Thank you loopop, 6 years later and I finally ordered the mk3, this video was one of many that has convinced me to buy the groovebox, am planning primarily on making industrial techno. Cheers🎉
Bus powered brightness is not bright enough for the MK3 to work comfortably in (summer) daylight with a laptop to be honest. In other words, I wouldn't say it's really a feature that makes it truly portable unless you're only working in the 'darker' times of a day anyway.
PHeMoX try doing it with Push 2. Either way, if you're doing a live set in the park, for example, I'm not reaching for an MK3 regardless. It's a studio champ tho
Just watched this again. FIrst time I dd was before I got the MK3 and now it's sometime after and I appreciate this even more. Nice piece of non-hysterical work. Well done.
Johnny Goodyear this thing been sitting on my desk for three months. Catching dust yesterday I decide to connect again and man I remember why I loved it. So now I’m back here watching this video I love my MPCX but this maschine workflow is really smooth
THANK YOU FOR PLAYING SOMETHING THAT WASNT HIP HOP! It give more detail on what types of genres that can be made with it. too often I find most of these 16 pad like controllers and workstations to be primarily use for making hip hop, trap, ect.
MuzikFreq choice of genre has nothing to do with hardware. If you look at official videos of the developers they hardly ever introduce their product with hip hop
Best review i've seen on the mk3 so far. Excellent camera work, editing, and quality of tutorial. Also, does this have the ability to set the pads to only play notes in a certain key?
I love my S4 for traktor, so I figure I'll like this just as much. The build quality of NI is excellent. I wonder if the studio will get similar upgrades. I really like the standalone feature. Can you close your mac and still use the maschine?
Matt S the build is excellent. As long as you can make it so your Mac doesn’t go to sleep you can close the lid.... I haven’t tried looking for a setting like that
Wow👌!realy, WOW! you are the first one here on YT i heard spelling out Maschine right!!!now its proven, you take this hole topic very serious!what makes you to a really believable „advisor“/reviewer etc.! Please keep on being so conscientious!best regards!
I still think the live outruns this in a live situation only because I’m not feeling the laptop in a club but other than that the Maschine is sweet. For the in house studio the MPCX is King. The studio I work in has all three so I’m happy
Im REALLY looking forward to getting this next month!!! Cant believe i did not get it earlier, instead of buying both the Electribe 2 synth and sampler... I really like them - but they are also VERY limited compared to the "Komplete 11 Ultimate" plugins that i got on my computer. I would need a LOT of hardware synths and samplers and effects and stuff, for it to not be limited compared to my computer... I love that analog sound - but i can make "analog emulations" on my software synths, so... Maschine MK3 is gonna be the best thing i ever got, since "Komplete 11 Ultimate" :P
thibo sciarrotta thanks! Maybe in the future - I will certainly be doing more MK3 stuff but the coming several weeks are already booked with other video ideas ... I really appreciate the comment though, so thanks!
Hey Loopop! You mention at the end of this video that you have some more interesting videos regarding Maschine but I haven’t been able to find them (except for the comparison to Push2). Thanks and really appreciate the vids!
The EDM you had as a template for your demonstration was actually tasty asf. I'm not the most immediate fan of EDM...but I really enjoyed this one, especially re the ' lock states'.You remind me of why F#Min is such a fun key sig.
Been hanging onto my MK2 for years. NI just had a killer deal and while this is already liek 5 years old, I just got the MK3. Better than the MK2 in every way imaginable.
good couple of upgrades but i still prefer the maschine studio, would like some options to save or start new project from the hardware instead of having to do it through the cpu great vid 👍
Great presentation with excellent camera quality, shots and editing. One of the best reviews on this i've seen......what did u mean by u can't record full vocals?
Thanks! I meant that you can’t record an entire vocal track across the length of a song. You can still record vocals as long as they are confined within the length of the current loop.
I got my Maschine mk3 for about 6 month now and I just watched your video. I learned things I even didn’t know about my hardware! Haha excellent review as always! I know you reviewed both, so: with MPC one on the market, do you think Maschine Mk3 still worth?
Thanks! I can’t answer this quickly - it deserves its own video..... Maschine isn’t standalone though, so that’s certainly an advantage One has. Still, that doesn’t make Maschine not worth taking a look at....
Nice video! Can you pleas do a video focusing on DAW integration for the MK3? Could you, for example, record individual tracks for all 16 pads in a group?
If I wasn't buying my Octatrak mkii I'd buy this based on your review. I'm so tempted to just cave in but I can still buy this before Xmas. So glad I didn't buy the Push.
Bought Maschine mk3, it is a little confusing switching from Ableton to Maschine to be honest, I wish there is hover tooltip for Maschine just like Ableton, to teach basic concepts and help new users ramp up quickly!
Such a terrible shame locks cannot be recorded as part or an arrangement. To me this is where Maschine falls down over the Akai’s. The Akai will allow you to record arrangements, mutes, solos, locks on the fly. Don’t get me wrong I prefer Maschine (sold my MPC X for it) but I think NI get a little confused as to what the unit is - a live performance tool, a studio tool, a bit of both ? Allow full automation and recording of all functions on a time line and they would have an absolute winner in this product. Why they can develop that is beyond me.........
FullFledged2010 Not to sound like a jerk, but what are you referring to after the update? I have an MK1 and I'm really thinking about getting the MK3. And so far everything that I've seen, it's going to be a huge progression forward lol so any info would great!!
I've had a Maschine MK1 for a long time and I've thought about updating my equipment. Do you think it's worth the price to update from MK1 to MK3? I've noticed some problems with the buttons in my MK1 and the smart strip and bigger pads in the MK3 are very interesting.
I'd like to know more about the chords side of it; where you mention the pre-programmed chord patterns at 7:13, are there many of these chord progressions available, or just 1 or 2? And the other thing is can you set your own chords quickly & easily? Thanks for any advice.
Nowadays you can buy Maschine MK3 for ~340 used or refurbished from NI, it's the same price as a novation Circuit or a Seqtrak and you can't really compare the power and sound quality. Actually Maschine Mikro for ~120 used is still way better than those groveboxes, as long as you have a decent laptop or you use your main workstation. As a full DAW it's bad, it's not as good as Ableton or Logic, but as a grove box / idea pad it's fun and convenient now.
I bought Machine 1 the day it came out and never found anything I couldn't do with my controller keyboard and Ableton. Now a couple of iterations down the line, I still don't see anything I couldn't do with my controller keyboard and Ableton. Certainly Ableton with Push is where they are going with this but not there yet by far.
this and the Kontrol mk2 are fucking beast. I just ordered both btw I grew up on ReBirth and the Phat Boy controller. Those were the beginning of all this. Show your age by giving me a WOOT WOOT if you know what I'm talking about!
Hello Loopop I am from the future, having just arrived in my cardboard time machine. It is summer 2019 and NI have released a standalone battery operated version with further enhanced screen facilities, an incorporated quality microphone, and all the goodies already onboard the old mk3. It's loads easier to use than the MPC Live.
Just upgraded, well, I don't know if anyone will say downgrade, but had the Studio, and it is so bulky, haha, been having it for three years, awesome device, but just love the MK3 new features, and the minimalist aesthetic to it as well.
If a MK3 and a Maschine Studio were the same price would it still be better to go with the MK3? I've been interested in getting something from this line, but am not sure about all the pros and cons of each. Thanks in advance if you reply.
Can this be connected to Boss RC505 MK2 loop station? So that we can make beats etc with this and then loop them with loop station five channels and add effects there? :)
I heard you can’t use your headphone in mobile mode like can I seat on my couch and make beats with this while I’m babysitting with head phones or need speakers ?
Hi Loopop, ...I play a lot of Berlin school, and Ambient, chill, ( both uptempo & downtempo) but not hip hop or techno. I am looking for a drum machine that is not oriented towards hip hop, EDM or any kind of dance oriented music. Rather I am looking for a drum machine that lends itself towards Tangerine Dream type of compositions and artists like that.....any suggestions please? Thank you!
Were in the same dilemma. Bought the Maschine mk3. What a fantastic piece of gear! Many more capabilities than the Digitakt, and great for drumming (especially if your a drummer!). I bring my laptop everywhere anyway, so the standalone capability doesn't really matter compared to the many more features you get with Maschine. And the software/interface i really brilliant, once you get your head around it. Took me a day or two!
Can I use it without a computer, like a Roland’s groovebox? Can I record a sample and then chop it in the maschine? 707 costs a 900€, maybe buy the Maschine mk3 for 530€ instead? Thank you!
Great work as usual. I am watching this in April 2020, but this vid review is from Sept, 2017. My question is: do you yourself own and use the Maschine mk3, and would you still recommend it today? I am looking to buy one, possibly, out of all these type of controllers, is this still your favorite for the price, functions etc? I have several Elektrons, SP404sx, but want a DAW-type unit that is easy to use and understand and is almost a standalone like the Octatrack, (as you described here- that you hardly need to look at the computer screen). I dont own any controllers except the small Keystep. I see the MPC Live is similar but costs nearly 2x the Mk3. Thanks.
Thanks and yes, I still own it, and yes, if you don't mind a computer nearby, I believe it's the ultimate groovebox. You get a user interface of a standalone device with endless content and power that easily beats any standalone machine.
I' m very undecided and in difficulty choosing between the mk3 and the digitakt! I found a "same price deal" but even if I'm intrigued by the elektron workflow and curious about the combo with the circuit (only synth groovebox I have at the moment), witch I think compensates with poliphony and more live friendly functions the limitations of digitakt, and intrigued by the minimal setup with the two hardware, I' m afraid of loosing, spending the same money a vast realm of possibility choosing digitakt instead of the maschine... but also I' m afraid that even if I like using computer for stuff digitakt would make me more focused on music experimentation and away from a deep in music meditation.. but for the same price loosing polyphony, all those capabilities, those pads, all that stuff... I can't make a choice, what do you think about this difficult situation? Would the maskine pair well with the circuit? Would it be good for sound experimentation and production? Is there something more digitakt is capable of in this respect? I need them also as audio interfaces, I tend to ambient and idm stuff but like to vary, and I use ableton at the moment Thanks for the great videos and the competence and hope you come up with an intelligent and ponderated opinion about this stalemate situation ahaha Cheers Steeve, a fan of yours
Thank you loopop, 6 years later and I finally ordered the mk3, this video was one of many that has convinced me to buy the groovebox, am planning primarily on making industrial techno. Cheers🎉
Enjoy!
You actually can record long vocals/instrument takes now using clips instead of patterns. That was a huge update for me.
Finally someone showing the difference between bus powered and ac power in terms of brightness. Thank you
Bus powered brightness is not bright enough for the MK3 to work comfortably in (summer) daylight with a laptop to be honest.
Well done.

I own a second-hand Mk2 and this video, even 5 years after the making, invited me to shop around for the Mk3. Thank you.
Whoa! That lock setting isn't discussed in other videos - as of Dec 2021. As I just bought a MK3 for the first time, I thank you!
Dude you fucked me up with the "if you're from the future" bit at the end hahahahaha. Great review!
I love your videos man! Not the first time your videos helped me select good gear
THANK YOU FOR PLAYING SOMETHING THAT WASNT HIP HOP! It give more detail on what types of genres that can be made with it. too often I find most of these 16 pad like controllers and workstations to be primarily use for making hip hop, trap, ect.

MASCHINE is everything.
Best reviewer/teacher for this stuff.
That was some really chill music lol
Got my pre order in, I'm double sold now.. thanks for the review 👍
Really useful review. It is very tempting. Helped me decide that this is better for me than Maschine Studio.
Best review i've seen on the mk3 so far. Excellent camera work, editing, and quality of tutorial. Also, does this have the ability to set the pads to only play notes in a certain key?
Matt S thanks ;) and yes - it supports scales
I love my S4 for traktor, so I figure I'll like this just as much. The build quality of NI is excellent. I wonder if the studio will get similar upgrades. I really like the standalone feature. Can you close your mac and still use the maschine?
Matt S the build is excellent. As long as you can make it so your Mac doesn’t go to sleep you can close the lid.... I haven’t tried looking for a setting like that
definitely looking at that NI order page, and going for the upgrade ~
Best review over there, thank you
Great review and demonstration, thank you. Clear and easy to understand.
Wow👌!realy, WOW!

I’m from 2020:) thnx 4 the vid
Was going to buy an mpc live, but this is far better for live performance.
me too, but it seems like the workflow outbeats it imensely and is so intuitive. that over the portability in stand alone mode of the live rly..
I still think the live outruns this in a live situation only because I’m not feeling the laptop in a club but other than that the Maschine is sweet. For the in house studio the MPCX is King. The studio I work in has all three so I’m happy

I love my maschine mk3 love its looks feel, it’s fun and easy to play , I love how light it is it’s easy to carry and be portable
Hey Loopop! You mention at the end of this video that you have some more interesting videos regarding Maschine but I haven’t been able to find them (except for the comparison to Push2). Thanks and really appreciate the vids!
Dax Gramuglia sure look for my 2.7 update and maschine jam videos. I do want to get back to maschine as well!
Gr8 and Useful Review, Thank U Sir.
I JUST GOT THE MK3 TODAY, NOW DOWNLOADING THE SOFTWARE, THEN I CAN GET STARTED ON IT
Great video. Thanks!
The EDM you had as a template for your demonstration was actually tasty asf. I'm not the most immediate fan of EDM...but I really enjoyed this one, especially re the ' lock states'.You remind me of why F#Min is such a fun key sig.
Glad you noticed it!
I came back here for the template song again...is the full version track available to stream anywhere? It reminded me of the Chris Micali days
Would love to see in-depth tutorials from you. Would pay for tutorials for machine and Jupiter XM.
In case ya'll didn't know, Lock Snapshots and Macros are available in the Mk2 hardware - I just checked.
Good job .Great review.
Yep Nice Review 👍 Thanks 😊 I'm working with the MK2 but lookin to upgrade 😉 I subbed

Awesome review. Will you be releasing those projects for free/purchase for anyone looking to learn how you set everything up?
sodaJ3RK thanks very much for the kind words. I tried to keep it simple so most of what you hear is the standard demo projects that come with the MK3
Thanks for the video! How does the build quality compare to a push 2?
L.A. Break thanks! both are excellently built - feel very sturdy. MK3 is a bit smaller and lighter.
I found standalone Machine + too expensive and want to buy MK3. What’s your thoughts on taking MK3 in 2021?
Thnx bro

Michael Rhodes - c3ns0r gl!tc# thanks! The song was created using one of the factory projects
Do I need a computer to use it? Can I use it with just studio monitors? Can I sample sounds at different bits (8, 16, 24, 32)?
Can this be connected to Boss RC505 MK2 loop station? So that we can make beats etc with this and then loop them with loop station five channels and add effects there? :)
Want to get one. But going to lose my job soon. :"( so if i don't get fire. Then its on my list
did you end up getting fired?
Native should do a stand-alone and take out Akai's MPC. Akai's slippin!
Your prayers have been heard, apparently.
Hound Takeshi not really, it’s not exactly standalone
@@elderchildren I mean NI did announce Maschine+ couple o' days ago which IS stand alone.
Mpc model X is still king. Vast functionality. Machine will have to bring the house down to take it out.
Ye your prayers answered for the tidy sum of £1100
are chords arranged according to a scale or does it only show minors, and another option as majors and so on?
I heard you can’t use your headphone in mobile mode like can I seat on my couch and make beats with this while I’m babysitting with head phones or need speakers ?
of course you can't; because you're not supposed to make beats with headphones when babysitting
why are the buttons so over saturated? are the maschine buttons actually illuminated with round circles like that inside them?
No it’s a camera thing
@@loopop thanks!
Can you record the music into the computer melody drums and samples etc, then record vocals over the top in a second take?
Can i use with midi samples ^^

what's the sample @6:00 ? is there a drake song or something that sounds like that??
It's probably a song he put together.
W O W !
When you say you cant record long vocals to your sounds. does that mean you cant record a 4 to 6 minute lead vocal on this machine ? and if so why ?
Things have changed since this video - check out the new clips feature
Can you record those those snapshots, or is that only for live production?
I was going to buy a Digitakt... now I'm not sure...???
