This clip is from the episode I, CONFESS. It's a favorite of mine. Here's a little tidbit for everyone. This episode was being aired when ABC broke in to announce that Martin Luther King had shot.
This episode is key to why Darrin and Sam wanted to keep Sam's abilities secret. This scene is the main reason why. Look at Larry. Once he realizes that Sam is a witch, he wanted to exploit her witchcraft to make himself wealthy, which could cause them a whole lot of problems.
This episode is similar to the episode WHAT EVERY YOUNG SHOULD KNOW. Endora sends Sam back in time just before Darrin would've proposed to her and they tell Larry that she's a witch with the same reaction from Larry.
Some criticize Darrin for not letting Sam use her witchcraft, but I think these two episodes along with SCHOOL DAYS, SCHOOL DAZE, the topic of exposure is central, and the latter episode also deals with privacy.
I have an issue with Darrin. Why did he think he was in charge of his wife? A witch is who she was. She wasn't "allowed" to be who she was? Nope, nope, nope. In Samantha's shoes I would have had NOTHING to do with Darrin. I don't understand why the studio cast such an unattractive man opposite Elizabeth Montgomery to begin with. They were an implausible match.
@@emdee7744 Well, this episode shows what can happen if Sam's secret was exposed, but there's probably ways around that. 🙂 Sam discretely used her powers in public, when needed, LITTLE PITCHERS HAVE BIG PROBLEMS, SAMANTHA FIGHTS CITY HALL, and if Tabitha causes a little problem. 😀
What would be interesting if Darrin had to live in Sam's world, where witchcraft reigns supreme. No. They wouldn't put up with him. Outside of Aunt Clara, Uncle Arthur (?), and Esmeralda, they don't like him much. 😅

Elizabeth Montgomery used to say that Gladys Kravitz was the smartest person on the show because she was the only one that was able to figure out that Samantha was a witch. Larry Tate Ran a big advertising firm and he never figured it out.
I suspect Abner knew. He just didn’t care and pretending his wife was crazy was more fun

I was in Westport, Ct. when I first saw this show. My father worked for the ABC-TV network; my neighbor Jonathan's father worked on Madison Av. for an advertising agency. His Dad's name was Sol. My father brought home the 'pilot episode' of this show, and Jonathan and I were among the very first to ever see it. Later, we got into a fight because I told him I thought his mother was a witch. True story!
Dick York's face...looked like made of rubber..so funny .
I watch this show endlessly, Dick York was terrific, my favorite Darrin.
I've been binge watching and I have to say Season 4 gave me the biggest laughs. I love Endora, beautiful, elegant woman. But Dick York is a blast and I am so weird but found him sexy with his gorgeous hair, boyish look and funny expressions, just a riot!!!

@@christopherpericolosi-king4979 the show itself was an allegory for interracial marriage--which was just becoming legal (Loving vs. Virgina would be decided in 1965).
I know if Sam being a witch was made public, our government and other greedy people would demand things from her, but Sam could also make herself, Tabitha and Darrin vanish to somewhere far away. So with her powers, no one could restrain her or force her into a situation she'd rather not be in.
Well, on the contrary, this is the government we're talking about, so I'm sure they would probably play it smart (knowing what Samantha could do). For instance, they could find a way to secretly kidnap Darrin and use that to get Samantha to cooperate with them, find limitations/weaknesses in witches and take advantage of those things.
there's a problem with Sam making her powers known, we have seen on a number of occasions how different cultures throughout the world had methods of countering witches over the centuries eg: peruvian black rose renders witches powerless and ill, Himalayan cinnamon removes a witches ability to cast spells, the ring worn by dr wrightmeyer caused witches to disappear. the government would be researching the best methods to subjugate witches/warlocks especially during the cold war.
Obviously they would try to hang her or burn her to death.
There is a part of me that's very much like Larry here: I don't really want the responsibility, as Larry does, but I do wish things went my way more often.😥
The Bewitched crew is adept at their craft, here putting mirrors on set. I think the hand mirrors were bronze so as not to noticeably reflect the behind-the-camera stuff.
I wonder why Darrin wants to keep his job. I would go and get another rather than put up with him hahaha 😂😜

I just watched it.
Darrin caught Samantha using witchcraft to dump water on some drunk guy who was hitting on her, after Darrin left her on the curb to prevent other witchcraft.
He stupidly said, We might as well tell the whole world.
Samantha gave him a spell dream where they told the whole world. Larry, the Kravitzes, everyone. There were fans glomming them when they went out, and some people calling for Samantha to be burned at the stake. Predictably, the military convinced her to be a weapon for the government. They all had to relocate to a secret military base, pretty much as prisoners. This was their life now.
Then Darrin woke up and Samantha agreed with him that the should tell the whole world. Darrin freaks out, and says he likes things just they way they are.
Sam and Darrin got into a huge fight because she used witchcraft to try to get rid of a drunk that was bothering her. Darrin decided that since she keeps using witchcraft, they should just tell everyone that she was a witch.
Sam cast a spell on Darrin so that he would have a dream about how people would react if they knew about her.
Other than Larry's reaction, neighbors were selling tickets for spectators (Gladys - 'I told you so!') and a lot of people were asking for favors, including the government.
It was a nightmare. 😏

Didn’t they also tell Larry on that episode where Samantha goes back and tells Darrin that she is a witch before they’re engaged?
That was a different episode. Endora was trying to prove to Samantha that Darrin would have never accepted Sam if he had known she was a witch before they married. This episode Darrin gets angry and says life would be easier if they just told the world she was a witch. Sam makes this happen during the night in Darrin’s dream to show him how bad of an idea that would really be.
On the pre-engagement time travel ep, "What Every Young Man Should Know", the reveal to Larry had no props like mirrors. Just LOTS of pop-ins and pop-outs, well-choreographed as in this episode. And, just like here, Larry went all megalomaniac about it.

No matter how many times I watch BEWITCHED, it never ceases to make me laugh. Some diaglogue is dated, like a client worth $28.5 million is a big deal, would be petty cash for Amazon today. But it doesn't matter.
BEWITCHED has a story in each episode, whereas a lot of comedies afterwards had people throwing one liners back and forth. That's probably why I didn't bother with many comedies afterwards. I did watch ALL IN THE FAMILY, THE JEFFERSONS, and a few others, but by the eighties, I did not watch that many comedies. In fact, my TV watching dropped.
Today, I can't think of any TV series that I follow. Thank goodness for the old shows of the 60s and 70s, and even some 50s shows. For me, BEWITCHED is still the best.
Try watching The Good Place.

I saw this episode once on TBS years ago. For some reason, I thought it was a Dick Sargent episode.
I couldn’t help but think of a line from Sabrina; the Teenager Witch:
“You know Big Ben? He wasn’t always a bell.” I know that there’s always consequences when it comes to magic; especially if it’s used improperly.
Not in Bewitched... The only complications is when trying to deal with mortals... Everything else has been given free reign...

This was a dream that Darrin was having, he dreamt what things might be like if Samantha being a witch was revealed to the world.

It's interesting to hear in the fourth season that they had changed they way they dubbed the "waaaaaave chime" sound effect into the show. In earlier seasons it always sound the same, but when they traditional sound effect is used when Sam pops the big mirrors in and then makes them vanish, there's differences. Coming from an audio production background, I wonder if the production team used "carts" back then, and for the fourth season the waaaave gliss and chime had been recorded onto two separate carts, and in the first three seasons it was on just one cart.

Darrin accepted who she was, the problems arose when other mortals witnessed acts of witchcraft performed by Sam or members of her family. Sam refused to lock the front door or close blinds lol

I think it was the one where Samantha makes Darrin dream that they tell everyone about her being a Witch.
I was 8 when this episode aired & remember the announcement. But I think the end of the show aired & Darrin, Samantha & Tabitha were imprisoned on an army base, wearing fatigues, and at the end Sam & Tabitha were led away, then Darrin woke up. I was SCARED TO DEATH!!!
Darrin decided that he wanted to go ahead and tell everyone that Samantha was a witch instead of trying to hide it all the time. While Darrin was asleep, Samantha made him dream that they did tell everyone and the results were not good. When he woke up, he changed his mind.

Darrin and Larry are my least favorite characters. Well mostly Larry because he just uses Darrin for money and reputation. When he doesn't get his way, he fires him which is stupid to be honest because without Darrin, McMahon and Tate Advertising would go down the drain quicker than the flash's run.
Larry shows off his great acting abilities in this scene.
This episode would have been an overall good movie script. Instead of being upset when he finds out, Larry loves the idea of Samantha being a witch. In the movie version, Louise also finds out and Endora is conflicted bc she likes mortals like Larry.
What Samantha could have said was that the witch's council would haul her in front of a tribunal and turned her into a cat for 100 years if she tried to take over the world and they are not permitted to use witchcraft to manipulate humans and what Larry was asking for us strictly prohibited. It might have saved Darrin from getting fired for the 10,000 time in the series.

DickYork was a good Darrin, but Dick Sargent was MADE for that role.
I loved Dick Sergeant too! He's been put down so many times, by so many viewers, who never seemed to think that he was capable of being just as good as Dick York. However, Dick Sergeant had such great acting abilities, that he appeared in more movies and television productions, than Dick York ever did. Thanks for bringing it up. Johnny Montréal Canada.

@@jeantetreault132 very very well said! I could not have said it better. People don’t even realize the role was originally created for Dick Sargent. He had something else going on at the time and had no choice, but to turn the role down. The truth is his persona is what they originally wanted.
Larry's comment and facial expressions are so typical. Darrin is great with it.
This episode compares to the I Dream of Jeanie called Hurricane Jeanie when Dr Bellows finds out about Jeannie. When secrets are revealed. My favorite part of this episode is when Abner Kravitz asks if she is a good witch. She said she was a good witch and Darrin stated that her mother is a bad witch
