Funny you should uploud this video now. Just recently I got a vintage Tie fighter pilot figure from a guy who explained he has the entire Kenner collection of figures, infact he has doubles of every single loose figure. And he is selling the ones that are in less good condition. Meanwhile sends away the mint ones for AFA grading. When I asked why he would do that, he explained he had most of these figures from childhood. He had the opportunity to play with them, touch them, feel them for his entire life. And said he wants to take his collecting to a whole new level by encasing them in these acrylic boxes. Stating to him these figures are no longer toys, but rather artifacts, and he wants his house to look like a professional toy museum. I learned an entirely new aspect of collecting I never really new about. It’s fascinating. And interesting. Although personally I like to play around with mine. Or at the very least display them actually standing next to eachother in scenes. But I have respect for this type of collecting as well all the same.
I am an opener, and want to inspect, pose and hold them periodically, have no desire to have anything graded, the value for me is in feelings or memories not monetary, so I am with you 💯 👍
Well said once again Chandler, "value" is the nostalgia 100% nothing else, I have all my childhood (Palitoy) figures and to me they are priceless despite not all being mint etc. Grading is way way too expensive, Id rather spend the $ on more figures. Cheers :):)
Just re-watched the whole video because I started late. I really appreciate them, even if they are short sometimes. I only have two hobbies - collecting vintage Star Wars and Triathlons. Your videos are a great collector’s perspective and for the pure joy of it, not because of the monetary value. I personally don’t care about the value. I do like to have them as clean and as mint as possible, but I’ll never sell. Thanks again!
Great video GQ Jedi. Totally agree with you. I have my Vinyl Cape Jawa in an Ian’s Display Box, and it looks just as cool, and I can open it whenever I want. Love the AT-AT t-shirt by the way!
I actually have have quite a bit of graded, but it's the Carded I prefer graded, the reason behind this is because the carded have never been loved. Plus I love the art on the cards. As for loose graded, I'm not keen on it all, they've been free, loved. And then put back in a case. But I would never give them grader companies my money, because that's all they are doing it for, the money. I have NEVER sent anything off to graders. I have always bought them on the second market or actually exchanged them for some of my Stan Solo haha. I completely understand your views bro and your collection is top drawer. Stan has full set of loose and we play with them regularly together. You really can't beat touching the old vintage figures.
The grading thing is a scam in my opinion. No thanks. I'll keep my money. MOC are nice to have protected though. I put mine in cases w/o grading them. Save the money and still save my cardback. I hear you, bro. Nothing beats playing with og Kenner. Or your SS figures for that matter ;)
I'm with you 100%, I have tons of Loose, MOC and MIB items which grade worthy many item 80+ condition, I actually will never buy graded stuff, paying almost twice when I can get a equally nice one for half the price, when I see very common loose toys graded to me its just rediculous, like a loose cloud car, dewback ect...
Completely agree with you man.. I personally feel like it is a waste of money and time.. most times if you want to sell these graded items, you won’t even get back the amount of money you spent on grading it.
I prefer purchasing used toys in general. To me, that’s the authenticity and passage of time of a loved and played with toy…..that’s what I value the most.
These old toys have a lot of history. It definitely runs deep. Many kids played with these toys that we buy nowadays. Passed thru many households and survived a lot of playtime. I hear you.
Only graded figure I have is a loose vinyl caped Jawa that I bought at auction a number of years ago. I bought it mostly to ensure that the vinyl cape Jawa was legit.
I've only got a few AFA graded. Mostly my prized possessions that were never carded like a pristine Blue Snag and an Early Bird Dark Blue R2D2. Not for investment purposes.... but to keep them nice and safe. These are going nowhere. THEY'RE MINE, ALL MINE! ;)
I do like the idea of protecting things in acrylic, but I consider collecting to be a significantly tactile experience. That’s part of the nostalgia for me, and therefore, I want to be able to remove things from the case from time to time.
great way to make money to advance the collection tbh...ive scored a couple rare POTF2 star wars figures and even at a 80 to grade i have made enough money on just those 3 figures to buy a couple 30+ figure lots on ebay(trying to collect all the base figures, then specialize/get variants from there) I never got "it" either till i found the right things to keep my eye out for to make it make sense
I’m not huge on grading but some of my rarer figures are graded and my blue snag is and like it’s a fragile figure so it’s extra protection but I put my carded figures in acrylic. I haven’t sent any figures in to get graded just have gotten some over the years. But grading with figures is the same as cards once graded if high it’s more
I think grading is ridiculous. It absolutely ruined the hobby. Ebay is flooded with over priced graded figures. Scalpers scooped these carded figures up, entombed them and then held them hostage from collectors who just wanted some childhood nostalgia. Plus, these figures and packages continue to age even in the acrylic. Collecting nostalgia is fun, not profit. My opinion. My rant. BTW, these grading companies are no more authorities than you or I. BTW your channel is great! Thank you.
I agree it's big business for scalpers they set the market with ridiculous prices but the worse are the eBay scalpers that buy all the new figures from retailers and put them on at exaggerated prices for instant profit and if you can't buy them from retailers because they are sold out you have to buy them from these parasites it kills it for genuine collectors
I like having both, a loose set and a loose graded set. As time goes on and other people besides the collectors start selling collections, there will be a lot of reproductions caught-up in the soup, unknowingly and knowingly. Add to that the Retro Collection accessories coming genuinely from Hasbro factories and the line is getting thinner and thinner. Getting items graded is a great way to display them and the perfect way to create family heirlooms. Obviously, work on a loose set first; then go graded
I overall buy loose only as I like to play with them from time to time, however, I am doing a graded run of the first 12. I like how you don’t get negative about how folks do their own thing, great videos!
I have nothing against grading, but I think the whole grading craze can make the fans and collectors who actually care about it look bad. The ones who want it graded are seemingly only in it for the money and the bragging rights. I'm not saying ALL. I don't mean to cast any dispersions on anybody who does get things graded. I think it would be interesting to see figures with play wear get graded. Now what? :) I see those figures as just as good. Those are the veterans, our heroes. They deserve respect also. I don't need someone to tell me what I have is special. I'm all for protecting and treating stuff right, but putting everything in a box you probably can't open later doesn't sound like my idea of a good time. I live my life behind glass to begin with. I heard the same thing, that it would take months to get your stuff back. EFF that. Quite honestly, I don't want ANYONE touching my shit. I'm that kind of girl. :) Thanks for the video
Grading doesn’t appeal to me neither does factory errors despite both being very expensive. I do like to see the occasional fig/vehicle etc in the Perspex cases though, but my overall collecting style and views on toys is pretty much the same as yours
Great video. I have no interest buying graded toys. I do have some graded comics. I'll buy hraded comics but I've never sent any comics in to be graded would cost to much shipping from Canada. I have 9ne graded hockey card.
Your videos have become Sunday Rituals. I Don't Do It... I Love It brother, Keep it Pure for all of us. When you buy something lose... You sound very sexy when you say that...
100% Yes. And anyone who disagrees with you is simply deluding themselves into denying that they've been scammed by auction houses who are in cahoots with grading companies. Its a full on tag team scam. GQJ is the best kind of collector out there. He looks after everything but displays it all for people to enjoy in his diorama style setups. The BEST way to display your collection.
I wouldn't get anything graded or buy graded, but I disagree. Grading has been going on for far longer than Star Wars has been around. I don't doubt people've gotten scammed, but this is very real. As long as everyone's following the same rules to the same game, I don't see the harm in it. I'm just not into it.
I hate graded figures. Might as well collect pictures of them, since you can't touch or enjoy them as they were meant to be enjoyed (by playing with them!).

To each their own, I say. If you need to preserve your stuff in a certain way, I can respect that. Absolutely.

May the force be with you, same I open everything
I agree with your philosophy of actually picking them up and touching them sometimes.
Right? Just makes sense to me.

Nostalgia and my love for Star Wars is the only reason I collect! 👊🏻

Truly they are to be treasured
Kenner treasures. 100%

Right on! Cheers.
As usual very well said,I agree 💯.
You know I just say how I feel, with no BS.
Completely agree with you man.. I personally feel like it is a waste of money and time.. most times if you want to sell these graded items, you won’t even get back the amount of money you spent on grading it.
Yikes! No thanks. Work too hard for my money to lose it stupidly.

Great collection I also have them and make them takk
Thank you!

I don’t dabble with graded stuff. But selling toys you don’t want to buy ones you do, just seems like the obvious path to take in this hobby. Amen.
I’m not huge on grading but some of my rarer figures are graded and my blue snag is and like it’s a fragile figure so it’s extra protection but I put my carded figures in acrylic. You must do what you feel is right, of course. - Ben Kenobi
As my cousin so eloquently put it, Grading: paying someone else to tell you your stuff is worth something.
That sums it all up quite nicely.
I think grading is ridiculous. It absolutely ruined the hobby. Ebay is flooded with over priced graded figures. To each their own. But grading is a hard pass for me, bud. Glad you enjoy the content!
100% agreed buds, I went through this fiasco with comic books, and it's an absolute racket.
@@Graham-J I completely agree. I rarely walk into a retail store and see a popular figure sitting on the shelf.
my star wars toys. i WILL find a way to take em with me. a melted down figures, reshaped kenner plastic coffin will do just fine.
Hahaha! Love to hear it!

Like I said in the video, you gotta do what you like. There is no wrong way to collect or display. I respect all decisions.
I overall buy loose only as I like to play with them from time to time, however, I am doing a graded run of the first 12. I like how you don’t get negative about how folks do their own thing, great videos!
@@robertfoster3197 I’m completely fine with what other collectors do. And thanks for watching!
Grading downgrades the item for many of us I think, but people can do whatever they want, even melt their figures in a vat of acetone.
LOL!!
I just had a bubble fall off the card when I moved it. It wasn’t a rare figure but still.
Ohh man! Dang....Truly sorry to hear that my man. My condolences.
