These old Westerns sure do bring back memories. How the times and movies have changed. This good film was shot in 1968 largely in Brackettville, Texas on the set built 9 years earlier for the legendary "The Alamo" starring and directed by John Wayne. You can recognize the sheriff's office, the prison, the hotel, the church with the white turret beyond the clearing where the gallows are mounted, the bank and other buildings. The last part is filmed a few hundred meters away where the strenuous defense of the Alamo defenders took place, you can sense the places and the Alamo mission appears hidden by decorative additions and you can glimpse the gray door of the same where John Wayne was hit with a spear shortly before dying by blowing up the explosives depot. The Alamo set was used in many other productions and became a place open to tourists and visitors until 2009 when the last people of Happy Shahan's family died. He was the owner of the ranch that allowed the Duke to build the set from zero. As far as I know, in 2010 a screening of Wayne's film was organized inside the set, then nothing. No buyers subsequently, an auction of the artefacts and objects for fans was organized years later and now unfortunately the location is slowly but surely decaying into abandonment. A real shame as it is a piece of cinema history visited for more than forty years by hundreds of thousands of fans.

Funny thing, when I was a kid in the late 60s /early 70s, I had a hand crafted holster that my grandfather made for my’six gun’. Kept it oiled like he told me, and I was the fastest draw in my neighborhood. Grandpa and Jimmy Stewart had several similarities, tall , thin, same way of talking slowly and precise. Growing up with grandpa and watching Jimmy in his movies, I always felt I’d had a good education on how to do things right in life, even though I’ve strayed at times.
While mine was not made by my parents, I remember my first Western style belt/holster combo from my teens in that era. It was a hand-tooled brown belt with 24 bullet loops (22 LR) with a tooled drop holster for my Ruger Single Six. It cost a whopping $10 from a man who made trips to old Mexico and brought back pickup truck loads of various handmade leather goods, even saddles. I still have that old rig, but it has been many decades since I was slim enough to wear that old friend.
Excellent movie! Jimmy Stewart was always a star in any Western he appeared in. The war gave him that extra grit that he could channel into his characters.
A James Stewart story. James Stewart was walking down the street when a man approached him and said, "Mr. Stewart, It probably means nothing to you, but I have always been a big fan of yours and have seen all of your films" James Stewart held out his hand and said "It means everything to me"
It's a well written movie doing bad things just hurt you in the end, so it played with your emotions over this brother caring to save his other brother and went just too far to do it and like a well written movie no matter how much you change justice still will apply and so it did. Great actors die but doing the movie justice to do it. Awesome movie never will it be like this again but hope is around the corner now 2024 things are about to change. God bless our nation.
I ran across an interesting bit of trivia in IMDB. One of the sheriff's men in the posse was (later in life) NFL head coach/defensive coordinator Wade Phillips. I tried to place him in the movie but he would have been pretty young then. But he was one of the two men killed by the bandits, when George Kennedy noticed two men missing, his deputy even says "Wade Phillips is missing too" at timestamp 1:04:44 . As a Bronco fan I thought it was worth mentioning. Great movie though, like people say, they don't make 'em like this anymore.
Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove was written in 1985. He used these names from this movie and the Montana idea as well it appears. What a hoot to find this from just randomly picking a movie from Utube because it was Jimmy Stewart in it.

Bandolero 1968. There is little hope for bandit Dee Bishop (Dean Martin) and his gang as they wait to be hanged. A classic western that ranks up there with the best. Dean Martin, gorgeous Raquel and George Kennedy all portray their characters with excellence and make you believe in the story. One thing that has always made me scratch my head is the name of the movie, Bandolero. The Bandoleros make there first appearance at 1 hour and make their real presence in the movie at the end, about 10 minutes to go. So the Bandoleros really were NOT the main focus of the movie just a minor antagonist. Actually, George Kennedy was the main antagonist and Dean was the protagonist. James Stewart floated back and forth between the two and in many ways filled in the gaps as that transitional charater that helps you slide back and forth between good and evil. Raquel Welch was the a-typical Spanish woman, fighting her way out of poverty and always wanting a better life, and willing to do whatever it took to ensure she had that better life. But then she reveals her true nature, ignores the nice guy and goes for the BAD GUYS, Martin and Stewart. This is typical for women characters, going all the way back to the garden of Eden.
