    I’m Canadian...born and raised in Ontario, and lived in BC for 13 years.
    It doesn’t matter what country you go to, the cost of living is ridiculously high...especially in North America.
    In major Canadian cities...a one bedroom apartment can be up to $2,200 a month...and that’s not including utilities.
    Vehicles are expensive to maintain...especially insurance...if you’re going to a college, some insurance companies offer discounts...for home, vehicle, and travel insurance.
    Oh, I heard from friends who came from different countries, that Canada has the most expensive cellphone services and plans...
    Yes, Canada gets pretty darn cold...and summers can be humid and hot...but there’s so much to do, no matter the weather...
    If you’re coming alone, get a lot of “Canadian experiences”. Join groups and volunteer...volunteering can help you gain job experience, meet new people, and and build friendships....as well help in getting to know your community better.
    I hope wherever you end up, people will make you feel welcomed.

      Hi there! Thanks for the tips!
      Accommodation and car insurance in the major cities is definitely the major difference for us. Where I'm from, we pay these annually and the cost is much more affordable for us. Car Insurance isn't even really regarded as a cost because it's so low. So imagine my shock when I found out I had to pay so much monthly. It's especially expensive for newcomers to Canada because most Insurance companies don't regard our prior driving experience.
      The cellphone plans are also Pay as You Go, so you could go months without paying a dime if you don't call out.
      I love the Summers here, the humidity isn't too bad for me because I'm used to heat and humidity😌
      I'm curious, how do you like BC compared to Ontario? Jobs, cost, etc.

    • @Maya_Dachshund14
      @Maya_Dachshund14 4 года назад +9

      Feyi Mac I hate that Canada is so expensive...especially for those just starting out or starting over...these days it’s about finding tricks and hacks to survive...no matter where you are.
      I LOVE BC...but it’s just as expensive as Ontario. The weather is better in BC but there’s A LOT of rain in the winter months...the secret is actually getting out everyday or it can be very depressing. If I had the money and if my mothers health was better, I’d be living in BC...it’s a healthier and more active lifestyle.
      There’s also car share programs that people can join...you pay a membership fee, and a fee to use a car for your desired amount of time...no insurance and gas is included...so if you wanted to do a day trip or had some errands one of the car share programs may be worth a look.

      @@Maya_Dachshund14 that's great! If I had to move from Ontario, it would definitely be BC.
      Tricks and hacks are too important, every newcomer needs to find ways to save money. For some of us, as soon as we convert our currency to CAD, it becomes nothing. So working ASAP and making CAD is crucial.
      Loving your tips! Thanks, keep them coming 🌹

    • @FeyiMac
      @FeyiMac  4 года назад +6

      @Misskbel $1200 in Toronto and environs is not even enough to get a decent basement so it depends on the city. For someone changing their lower power local currency to CAD, even $1200 would be pricey.
      Car insurance for new immigrants in the GTA is about $350 monthly on average, some go as high as $400+ even with some discounts added. So the experience is quite different for newcomers.

    • @FeyiMac
      @FeyiMac  4 года назад +1

      @Misskbel she's not wrong because that's the cost in major cities like Toronto and Vancouver. Doesn't mean it's not cheaper in places like Montreal and Calgary. Her point is quite clear.

    I want to tell you that even though things like clothing can be expensive, you don't need to buy everything new. I would recommend charity or thrift shops, even asking churches if they have a clothing/food bank. Many churches in my city have programs especially for new Canadians called 'conversation clubs'. It can be awkward to ask for assistance but it's usually the only way people can help. There are organizations literally waiting for you to ask them for help. Nice video, you seem really genuine

    I'm glad you made this video. Although I no longer teach, there were nights I went without sleep from worrying about foreign students and their quality of life here. I know for some people, trial by fire is the only way they figure out how to live in Canada while working on their degree of choice. I hope your message gets across and potential students really investigate where they will be living for at least 3 years out of their young lives. I live near McMaster University and fortunately, here, there are services that make the transition from a country with a different climate and economical system easier. I wish your stay in Ontario gets better to the point where the negative moments aren't so negative! ;)

You can find many clubs for people from everywhere in the world. Some places are better than others. Halifax is a dead town. Maritime provinces do have much opportunities as places like Toronto and Vancouver. But even the Mongolian communities in Canada are set up. So you can find friends. A person just has to reach out.

    The accommodation bit is so true. I suffered so much trying to get a rental. Even my realtor failed me and I had to start calling different company owned apartment buildings, got one last minute (a day to the expiry of my Airbnb rental) but it was a hellish situation. Many landlords are scared that new immigrants dont have jobs and may not be able to pay rent after some months and they would have to deal with eviction issues. The work around is not legal but is very common. Many people pay 6 months to 1 year upfront just so the landlord has that assurance that there won't be that situation but no landlord will ask because legally you can only ask for 1st and last month rent. So as an intending tenant if you can afford it and don't have a choice, just offer it and see how it goes. Thanks for sharing Feyi!

    • @FeyiMac
      @FeyiMac  4 года назад +1

      Oh my! So sorry you had to go through all that, jeez. Yes, that workaround is very common. Here in the GTA, some landlords will even ask even though it's illegal. Glad it all worked out in the end!

    Very solid and analytical review of Canada. I went to Canada (Toronto) once for my vacation back in 2015. It was in the summer and I enjoyed it very much. Went to all the major attractions. My friend and host keep encouraging me to come and live in Canada. However the prices and the cold weather (outside of the summer months) are the biggest deterrents. Canada is clean and beautiful but I’ll only go there for the occasional summer vacation.

    Hi Feyi. I'm totally committed to moving to Canada. I completed my ECA in March, wifey put in for ECA too but due to the pandemic and ASUU strike we are still on it. I have also tried IELTS and I would have to rewrite it because I had a 6.5 in reading (also wifey is meant to do hers by 6 Nov).So you know how committed I am, I am also writing BCS by Nov to boost my crs score. It will really go a long way if I get to be 1 of lucky 8 winners of the section 2 of the give away. This will relief me of the financial stress of having to pay for IELTS again.
    P.S - I'm determined to Ace IELTS this time. thanks

    Not All of Canada is Cold. Out west in the city of Calgary, Alberta we have Chinooks which means that our winters are mostly milder. The snow can fall and disappear within the day as warm winds coming off the pacific the Rocky mountains causes the climate to heat up. Calgary is Sunny year round. British Columbia is Warmer than most. In fact the closer to the coastal its year round blossoms. In regards to isolation and loneliness that applies anywhere if you don't have friends or family connections. Regarding the cost of living British Columbia and Ontario are the highest. Quebec and Alberta are reasonable. I prefer to live out West as apposed to out East. Just my take. Please don't speak for out West. I love Canada it is beautiful and so are the people. Its very clean.

      Granted it does get cold in the winter. Minus 20 would be normal but can get down to minus 40. However it is not that hot during summer. Can get over ninety but not very often. Rarely have humidity so that's a huge plus. While we get snow in winter because it's so cold it doesn't cause problems that it does where it's warmer. We don't get a foot of wet snow falling straight down that you can't get through. I worked in health care for many years so have worked with many immigrants from all over. They all say the first winter was a shock but they become used to it the same as the rest of us. They say moderate summer temps no humidity no earthquakes no mud slides no landslides and no hurricanes makes up for the cold! Currently we have people from Philippines, Iran, and Abu Dhabi working where I am from there's also an immigration centre not far from where I live. If you ever wanted to be put in contact let me know and I can hook you up.

    Canada is a very expensive country. I left Canada to live in Florida, and come back to Canada. That's when I realized how expensive Canada is. A garage to put your car is 250$ a month. It's like a rent. Cell phone is a luxure in Canada. You cannot have enought data for the month, unless you spend lot of money. But, they have their good side also.

    I wish most people knew that Canada is not a country made to accumulate wealth before coming. This is one of the main reasons why a lot of immigrants are leaving shortly after arriving. Too many people associate Canada with the American dream but Canada is much more like Scandinavia, where the living standards are high but the country is not made to get rich.

    Canada is a beautiful country with lots of opportunities. I see the Indians and Chinese taking the pros and getting ahead. We as black people have so much potential and sometimes lack the motivation to succeed. Some black people are doing great here in Canada but I see a lot of people come to Canada and think it’s bed of roses and go and buy brand new car and expensive apartment. Then realizing how broke they are afterwards with bad credit. In Canada, you have to stay humble and do your thing without outside influences because as anew immigrant, so call friends will corrupt your mind and progress because they live here prior and don’t have nothing going for them.

    I am very curious. Do you mind breaking down these expensive cost of food and clothing. And compared to how much you expected. I'm born and raised in Canada, I have been around the states, and to Europe and the U.k and I've seen pretty reasonable prices here in Canada, and know when to shop and find sales. Also prices are high for accommodations within a 60 km radius of a big city, so guys please consider that. Or even in parts of town that are not as popular. For instance Scarborough has some sections by Ellesemere or Kennedy, Toronto has some sections by York university and Humber college. Please used LinkedIn to connect with people who may know, and even Kijiji.ca using Google maps, to see the whereabouts the places for rent area. I hope that helps. God bless you for the video, please let me know some costs

      Hi Stephanie, thanks for your comment. I'll definitely film a video about this. It's especially exaggerated for new immigrants from African countries because by the time we convert out local currency to CAD, our purchasing power is not as high. It gets better when earning dollars but living in Toronto and the GTA is still generally expensive for us.
      I find shopping for fashionable items quite expensive here as opposed to the US or UK though. We don't really get massive sales like the US so I tend to shop from there. Will plan to film the video soon enough to break it down.
      Thanks for all the tips! 🌹🌹

      @@FeyiMac Heyy, thanks so much for responding, you're great. OH ok, so the struggle is real when you don't have a part time job to help. I gotchyuh. Yes I'm Ghanaian so I am calculating the currency differences on the regular. I don't eat fufu and all that, but I buy my bag of rice that lasts basically a millenium, buy my $2 canned tomatoes and meat for my rice and stew and veggies so groceries is like $30 a week. Clothes can be expensive, but I always buy on sale, those $50 jeans I buy for $10-25, $32 on rare occasions. But yes I know forsure its more expensive than America, but I can't help but think about the cost of tuition in America, and healthcare, if I feel a headache or weird, I won't be charged, and then the hourly minimum wage is better. I have not shopped in the UK for clothes because the pound is more than the $cad but the groceries were around the same amount. But ofcourse I can't take away from your experiences, but I just hope to make people feel better about their choice to come to Canada. Thank-you for sharing. Much love
