@@calebroth6035 it took a while for me to love midsommar, i will freely admit, especially since i strongly urged everyone and their (and my own) mother to watch Hereditary for the tour de force that is Toni Collette.
Agreed. I was surprised to see it on #2, but I can't really argue with it. Great directing, great acting, great script, great score... great movie. (But I disagree with Cinefix about not having anyone to blame here, because I see nothing much redeeming about that cunning lawyer of hers.)
My top five list of 2019 goes: 1. Portrait of a Lady on Fire 2. The Lighthouse 3. The Favourite 4. Joker 5. Parasite Now, "Parasite" is obviously a masterpiece: The cinematography is panoramic, perceptive, precise; the dialogs are believable, engulfing, to the point. The tone of narration is sharpsighted, subtle, sometimes sardonic, there is dark humour luring between the hyperrealistic staging of events. It is almost traditionally theatrical, wide shots and meticulous blocking and distinct dialog and all that, plus a luxurious set design and perfect camera angles. Very calm and yet hyperbolic, like a parable on life. "Joker" on the other hand does not feel like a stage play at all, it is very immersive, engulfing, melodramatic, cinematic in the use of expressive angles, cuts, closeups, lush set design and a myriad of props. It is very much in the tradition of Hollywood cinema, some say derivative in style, but then again it does make good use of a variety of semantically connected, narratively intermeshing motifs (almost a snowball turning into an avalanche) referencing ballet, juggling, slapstick, different types of clowns and comedy, all forms and sorts of drama: psychological drama, lonely improvisation, confined relationship roles, hired private engagements, free intimate stand-up routines, the world-as-stage, scripted broadcasts, movie theatres and tv studios, Gotham as a theatre of civil war, the drama of Joker turning from a pagliacco into a harlequin and shooting the brighella, the media circus from newspapers to network shows, questions of authenticity, social roles, fake characters and personas, public avatars and icons, makeup and masks. Very dynamic and symbolically layered. Also it translates a larger-than-life comic book opulence very well onto the screen. All this makes it so much more than the copycat effort some snobby critics tried to reduce it to. That's why I don't mind it standing on the shoulders of giants at all. Plus, it emotionally gripped me from beginning to end. What a (themepark) ride! Which leaves my top three... All three have a very distinct and original feel / style to them and carry certain moods perfectly: "The Favourite" has very daring cinematography that sticks out a lot, changes noticeably between shots but serves perfectly to support the tone and transport the atmosphere of each scene. The dialogues are witty, the cutting is brilliant, the pacing like a symphony. Very entertaining and fresh. The ever changing perspectives of "The Favourite" really mark the psychological and sociological distinctions between rural and more courteous environments, between naivety, intrigue and rancour, the powerplay unravelling, the stifling protocol and inherent violence of courtly manners and politics, and also the theatrical, playful decadence in between. The constantly shifting cinematography here plays out like a baroque piece of music. Especially the first two on my list are GREAT in EVERY ASPECT imaginable. Including the cinematography, sheer beauty there, and always telling something about the characters, dynamics and themes of the story. The costumes, dialogues, lighting and sound design are also fantastic in both "Portrait ..." and "The Lighthouse". To top it all off, both are TRULY ORIGINAL. Of my top 3 movies of 2019, "The Lighthouse" might be the most consistent, almost rigid, in its cinematography - which enhances the sentiments of isolation, closed up masculinity and delusion expressed in the story. Also, almost every still would serve well as a poster shot. Rarely have I seen such dense atmosphere and layered symbolism, such a compact way of storytelling, such oberwhelming and raw acting, such moody lighting and sound, all combined in one film. "Portrait of a Lady on Fire" just paints each scene and shot perfectly in colour and lighting, and the cinematography makes you follow every gaze between the protagonists and feel really close to the perception of an artist; very precise yet also very sensous, sharp and daring but also calm and empathetic. A slow burn that goes deep. A brilliant panorama of the living conditions and zeitgeist portrayed, and at the same time a subtle character study, it takes in so much so perceptively and turns everything into sublime art. Visually stunning on every level, never too overwhelming but opening up new angles and perspectives to experience the world, like true art should.

7:53 That translation is actually wrong. He didn't say "You're gonna kill somebody." Instead, he said "You're gonna get yourself killed (by mom)". I think this is quite a significant mistranslation.
I think categories should be, for the most part, chosen to describe the substance and not the form of the film. I can understand that in some occasions describing a formal aspect may be more informative for audiences, e.g. “Animation”. However I think “Foreign” is not one of those instances. I do not find this term particularly useful when I introspect to choose a film to watch.
Depends on how you see the foreign category. A lot of things are lost from a film due to culture, history, and mostly importantly, translation of dialogue. A foreign category isn't useful if you lump everything into it but it does mark a concern that you may not get some of the nuances involved in viewing it purely at a surface level.
I prefer Uncut Gems as #2 but that's more of a personal taste. It just baffles me that they say The Lighthouse didn't impress them like Get Out did, when The Lighthouse is far superior on every technical level, specially in cinematography. But that's just my opinion and I still respect you CineFix!
I love the way they do their top 10 with a whole bunch of other movies listed than just 10. Like a best of 2019 list rather than a top 10 best outright.
I agree, it's a smart way to ostensibly play to game of "10 best" while in fact, with the categories, just listing 50 or so amazing movies and expressing preferences between them
I love this channel for covering a wide variety of films aside from the usual blockbusters and awards films that get attention, as much as I like both kinds of films. Collider and Schmoesknow would never talk about stuff like The Souvenir, For Sama or Monos, or at least wouldn’t get near the same amount of coverage.
I pretty much agree - although I will say I heard a lot about Monos from Collider Movie Talk where Perri Nemiroff has recommended it a few times (along with Waves, Last Black Man, Wild Rose etc) and I wouldn't have seen it if it wasn't for that.
In the part of parasite where Song Sang Ho grabs his wife by the collar the subtitles in the movie say "You only live once" not "You're going to kill somebody"
1. Portrait of a Lady in Fire 2. The Lighthouse 3. Parasite 4. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood 5. Marriage Story 6. Le Mans 66 7. The Irishman 8. Midsommer 9. Joker 10. Knives Out
Would you care to elaborate on that? I did watch and enjoy the movie and it surely gave me something to think about and I find it stylistically brilliant, but in terms of genre I don't know what exactly you have on your mind.
It's like a very entertaining exposition, like an elaborate pilot to a mini-series, but as a standalone narrative it leads nowhere, its characters are established but not yet fully rounded, its themes are not explored deeply, its plot ends on a cliffhanger and does not feel like a morally ambivalent open ending of artistic choice but rather as crafted for the sole purpose of starting a franchise. Therefore, "Alita Battle Angel" fails to stand up on its own.
Great year for movies. I'd say: 1) The Irishman 2) The Lighthouse 3) An Officer and a Spy 4) Portrait of the lady on fire 5) Once upon a time in hollywood 6) Marriage Story 7) Uncut Gems 8) Little Women 9) Richard Jewel 10) Ford v Ferrari

I think it had too much unnecessary content and I like the original cut better. The colonialism aspect was done well but I don’t think it really flowed with the rest of the film. I can see the appeal however.

Same, most of those movies weren't even displayed in my city or will come out next year after the oscars

In my humble opinion "Foreign" should not be a category
Maybe they love to keep themselves country-based rather than worldwide.
Is this only because of Parasite?
Agree with you
I love you guys. You always expand my horizons when it comes to films. NetFlix here I come!
Good luck finding these (good) movies on netflix
The Lighthouse is the best movie of 2019
Agreed. Marriage Story makes sense as #2 and then I would say Uncut Gems or Parasite for #3.
Yeah they spilled the beans on this one
Here here
The Lighthouse is a movie doing everything it can to compensate for its empty, contrived plot and failing miserably. A waste of talent.

it wouldn't be that good if it weren't for scorsese's direction. I applaud netflix for funding it tho.
Your take on The Irishman is impeccable, though
Let’s be real. This was probably one of the best years for movies
So happy to see Apollo 11 getting the love it deserves
Man, I love this type of list with 30~40 films each one into their own genre. CineFix, you guys rock!
That scene of Marriage Story where she does the British accent made so little sense out of context that I watched the movie just to understand.

I love the way they do their top 10 with a whole bunch of other movies listed than just 10. Like a best of 2019 list rather than a top 10 best outright.
I love the way this show is written, it makes me feel like all of the films could’ve been someone’s favorite movie of 2019! I
I agree, it's a smart way to ostensibly play to game of "10 best" while in fact, with the categories, just listing 50 or so amazing movies and expressing preferences between them
I have watched the Irishman 3 times. I hardly ever watch a movie more than once in the same year. I fell in love. It is so good.
Yes, seen it twice and still want to rewatch it. It's that good.
The Lighthouse hasn't been getting enough praise
Amen brother
Lighthouse was really boring, weird and incoherent. Expected way more.

And both are wrong he said

Parasite was incredible! It's all genres in one XD
Would you care to elaborate on that? I did watch and enjoy the movie and it surely gave me something to think about and I find it stylistically brilliant, but in terms of genre I don't know what exactly you have on your mind.
Would you kindly make a "Best Movies of the Decade" video, Cinefix? I'm such a big fan and I really love your channel😊
My favorite RUclips channel EVERY year: Cinefix.
It’s such a shame that people didn’t like Alita Battle angle. Such a masterpiece
I think it sounds good. I also bought a poster!
I feel proud that I saw most everything mentioned in this video. Here's to more Cinefix in 2020
Never been in the first 100 views before. I just really like this channel
Great year for movies.

But they put that drivel/rehash of a movie to the 1st place to make out.
I am not a big MCU fan but Endgame deserves the place in this list because of how well it concluded the infinity saga. The MCU is overrated but Endgame was genuinely amazing

I'm going to hurt you for not saying Jojo Rabbit.
I agree, except for the omission of The Lighthouse
They mentioned it, just choosed Parasite over.
Apocalypse Now: Final Cut was my favorite film of 2019.
I think it had too much unnecessary content and I like the original cut better. The colonialism aspect was done well but I don’t think it really flowed with the rest of the film. I can see the appeal however.
I've only seen this and the director's cut. Director's cut was 3 hours and 20 minutes, I think.
What's the difference between that and redux? Cause redux had way too much extra content in it
Duckpool Turner Final cut has 20 minutes of the Redux removed. But I still like the original cut the best.
