  • In today's travel vlog we leave Colorado driving our Class C RV to Monument Valley, Utah. This has been a place we've always dreamed of going to since we started to full time RV, but unfortunately, it's closed due to COVID. We make the most of it free camping in the most incredible spot before returning back to Colorado where we stay at a Harvest Hosts Brewery in Mancos before we drive the Million Dollar Highway!

@@EatSeeRV yes Liz it is seriously a great hike...absolutely beautiful with a scenic falls... It's pretty long.. Takes about. 4-5 hours in and out... Starts at the small campground there..1st come basis for the camping spots there.. Just get there early and you'll likely get a site as long as it's not main season... Otherwise theres as cool state campground at Escalante with cool hiking there too...petrified hike.. Just be sure to go all the way in to get to the really cool petrified stuff... Great area...Escalante is close by lower Calf Creek falls area... And if in the area of Moab, do the Corona Arch hike....free and really really fun!

Nice videos guys, just wanted to tell you to not worry about the Sequoias as they have very thick bark and are well protected from forest fires, one of the reasons they are so big and old. In fact it takes a forest fire for their seeds to open. Enjoy the Rockies and if you head back west, 24 in Utah is a great ride and you could loop through Vegas and cross the Hoover to make your way to the Canyon.

Since ~May, the national parks have intermittently been closed due to Covid So, I'm surprised you did not check Monument Valley's status in advance. I recommend paying for a guided tour at Monument Valley. They go to places otherwise out of bounds. If you have a choice, select one of the elders. They have greater reverence and historical perspective. My one complaint was that there was litter in places (beer and liquor bottles, cans, etc.),and much of it looked like it had been there for a long time. They need to clean this up.

We were lucky enough to RV into Monument Valley 2 years ago. It was absolutely awesome. I stood on hallowed ground walked by the Duke in some of his John Ford westerns. We took a Polaris RZR on a trailer with us and used it to explore inside the Navajo Reservation area after paying the entry fee. I got up early one morning and took the RZR into the valley not too long after dawn. As the sun rose and cast the long monument shadows it was clear I truly was on hallowed ground as the beauty was indescribable. I was overtaken with emotion as the scenes of old John Wayne films I enjoyed as a kid and even 55 years later, came rushing back in full technicolor to my mind. I felt a chill and embraced the moment alone in the quiet of the dawn. Whatever you do, wherever you go in life, take a brief moment of that life to visit Monument Valley. You won’t be sorry I promise.

As an old Colorado Native I like to properly educate visitors. The section of Highway 50 from Silverton to Ouray is the Million Dollar Highway. This section of road was originally built by Otto Mears as a toll way in 1883 and operated as such until the 1920’s when it was rebuilt. Also, the name has to do with the fact that builders used gravel from rock waste and mill tailings produced during extraction and beneficiation of minerals silver and gold and that the dirt was so rich in ore, it was worth a million dollars a mile of road built. When it was rebuilt in the 1920’s that is when it was discovered the dirt was so rich in ore.

I feel your pain. We recently drove up from Vegas to Great Basin National Park because they posted their visitor center was open and I checked the weather and we'd just barely make it with good weather. But when we got there, the 'open visitor center' was just a table outside with a ranger. None of the exhibits, no serious learning activities, nothing. I can spend hours in a visitor center and I was so looking forward to seeing the slice of Prometheus (oldest tree) in the visitor center. And I'm homeschooling my son right now so I wanted to show him everything in the visitor center. But no. I was so sad I actually cried. Then... the weather was too cold for us to safely camp in the park where we'd planned to. So we had to drive hours away to camp in Ely where the weather was warmer. AND the scenic drive felt out of reach of us.. because of timing and my limited experience driving our rig. We will be going back for sure, and we made up for it with cool state park visits, but that experience was very disappointing.
