- In this video I will be comparing my Wen scroll saw to my Dewalt scroll saw. I will be sharing the pros and the cons of these saws in my own opinion. In this video I will give you the basic idea of how to load a scroll saw blade into each saw. We will also cut out a simple flower together. Stay tuned until the end for a tip to change the performance of any saw!

I have the Dewalt like you and I love the knob you made. great idea vs a pliers. I guess my weekend project is now planned. Big thanks
Much easier for me, good luck!😊
Thanks for the detailed comparison for newbies.
Glad it was helpful!
Appreciate your excellent video comparing the different scroll saws
Thank you, and thanks for watching!😊
I enjoy reading comments and learning what others think of different tools. I have had my Dremel scroll saw for about 20 years, probably have 1000 hours on it, and love it. I had a chance to buy a barely used Dewalt several years ago so thought I would "upgrade". Although it is a nice saw, I did not like it and sold it within weeks. Compared to my Dremel, I found it miserable to change blades. There was no dust collection. Also, my Dremel will cut thicker wood. I am sad that Dremel hasn't made a scroll saw in years and when I eventually have to replace it, there are few options without spending $1200 to $1500.
Great video, thanks! I purchased a Harbor Freight one as my first scroll saw a couple of months ago, as you say you did. I'm already looking at upgrading!
Awesome! Did you find the blade adapters on the HF saw helpful, or are you only using pinned blades? I couldn't get the adapters to work for pinless blades.
Thank you for making this video for us that are trying to decide which brand of scroll saw to purchase, very helpful to me when making my decision..
P. S. Went with the Wen. The money I saved went towards another power tool that I also wanted to aquire, and because of your video I now have 2 tools to help me in my new shop. Thanks very much again
I'm glad I could be helpful!😊
I'm on my SECOND DW788 while I got my first one sent to the shop for maintenance. It took awhile in the shop and I needed a scroll saw so I ordered a second one. I sold the first one to my neighbor a couple of years ago and he hasn't used it yet! Bummer! I also bought an "arm lift" for mine which is a great help changing project holes or changing blades. Two thumbs up for the DW788!
I love my Dewalt 😊
Wow!!! What an amazing video.. just unbelievable.. love it!!!!
Thank you so much💗
Great review thanks
done and done..picking up my DeWalt tomorrow off Craigslist can't wait
🙌 That's great!
Great in depth review
Thank you!
thanks for the info - I just received the Wen a week ago and have only make one cut with it - bought it for better and more accurate cuts then my jig saws for cutting wood and plastic. - my hand-held scroll saw is over 50 years old and harder to control -
Your welcome and I hope you enjoy your new scroll saw😊
excellent review! thank you!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is a very in depth comparison! I’m team yellow here (dewalt)
Thank you😊
I'm not much of a scroll sawer, my Dremel saw is buried under a pile of treasures in the garage but I did enjoy your video. I too have trouble tightening small winged screws and while the hex bolt conversion may look clunky to some, I dig it and may copy it in the future. And I totally agree that a good blade can make a world of difference in speed of cut and quality of finish.
Thank you! It saved alot of headache for me.
They say scroll saws are one of the safest power tools you can get. That is one big reason why I got my own. I need a little finesse too because I am looking at shaping some custom chess pieces. Using the 3D cutting method with my chosen wood the scroll saw is ideal for this kind of work. They have some good tutorials and books on carving some wood chess pieces and construction of chessboards with scroll saws. That is also a reason why I chose a scroll saw. They are not so bad. They just need a little practice to learn how to use correctly.
This is the info we need.
Thank you for watching, and I'm glad you got needed info😊
I used to use my dewalt for hours. I added a foot pedal like a sewing machine. The best addition ever. I did many portrait style with intricate cutting and found inserting the blade from the top down faster guess it’s how you learn thing. I also own the hegner saw and prefer my dewalt.
I'm happy to hear that because I didn't know if it was worth it. I need to get a pedal! I can't decide on a toggle or deadman style though. I tried inserting my blade that way and it wasn't working for me.
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns I have a deadman, I put it on a small footstool so I could reach it. I sit on a high stool. You’ll love it. I sewed a lot so the transition was easy. I can’t imagine cutting without. Slow your speed and move up Have fun
Oh, good idea. I like to sit on a stool too. Thank you!
I never thought of using toothbrush holders for blades! I’ll have to pick some up this week!
😄
Thanks
I'm a big Delta fan. I had a Delta 2 speed 16" scroll saw that I bought 25 years ago and it was a head of it's time. You would of LOVED it! Model Model 40-560. NO vibration what so ever, super fast blade changing, faster than anything on the market today. Had to sell all my large power tools as we downsized and sold our home 2 years ago. Anyways, the Delta saw has some of the same features as the DeWalt, only $100 cheaper.
Sounds nice!
I have that exact same scroll saw...the 40-560C (C means made in Canada). The one thing I don't have is the hold down foot.(no idea what happened to it! lol) Unfortunately they don't make parts for this saw, but otherwise I'm quite happy with it.
My wife and I are looking for a new scroll saw. Thanks for the review.
Thank you 👍👍
Welcome 👍
I can not afford a Dewalt. So I got a cheaper WEN 3921. Now it is not the absolute best one out there. But it is not as big as some other models out there, and it costs a lot less. It does have a vibration issue, but it can easily be fixed. And you should really not go over 2 inch thick wood in the soft wood department. And less than that with hardwoods. But I am a beginner and do not want hardwood yet. So the WEN I got will work fine for my intentions. The type of scroll saw you should buy is the kind that suits your needs and your budget best.
Absolutely!
Like the channel name..❤ thanks or very interesting video
Thank you Madame.🎉
Your welcome
herramientas o maquinarias muy grandes para espacios tan pequeños
Yes. I make the most out of the space I have. 😊
I bought the Wen for a temporary replacement as my my Delta had to take a trip to the scroll saw hospital…the difference is unbelievable and frustrating!
Sounds terrible! Coming from the Harbor Freight saw, the Wen was good for me at that time. Only because the blade changes were easier. Now that I have my Dewalt the Wen felt like a pain to change a blade out.😬 I hope your Delta makes it back sooner then later!
Great job with features of both. Like to see a yin/yang $/$$$ comparison. I have always had trouble with tight turns with blades snapping and burning of the wood from friction. Can you please tell me what blades you are using for such tight and effortless turns. I use pinned blades. Much appreciated.
I use modified geometry blades by Pegas. They are pinless blades. They are amazing!!
Nice vid, thanks!
Your welcome, thank you for watching 😊
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns where and what brand blades do you use
@Danny Flanery They are Pegas modified geometry blades. I bought a variety pack off Amazon to see if I liked them. Now I buy my most used sizes from bearwood.com because I could not find them on Amazon in a bulk pack.
@Danny Flanery I also have a link in the description for my most used size which is #5. Sometimes they are out of stock on Amazon.
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns do you prefer pinned or pinless
👍
my brand new Wen just crapped the bed the engine just stopped working had it for a couple of months used it a few times, it is a piece of junk blower barely blows the wood holder always falls down onto your project, and have fun putting on pinless blades it is a nightmare and small pieces get cought in the opening, Just bought the Dewalt dw 788 hope it proves to be more reliable,
You will be happy with it 😊
Buy a Used Dewalt 788. Craigslist $200-250 I’ve seen. I got mine for $300 but it was practically brand new. People buy scroll saws and use em one or twice then sell it. Once you fall in love with scrolling you want the best
100% 😊
Sorry, Wen. I need ready and constant access to the lower blade holder. When I am sawing, I change out blades every 3-4 minutes. I don't have time to fiddle-fudge around with access panels. I own several Wen tools that I love, but you're not gonna replace my RBI Hawk!
I have the DeWalt and Pegas scroll saws
Nice! What types of things do you make?
Mostly crafts and painted signs.
I used to be a tool demonstrator for Delta and Dewalt machinery. When demonstration the Dewalt scrollsaw I would stand our $1 coin (Loonie) on edge while running the machine. Hours later it would still be standing on edge. NONE of the other machines could do this.
Amazing!
The Dewalt I have has severe vibration issues.
@@nperson😊😊😊 Stop lying. Nobody believes u😊
What brand blades would you recommend for 1/8" brass? Thank You!
I'm not sure, I don't have any experience cutting metals.😊
I believe my Dad had a dust collection system add on for his scrollsaw He also had the dewalt.
Do all Wen scroll saws use pin or pin less blades if not what model do you have? I now have a Ryobi saw that uses only pin blades and I want to use the round blades.
I am not sure about them all, but the model of my Wen scroll saw is 3922. Thank you for watching!😊
Can you take it apart to show us how to oil it
Interested in the Dewalt. But i can pickup a Harbor Freight scroll saw right now for a lot less. What might i be missing.
I used the Harbor Freight saw for a short time. The vibration was actually less then the Wen. The great thing about Dewalt is that there is not much vibration. It's so heavy. My biggest issue with the Harbor Freight one was that I could not use pinless blades. It came with adapters, but they were useless. I do detailed pieces and need to use pinless blades. There are also better quality and more selection for pinless blades. I also struggled with tightening the Harbor freight tension knob. That was a me issue, though. I struggle tightening with my fingers. I hope this helps. The Harbor freight saw wasn't bad. I feel like it depends what you want to make and how much you will be using it. I am a huge fan of the Dewalt. I also use it alot. Hope this helps!!
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns I really appreciate it. I’m mainly a Dewalt user. But scroll saws would be new to me. And I really don’t want to have 2 scroll saws. Thank you.
My tool experience is with...first, a 16" Craftsman using pin style blades. Clunky and I was afraid it would bring the building down by vibration. Next was a Sakura (now PS Wood). I used that saw until I wore out the bronze bushings that secure the moving arms to the solid frame, and that after 15 years of solid use. Added the quick change kit just before it's near terminal demise. I may still fix it. Now I have a RBI Hawk. I like it fine. Just a little less vibe than the Sakura, but the clincher is electronic speed control vs the five speed belted pulleys on the Sakura.
The cheap saws are just that...cheap. Mostly I feel they are uncomfortable and far to vibratory to operate effectively. The pin style blades are so big and unwieldy as to render them only marginally better than a corded jigsaw. If you own one of those, go visit someone you know who has a mid-level saw...pinless blades, EVS, quick change upper blade clamp. You will be hooked for life!
I have had the opportunity to spend 15 minutes on a DeWalt. I think it's at the top of the mid-level saws. I wouldn't be embarrassed to say I owned one. But no matter how you roll...you need high quality blades, lots of them, a Deadman style foot petal, and a good light preferably with magnification. For years and years I had a 22W circular florescent lamp, but recently switched to LED.
I use and toss blades like they fall freely from the heavens. I tend to tension blades tighter than most as I seek to diminish blade deflection during sharp turns. Go-to blade is #5 reverse-tooth, although I also use #7, #9 and on rare occasions #2's. I buy #5's by the gross!
How much cost blades for the WEN scroll saw, and do they carry them at Home depot, Also which blades would you recommend fro brass or mother of pearl?
I buy Pegas modified geometry blades off Amazon or Bear woods supply. I have not found good blades at home depot. Prices depends on the quantity you are buying.
How do you make your dewalt stay up when you release the blade?
I just snugged the bolt at the end of the arm, just enough to hold the arm up. I saw someone else do it and it worked. I thought over time I would have to tighten again, but it's been fine. Thanks for watching! 😊
nicely done. But I'll keep my 1930's Sears scroll saw. We've had a lot of years and sawdust together
Love it!
I watched the whole video and never noticed any back ground music. Only found out there was music was by the complants.
I love this. 😆 Thank you!
Big difference in price on the two saws.
Yes
I notice when you raised the arm of the Dewalt saw it stayed up by itself. Did you tighten the screw at the back to add more tension. There are aftermarket gadgets available to hold the arm up when changing blades or raising for internal cuts, but you didn't need any of that. On mine, I slide a block of wood under it to hold it up. Thanks for the informative video. Not sorry I bought the Dewalt.
Yes, I did tighten. Just enough to hold it up.
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns Thanks
There's a video on RUclips on how to make a simple arm holder for the Dewalt. It cost me about $8 and was simple to make. Just do a search for it.
Kinda weird to have the dust port right in front sticking out at you while you're trying to work, Wen..
😆
I recently purchased the Dewalt saw and I'm surprised at how much it vibrates. My old Delta saw had much less vibration.
Really? I'm surprised with this. I generally cut things out and stack them on the table as I go. They never move.
Excalibur
Je voudrais acheter une scie dewalte s il vous plaît combien ça coûte. Je suis au Maroc et dans quel pays proche je pourrais l acheter
It's around $500, I'm not sure where you can buy it and get it shipped. Try Amazon Global?? I see Morocco listed as a place they ship to, not sure about something like a scroll saw.
@@StrongerByGraceDesigns think you vers mutch
Pegas makes top notch aftermarket Blade clamps for the Dewalt saw
I may have to check those out
I recently installed the Pegas clamps and I'm very disappointed with them. The vibration level of the saw increased which is opposite of what their advertising claimed. Blade changes may be slightly easier with the Pegas clamps but not worth the $80 cost of the clamps.
Now you are ready to go top of the line! I think that is Excalibur?
Maybe one day😄
Kinda like comparing a Ford to a Ferrari, lol. Of course the Dewalt is a better saw...at double the price. The WEN performs very well for its price
True 😄
You're good. You don't waste time like me :)
🙌
Just a little tip as you already know this, but a pedal will be best for you, game changer…..
Yes, I received one for my birthday this year! WOW, what a difference! Can't believe I went so long without one....
Thanks for the video but nothing will stop me from wasting my money.
Thanks for watching!
What size bolt do I need to replace the knob?
For the Wen, it's a M4-.70 x 16 hex cap screw found at probably any hardware store.
I have a Excalibur, the dewalt did not last very long and to repair it was excessive
Oh no, not good!
Another lying liberal
Put a led bulb in that DeWalt light.
I did change it out for an led, but it really didn't help much.
Great revue. Both companies should send you a free model
That would be nice 😉
Have a good look at this Wen scroll saw as it is a generic 16” ( 406mm )scroll saw that comes under a multitude of different brand names all over the globe and are basically all the same . The quality of electrical parts might differ and might come with different add-ons , colours, brand names etc. Have a good look at the castings and table as they are all identical and probably made in a country with less scruples. Buyer beware .
Love my Dewalt
My scroll saw projects hop a lot. Perhaps I'm using cheap blades...must subscribe to see what else I'm doing wrong.
It could be that you are not putting enough down pressure on your wood near the blade.
Try putting a piece of carpet under it.
If you want to try a real quality saw, try a 26 RBI.❤
Thanks 😄
The music is not necessary!
🤨Not a fair/good comparison at all seeing that the Dewalt higher priced scroll saw was being compared to a lower end Wen model that cost over $200 less. The Wen scroll that it should have been compared against is the Wen LL2156. This review comes off as shetchy.
Sketchy? Sorry, the point of the video was to compare a lower-end saw to a more expensive saw. They are both nice. This was to help someone decide whether they should spend money on a more expensive saw or a cheaper tabletop saw would do. I have been here wondering if the Dewalt was worth my money, so that is why I made the video.
Agreed! Not sketcy to me but apples to apples next time. But thanks for the review and your time , but i wanted to see the better WEN VS DEWALT.
Why not mention the costs?
Sorry, I should have. I guess I figured if someone was watching that they were probably already shopping for them and knew the cost. I believe the cost difference is around $350-$400 without the stand and light add ons.
The two saws are not the same category.
That was the point of the video.😊
Wen makes a much better saw than that he one you have and it’s comparable to the Dewalt and still much cheaper.
I was comparing what I had
The Wen doesn't even compare
I bought a wen item. What a piece of junk. Never going to buy wen branded anything ever.
Had to stop watching- the music is too loud and very annoying. What is it supposed to add?
Sorry you found it annoying. I don't feel the music is too loud. I don't think anyone wants to hear my kids running around upstairs...
Wow mike, you must be the life of the party in your circles. 🤦🏻♂️
@@PureBloodWNC Again, in English? I think you are suggesting I am not convivial; far from it, but there is a time and place. Why inject questionable music into a discussion of the relative merits of scroll saws? I ask again- what does it add?
@@Tensquaremetreworkshop A discussion is an exchange between two or more people. She spoke, we listened. A narration or presentation as there is a comment section here. Just helping you out as they will complain about your word choice. And yes normally you reduce the background music as we speak to aid in focusing on what you have to say. As for children noise, that is music, its hope.
@@FrancisoDoncona Normally, I would agree- at the time I felt is was a poor choice of terms on my part, and I tend to pedantry too (not a pejorative in my eyes, but a liking for correctness). However, I found one dictionary definition 'talk or write about (a topic) in detail, taking into account different issues or ideas.' No requirement for more than one person (which 'writing' would prevent anyway). As the video was stated to be a comparison, this fits rather well to this definition. Especially as the text also says 'we will also cut out a simple flower together' which suggests we are taking part- we may object to that statement, but it supports the 'discussion' aspect. 'you reduce the background music as we speak...' mixed pronouns perhaps, but it does not explain having background music at all. For those who like background music, why not let the viewer choose their own? They can play the music of their choice, at the volume of their choice. The chances of the video maker getting both right is low, so (once again) why do it?
sorry but two minutes in i'm done. That background music was so annoying. I want to hear you talk not listen to music.
