    I can't thank you enough for all this info. This is seriously one of the best posts I've found. I appreciate the comparisons of the makers directions vs yours. The example of the more high end machine is also really helpful. I've been guilty of wanting to give up on a hobby because the entry level tools were difficult to work and so I assumed the higher end tools would be as well. Your blade changing on both machines reminds me not to assume all tools are so challenging. I can't wait to get started in this. Thank you again for sharing this.

    I used a hundred dollar Ryobi for over 20 years. Used and abused; it got the job done. A few years ago I finally upgraded, and it was worth it for the ease of blade changing alone! However, I don't regret starting with a "cheap" saw one bit. I learned a lot and I got more than my money's worth out of it.

    I have only been able to afford this type of saw and have been using a magnet to hold the bottom blade holder up for years, I also have the top holder fixed by making a small plate fixed to the main screw on top holder that way for me makes it easier to attach the blade also i use a rubber band stretched over the blower securing knob to the blower pipe then when you loosen it the blower rises up to the top and gives you more room .I also keep a few extra holders so you can have different sizes of blades you might need .

    Recent experience with a similar $100 saw has largely taken the wind out of my sails for this hobby : when a pinless blade slipped out of the clamping system, I re-tightened it, and then the screw inside the clamping device snapped/broke inside the clamp, so I had to return the saw to the store where I bought it. The solution of course is to buy a high-end saw, but these cost about 10-times as much as a DIY-store saw. I don’t think that it would be cost-prohibitive to equip a saw like this with an easy-to-use clamping system, such as the ones used by Pegas or Hegner. That would make the entry into this hobby much easier for beginners, and would avoid the hassle that the awkward clamping system has caused to me, and surely to many others too.

    The WEN 3921 met my expectations and found it to be functional after a few adjustments. I added a light shade (piece of tape) to reduce flickering; a foot switch ($13) and magnifying glass ($5). Like your idea of adding a magnet to bottom arm for pinless blades. Not perfect scroll saw but works for my hobby projects.

    I have an old Dremel that is about the same saw. The clamp hangers on my saw have a piece of metal, like a spring, on top and bottom. It holds the blade clamps on the hangers. Looks like it would be easy enough to remove the screw on the bottom hanger and put a thin piece of metal on, then the hanger then put it back on the machine. That would keep the hanger from falling off when tension is removed. I also bought several extra blade clamps. I keep one on the top arm of the saw and put the others on the blades I plan to use. When I change a blade all I do is release the tension and remove the center plate, pop the blade clamp off the bottom hanger and pop the next blade in. I leave the top hanger on the arm and hold the blade while bringing the arm down, guide the blade into the clamp and tighten the screw.

    What great tips!!! Got this saw as a gift, knew it was a cheaper model, but couldn't wait. Except for larger cuts, fretwork was impossible with the pinned blades. Actually like being able to use both. The magnet tip was gold! Although the magnet doesn't stay in place, it's no problem placing it on and off especially with that cowling out of the way.. I've gotten pretty quick with taking the top adapter on and off. Followed every suggestion. I can't imagine figuring out all of this on my own. Thank you!!!!

    Good video. I have this saw in Australia which is marketed under a different name. I have struggled with the blade installation and have taken the side plate cover off too. the main problem I have is the 2 pinless clamps having set screws to tighten the blade into the holder which means I have to use a set screw wrench and is very awkard to say the lease. The thumb screws on your model would make it much easier to insert the blade and I will see if they are available in Australia. There is an Olson conversion kit that has a much better clamp system sells is Australia for around $40Aus. I like the idea of the magnet and will give that a try tomorrow. My main SC a Hegner gave up the ghost today so I have to percivere with this one until I get some more cash to buy a better one.

    When you are adjusting tension, do you figure it by sound? Seems like you were using that as guide. I have this and when I did the pinless blades they kept popping out of unit- is that a speed and tension issue? Or the wood is too hard for the blade? Thanks for this video- it was so useful!

    • @stevegood3224
      @stevegood3224 2 года назад +1

      Hi Carter. Blade tension is a combination of sound and feel. Then when you start cutting you will notice that the blade
      is drifting if you don't have enough tension. The problem is that some entry-level saws cannot handle what I would call proper tension. The clamps are just not good at holding the blade tight. The entry-level WEN does have this issue. Some people will use sandpaper and lightly roughen up the contact points of the clamps. This does seem to help but don't get too aggressive. The WEN can cut with what I call less than ideal tension but it won't be as accurate as a higher-end saw with better clamps. It is just a limitation of entry-level saws in general.

    • @stevegood3224
      @stevegood3224 2 года назад

      It is possible to prepare blades in clamps but keep in mind that a good scroll saw blade only lasts for about 45 minutes of cutting. They get dull pretty quickly. The WEN 3921 in this review has been replaced by the 3922. It has a redesigned clamping system that is better. Some of the tips in this video are now not necessary.

    Awesome video. I'm considering upgrading my entry level Craftsman scroll saw that is about 100 years old. The information provided here gives me a good base line on what to look for and still stay within my budget. Your teaching is great and look forward to watching more of your videos. Cheers and keep making sawdust.

    It’s really easy to modify the clamps to accept plane end blades by replacing them with the Mikita clamps which are tool less. A mod well worth doing. My biggest issue with this saw is the inability to lift the arm.

      Correction… it’s the Royobi clamps

  • @randsipe224
    @randsipe224 4 года назад

    Replacing the blade holding mechanism with Royobi parts eliminates the need for the separate clamps and makes this saw a whole lot better for using pinless blades. It’s a huge upgrade for not much money. The lower cover can be modified for quick release making access to the bottom clamp easier. Another good mod is to replace the throat plate with a zero clearance insert fairly easy to make yourself. There are a lot of things you can do to make this an acceptable saw for a lot less money than an expensive saw.

      Is there a particular Ryobi model that you used the part from?

    Now this is a good review. You present a lot of clear, specific details about the saw and how to use it. I know it was a lot of work, but I really appreciate the section on using the pinless adapters. I wish all the reviews were this good.

    I've had a couple of older Dremel's and they work fine for occasional work. I just have never been able to justify much more than the $100 I've spent for them, but there have been a few times when a high end saw would have come in very handy. I use mine for those occasional small parts I need to make that no other tool can do. A high end saw may change what I do for a living slightly, but for my money it goes to my Sawstop to save my fingers. I've never lost a fingertip on a cheap scroll saw. I can't say that about my old table saw(s)..

    great video, I have been using a porter cable entry level for the past couple years looking to upgrade but just trying to justify the expense . wonder what should be the height level of the saw? floor to table on saw was wondering if I have mine to low from the floor I look over my projects causing some back fatigue any suggestions. thank for the daily messages.

      My scroll saw is set at the same height as my elbows when setting so arms and back aligned with saw table and remain relaxed. If back problems continue consider a standing bench and saw set as same height as elbows. Seems to work for hobby use.

    Hi Steve, thank you very much for this info. I have a question: do you recommend the WEN saw for intricate work with polyethylene foam? Thanks.

      Im interested here as well, as with foam I would have always thought a hot wire cutter would be the best option.

      Hi Rejane. I only purchased this saw for review purposes. I gave this one away right after the review so I don't have long-term experience with it. The guy I gave it to still uses it and has not had any significant issues.

      I use a 5/32 inch hole for pinned blades. Normal hole for pinless blades is "2/32" so the hole for pinned blades is not that much larger given the patterns being cut out.

      I’m curious why you didn’t use the clamp/blade guides on top of the machine. My old Delta had those and they were much quicker than fiddling with changing pinless blades by hand.

    Will this saw cut 3/4 inch pine or is it just for small projects?

    • @stevegood3224
      @stevegood3224 2 месяца назад

      It will cut 3/4" pine. You have to slow the cuts down but with a good blade, it will work fine.

    Great detailed tutorial. One thing I have noticed with the budget scroll saws the aluminum table contributes to more vibration .
    Most budget tables have a punched hole that raises and deforms the surface of the table I.e. the opening is the high point.
    To check take a straight edge lay it across the top of the table to verify. Also the blower blows the fine dust towards you.
    Wear a mask ? Wish it blew the dust away from you.

    Why go pinless when using pins can save you so much aggravation? This set up looks an awful lot like Delta's. I'm looking forward to getting my hands on a Wen soon, but it's going to take me some time and lots of patience to deal with the pinless blade changing. If people want real thin blades, try filing them down on their backsides to get them into tight turnaround holes. What has my curiosity if the duo-direction aspect of this saw and using the left to right ripping function when it comes to beveling.

    • @stevegood3224
      @stevegood3224 Год назад

      Hi Steven. There is no comparison between pin end and pinless blades. There are no pin-end blades that get anywhere near as small as pinless blades. That's the reason no mid-level or high-end scroll saws even accept pin-end blades. You are correct that pin-end blades are better secured to the clamps on entry-level saws. The clamps on better saws hold very securely so the pinless blades work well and stay clamped. The better saws are also much easier to install blades. On entry-level saws like the one in this video, pin-end blades are more acceptable simply because the clamps are not great. You just have to limit yourself to simpler patterns. If you use a scroll saw for basic cuts then pin-end blades are fine.

    Thanks Steve. I have 2 Wens one at home and one in my little retirement shop. I have made a number of projects successfully although I recognize the shortcomings. So far I have worked around them. I appreciate you suggestions. And observations. They will help. I have used many of you patters from your website. Thanks a bunch!
