- [Originally aired 04.30.15] The NFL Draft is tonight and that means dozens of young men will become instant millionaires once their names are called, but many of them are already thousands and possibly millions in debt.
Roland Martin, host of NewsOne Now said, “When you see them walking across that stage dripping in diamonds, they’re already going to be driving Range Rovers and Benzs and they haven’t even signed a contract yet,” these “new money” millionaires will have already started their lucrative pro sports careers owing somebody a lot of money.
Former NFL player Phillip Buchanon knows all too well the story of “new money.” After being drafted to play in the NFL, Buchanan says his mother demanded $1 million for raising him.
Buchanon joined Martin Thursday on NewsOne Now to discuss his book, New Money: Staying Rich, and the financial burdens professional athletes face.

Yet many single mothers do it, and many outright demand that their sons contribute and take care of them as if they were their husbands. They pressure these boys at early ages, as I saw with the 5 year old on that show. When I was 5, I think I wanted to be Superman. I didn't want to be rich so I could take care of my family. I never faced that pressure. I was free to dream and think like a kid.

Military Veteran here. I got some back pay from a VA Disability payout. It was over $10k I'll just say that. Man my mom was on me like flies on Sh*t.. Mind you she blew like $7-$10k when I went on my 1st deployment. I gave her PO. I was 21, I had wrecked my car less than a week before I deployed. She sent me the damn poa letter to Iraq. But failed to tell me about the $2800 check the car insurance paid out to me. She was spending money as if I wasnt coming back. This happens a lot in the military & with Veterans. I thought. I read this book a few years ago. It was soooo good, such an eye opener about what some pro athletes go through. I was shocked when I read the part about his mother asking for $1M. It's a good book for anyone who wants or needs financial information.
He owes her nothing! Im a single dad my son was 2 months old! Now he has a better job as i ever had and more money! Its HIS not mine! I love him and all what ive done was for him! And im so proud of him...rich or not! I would NEVER say "give me i raised you"! He worked hard come to this! I did only my job as dad!

That's the problem. He didn't buy investor houses. Like a duplex or 4 unit with tenants. Instead, He buys single family houses where his relatives live for little rent or no rent. The mindset of a business person is sorely missing.

The American school system is designed to educate children, so by the time they are finished with high school or college they can start earning a living/income. But the American education curriculum does not teach high school student about saving and managing money, and college does not teach money management unless you major in finance or economics. We have to learn so we can teach our children and love ones that we received training in school to get a job, and we should receive our education at home from our parents and extended families. There's a big difference between training and education. The American education system is designed to train you to have to get into debt. The home education system should educate you to be debt free.
I didn't even watch the vid because the comment section turned me right off. It's amazing how people will find a reason to think the worst of black women. How about this one woman who asked her son for a million dollars? She is not representative of us all. I have three sons and a daughter ( yes, all by one man) sacrificed to care for them myself because I didn't want them left with babysitters, they went to private schools all their lives and got a good education, I paid for their braces, glasses, college etc. I am NOT rich and I went without myself to make sure they were good. Guess what I want for that? I WANT TO SEE MY KIDS DO WELL!! That's it! And guess what else??? I know a lot of black women like me. Only a person who lacks critical thinking skills believes this woman represents black women.
Racquel Dillon I hate to tell you but there are a bunch of mothers who are like his mother. I remember Jevon Kearse mom said the say thing. When it is put out there about poverty and the player is the key to getting out of it, people make it seem like this is what single black mothers are about. There are many stories out there in a single mother household and the player has to take care of her.

He's not going to let you feel poverty again, but to demand a mil after he bought you a house(in which he will have to pay the taxes & utilities on, too!)- Now that's a C'mon Man!! I think it depends on the type of relationship you have with your mother if it's ok for her to ask for million dollars. For me, I would happily give my mother a million if I suddenly became super rich. What my mother has done for me in my life is priceless. In fact, she wouldn't have to ask for the money, I would give it to her before I spent money on myself.

Cats don't want to take the time read (or take some courses) to learn about money, investments, good & bad debt, and compound interest. I guess it would cut the into their "make it rain at the strip club" time.
The cycle of black men in sports (especially college sports) doesn't endorse them to take advantage of their education. Black folks think money is what's gonna make us better people. It's not. Its self pride, education, and integrity. If you have all those things you figure out how to make a good life for yourself. But if you're a dummy. You'll just a temporarily rich dummy.
As disappointed and annoyed he may be towards his mother, he should have taken into consideration what it took for his mother to raise him from a baby up to that point of him being drafted and in the hood at that and especially if he's from a single parent household and therefore shouldn't come spewing to the whole world that his mother asked him for a million dollars. He absolutely didn't gained anything by saying such and worst yet, his mother getting insults and criticisms on this powerful medium. .

Family is a fucked up thing. My father worked at an auto repair facility. Would always work on my aunts and cousins cars for free or very minimal costs. Fast forward 5 failed knee surgeries later, and they won’t spare a dime to help with rent after he is forced into disability

What a helpful video......
I have NO LOVE for sports, But, I do want to see those that are getting rich quick, Get Protected.....Often from their own family members.
Yup, I'm an engineer. That relatively "good" money can be gone in an instant if you don't budget and save. I live below my means. I remember from where I came.
Money management is simple. Save half of everything that you earn while you are playing professional sports, especially football, and live off the rest. Do not chase in behind the symbols of success. There is a myth perpetrated by the Diamond industry that diamonds are rare, and they rob silly people blind with it. Do not go out and father all of those children. I am amazed that these black guys can not learn from the mistakes that the guys who went before them made. It's like " I am black so I am supposed to do that" Bentley, bling- bling, baby mama, monstrosity of a house, opening a business ( football is your business, and it is paying off well, so put your money in the bank, and tell that scam artist who comes to you telling you to go play football, and let him'her take care of your money, to get the f#*k out of your face). Do not invest in anything. Mama gets her con in on children early, making them believe that they owe her something for rearing them. Actually daddy, unless mama selected some no good thug who hit it and quit it, is the one who put that roof over your head, kept food on the table, lights on, etc, but mama takes credit for it. If you love your parents , and want to provide for them that's excellent, but you do not owe it to them for rearing you.
That's sad take care of the fam but don't get taken advantage of
