2 games I would recommend heavily from this year are Crosscode (I think it had playable demo versions b4 2018 but it was released this year) and The Missing. Both are insanely creative games that have really beautifully crafted stories, Crosscode being set within an RPG where they manage to create a mute character with more personality that 90% of Triple A protagonists, and the other is a horror puzzle game where you are basically breaking your main character in various ways to find your friend (well, a bit more than friend ;) ). Two of my favourite games ever played honestly.
glad the first comment i saw included Crosscode. It was just a blast to play imo. Although sometimes the puzzles felt... long (but mostly due to me being dumb), i haven't played through a game in long sessions since NieR: Automata
@@Shakzor1 I really like the difficulty option for that. You can increase puzzle timers by a percentage in the options, which made some puzzles achievable for me. Being able to just lower the amount of damage I took to a level when things are challenging but not too frustrating really makes this game stand out for me.
The Missing is the first game in 6 years to make me cry. The last one was Mass Effect 3, and they were tears of rage. But seriously, The Missing is great. It's not a FUN game to play, in the same way that a really sad movie isn't FUN to watch, but it's worth it in the end.
Subnautica is quite possibly my favorite game that I've ever played, just love how everything is exploration based, and how unnerving it is with the spooky serpent bois
No one is talking about Kenshi, one of the best game I played this year and it is completely ignored by everyone, nobody is hearing about this game. Just came out this month after 12 years in development. You can be a solo adventurer, a trader, a bandit, a drug dealer, you can even build your own army or your own town and conquer other towns. Other towns will attack you too especially if you make them your enemies, although you can forge alliances. The game is filled with emergent gameplay, you don't die instantly, you get injured in middle of nowhere you have to crawl back to town or bleed to death but there are fate worst than death in this game, you get caught by cannibals they will put you in cage and get to eat you piece by piece or get caught by slavers and become a slave. (You can try to escape though) You can even get crippled in this game, your arms or legs get amputated and it is gone forever, you can still keep on surviving even after that. I hope this game get the attention it deserves. If you have some aspects of it that you don't like it is completely modable, it has its own modding tool and quite easy to use.
Conversely Crosscode should definitely be my thing and I really didn't get it. Combat didn't gel and the attempt at making a robust stat/character system fell flat to me.

My biggest problem with Cultist Simulator is how sudden death comes, and how there is never any warning until it is too late. Over a dozen hours of careful work, suddenly wasted because you didn't know the Hunter could grab you instead of one of your 20 cultists? And to top it off, forcing you to wait 60 seconds pretending that you could save myself, when there is no way to do anything useful in such a short amount of time? Enter the Gungeon is the best rouge-like game of all time. Not only does it paint every corner of the game with brilliant references, fun weapons and enjoyable challenges but is DRIPPING with charm and a INSANELY thematically entertaining dungeon crawl with impressive boss fights, npcs and character designs that change up how you approach the gungeon. It gives rouge-like games a brand new refreshing approach that outshines every other game in the genre SO THOROUGHLY that I am stricken aghast at its showing here on this list only to be a seeming set as example of a rouge-like that fails to compare to Deadcells. While both games are VERY good, Enter the Gungeon in my opinion based on hours and hours of in depth game play that still, (after beating the game more than 100 times and I'm probably low balling this number big time) never fails to provide an amazingly perfected skill-testing level of difficulty, distinctive runs of its ever changing generated floor layouts, boss fights (rounding 3 possible bosses you may encounter once per floor) and a cavalcade of guns that change up how tackle your go at it through with EVERY single run that you attempt. I have never seen a game bring so much polish to the table the way Enter the Gungeon has, nor overall replayability that delivers such a richly packed gaming experience from not only an indie developer but ANY developer. BAR. NONE. I know there are some BAD rouge likes out there but to depict Enter the Gungeon as one of them is doing both yourself and this MASTERPIECE a huge disservice in regards to a title that I would very openly give the #1 spot of "Best Games I have ever played in my 29 years of life on this earth." Enter the Gungeon is a game more people "should have played" if they want to experience a rouge-like done PERFECTLY. If you haven't played this game yet go try it. It's currently ON SALE OF ALL THINGS (this game deserves such a bigger price tag for what Dodgeroll has accomplished) for only $7.50. Enter the Gungeon is amazing and its even MORE amazing playing with a friend in a co-op run. Play this game. You will NOT regret it if you truly appreciate the rouge-like genre of video games. Which lemme tell you, I am certainly not bored of when done this well. And If this review isn't deceptive enough go check out videogamedunkey's review of it that showcases just how amazing this game really is.

My top game of 2018 (not on the list at least) would be Distance. It was in beta before 2018, but it came out of early access this year so I'm counting it. It's a really cool and unique racing game, with platformer elements and a very interesting world behind it. It's got a great level editor and a whole heap of user made content as well. The learning curve is steep, but once you're good at the game it feel amazing to zoom through levels avoiding each and every obstacle the game throws at you. Did i mention that the car flies? Because the car flies.
Overcooked it's criminally underrated It's fun af when playing couch co-op with friends It's super simple too, i got a couple of my non-gamer friends enjoying it to the point of staying over just to play this game
Never watched this channel before, until I saw a thumbnail recommending it from the RUclips algorithm of hits and mostly misses. 4 minutes in, I subscribed to the channel. This is well written critique. More please :)
I can't believe you included Eternal in this, it's literally my current addiction, this game is in my opinion miles ahead of Hearthstone because it's the same level of quality + new original mechanics + a completely free model that doesnt force you to buy decks to compete. I have spent nothing in this game and I keep receiving so many packs and cards for free, it feels great and the PvE gamemode is actually amazing especially for when I started and didn't know how to play so I was able to learn all the mechanics without going blindly into PvP
11:05 never have I heard someone else mention my one phobia. I can play underwater games but I can't go near the ocean, especially when I can't see land I get spooked.
if you wanna ruin friendships with someone thats easily scared subnautica is the way to do it. depth is also a good choice, i know that was a pun but meh now its a game suggestion :P sub: if this confuses you. thats because subnautica is an open world base building with the goal of building a shuttle to return to your home after your ship crashes. its not a lie, totally what happens, just doesnt include the part about giant scary monsters that appear out of no where and teleporting monsters that only exist to kill you. depth: youre a diver going into ship wrecks to look for loot and race to get the most. no need to mention the shark, its ability to mutate, how little light there is, or how fast it can swim in and drag you off.
Another CCG game i actually really like is Faeria! Its not perfect, but its just a surprisingly chill game, absolutely GORGEOUSly drawn, and just a fun ccg to play a couple of casual games of without getting toxic or anything!
You teased two of my favorite games of this year by planting their soundtracks before talking about them. Considering the hours I put into these games, I noticed /immediately/. Subnautica and Into the Breach. Both amazing games with amazing soundtracks that I would notice anywhere.
My GOTY is gonna have to be The Messenger, for the surprisingly deep story, strong narrative drive really solid gameplay and a really well polished presentation. It's the game that has been so much more than what it seems like on the surface.
I have to say the length of a jrpg is one of the reasons i love them (though it does mean they have to hook me quick because im not wasting that much time on something that doesn't sell me on it in the first hour.
8:22 What? We're at nearly peak rogue-like love this year. So many good games and good ones are coming out and doing very well. I don't think people are sick of them at all
Good video. Please include a little speech pause in between games. I was always very confused when you started talking about a new game because I thought you were still on the old one.
@@nikitas1841 "if you wanna play a jrpg" Anyone who does is fine with the time requirements Persona 5 is really good at modernising some of outdated jrpg mechanics and respects your time though

I'm quite late, but I have to make a recommendation: The Fall part2. If someone wants to check it and the first part out I won't give away too much, they are also on sale right now. In The Fall you control a military assistance AI named ARID, who is the OS of as suit of combat armor. You awaken while falling onto an unknown planet and your pilot is unresponsive. Your medical scanners are also offline so protocol requires you to keep the pilot alive and find equipment to assertain his wellbeing. The entirety of those two games is about an AI learning and learning to think outside the box. The first game is brilliant, but a little short, the second remedies much of this and I hope to see the next one as soon as storywise possible.
According to these games, it seems people got tired of traditional genres, and game makers tried to experiment with new onces, saving resources from investing in good graphic, in order to find what people want to play nowdays.
My personal three games of 2018: - Subnautica - GRIS (missing in the list. Such a fantastic and wonderful experience) - Frostpunk (granted i looked up some strategies, tips and layouts before playing the game without spoiling the experience) ... (and maybe Deep Space Waifu: Nekomimi ^^)

I have never seen a game bring so much polish to the table the way Enter the Gungeon has, nor overall replayability that delivers such a richly packed gaming experience from not only an indie developer but ANY developer. BAR. NONE. I know there are some BAD rouge likes out there but to depict Enter the Gungeon as one of them is doing both yourself and this MASTERPIECE a huge disservice in regards to a title that I would very openly give the #1 spot of "Best Games I have ever played in my 29 years of life on this earth."
Enter the Gungeon is a game more people "should have played" if they want to experience a rouge-like done PERFECTLY.
+1 to "Enter the Gungeon > dead cells"... Enter the gungeon is such a fun game that I actually prefer it over Binding of Isaac
You make the best videos so you go gurl!!
No-one has ever said "you go gurl" to me before - I like it.
I cringed when I read this
@@ArchitectofGames Ganbatte!
no Crosscode GRIS or iconoclast?
GRIS only came out like a week before this video. The other two are pretty substantial omissions though
Thanks I needed to know what to spend my money on for the steam sale
Please spend some money on cold steel or trails in the sky, ouroburos needs more budget.
I just realized I never subscribed to you. I first came across your channel with your "Refactionizing 4X" video, and I was thrilled to see you talk about Endless Legend, not that I am at all biased or anything. I haven't had the leisure to follow all your videos in the meantime, but I watched some of them, and you're doing a great job.
The Theresa May joke made me laugh loudly. Fantastic video.
Not having "The Messenger" in this list is really sad, this game is a criminally underrated masterpiece
5:18 Heh, nice.
1:36 "Corona Woods".
Bring your facemask.
"...intertwining of comics and games at some point in the future"
Yeah, no, we have that already, Comix Zone exists
As a stamp collector, I'm glad I watched this
Thank you so much for making me discover Prismata. It's the turn based RTS I never knew I wanted. It's a shame nobody heard about it.
Overcooked it's criminally underrated
It's fun af when playing couch co-op with friends
It's super simple too, i got a couple of my non-gamer friends enjoying it to the point of staying over just to play this game
"doesn't advertise itself on spookiness" proceeds to describe cults and mind altering smoke as major points
One I think you should have played at the tail-end of 2018 would be ZeroRanger, an interesting little game that doesn't get enough attention.
I rediscovered Enter the Gungeon this year, having a blast with the "farewell to arms" content
Finally a list that doesn't compile the same 10 games everyone else is showing. Lol. Great video!
Still in awe how well you present your vids.
This is the first video I see where someone recommend smoke and sacrifice that game is a hidden gem
Into the Breach is such an amazing game, yet it seems like hardly anyone played it this year
Forager and Wandersong in the same video? Heck yes man.
Into The Breach really is a blast. Every round is a tough but mostly solvable puzzle. If you want to feel clever, play this game.
I really enjoy your channel man! High quality content in every video. Merry Christmas, keep it up!
11:05 never have I heard someone else mention my one phobia. I can play underwater games but I can't go near the ocean, especially when I can't see land I get spooked.
if you wanna ruin friendships with someone thats easily scared subnautica is the way to do it.
depth is also a good choice, i know that was a pun but meh now its a game suggestion :P
sub: if this confuses you. thats because subnautica is an open world base building with the goal of building a shuttle to return to your home after your ship crashes. its not a lie, totally what happens, just doesnt include the part about giant scary monsters that appear out of no where and teleporting monsters that only exist to kill you.
depth: youre a diver going into ship wrecks to look for loot and race to get the most. no need to mention the shark, its ability to mutate, how little light there is, or how fast it can swim in and drag you off.
Great work this year man. Can't wait for what you come up with next!
YES RED STRINGS CLUB! im so glad you mentioned that
My GOTY is gonna have to be The Messenger, for the surprisingly deep story, strong narrative drive really solid gameplay and a really well polished presentation. It's the game that has been so much more than what it seems like on the surface.
God red strings club is so fucking good. Honestly one of my favourite games this year
Can't wait to see what's going on next year, cheers mate!
I have to say the length of a jrpg is one of the reasons i love them (though it does mean they have to hook me quick because im not wasting that much time on something that doesn't sell me on it in the first hour.
subbed bro! I might not see you for the most part of 2019 but i want to see you at the end of it.
"The unbread". That, alone, makes me want to play! XD
8:22 What?
We're at nearly peak rogue-like love this year. So many good games and good ones are coming out and doing very well. I don't think people are sick of them at all
Nice to see some of these games blow up
Thank you for awesome content through the year! Found your channel and watched all of your videos after that. Good content mate!
This list of games contains several of my favorite games of ALL TIME! Excellent assembly of digital addictive interactive media.
these are some really good semi obscure recommendations
Good video. Please include a little speech pause in between games. I was always very confused when you started talking about a new game because I thought you were still on the old one.
I'm going to track down Heartbeat right now! Looks like exactly my kind of thing!
The Red Strings Club is a great game, and I actually thought the final third is better than you give it credit for.
agreed. I want a sequel, or something of a similar vain, myself.
Into the Breach is a radiant masterpiece, I absolutely agree.
This is a big list of really interesting-looking games. I can't wait to get my desktop PC back and try out a few of them.
Play Persona 5 if you wanna play a jrpg.
Or use those 110 hours to play a dozen other games.
@@nikitas1841 Of course you could play Persona 3 or Persona 4 as well :)
@@nikitas1841 "if you wanna play a jrpg"
Anyone who does is fine with the time requirements
Persona 5 is really good at modernising some of outdated jrpg mechanics and respects your time though
Persona 5 isn't really full of pointless side missions like and grinding like most other jrpgs though. About 50% of the side quests in Persona 5 are directly tied to one of the main character personal problems.
Or Trails in the sky
Appreciate you showing off heartbeat. Looks like something I'd be interested in, but have heard nothing about.
For anyone watching, Subnautica is being given for free until day 26/12, in Epic Games website!
ooooooo, thats quite a few games i'll be adding to my steam library to forget about xD
Sad that Lethal League Blaze isn't on this list. Really fantastic take on the fighting game that doesn't get enough attention.
My #1 game of the year has to be Ni no kuni II Revenant kingdom. Absolute masterpiece of a game that doesnt nearly get the attention that it deserves.
I honestly expected to see Rimwold on the list, but I guess it isn't really an obscure game.
My top game of the year is Nier Automata Become as Gods Edition, because I'll take any excuse to talk about Nier
Can relate
I'm saving this vid to use it as a list later. Thanks, man.
FYI Subnautica is currently free to keep on Epic Games Store.
I personally finds its tutorial to be... abysmal... though.
Sunset overdrive got ported to pc recently. A criminally underrated game.
If you liked Florence, it looks kind of similar to a free game I found on steam called "just bearly" it's completely free, and is a short display of anxiety through small puzzles and minigames.
Lucah: Born of a Dream ended up flying super under the radar, which is sad because it's really good.
Dear Adam, I thank you for your contribution for recruiting more candidates to the PC master race. (Disclaimer, no platform is great or lesser than its counterpart. I just enjoy PC more)
Eh. Celeste and slay the spire deserves a place on this list tbh
Yes, but Celeste won a game of the year award. So it not all that obscure.
Early access is weird. Slay the Spire technically releases next year. It's my most played game of the year though. :)
Why is my game always ignored
@@leonhardt-9795 idk man, we're always ignored
@@arianrhod-2783 ikr
Did you actually discuss Slay the Spire or just show a clip? That's been one of my favourite games to follow over the last year. Gets more interesting every update.
Celeste really needs to be on this too. Absolutely amazing game. Perfectly pairs challenging platforming with struggles on anxiety and depression. Amazing level design, total design integration and replayability
Slay the Spire isn't out yet, so it was propably just in the video. I hope he includes it in the next list.
I played it a few months ago, it was pretty good honestly. A nice twist on card game mechanics crossed with a progression system that feels natural.
I love the rimworld soundtrack at the start
you sir, you deserve at least 10x more subscribers in your channel. Awesome content.
Wandersong goes straight onto my wishlist, because it reminds me of Hue.
may + 'dirty cockney sla...i mean citizens' really cracked me up. ooof :D
I enjoy Monster Prom way more than I really feel like I should.
Long live indies! For the price of one bloated kinda cool-looking pile of addictive cash&time-siphoning AAA blandness you can have several unique experiences that you'll never forget. And you'll make a few people precariously living their dreams (indie devs) happier instead of filling the pockets of corporate billionaires.
I'm quite late, but I have to make a recommendation:
The Fall part2.
Where the water tastes like wine
According to these games, it seems people got tired of traditional genres, and game makers tried to experiment with new onces, saving resources from investing in good graphic, in order to find what people want to play nowdays.
Nice games, thank you, i'll definetly play some of them!
Into The Breach is great. It's one of the only games I've gone out of my way to get every achievement in.
My personal three games of 2018:
- Subnautica
- GRIS (missing in the list. Such a fantastic and wonderful experience)
- Frostpunk (granted i looked up some strategies, tips and layouts before playing the game without spoiling the experience)
...
(and maybe Deep Space Waifu: Nekomimi ^^)
"Public is getting sick of roguelikes".
That's hard to hear, since i'm making one.
