Tbf, Nintendo do still make absolutely incredible games, Xenoblade Chronicles 3 is a masterpiece and is quite frankly proof of that, Nintendo knows that anything liked by the normies such as Mario, Pokemon and the Sports titles will automatically sell, hence there’s no need to put effort into those series

I honestly think Nintendo could make levels like these if they would just trust the players to be able to beat them. They used to make awesome levels back with SMW and stuff but they decided to make the 2D games easier when they rebooted them. Hopefully they learned from the whole Maker experiment as well as popular rom hacks and whatever the 2D Mario team is working on turns out to be a banger.
I don't want this message to disparage the creator at all. This is crazy, top notch quality that absolutely fits in with Nintendo's work. This was just one person who put this together? That's pretty nuts, if so and in a sense, more impressive than an entire Nintendo team working on it in certain respects. But just to give Nintendo a slight defense: I think Dave might be a bit used to NSMB exposure via MM2, which has a lot of features stripped out of it which is exacerbated by poor level designers, haha. Oh, and to a lesser extent, the visuals in MM2 are on constant repeat where the background of every level is always the same. Nintendo obviously varies that in their actual NSMB games. I think another big difference is that with this hack, they are free to make it as difficult as they choose. Nintendo's official games are going to have to be geared towards a less skilled audience. The levels featured in this video would probably be 'world 8' difficulty for a large portion of Nintendo's audience. And I think that increased difficulty probably makes this a lot more engaging. More importantly, this shows off a LOT of what is missing in MM2, and hopefully will come in the assumed MM3. #1 - Must find a way to allow the auto zoom in/outs to be added to levels. We often think of "blind jumps/falls" as the level designer's fault, but the game's initial design is also pretty bad. Mario can jump high & far. Except he can't because we constantly need to design around the fact that he can jump to things that shouldn't be off-screen. That's some garbage. #2 - The rotating & walkable platforms need to come into play. Including the circular platforms. #3 - Allow 'hidden areas' behind foreground elements. #4 - I really liked those gates that swung when you went through. Maybe also add in a hybrid that stays locked in place afterwards (and maybe additionally allow the arrow to flip the other direction so it can be switched back if pushed that way.) This might actually be worthy of being at #2 when I think about how much this could be used for puzzle levels and mechanics. Wow. This post got long quickly.
