  • The argument over private ownership of guns and other security tools can be really similar. Recently the Flipper Zero has come under fire as a tool that is too dangerous to fall into the hands of regular, everyday people. But is it? Does it create holes in our existing security systems or merely reveal the ones that are already there?

    You hit the nail on the head. Banning the Flipper Zero is a typical knee-jerk reaction from clueless bureaucrats. Nothing the Flipper Zero does is unique, there are plenty of devices out there that have the same capabilities in a small form factor. Even if you were to ban them, they're very easy to build with some intermediate-level technical know-how. The Flipper Zero just puts it all in one convienient package with a nice interface. More to the point, it's for localised PenTesting at sites where you have physical access, not deploying criminal enterprises at scale or remote access.
    I'd also put money on sales of Flipper Zeros going through the roof now. It's like banning a book - it just makes people want to read it who would have otherwise had no interest in it.

      @JamesCostelloDev Год назад +26

      There are a lot of stereotypes about hacking, and many people do not fundamentally understand its purpose. Hacking is a skill defined as modifying a system to do something it was not intended to do. Hacking has nothing to do with "rules" or "beating the system" and certainly not about "making someone upset."
      Many of us "hack" our gear to personalize said gear for our intended purposes. Most people who develop the "hacking" skill are typically curious about how a system works or want to make the system better in some way.

    The boundaries of the Second need to be pushed, hard. There's a variety of places where "non-gun people" can develop a sudden appreciation for "arms" that are good for "self-defense" in this post-Heller modern age. From the simple things like all the changes reverting away from the "common to a militiaman" rules, through cellphones, recordings, drones, AI, easier/earlier full-provision of government cellphones and recordings in court cases, ... all the way to campfires and other nuisance regulations.

    Great video. As noted... this tool does nothing special. It just gives you a lot of neat tricks in a single compact device. I remember having fun doing a lot of these things since the early 2000s with my friends as a bunch of hobbyists just having fun learning. It was a lot harder back then. The flipper zero simply shows that we still have a lot to improve in the "security" of technology in our life. But instead of acknowledging that and fixing it. The world wants to ban the tool and pretend the problem doesn't exist. Ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

      "False safety" but hey while we're at it, lets apply the same logic to ransomware-as-a-service and lie to ourselves that a user friendly ransomware for average cyber criminal to deploy doesn't increase in probability of attacks compared to having to write a ransomware from scratch. Bandwagon jumpers just agree with everything.

    Thank you for making this video. The negative attention to the flipper is really irritating. The only attractive thing about it, is the amount of functionality for the cost. Any consumer phone can do half of its functions with a little knowledge and setup. The flipper is a low powered version of a lot of existing tech like you showed, Hackrf, tvbegone, rubber ducky, wifi pineapple, chameleon, etc.
    It lowers and focuses the price of a $120 raspberry PI that is bare bones (or pwnagochi if you know), to a complete software and hardware setup that makes learning easy for $160.
    The real scare factor, is that companies know about a lot of attacks (that have been done for decades) that the flipper is capable of most of them, and the companies REFUSE to fix there problems.
    We should be holding these companies and regulatory agencies responsible not silly Proof of concept devices. The Flipper scares these groups, and as they are calling it " a kids toy" its sad the weight they are giving it.
