Great tutorial! I haven't tied much for a couple years and Dad's been asking for bucktails for Christmas, so I've been looking for some simple imitators other than the Black Headed Dace to tie for him. A dozen of these should work great!
Craig, thanks for stopping in to watch and leave a comment. I have a bit of an obsession with bucktails and streamers, I'm glad that you were able to glean a couple tips. Cheers
Thanks Gary, I have to refill my bucktail stock as well. I just got the news today that my favorite brand is no longer going to be making fly tying materials. Gotta stock up on them. :) Cheers
If you read this old friend, try Haig-Browns streamers. His tend to be a bit sparse but a lot of his fishing was done in estuaries. Not sure if that makes a difference?
This is a lot similar to what I fished in Alaska. Well only one dolly varden on it - and I gave it a whole lot of weight to fish it on the Kenai River. : )
James R Borsevich, thanks for sharing your experience with this pattern. I love tying and fishing bucktails, and can't wait to throw this one on the weekend. Cheers!
I guess Im randomly asking but does someone know a tool to log back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb lost my account password. I would appreciate any tips you can offer me.
@Casen Brixton Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm waiting for the hacking stuff now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Hey man a great fly! Great tying instructions! The tyers I like to watch are those who do narrative tying. I don't enjoy head banging music while tying with no instructions at all, or the high speed video with no instructions, just seems the lazy way through a pattern. Ray recently gifted me Gierach's new book, autographed and dedicated. It is raining hard today. I am hoping it will bring on the mushrooms, I think it will be a good reading day. I think of you often Darren, I hope you are well, please stay safe.
Thanks Kerry, I really do appreciate it. I haven't had a chance to read the newest Gierach book, but I've enjoyed at least a dozen of them over the years. Trout Bum is one that got me into fishing smaller streamers for small trout with bamboo. You stay safe too. cheers
Chimo, you do an excellent job on streamers too, hair or feather wing! That has a perfect "sparseness" imho. Now i know why you thought that perch streamer I mentioned to you was too heavily dressed. Petti harped on that a lot in the GFF article. I like his writing style too, very down to earth regular kinda guy. The GLBTB he tied for 365 was beautiful also. I like these patterns with the belly below the shank rather than part of the wing. I missed the notification for this upload, different format on this device. Glad I saw it... Cheers
Chimo! That's too bad that you missed the notification. This is pretty much my ideal image of a classic bucktail. I'm always striving to match Bob's flawless ties, but, I'm always coming up a little short. It's fun to practice though and to keep trying to improve. I just posted another today as well for you to have a look at. Cheers!
Wow that looks amazing
Nice tie thanks for sharing
That's a good one, Darren.
I'm trying to learn how to tie flies, thank you for the video.
You’re welcome 😊 Thanks for stopping in, T V. Cheers and Keep a hook in your vise!
Nice pattern , this body looks like it would be a good modification for my Mickey Finns !
Hardy, that sounds like a really cool take on a Mickey Finn. Best of luck at the vise. Cheers
Man, never knew you were tied into that bucktail site. One of my favorites
Stream Urchin, thanks! It was a fun project to put together.
Love the ending scene

Thank you Shandra, much appreciated. I hope your Dad enjoys the bucktails. Cheers, see you in the next video.
Nicely tied pattern, the head is very well proportioned, I picked up some good tips and will apply them to my bucktails in the future.
Thank you
