I always loved this one from Bananarama!
Siobhan Fahey, the short blonde-haired member of Bananarama went on to form the group "Shakespears Sister" in 1988. You guys played the song "Stay" about 7 months ago and really liked the video. She had black hair in that duo/group.
You're History was all over VH1 when I was a bartender in 1989
"Stay" made their saxophone player figurine fall down and break. LOL!
@@RandomGuyDan I think 'You're History' and 'Hello (Turn Your Radio On)' are my favourite Shakespears Sister tracks.
They both had black hair😉
siobhan had the best voice and the best dancer, the other two couldnt stand her
Every time this video came on MTV I would get up and do the dance routine with them. 💃🏽 Absolutely love this song. This brings back Great memories. ❤️Thank you for the review.
Sitting here at my desk PC and doing the dance moves... LOL!
Absolutely, it's the rules to jump about to this tune, even as a teenage boy back then I'd be the same, great fun, great cardio🤣👍
@@ReleaseTheQuackers 🤣🤣 Yes! 👏🏽
@@martindunstan8043 agreed.
I liked it at first but MTV OVER played the song, along with Sinaid (sp) O'Conner.
One of the best 80's covers. They took a good song and gave it punch.
The female singer of the shocking blues had a better voice than the knock of version from the singers of banana rama.
He voice was more unique.
The singers from the 80s sound very similar.
I loved when Bananarama did a song with Fun Boy Three - "It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)" Happy New Year ❣
Fun Boy Three w/Bananarama "It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)" !!! YES YES YES!!! I catch myself singing this one so often!
@@ReleaseTheQuackers All the time!
YES!!! And then some more Fun Boy Three: Too much, Too young and A Message to you Rudy!
@@bucknakedA Yes, I love "A Message to you Rudy" - by The Specials ❣
Love this cover song from Shocking Blue. Bannanarama did such good job. 😊😊😊Love Bananarama!!!😊😊😊😊
Did anyone else notice that 90% of the time, Jay closes his eyes and vibes to the music, when there’s a video right in front of him. Not this time. His eye were firmly glued to the screen, the whole time. LOL
I love both versions. They both bring some really cool sounds to the table. And I grew up to the Bananarama version, so I am partial to it, but truly enjoy the original.
Nice to see a positive comment about liking both instead of trashing Bananarama ❤🎵🎶
I remember doing the dance anytime the video came on. This song was huuuge in the 80s. The best time of my life.
I was so fascinated by the music video as a tween even though I didn't understand what they were singing. I never forgot it. This and Janet Jackson's Runaway are my absolute favorites.
Another 80's club banger that filled dance floors for months.
Great reaction! One of the best 80's songs, and successful remakes. Love the video and how the Bananarama ladies play all of the characters in the video. The woman in the devil suit is Siobhan Fahey, who also was the angel of death in the Shakespears Sister video Stay (which you have already reacted to)
A great cover to react that I know you will love is "Always On My Mind" by the Pet Shop Boys from 1988. A club classic!!!
Brilliant
Facts👍
Excellent choice!
1987
Defo. Their best song and I’m a huge fan
Club Nouveau- Lean On Me is a great raggae style cover of the classic Bill Withers song. It was huge in the USA and went all the way to #1 in 1987. You guys will love the funky sound and love for you to react to this great cover!
The original by Shocking Blue is awesome too. I love the singer's voice on the old one.
I think they did that one, just sayin'
Yes, Mariska Veres had a great voice. May she rest in peace.
@@FlamesCagneyYep.... They even said it like 3 times in this video lol
The B side of the 45 was great too.
The original by shocking blue is so much better than banarama
This was a staple at dance clubs in the late eighties. When this came on the floor was always packed. Great memories!
Bananarama STILL going after all these years!
It's all that potassium.
well 2/3 keren and sarah who were mates before the music.
I loved their album Viva from like 2010 ❤ especially the tracks Love Don't Live Here and Dumb Dumb Boy! Oh and their cover of S S S Single Bed!
These girls were all about having fun, and you can see it in all their videos.
Cheers guys, Paul.😁📀🎶❤️
Did you notice the singer on the right, Siobhan Fahey is also from a group you already checked out, *"Shakespears Sister"*
I will always and forever love Bananarama. You should check out Fun Boy 3's cover of, "It ain't what you do, it's the way that you do it." Fun Boy 3 was formed by Nev, Terry, and Lyn, when they left The Specials. Banarama sings alongside Tery Hall. Also, Terry cowrote "Out lips are sealed" with Jane Wiedlin from the Go Go's. FB3 did a great version of Our Lips are sealed. If you haven't checked out The Specials, you should. Two-tone Ska at its best! 💜💜💜
You can get all the way from the Specials in the 70s to Shakespeares Sister in the 90s through Bananarama.
The Specials split up and started Fun Boy Three, with the Bananarama girls as their backing vocals. The girls became Bananarama and then Siobhan split off to start Shakespeares Sister with Marcella Detroit.
It would be fun to have you see the progression by watching a Fun Boy Three video like "it aint what you do (its the way that you do it)".
Especially as you've already seen videos by all the other groups.
Gotta love the 80’s music, love this song!🔥🔥
Thanks for reacting Amber and Jay!👏👏👏
Smokey Robinson's "More Love" covered by Kim Carnes... I Will Always Love You" made famous by Whitney Houston was actually written and recorded by Dolly Parton in the early 70s.
Yaaay!!!! I've always loved how much fun they're having in this video! This came out the year I graduated high school...oh dear.
i always thought music was meant to be....musical, not sure what fun sounds like..is it a tangible i can hear? an unusual interesting beat? what exactly does fun sound like?
@@icmman7 i only said they were having fun in the video...a visual thing.
@@sunnybearbuds ahh ok got it, my bad i wasnt sure if fun could be heard given that the objective of music is to be heard.;)
Thanks for this reaction... Bananarama joined the 'Stock, Aitken and Waterman' factory that produced other names such as Dead or Alive, Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Divine, Hazel Dean and even some Donna Summer, to name a few. They were a 'hit making' studio from the late 80s, then it all dried up when the sound of music changed and got heavier etc. and moved direction. Still, they had some amazing songs for their time!
Venus and You Spin Me Round were both two of the biggest Hi-energy tunes back in the 80s
Bananarama is a really fun all girl group. I love this remake. It’s the version I know! It’s so catchy and fun!! I was in love with Keren Woodward. She is one of the most attractive female music artists of the 80s.
And recently divorced from Andrew Ridgely of Wham!
Is she the devil? Always had a crush on her...
@@electricavenuemusic9282oh really?! ! I need to call her 😊
Summer of '86 I danced to this at the clubs all summer long. Shy Boy and Robert DeNero's waiting are their best songs!
Similar grps: You have done Expose (but they have a catalogue), The Good Girls' (Motown Group), Cover Girls, "Because of you" "Show Me" , Me and Kim "Respectable" and "Showing out" Sweet Sensation "Im hooked on you" "take it while its hot". Seduction. Teen Dream (there are fun), Stacey and kimyo. The Jets and Five Star. En Vogue, Jade, SWV etc
Excellent cover!
Believe from Cher was covered by Adam Lambert at Kennedy Center Honors when they were honoring Cher he puts his own take on it that Cher loved
This song is the standard Stock-Aitken-Waterman production sound who domain england in the mids 80. another clear example is You spinme round of Dead or Alive.
J & Amber, you'll love their "Shy Boy", "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye" and
Fun Boy Three w/Bananarama "It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)" !!!
Bananarama w/Fun Boy Three- “Really Saying Something” !!!
Fun Boy Three w/Bananarama "It Ain't What You Do (It's the Way That You Do It)" !!! *YES YES YES!!!* I catch myself singing this one so often!
throw *Cruel Summer",* and *"Robert De Niro's Waiting..."* on the list 👍 Definitely think *"Shy Boy"* should be their next since it was their breakout song.
@@auscryptocurrency1162 "Shy Boy"! they mentioned they already did Cruel Summer.
@@surlechapeau ah ok I missed that bit. Cheers for the correction
The 80's were a great time to grow up!!!
The music was basically all dance music.
There's one arm movement from this video that became the thing to repeat in our own dancing. See the 4:36 and 5:14 mark (among other times)--it's like a vertical, interchanging, wave-type of motion. If you did it, inevitably, someone on the dance floor would see it and repeat it back to you. Fun stuff! Gosh, I miss those days at the clubs!
I love how amber bounces and moves to this song. You have to watch them do this in 2017. The ladies are so much more beautiful and so much better and they are all in their 60s now!! I love them so much!
When I heard this play on MTV I would knock people down to watch this video....I was in love with them...lol
Bananarama was SO much fun!
This song filled dance floors the length and breadth of Oz in the mid80’s!
There’s personal connections between Bananarama, Wham and Spandau Ballet, all great 80’s groups…..
Siobhan Fahey was the 'Angel of Death' in the song "Stay" from Shakespeares Sister that you [we all] liked so much.
They were an awesome band, loved the look, hair, clothes and most of all their up beat sound. Another great time to remember 👍
Great cover. This imo became the song that took Bananarama into the global stratosphere! It also launched the Stock/Aitken/Waterman sound that ould give us Rick Astley later. This song waa awesome to play in my all Synth band I was in back at university. There was also a male spoof version that friends and I wrote.
Now that you mention it, the male vocal at 5:29 sounds exactly like Rick Astley
Rick Astley lol
He did sing backup on this.
They asked SAW to arrange a version that sounded like Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round” which was huge at the time.
Global hit in the summer of 1987
Just by the way , I just saw an interview of Barry Gibb. He was asked what his favorite song was and he said “To Love Somebody “. It was one of his early ones.
I was around for the original’s release but THIS is the version that I hear in my mind when I think about this song. Huge in the 80’s.
"Bananarama" are the most successful female group of all time, even beating "The Supremes". My brother went to school with two of the women from this band and as a former music producer here in London when I was very young, I would often use the studios of Dave Stewart of the "Eurythmics" who is married to a member of this band. 😁🇬🇧
They are no longer married. Divorced in 1996. Dave married his current wife Anoushka Fisz in 2001.
Nothing beats the original by Dutch rockband from the 70's 'Shocking Blue', but I always liked this version as well.
The original was of course a complete rip-off of "The Banjo Song" by the Big Three, featuring "Mama" Cass Elliott.
Bananarama used fake instruments
@@MartijnHover Wrong, the lyrics are loosly based on 'Oh Susanna' a verrrrry old folk song and the music is somewhat lifted from Banjo Song which in itself is based on a different old song (can't remember which one) and modified by Tim Rose. But you're right that the original isn't truly Shocking Blue's although Robbie van Leeuwen did give it his personal touch and made ot to the popular song as the world got to know and love.
@@laziojohnny79 What the Big Three did with "Oh Susanna" was called an "arrangement" and Robbie van Leeuwen just stole that arrangement for "Venus". A "personal touch" was what the Big Three did with Oh Susanna, not what Robbie van Leeuwen did with their song. Which was just plagiarism. In this day and age he'd be sued for it. And he'd lose. 😀
Pet Shop Boys cover of "Always on My Mind" is my favorite cover song ever.
Always heard this at the clubs in the 80s and 90s , dance floor packed !!
A great version of this song!! There were very long versions of this song played in clubs back then.
Ahhh the Campy Goodness of early MTV.🎉
❤❤❤
An absolute classic.
Stock Aitken and Waterman were the 80s in the UK - brilliant music producers - there music is still played today 🎉
Bananarama also appeared in Eurythmics video “Who’s That Girl” Siobhan Fahey would later marry Dave Stewart of Eurythmics. That is a VERY interesting 😉 video to check out.
If they had never met, she would never have left Bananarama, in my opinion.
My favorite version of Venus!
apparently- they were the biggest party band of the 80s- drank EVERYONE under the table!
Old enough to remember both versions, and love them both.
Same. Early Gen X.
@@kbusby4824 Very late Boomer here...
This was Bananarama's only US # 1 hit to date. The song topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart twice. The original by Shocking Blue topped the chart for one week on February 7th 1970 becoming the group's only US chart topper. The Bananarama's cover topped the Hot 100 chart for one week on September 6th 1986. This is one of nine songs to date to top the Hot 100 chart in two separate versions by different artists. Bananarama was the first British female group to top the US chart out of a total of two to date. The only other British female group to achieve this since was Spice Girls with Wannabe which topped the Hot 100 chart for four weeks beginning February 22nd 1997.
Duran Duran did a whole album of covers called THANK YOU which they covered artists & bands that they felt inspired them or felt like made a big contribution to their sounds. Most notably they did a cover for LOU REED's song - "Perfect Day" and Lou said he felt it was the best cover of any of his songs by any group or artist. That is a big win. They also did covers of
- PUBLIC ENEMY - "911's is a Joke"
- GRAND MASTER FLASH - "White Lines"
- LED ZEPPELIN - "Thank You"
And the Ramones did an album of all cover songs done psychedelically called Acid Eaters. I think their version of Out Of Time is better than the Rolling Stones'.
you may recognise Siobahn Fahey who sang the 'devil' part in Shakepsear's Sister "Stay"
She looked good in red in Venus.
I liked this version too…I also liked The Bangles version of “Hazy Shade of Winter” better than the original
Totally
I've never been able to decide which one of these girls is the best looking. All three are gorgeous.
I ❤️💃 to their (bananarama) song with na.. nananaaa hey hey hey Goodbye 😂😂😂🎉🎉 i just ❤ the band ok 😂😂😂
Great cover....great song by Bananarama.
LOVED hearing this version in the night clubs!! SO FUN to dance to!!
Another great video by them is “I heard a rumor “.
Yes - 80's If you like this try "Iko Iko" by the Belle Stars. Another great cover is "I Drove All Night" by Cyndi Lauper.
When the girls went to Stock, Aitken and Waterman to produce the song, they told them they wanted it to sound much like "You spin me round (like a record)" by Dead or Alive.. and it's quite evident
I loved this video so much growing up. It was the first one where it was like, girls can look at sexy, scantly clad guys too and not be ashamed of it., and have fun with it too. I was just rolling into puberty when this came out so... yeah, watched it a lot. 🤣
If you haven't listened to ABBA's Happy New Year this is the perfect time.
HAPPY NEW YEAR TO Y'ALL AND THE WHOLE CREW. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER GREAT YEAR OF MUSIC AND LAUGHS. MAY YOU HAVE HEALTH AND HAPPINESS IN THE NEW YEAR.
Grossly underrated band.
Andrew Ridgeley from wham was with Keren for 27 years, and Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics was married to Siobhan Fahey for almost 10 years. Siobhan left and formed Shakespeare's Sister
Bananarama is still going strong. You should react to some of their newer stuff like "Masquerade" and "Stuff Like That" or a little bit older ones like "Love Don't Live Here", "Love Comes", "Look on the Floor (Hypnotic Tango)" or "Move in My Direction". ❤❤❤
Everything Bananarama did is Great, so I love this! But also love the original by Shocking Blue too! PS- Just checked, but You Guys should also try Frankie Avalon's version of Venus... completely different sound... dreamy, and it's GREAT too! Great Reaction, You Guys!
different song as well.
@@icmman7 Yes, I didn't do a good job of explaining that! :)
fun fact: Siobhan Fahey (on the far right when the three are lined up together) went on to form Shakespeare's Sister with Marcella Detroit. I think you reacted to 'Stay' by them.
Three great 80's songs (not covers) with very "80's" videos : Duran Duran "Wild Boys ", Rick Springfield "Bop til You Drop", and Kate Bush "Big Sky" ❤
I agree with the first 2. Don't know the last one
This cover was also part of the soundtrack from “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion” (starring Lisa Kudrow from “Friends”). Such a fun movie and a banger of a soundtrack! I wore out the soundtrack CD!
I love you guys for helping younger generations discover the great joy of 80's music!
Love this group. Had such a crush on Keren Woodward (dark hair) when I was in high school. This was a great cover and video and was a big hit for them and a big club hit.
Check out - "I Heard a Rumour", "Love in the First Degree", "Robert Deniro's Waiting", "
They also did a great cover of the Beatles’ “Help”. It was a charity single for Red Nose Day that they did with a little help from the very funny comedy duo French & Saunders.
I believe there was a version with and one without F&S… not sure. They were definitely in the music video. Either way, a cracking song!
Saw them sing this live - very good , it's a crowd pleaser . Happy new year to you
Bananarama was in the "Do They Know It's Christmas" production.
They were produced by Dave Stewart, who performed with Annie Lennox and Candy Dulfer.
Like the sax? You MUST listen to Candy Dulfer.
I really loved this song when it came out - still one of the best cover songs!
❤I really love your cover days🎉 maybe you can rewatch Band Aid (Do they know it's Christmas) this time you will recognize Bananarama for sure
"LOVE IN THE FIRST DEGREE" by

you will love this
1980s song!!!!
their music video
for
"LOVE IN THE FIRST DEGREE" is so
MUCH FUN
I did not know that this was a cover. My friends and I would dance the heck out of this.
I just LOVE both versions. Great song. Siobhan Fahey on the right was also the Angel Of Death in Stay by Shakespeares Sister.
i found banarama to be a formulated pack of average singers, i dont get the attraction
I get your meaning. But for some reason , I saw the point of them being bland and with zero harmonies..@@icmman7
@@jonnno243 pretty much sums them up.
@@jonnno243 ever hear that god awful remake of hooked on a feeling by blue suede? completely phukked up the song but people still liked it wtf? these girls remind me of that kinda sheeit.
THIS WAS A HUGE CLUB HIT-ALWAYS FILLED THE DANCE FLOOR. CHECK OUT THEIR COVER OF THE DOOBIES' LONG TRAIN RUNNING-IT'S FLAMECO STYLE! ALSO CHECK OUT THEIR FIRST HIT HE WAS REALLY SAYING SOMETHING, ROBERT DENIRO' S WAITING, NA NA HEY HEY, SHY BOY. IT AIN'T WHAT YOU DO.
Hi, you two! It's Andrew Erroch fae Paisley in Scotland here. This is pretty standard stuff from the Stock, Aitken and Waterman catalogue of the time, including massive hits from Kylie Minogue, Dead or Alive and themselves in their own name. The best of their own was probably 'Road Block'. You would love that. Æx
This video came on a lot back in the day when I went dancing at the clubs with my friends. Everyone jumped on the dance floor when this came on.
I love Bananaramas cover version,it was huge in the clubs back in the day the camp over the top video and song,I still love this one now it has so many great memories for me of clubbing with my friends back in the day(Matt) Happy new year to you both
I like both of them equally and both versions hit #1 on Billboard Top 100 in the states. Speaking of covers, react to Poison's version of "Your Mama Don't Dance". The original was done by Loggins & Messina. David Lee Roth's version of California Girls, originally done by the Beach Boys. Thanks.😎
Great suggestion ❤
Both the original by Shocking Blue and this cover by Bananarama went to #1. Very unusual!
I do believe you guys did Shakespire sisters "Stay" . Shakespire sisters is two of the girls from Banarama.
This song was huge in the
80' s. Also the bananrama girls were also in Do they know it's Christmas by Band Aid.
Such a fun song. Couldn't escape it that summer! Thanks for the trip down memory lane!
Can totally picture Amber in full 80s outfit on the dance floor to this one 😂
Great covers:
Got to Get You Into My Life - Earth, Wind & Fire's cover of The Beatles classic.
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - Elton John's cover of another Beatles gem.
Pinball Wizard - Elton John's cover of The Who classic.
Come Together - Aerosmith's cover of yet another Beatles classic.
Ticket to Ride - The Carpenters cover of another Beatles hit.
Live and Let Die - Guns and Roses cover of the Paul McCartney and Wings rocker.
Fantastic suggestions ❤😊
