      I WISH MY PARENTS WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER READ THIS MESSAGE!!. It was a nice looking quad, Arctic Cat 700 If I'm not mistaken. Had a "custom" snorkel made out of PVC Pipe. While it looked cool I think it was the source of all our problems. Wet intake and filter lead to much needed repairs, couple that with shady mechanics and would be thieves they ended up selling it because it was a hassle maintaining it.

    My first ATV was a crashed one. I thought I just needed a lower arm and handlebars. After a closer look when I got home the rear case was cracked from the crash and the POS put grease around it and threw dirt and leaves on it to cover it up. I now have a parts bike for 3 other quads just like it. Mixed blessing I guess?

I wish i had this video back in 2009 when i bought my 01 450 foreman, i got it for a good deal.. and with good reason, lol, but after a top end rebuild, all new shocks, a disc break conversion, new tires, wheels, both diffs rebuilt and every bearing replaced and all factory graphics replaced it's just like a brand new bike, but because of that experience when i decided to get something else i bought a brand new one. that way i know where it's been and what's been done to it.

    Look for cracks in the control arms and elsewhere on the frame with a bright flashlight
    Pull off wheels/brake covers and look at bearing seals
    Put on jack and spin wheels and listen
    inspect cv/drive train boots with a bright flashlight

    Well. It's one thing to check for these issues, but it's another to say it's a breaking point. Axle bearings and cv axles or just even the boots are easy jobs for even a joe smoe to figure out. Definitely a talking point to lower the purchase price, but these are wear items on any atv that the new owner should learn to do themselves and not fork out ridiculous prices to a shop to do.

  • @rickringler5021
    @rickringler5021 3 года назад +5

    You missed the most important thing to look at, the air box. When looking at units for possible trade in at dealership where I worked for 32 years, the “very” first thing I did was remove seat and look in air box. This will really tell you what you are dealing with. Too frequently you would find air box full of muddy water, filter missing, falling apart or find a rodent nest. You need to be seeing a foam air filter that has been properly treated with foam filter treatment. That foam filter with no treatment is no “filter” at all, dirt goes right through it. Once the engine has had dirt ingestion a complete tear down is required to completely clean out engine. Oil changes, flushes etc. will not get the debris out of engine as it lays in all nocks and crannies only to be flushed into oil again. I have seen ATV engines that were rebuilt twice at another dealership only to be smoking again in a few months, it happens fast. Then was rebuilt with complete engine tear down in our shop. Guess what, a moth later it was smoking again with new rings just as worn out as in previous we’ll intentioned rebuilds. We had not removed oil cooler and flushed dirt from it and it had allowed dirt to get back into engine. We did a rebuild again after cleaning cooler and no more problems. The two things that wear out from dirt contamination is rings and chains as in cam chains. Why? Because everything else gets filtered oil. Rings and chains run in the dirty oil. Took many years to acquire this knowledge but this is the way it is. Air filter maintenance on off road machines subject to dust and dirt is absolutely critical. So like I said this is the first thing to look for. If you don’t see proper maintenance, walk away. Every time.

    This is a Great video I have bought 3 of ATV's (1) a Suzuki quad runner my first ATV, My second 1 was a King Quad & I purchase a Warner winch for $500when I sold the King Quad was my biggest mistake the guy that bought made out big time and I was the idiot for not $asking more money for it, It was only used for plowing snow , Now that I own a Arctic Cat 2006 400 auto 4x4 I just replaced the muffler this Cat had 944 miles and was used to used a Roll blower strap to it to blow leaves & Snow removal for $3000. 00 the muffler had a couple of holes in it so I bought another muffler and had it replaced the muffler cost me $325.00 plus $85.00 to have it changed over now it purrs like a Cat the Guy that sold it to me as of the other 2 knowing that he doesn't seem to take care of his toys, So with everything I have done to it New Oil & Filter replaced the muffler total cost is $3,555.00 there are more to as I won't be getting rid of it unless a major brake down which I can't afford they are nice toys to own but it's best to maintain it too. thank you for posting this video

    What about a sport atv what should you look for

    • @Stu650Zuk
      @Stu650Zuk 8 лет назад

      That is a good question for allot of people. The best used atv of any type I have found in my experience. Is one that I got from a nice suburb type area. They usually saw the least amount of use and hours. Always look for bone stock atvs and buy the nicest, newest model you can afford. Garage kept and not abused is the way to go,,,,especially on a sport quad which we know is going to be ridden hard. I've seen many sold for decent prices just because they never got to use it..They are out there, but you have to take the time or risk being stuck with an abused atv...nothing wrong with a used highly maintained machine though either....I always look at other vehicles in there driveway and garage..if they are not kept up, I'm sure the atv hasn't been either...I've rode and repaired atvs/motorcycles for over 40yrs. so its good to take someone with you with some experience also. I could go on, but you get the idea.

    • @Racer57
      @Racer57 8 лет назад

      Generally the same stuff. Leaks coming from the engine. You'll want to check chain slop/ is it oiled and the wear on it and the teeth on the gear. I've never owned a sport atv, but I imagine it's about the same. Maybe see if theres a what to check on a dirt bike video, it'd be a little closer to that maybe.

    • @gregrowe1168
      @gregrowe1168 8 лет назад

      A highly modified sport quad, such as engine or suspension mods, usually means it was used for racing. A used racing quad is not something you want to buy unless you don't mind a high maintenance machine. I think a sport quad that is totally stock is the way to go. Cost is usually less and reliability is higher.

    Tip #1, don't buy a Honda Rincon. The Rincon is an atv that doesn't do anything well. Its not powerful enough to be sporty and its not geared low enough to do work. And if something goes wrong in the transmission, its so expensive to fix that most just get rid of them. Power steering and diff-lock were somehow things that were never even optional on the Rincon even though Honda calls it the flagship model. It was Honda's way of doing things different than everyone else that has cvt auto utility quads. Sometimes different isn't better, as is the case here.

    • @trailblazers795

    Best advice: do not buy a used 4x4 from Canada, Texas, or Louisiana. 99% of life probably to the bars in mud and water!!! LOL

    • @sxscustom
      @sxscustom 7 лет назад +3

      Dan Grippe muhahaha... us canadians drive them into the deepest mud and skeg and water... we do take care of them probably more. because we dont want to break down in 5 feet of skeg mud or water. but if u buy ine from us mud runners expect scratchs

      2/21/17, What I'd like to know is for the price (new) , are these things street-legal? Some of them cost almost as much as a Jeep or small pickup, which would probably prove more useful.

      Preston Weiters Jr. You need plates but I don't know what qualifies a vehicle for plates.

      This is true we’ll snorkel and submerge pretty much any ATV or ATC here in Louisiana ( my sons Polaris 90 is snorkeled)

      Preston Weiters Jr. Once you step foot in some Canadian(SK) skeg, you'll realize REAL fast how little use a jeep or small truck is... unless your out rocking with an 800cc or bigger your gonna get burried in that skeg and be almost impossible to get out of.
      Check out ostacruiser channel, and youll see what im mean about SK skeg

      Definitely go for the honda, I have had mine for a while now and it's on the trails more often than my bud 500 sportsman

    • @gregrowe1168
      @gregrowe1168 8 лет назад

      A Rincon is a complete turd. I'd get a Brute Force or Grizzly 700 instead. The Sportsman 800 is a good performing quad for the money too.

    • @BOOSTEDUTV
      @BOOSTEDUTV 8 лет назад

      Do you even own a rincon? I doubt it, and you haven't seen what there capable of, if you think they are turds, my bro has a grizz 700 and in every imaginable way I can do everything he does just as good or better

    • @BOOSTEDUTV
      @BOOSTEDUTV 8 лет назад +3

      What ever you decide do yourself a favor and stay away from the broke force, they get that name for a reason. I have two different buddies with them and they are falling apart entirely. And on polaris atv's in general the electronics are crap.
      Like I had said before Hondas are quality built machines

    • @gregrowe1168
      @gregrowe1168 8 лет назад

      Most Hondas anyway. The Rincon is adequate I guess but so many other choices out there that have more power. A Grizzly 700 is just a much better atv all around. More power, better suspension, more ground clearance, diff-lock, optional power steering. From your youtube name, its obvious you had to modify your Rincon engine to get any power out of it. You don't need to spend the extra cash on anything else to do that. Polaris does have issues with electronics but those are easy fixes. Mid 2000's Suzuki King Quads had weak frames, along with the earlier Can Am Outlanders. Don't get me wrong, I do think Honda builds quality utility atvs. But the lack of power just doesn't make them very fun to ride.
