so far over 2 years. I love the machine. Just make sure you use good water and keep it clean inside and out. have you seen my descaling and backflushing videos?
I haven’t seen those, will check them out. I asked because some have complained about reliability after a year or two. Sounds like the parts are available if your handy. I have a gagia brera fully automatic, looking to step it up a notch for quality. I have other breville products and love them. Thx!
Whoa, just noticed you roast your own. Been wanting to do that for years. Tried the popcorn popper method, was ok. Do you have videos about what beans you use and roast profiles?
Kevr unfortunately I did have issues with my previous one in less than a year after I bought it some heat coil problems after decalcifying process but their customer service did and amazing work and actually I happens twice the last one after the warranty being expired and guess what? they sent me a brand new machine so because they ask you to sent just the main part of the machine and keep each detachable part, now I have spare water tank and other parts from the previous one; they never asked to ship them back to them. Like I said they are fantastic and definitely highly recommended. So relax and have fun with your breville and enjoy your coffee.
Brilliant! u raised the bar when you impressed me on how to correct minor fuckups...the choc powder...then the choc syrup and i was like omg lol then u went n got the bbq skewer n did the lines and i literally fell off my sofa. Boom!
Great video!! Mine should be here today. Can you tell me what water you use? We have a water jug stand and we use Mountain Valley Spring Water but I notice Calcium build-up when boiling. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Hi Bryan, usually i use RO water which is about 50PPM or I use alkaline water and just keep it clean via descaling. You can also try Third Wave Water with distilled water. Here is my video on it. ruclips.net/video/qT1T5CLulZ8/видео.html
Maybe a silly question- After I make a double-cup espresso to use in an americano, does it hurt the machine to run the double-cup button a second time? A third time? I know I should really refill the 'portafilter' cup with new grinds, but if it doesn't hurt the machine, why not get a little more from the same coffee grinds? I'm gonna add hot water anyway... Thanks.
Heat your machine up longer (like 30 min) with empty portafilter (and its basket) in place. It is temperature stability you want as consistent as possible to get your best shots possible.
James, my man! Yes, brother Coffee Bean Roaster..... I was sewing your Barista Express video,,, just got one. Alway, I roast my beans with a Air Fluid Bed Roaster, what do you use? I have about 300 pounds of green beans in my temp controlled storage container. Just though I would see what you do, machine Beans, etc., Any how, hit me when you get a chance on some details. Later Bill
Hey Bill! I roast out of my Behmor 1600+. I am making a video now on how and where i buy coffee. I buy about 20-30lbs at a time which last me almost a year.
If you have shower screen marks on your puck your overdosing . I am pretty sure you got 18 grams in that basket which is probably meant for not more than 14grams . I don’t know I like my porta filter to be hot to touch before I pull shots .
took me 2 weeks to learn how to latte art, its very easy and thats around 23 cups of practice. Just make sure when your steaming, the surface of the milk should just be touching the tip, dont let it go past the line.
gemini65ish one is a double filter for coffee that is not very good and fresh and one is a regular filter for fresh coffee that is extracted normally. Dual wall just creates artificial back pressure in the basket. It’s like training wheels if you are newer and don’t know how to tamp etc.
Great followup to your review of the Barista Express! Very professional and to the point; I'm not much into learning about the reviewers 3rd cousin, etc.!
Hello, i have Breville BES870XL Barista Express and i have problem with EXTRACTION im using fresh beans and im using the single filter basket and using 6 grind size and 10g for grind dose for single basket with tamp to line but when i do the extraction it start with begain of the espresso range and stops for 1 sec and goes at the end of the espresso range, how to make it like normal extraction that be in the middle of the extraction range ? Thanks.
If you're a beginner, try starting with the double filter, it makes a somewhat finnicky process slightly less tricky. Some experienced baristas have even told me they find single shot filters to be too annoying. With the double filter, try dosing between 16-18 grams, I generally start with 16 then increase if needed. Finally, although your pressure gauge is clearly indicating fault in what you're doing, I find the easiest way to get your first shots right is by timing them. They should take between 25-35 seconds. Use the gauge as a second point of reference. Good luck.
What settings did you use? Pre-infusion time and water temperature? Instead of timing it, do you ever weigh your ground coffee vs. liquid coffee output? Ratio 1:2?
Antonio Avila I just use the standard sizes on the one and two cup buttons which are 1 and 2 oz. I also use 20 grams in the basket. Unless I want a different flavor... then it is usually 1:1 ratio.
I just want to say that this is one of the best made videos I've ever seen. The way you speak is extremely natural and easy to understand, not over scripted or fake. No ridiculous 30 second intro, the first tip was 5 seconds into the video - just perfect. The mixing was done well, there was a bit of music but you're still easy to hear over it. Number one was how you gave a full rundown on how you use the machine without cutting around. So I really appreciate all of that, good video
Great video! Just got myself this machine and I noticed you said extraction takes about 20 seconds - in the instructions it says 25-35? But have you found it's always less? What about the single shot is that about the same? As only ever seem to have about 20 seconds extraction time
I usually get about 30 seconds now. I am roasting my own beans so it is much better now. the single or double should extract around the same time. I only use the double basket now. Thank you for watching Peter.
Weigh your beans, you're not getting enough pressure. Single dosing will give you consistency aswell as it keeps your beans fresh because you're not leaving the beans in the hopper. It'll help you dial in your beans aswell as your shot doesn't look dialed in the video, too little pressure aswell as the shot is running too fast, (10 sec pre infusion plus 25-35 sec is what you should be going for)
@@AM2PMReviews ahh no, I'll check them out for sure. Just started my barista journey early this year, been at home ever since and have been learning and delivering results like a sponge. Was just trying to help a fellow greenie out but I'm excited to see your progress!
yes I am using a non-pressurized basket. AKA: Single Wall basket. It is what a traditntal machine uses and it relies on the freshness of the beans to create back pressure instead of a double wall/pressurized basket which artificially creates the back pressure. The double wall is great for stale beans though!
@@AM2PMReviews i ordered my first order of blue bottle coffee beans so hope this makes a diff. I have a delonghi machine and well I'm having trouble with getting a good shot so hopefully the beans make it better
Kim Granger yeah that should help! I would recommend any company that roasts and then immediately ships beans. If you find a local toaster that is good too. I just roast my own now.
Great tips thank you! We just purchased this machine yesterday but struggling to find the "right" grind setting for a strong coffee.. any tips? Thanks again!
Thank you so much! Yeah it's just been a bit of trial and error to get it to sit in the "espresso" range but we figured out it's our tamping skills lol.. yes definitely have fresh beans we got some from our fav local cafe/coffee store.. thanks again for your help!! :)
1337Sauce thank you so much 😊 I think we've finally found a good setting for our beans and have also found out that we need to lower it as the beans become slightly less fresh (although we go through the bag fairly quickly haha) I also didn't realise at the very start how important the tamping is but we've had time to play around now and really loving the machine! Thanks again for your advice 😊
I want this exact machine! Thanks for showing how to use it! I also like your setup and the fact that you keep water there even(I do the same thing)I am actually in the process of creating a coffee bar in my home office so I am hoping to be able to get this Breville soon
I almost do the exactly same thing as you do. so I kinda totally understand how valuable these tips are to making coffee and keeping the machine in good shape. thank you!
Hi James - very helpful. I have a new 870XL and am a newbie at this. I'm having trouble getting one ounce out of the single shot settings. I have tried a range of grind settings from 2 to 6. I'm in the right pressure range, have been careful about the quantity in the basket but relying on the razor to judge that. I'm using the regular single wall baskets. I've tried a few different tamp pressures but am new to this so not sure what is wrong and I always come up "consistently" with only a half once. Extraction is taking about 20 seconds with 10 of that being before the flow starts. I read 25 to 35 seconds is normal but perhaps that is the time for a double shot. any advice? Beans came with the machine from a reputable internet coffee retailer in Seattle and are dated 12/14/2017 - could old beans be part of the problem? Any suggestions welcome.
I am experiencing the exact same issues as Ray except the beans are fresh. I get 1/2 an ounce with single and 1 to 1/2 ounces with the double shot. Just having trouble finding the right settings to get the full amount of espresso. What grind settings are you using?
Having the exact same issue. Make sure you program your machine to run the proper length of time. It’s in the manual. That said I’m still trying to dial this thing in.
Thing I'd change so far? I'd say NOT to put distilled water in the tank. Use mineral water. You can research a more in-depth explanation online. All this grinding, tamping repeatedly? Just work out a preset grind setting that works, typically closest to 18 grams or so, and use razor tool to trim the excess.
yeah this is not what I typically do but mostly for demo. I was using some distilled water with my tap water because it is very chlorinated and hard. Now I use Third Wave Water. Check out the newest video.
Do you recommend heating the grounds container, freezing the milk container? I can not seem to get the milk like paint, always a little thin. I tilt the milk container and get the swirl. Maybe the wand is to deep or to thin. Suggestions.
A great way to train and this is how I was taught at catering school get your milk pitcher add cold water and a small dash of dish soap and steam the water and dish soap you can achieve the wet paint consistency and home in your milk texturing skills this way much cheaper and saves a lot on wasted milk 😉
Wow thank you so much for this video! I've just bought my machine and don't really have the creativity as to how to maximise the use! Please share more stuff about how you use your machine, the maintenance, troubleshooting and everything! Love this video!
Wow. I'm impressed! I got mine last week and I'm having problems with the pressure, so instead I hold the button longer and drink foamy brewed coffee instead lol Now, from browsing forums and watching videos like yours (the most entertaining and helpful so far), I realize what I did wrong. I only wonder what your grind setting was and if the dose is at 11'oClock.
currently I have the grinder on 4 and the temp on standard. the amount of extraction is standard too. so really its more about fresh coffee than custom settings.
idea: your airtight container is airtight, but also has a lot of air in it. Might be better off using a zip lock or just rolling up a bag of beans to reduce air IN the container. Thanks for the vid.
few things: 1) how does it not bother everyone that the grinds are spilling everywhere?!? The guy just brushes off the grinds right and left with a painter's brush to "clean"??? how the fck is that "cleaning" - that's about the same as sweeping junk out of your kitchen and into a hallway or something and calling it "cleaning"... wow. Next - that fckn disgusting looking rag - um, THAT looks better than a few scratches on the stainless steel? everything about that nasty rag "cleaning" (before and after) looks filthy, smelly, and plain gross, lol. That thing should be changed after every coffee making exercise. That said, actual coffee cups look nice, but to call the process "tips, tricks, and art" is insane.
Great Video James. I've got mine but I have an issue. I can't reach at least 20 seconds of extraction process. I just get 15 seconds for one cup option. Any recommendation? thaks in advance.
I always use the double shot portafilter the single doesn't work will in my opinion. I use only fresh beans now and even roast my own which has helped a lot. I would recommend getting fresh beans and seeing how that work and then working on the grind size.
Thanks for the useful tips. Good advice to keep the coffee machine clean. Its a great looking unit. One thing I have to mention however - leaving the towel and all the crap on top of the machine makes it look super UGLY!
I would spray some steam out again after you're done with the milk. The milk residue can get back into the machine and smell terrible. Quick question, my portafilter basket always pops out when i knock out the grinds, do you know how I can make sure it stays in the portafilter? Im close to buying a bottomless one.
i will upgrading from Brevile bdc650 to barista express in a week. It may sound silly but what do you think about coffee staining your teeth? I dont think people brush right after
GREAT UPGRADE! coffee stains teeth no matter what because teeth are porous. I don't think it matters too much. you have two choices as I see it...1) whiten your teeth. 2) or be cautious of the coffee touching your teeth as you drink.
If I could make a suggestion....I wouldn't recommend heating the milk before pulling the shot. As heating the milk uses a LOT higher temp and if you don't bleed the excess heat off by running some water through the brew head, you will burn your coffee and it will be really bitter. I note that you did purge the super heated water to warm your cups up, but some watching your video might not pick up on that bit. Personally I find it easier to warm the cups up first, grind, tamp and pull the shot into the warm cups (no delay after grinding), then do the milk last. But, hey man, good video overall. I have an earlier version of this machine and it has delivered non-stop superb coffees for must be at least 3 years.
Dave Jefferson I like that version too but I found that milk takes about 1 minute and my espresso starts to die fast and get cold. So either way is great! It's faster to get the steam heating temp then go down to brew temps then the other way around.
On most machines that would be spot on, but not this one! the Machine auto purges in the back of the drip tray when the steam wand is placed back to standby, if you notice around 4:11, you can see the steam coming out of the drip tray.
Just got my machine, problem is there is no much espresso coming out especially single shot. I tried different sizes , just lots of water coming out at the bottom of the machine.
Hi, is there any way to keep my beans from going stale? what I mean is, is there a way to extract all beans from under the hopper, so I can keep them in an airtight container? Thank you
I is usually all the way to then smallest timer amount and I just dose manually. I think the amount of coffee it grinds is crazy for the 20grams needed. so I just hold the button down. I also am currently at grind size 4 with my own freshly roasted beans. Thanks for watching Joe!
Great video im looking to buy a new coffee machine came across this one which is called the sage in the uk how long have you had your one for and do you recommend it thank you Paul
yes they are branded differently in Europe. I have had it now for almost two years and love it. It take time to dial it in but for the money, you can't go wrong!
Yes, in a way. To get the best flavored Americano, fill your cup with the hot water from the machine, then extract the espresso shot(s) atop the water. The crema will float the cup better than if you do it the opposite way.
You are very welcome James. Yesterday, we ordered the stainless steel classic version of the Breville BES870XL. I watched many videos and two of them were yours. I'm subscribing to your channel, please feel free to subscribe to mine ;)😉
I set my doser to single shot, tamp lightly then add a second dose. I find this gives exactly the right amount of coffee and it doesn't overflow the basket
Adrian Scarlett that’s what i do now! It’s great to not waste any coffee. I use the back of the scoop for a slight tamp. Then with the second dose a full tamp.
Hey Man, I have the same machine, it's only about a week old. When I first got it it was running killer shots and now no matter what I do the shots smell and taste burnt. Any thoughts?
I appreciate you getting back to me. It ended up being the machine. I'm not sure what was wrong with it, but I brought it back and got a new one. I'm all set again. The new one is working great so far.
Hey mate, got the same coffee machine and really been having trouble with getting it in the Nespresso range. It’s starts off in the range but then becomes overpressure. We have tried fine tuning with amount and size of grind. Any tips on how to get it into the pressure range? Also what number of course are you running for those beans?
Hi I just bought this machine today I had The breville basic one and the coffee wouldn't come thro I was buying the Starbucks espresso and I had them grind it now that I have a grinder I can do my own but I am confused as to wich filter to use the dual or single I still have a full bag grinded from Starbucks which should I use? Also do I have to pay attention to the pressure gage at all? Great video with a lot of great tips thanks for posting
joni strand for pre-ground coffee I recommend the dual walled filter as it keeps the pressure regulated no matter the freshness of the coffee. In that case, the pressure gauge doesn't matter because the dual walled basket will almost be the same no matter what. I have plenty more videos on the machine. Thanks for watching

1. Use fresh coffee beans, and if you are....
2. lower the grind setting by one.

Nice machine! I just bought a new one and am waiting for it to ship. I'm looking forward to it. Great video! Thank you for sharing!
yes i have had it for 2 years and love it!
What type of milk did you use?
currently it is either 2% or whole.
U are a legend
I have an update coming very soon which makes this look like child's play! I can' wait to show you ASA!
Nice!! What do you set your grind at?
Paul Doyle it’s between 4-8
Do you recommend heating the grounds container, freezing the milk container? I can not seem to get the milk like paint, always a little thin. I tilt the milk container and get the swirl. Maybe the wand is to deep or to thin. Suggestions.
yes you probably need to aerate more. The wand will add water to your milk overtime so you might need to simply aerate more.
A great way to train and this is how I was taught at catering school get your milk pitcher add cold water and a small dash of dish soap and steam the water and dish soap you can achieve the wet paint consistency and home in your milk texturing skills this way much cheaper and saves a lot on wasted milk 😉
Good tips ! Great video ! Thank you !
Lise Desjardins thank you Lise
Enjoyed it, learned from it … big thanks 🙏🏻
no problem man! I will make more videos on it too!
If you got mess on your latte, cover with Coco powder. That's one of the most inspiring lines on RUclips.
HAHA yeah just cover it up! 😎
Wow thank you so much for this video! I've just bought my machine and don't really have the creativity as to how to maximise the use! Please share more stuff about how you use your machine, the maintenance, troubleshooting and everything! Love this video!
Wow. I'm impressed! I got mine last week and I'm having problems with the pressure, so instead I hold the button longer and drink foamy brewed coffee instead lol
Now, from browsing forums and watching videos like yours (the most entertaining and helpful so far), I realize what I did wrong. I only wonder what your grind setting was and if the dose is at 11'oClock.
Good video.. i just got the same machine this week, what is your current grind setting?
currently I have the grinder on 4 and the temp on standard. the amount of extraction is standard too. so really its more about fresh coffee than custom settings.
Honest Cigar Reviews Much appreciated, i got the shot bang in the middle of expresso range today, so happy with the result.
what is the grind setting you have?
I liked your video
Thank you Shane. Have you seen my newest video with the top 10 tips on this machine?
idea: your airtight container is airtight, but also has a lot of air in it. Might be better off using a zip lock or just rolling up a bag of beans to reduce air IN the container.
Thanks for the vid.
yes I use a zip lock most of the time now.
few things: 1) how does it not bother everyone that the grinds are spilling everywhere?!? The guy just brushes off the grinds right and left with a painter's brush to "clean"??? how the fck is that "cleaning" - that's about the same as sweeping junk out of your kitchen and into a hallway or something and calling it "cleaning"... wow. Next - that fckn disgusting looking rag - um, THAT looks better than a few scratches on the stainless steel? everything about that nasty rag "cleaning" (before and after) looks filthy, smelly, and plain gross, lol. That thing should be changed after every coffee making exercise. That said, actual coffee cups look nice, but to call the process "tips, tricks, and art" is insane.
it was a great cup of coffee 🤣
Awesome video 👏
thank you John! I will do an updated version.
What's the chocolate syrup?
Phill Ashley just standard cheap syrup. You should get more fancy syrup than this but it works
Do u have a video on how to set the machine right
Mona Sala I will soon!
give me any recipes HERE
Get ya a clip on thermometer for the milk steamin.
great idea. I just do it by touch. maybe I will get a thermometer soon.
BOOM!!!!😁😊
BOOM BABY!
+1 for "biCOtti". lol
ilukac ahhaha
Kudos 👍👍👍
begotten59 why thank you
BOOM BABY!
lol
Thanks for the useful tips. Good advice to keep the coffee machine clean. Its a great looking unit. One thing I have to mention however - leaving the towel and all the crap on top of the machine makes it look super UGLY!
True enough!
Great tips and video. Watched this on Saturday and what I learned really helped me greatly improve both my extraction and milk texturing techniques.
thank you! I will make another one with my new camera and with new tips!
I would spray some steam out again after you're done with the milk. The milk residue can get back into the machine and smell terrible. Quick question, my portafilter basket always pops out when i knock out the grinds, do you know how I can make sure it stays in the portafilter? Im close to buying a bottomless one.
Film Magician I do purge the wand after. I am not sure why but it sounds like your basket is warped
i will upgrading from Brevile bdc650 to barista express in a week.
François Cormier yes I still need to purge a shot because steam still comes out of the head
Thank you for the video
thank you for watching!
Just got my machine, problem is there is no much espresso coming out especially single shot. I tried different sizes , just lots of water coming out at the bottom of the machine.
wengdanger you can restore it to factory settings or just program the buttons to make smaller shots
We need im legend 2!!
Ervis Gjonaj we do
Thanks for this video...I subbed and like it taught me a lot. Just got this machine and I'm a complete rookie but these tips will be tried tomorrow!
nice Mike! I should do more videos on it. I have like 5 now.
Great job man!
thanks! more where that came from.
i like!
thank you!
Hi, is there any way to keep my beans from going stale? what I mean is, is there a way to extract all beans from under the hopper, so I can keep them in an airtight container? Thank you
hello I just filled the hopper with only as much beans as I need for the day. Its about 21 grams
great little video. i like your style. thanks.
thank you Kim!
Where was your grind amount dial (on the front) and grind size setting (on the side)?
I is usually all the way to then smallest timer amount and I just dose manually. I think the amount of coffee it grinds is crazy for the 20grams needed. so I just hold the button down. I also am currently at grind size 4 with my own freshly roasted beans. Thanks for watching Joe!
Hi James! Thank you for this great video!
A question for you: you say that “it’s more 20 sec with this machine than 30sec? Why do you say that?
Great tip on the towel and paint brush!
Honest Cigar Reviews thanks for getting back to me mate I’ve bought one today and gone through nearly 500 grams of beans setting it up.
I'll be buying a salt shaker to for cinnamon. I hadn't thought of that. Thanks for the video.
oh sure! Its just ground cinnamon.
Nice video, just got one of these lil thiccies
Do you use dual wall filter and which number of grind size you choose?
I just made a new video on that. I use the single wall double shot basket. I use normally around 5 on the grind setting.
Nice tips. I have the same machine. My coffee puck seems to be quite wet. What do I need to do? Thanks.
I think it happens to me too when the coffee isn't fresh enough or if it isn't tamped enough
We got this machine the other day and wish we saw this before many cups of bad coffee! Thanks for great tips
no problem Una! i will make a lot more videos on it too!
Can you make a regular cup of coffee with this or even a pot of coffee?
Me Me no pots of coffee but you can add hot water to espresso and make an americano
Yes, in a way. To get the best flavored Americano, fill your cup with the hot water from the machine, then extract the espresso shot(s) atop the water. The crema will float the cup better than if you do it the opposite way.
Very entertaining, full of great information and you can tell how much passion you have. Kudos! ^+^
thank you so much Ben! I do a lot of coffee videos so sub for more of this machine!
You are very welcome James. Yesterday, we ordered the stainless steel classic version of the Breville BES870XL. I watched many videos and two of them were yours. I'm subscribing to your channel, please feel free to subscribe to mine ;)😉
will do !
Then with the second dose a full tamp.
awesome video! liked/subbed, lookin' forward to trying some of your tips! thanks!!
more to come!
Great quick ideas.
Hey Man, I have the same machine, it's only about a week old. When I first got it it was running killer shots and now no matter what I do the shots smell and taste burnt. Any thoughts?
maybe the beans are old now?
I appreciate you getting back to me. It ended up being the machine. I'm not sure what was wrong with it, but I brought it back and got a new one. I'm all set again. The new one is working great so far.
oh nice!!!!
What’s the Monin syrup? I’ve never had it.. is it a flavoured sweetener ?? If yes- what flavour ?
Thx
davidpatrickmagic yes monin is a brand of syrups. They are great for coffee. Like Carmel or vanilla or whatever you like in coffee
Very popular syrup brand, if you're into sweeteners I'd look at making your own at home. They're super easy and often taste far better!!
Just got mine today. I’m really excited
sweet! did you use my link? I am making more videos on this. I have made a few more too!
Hey mate, got the same coffee machine and really been having trouble with getting it in the Nespresso range. It’s starts off in the range but then becomes overpressure. We have tried fine tuning with amount and size of grind. Any tips on how to get it into the pressure range? Also what number of course are you running for those beans?
hey Cody! What is the Nespresso range? is that espresso range? 5 is my grind size. I have whole video series on it. maybe you are tamping too hard?
Yes I meant espresso 😂😂 I will have a watch. Thank you for your reply!
Thanks so much I am really happy with machine that was the best coffee I had this morning in a long time thanks to your video
