Marques lives in NYC there's construction down in his apartment, that's why starting from 5:40 there's a noise. I hate it too Marquess you aren't the only one haha.
The Msr7 is the real consumer successor to the M50x. The m70x and r70x really hit in the face that they are monitors for monitor, not for consumer. So if you guys want to upgrade from m50x, go do some research on msr7.
Nah. My original m50’s are great. Better than my dads old m40’s. However the m50x are a disappointment, seems like they’ve been hit by the magic beats by Dre wand. Completely bass dominant. And sadly that’s the m50’s people are getting today. The m40’s are good. But definitely wouldn’t say better than the original m50’s. I’ve just invested in some m70’s so am interested to hear what they sound like.
the M70x's just don't seem worth it I think this is their attempt to compete in the "over priced" headphone market. I see this just further encourages people to buy the M50's at a lower price.
they aren't trying to beat the ATH-M50Xs they are competing with headphones like the Seinhiesser HD 600s and tbh they are doing a pretty good job. Although they are in the same line up they are not the same type of haedphones.
just finally got a pair of m50x because of your glowing review and couldn't be happier. best headphones I've ever owned by a long shot. thanks for the content. even though I'm years behind, better late than never :)
Hey man, just wanna say thanks for helping me choose these headphones as my first "big" tech purchase! Your review helped me in choosing my first pair of high-end headphones.
Look nice… but I'd still pick the Vmoda M100s over then. Built MUCH better (all metal, braided cables) and more features (fold, quality bag, great warranty, and more). Plus they sound great. Also, get the XL earcups. Much better seal and comfort.
I use the VModa M100s too and love them but they do ha e a weak point. The metal part that connects the cups to the body has a plastic connection which I can see breaking off at some point. Love the sound though
***** most people buying the M50 (and I'm sure some people will mistakenly buy the M70x) will use them for recreational use. Just want to show there are other great and in my opinion better options
These are NOT flat headphones. I have tried the ENTIRE M- lineup, and the m40x is the best one for sound quality. It has the most flat, best sounding headphone. The m70x is OBJECTIVELY too bright and makes me cringe from sibilance, the m50x is OBJECTIVELY to V-shaped, but the m40x is perfect. I can find sources to prove this if anybody wants them.
Z3phyr he could just look it up on forums with a quick google search instead of waiting. I agree the m50x have somewhat of a vshaped response. But for 120$ they are an OK buy. M70xs are really not much worth for the price there are better alternatives.
how do you us your headphones? The M70Xs have a completely neutral response which means that music won't sound as good on them but it will sound as close to how it was made. For playing games, watching movies, listening to music and VR get the Sony WH-1000XM4s (as they are better than the QC 35s and the same price). For video editing, music editing and critical listening get the ATH-M70Xs
I couldn't wait for these headphones to come out! And when they did, i couldn't wait for you to make a video on them! And here they all in all their glory!
Marques, Thanks for the video. I heard that the ATH-M50X are on sale are on sale at Amazon for $164.97. Bought a pair and got them today. I am loving the sound from them. Thanks again for the recommendation.
As all ears are different and every one has different sound preferences, I preferred the much cheaper Marshall majors over the M50. My friend had the m50 (got stolen) and my Marshall headphones was for me almost identical sound quality but could go a lot louder as well.
$400 for closed back headphones?! I love audio technica but they went a bit overboard with the price on these. I love my m50's and my ath-adg1's but for this price there is a lot of better options for studio monitors. Definitely the most you should be spending on closed back cans.
9 лет назад+6
Implying the adg1's are worth it for the price lmao
Kenneth Ho adg1's might not be but ad700x sure are. Open back is just a better experience imo and i got mine for $150 cheaper than what these are going for. Any more than this for closed back headphones is just stupid
9 лет назад
Ad700X is actually a step down from its predecessor imo
Personally I think he should look into audio more, I feel like he doesn't really know a lot about headphones that much, because when he mentioned reference headphones aka open back headphones, you mainly use open back for straight listening, no mixing no recording. Now there are open back headphones meant for that, but there's more closed back monitors then open back monitors. Open back headphones do offer flat frequency, but you can here all the noise surrounding you. Closed back headphones offer more isolation, personally closed back headphones are better for studio use.
I do agree on your first statement, because he does have bias towards audio technica, but I'd have to disagree with the rest. Closed back headphones usually have more of a bass emphasis and lack the little details you find in higher end headphones. Open back headphones are great for studio use and offer a more natural presentation, more soundstage, and are usually more neutral with the exceptions of some headphones such as the hd650 which are pretty dark headphones. Many people use open back headphones for studio use, and they have a good reason in doing so
Your right, but the point I'm trying to make is that mkbhd does not know a lot about headphones and audio based off of what he talks about in his videos. For example the video beats by dre explained. He still says that the audio quality on the newer beats by dre studio. Believe it or not they sound a lot better than the previous version of the beats studios. I know you must think in crazy, but according to frequency graphs they compare to some of the higher end brands, like shure, denon, sennheiser, etc. But he still says they're bad based off of the reputation of the company.
Todd Fee sure, beats has improved from a pile of trash to something rather listenable to the masses, but they still have quite a margin to improve on to compete with the likes of Sennheiser, AKG, grado, beyerdynamic, audeze, hifiman. I think he uses beats as that is generally known as a trash company that people would understand without much explaining. Sure he could have used other headphones such as Sol republic, street by 50, skull candy, Bose, but most people know beats better as a broad topic and therefore would understand the comparison
Todd Fee he's not an expert at headphones, and I think too many people treat him like one which creates this form of "expectation", which is why I'm assuming you expected something less opinionated. I'd say his knowledge is strongest with cameras and video editing, while general on the rest
Hi Marques, I'm still wondering where you got the frequency response graph for the ATH-M70x from. As a viewer of your posts, I would greatly appreciate an answer. Thank you.
Hm.. sacrifice portability for a flatter response at double the price? Not sure if I'd go for it. I'm always throwing my headphones in my bag and taking it on the go, so I think the portability is a bit more important to me. Sony has some great super flat response headphones for studio monitoring at $100 or less like the MDRV6 or the MDR7506, and I would just keep them on my desk so I don't have to worry about portability. Then I'd have a second pair that's portable for everyday, like the Audio-Technica M50x. :)
I doubt the sound quality of those $100 Sony's would really compare. Yea, these headphones certainly aren't for everyone though. Seems like they're going for the higher end audiophile or professional crowds.
***** I think you mean the DT 880's. DT 770 and the 990's definitely are heavy on the bass side. I would recommend these as well, but not for a flat sounding headphone.
Or even the m-40x, they also super neutral and used more for monitoring music then m-50's. I wonder how the m-70's would compared to the Sony's and m-40.
J-Francois Roy I have both headphones and the hd598 is nowhere near as versatile as the m50x when it comes to travel, portability and the amount of abuse it can take. That said the hd598 is also a much more comfortable and overall better sounding open headphone. The two headphones serve two different purposes. At home I always use my hd598s, but if i'm going anywhere it's always the m50x.
So the M50X's sound better, look better, and are more affordable than these newer ones? That makes my choice very clear. Not really a fan at all of these. They totally downgraded Aesthetically I.M.O. Btw, what FPS did you use? Looked very clear and sharp in 1080p as usual but it looked a bit smoother than usual.
***** Honestly, it depends, like when comparing them to open backs then yeah you can get much better headphones, BUT if you work, listen or do whatever in a semi loud, loud environment then some M50s for 140ish aren't bad at all.
Bought the MTH M50's after your review, one of the best tech related purchases i've ever done. Use 'em every day and the only downside, which was the tightness, diminishes over time.
+IronMech Dragon m70xs are better for mixing as it gives more neutrality to the sound., but the m50xs are great at that and sound great for listeniing.
I like them a lot. If you are looking for a neutral pair of headphones, you'll probably love these. If you are looking for something with emphasized bass, you'll be disappointed by these. if you are coming from M50s, you may be disappointed and find them to be tinny or overly bright.
Hey Marques! You are probably the best reviewer on RUclips. I really like to just type your name to watch some new, up to date tech reviews! I am a big fan of your work! At 3:13 you said 2m instead of 1.2m which is not a big issue at all, but I thought it might be worth mentioning. Since I am writing my first comment ever on your videos... I can't decide between the ATH M50, ATH M50X, Byerdynamic Custom Pro One. I listen to mainly rock n roll, some bboy musicl, I like quality (most of my tracks are FLAC), I don't do monitoring and listen to music when travel. Can you give me some advice? Thank you and have a nice day! :)
the M70xs are fantastic and very neutral. exceptional for audio engineers. HOWEVER--do be warned that they break easily. especially the swivel hinges. you will have to baby them. Not recommended as daily drivers for everything. more for serious audio work. But the sound is impeccable and they are very comfy

The m40xs are still my favorite headphones L0L. The M70Xs have a slight weird tinny sound from sound demos I have heard. The m40xs are accurate af I'd say and I like that for listening to music and mixing/making music.
Ahhh you scared me for a minute there! I recently just bought the m50x model and I thought these m70s were going to blow away the older model. Whew! Thanks for a great review! Glad I have what I do! -Gil

***** Solo 2's and Studio 2's sound great. I replied to you,not because I want to bash on beats, but because I want to help you understand tha sometimes people just know what is actually better audio, and what pretends to be. It's not about the money,(as I said,my cans cost $400). It's about the knowledge and your will to do some research before you buy.

you should do a review on your MixPreD
Newbie here.. What is DAC ??
Great comparison. While the M70Xs look and sound great, the portability and the pricetag of the M50s still make it an awesome buy.
I did not think a 5 year old video of Marques would be beneficial to me, but here I am.
Draw a line across the top of the Beats frequency response, then add some tears and closed eyes and you have my reaction when I saw it.
the band holy fuck
Marques lives in NYC there's construction down in his apartment, that's why starting from 5:40 there's a noise. I hate it too Marquess you aren't the only one haha.
I love your videos
thanks jrake
I love how the review of the m70's will further convince you to buy m50's. They are just too damn good
and how do you replace pads on m70 ? headphone is useless without replacements
Just bought the m50xbt2 and they're insane value.
I just bought a pair of M50x, and I have to say I'm relieved this wasn't a video explaining how the M70x are a huge upgrade!
The Msr7 is the real consumer successor to the M50x. The m70x and r70x really hit in the face that they are monitors for monitor, not for consumer.
So if you guys want to upgrade from m50x, go do some research on msr7.
m40x is the best
True
Awesome. You just made me want to replace my M50s.
Hi Taylor! :D
You can send them to me if you replace them :)
Mine just broke......;(
Can I have them? PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF (insert idol you worship)! I NEED THEM!
***** Yet your video made it seem that they're not really worth upgrading from the M50's so I'm confused.
Try M-40X, same sound, lower price
the M70x's just don't seem worth it I think this is their attempt to compete in the "over priced" headphone market. I see this just further encourages people to buy the M50's at a lower price.
It is more to appeal to sound producers, not average day consumers
they aren't trying to beat the ATH-M50Xs they are competing with headphones like the Seinhiesser HD 600s and tbh they are doing a pretty good job.
What was that little background noise that cut in around 5:30? anyone else hear that?
It sounds scary lol like someone breathing in but never exhaling. I can hear it with my ATH-M50x that MKB recommended. ;)
Angel M lol me too xD
Its the sound his furnace makes sometimes. :)
I remember from a Pocketnow interview a while back.
boiling water
that's him trying to find the headphone users.
Look nice… but I'd still pick the Vmoda M100s over then. Built MUCH better (all metal, braided cables) and more features (fold, quality bag, great warranty, and more). Plus they sound great.
Also, get the XL earcups. Much better seal and comfort.
The V-Moda's are SICK! They are the best consumer headphones out there ( in my opinion).
These guys get it. V-moda FTW
I use the VModa M100s too and love them but they do ha e a weak point. The metal part that connects the cups to the body has a plastic connection which I can see breaking off at some point.
Love the sound though
V-Modas are the absolute killer.
***** most people buying the M50 (and I'm sure some people will mistakenly buy the M70x) will use them for recreational use. Just want to show there are other great and in my opinion better options
Wow Marques! You keep getting better and better with your reviews! Keep up the good work man!
Your videos are really polished. I appreciate the frequent uploads as well.
Your reviews are the best on RUclips. Thank you for such high quality content Marques.
Z3phyr i would like to get source please.
Zedocraft kind of busy rn, will send them soon.
Z3phyr lol
David Garcia Y lol
Z3phyr he could just look it up on forums with a quick google search instead of waiting. I agree the m50x have somewhat of a vshaped response. But for 120$ they are an OK buy. M70xs are really not much worth for the price there are better alternatives.
Fucking loving my Beyerdynamic DT990 Pro.
They've been making them for 30 years for a reason.
can you do a comparison of the bose qc 35 and the audio technica m70x, I am wondering which one to get
how do you us your headphones? The M70Xs have a completely neutral response which means that music won't sound as good on them but it will sound as close to how it was made. For playing games, watching movies, listening to music and VR get the Sony WH-1000XM4s (as they are better than the QC 35s and the same price). For video editing, music editing and critical listening get the ATH-M70Xs
I couldn't wait for these headphones to come out! And when they did, i couldn't wait for you to make a video on them! And here they all in all their glory!
Marques,
Thanks for the video. I heard that the ATH-M50X are on sale are on sale at Amazon for $164.97. Bought a pair and got them today. I am loving the sound from them. Thanks again for the recommendation.
My bad. They were on sale for $129.00 they are on sale for the price I listed.
Did Audio-Technica just straight up skip the ATH-M60's?
Stan Gibson nope it came out last year
@@8bitter696 You're a little bit late on this.
Lol
Awweeee CUUUUHZZZZZ
4:05
The _Oh shit, I'm still recording_ face.
As all ears are different and every one has different sound preferences, I preferred the much cheaper Marshall majors over the M50. My friend had the m50 (got stolen) and my Marshall headphones was for me almost identical sound quality but could go a lot louder as well.
There's so much useful information in this video! So well thought out and put together as all your videos are, thank you!
Alternatively, get Sonarworks Calibration and an Ath M30x.
$400 for closed back headphones?! I love audio technica but they went a bit overboard with the price on these. I love my m50's and my ath-adg1's but for this price there is a lot of better options for studio monitors. Definitely the most you should be spending on closed back cans.
Implying the adg1's are worth it for the price lmao
they also have open ones. they have a ton of open ones.
in fact, ATH-R70x
ATH-AD2000X
ATH-AD1000X
ATH-AD900X
ATH-ADG1
ATH-AD700X
ATH-AD500X
atlas :p yeah i know, i have a pair of adg1's
Kenneth Ho adg1's might not be but ad700x sure are. Open back is just a better experience imo and i got mine for $150 cheaper than what these are going for. Any more than this for closed back headphones is just stupid
Ad700X is actually a step down from its predecessor imo
From about 5:40 on there is a strange noise :s
I'm getting it too.
i dont hear anything D: damn it beats
I think he is boiling water
Vincent Gagné I think some furniture is being drilled , whatsay ***** ?
Jesus So we're dropping brand names? Damn it KRKs...
Wawaweewa Rice I'm just saying, he should have more knowledge on a topic, then just saying opinionated information.
Todd Fee he's not an expert at headphones, and I think too many people treat him like one which creates this form of "expectation", which is why I'm assuming you expected something less opinionated. I'd say his knowledge is strongest with cameras and video editing, while general on the rest
My god, ur videography is getting every video!
Awesome vid mkbhd.. if i ever need tech advice or update i allways come here, thumbs up
i am using Sennheiser HD 380 pro, as a monitor headphones and they are very good with price 120$!! Test some Sennheiser models please!!!
dat Beats freq response xD made my day! :P
I've never died laughing at a frequency response chart xD I guess Beets by Drew are good for something after all
i just picked up the M20x's for my budget setup and these are amazing, im hoping to get the M50x's in a few years
Hi Marques,
I'm still wondering where you got the frequency response graph for the ATH-M70x from.
Andrew Robertoy Based on reviews, a lot better.
Thomas Riddle headfi?
Everyone talks about Audio Technica and I'm just sittin here, with my Beyerdynamics. Being fucking happy with them.
Yup they are also an excellent choice ;P
Could say the same with my Sennheiser HD598
J-Francois Roy I have both headphones and the hd598 is nowhere near as versatile as the m50x when it comes to travel, portability and the amount of abuse it can take. That said the hd598 is also a much more comfortable and overall better sounding open headphone. The two headphones serve two different purposes. At home I always use my hd598s, but if i'm going anywhere it's always the m50x.
Agreed my HD598s stay at home plugged in an amp and jesus they sound good but I cant really take them with me anywhere I go
m50x are okay, they're just overhyped
So the M50X's sound better, look better, and are more affordable than these newer ones? That makes my choice very clear. Not really a fan at all of these. They totally downgraded Aesthetically I.M.O.
Btw, what FPS did you use? Looked very clear and sharp in 1080p as usual but it looked a bit smoother than usual.
lol the m50's are just overpriced in general.
so many phones sound just as good/better for cheap/same price.
30, you can tell if you click the settings, it would say 1080p60 if it was 60fps
pumpkin1escobar what are you talking about?:D obvious troll
***** Honestly, it depends, like when comparing them to open backs then yeah you can get much better headphones, BUT if you work, listen or do whatever in a semi loud, loud environment then some M50s for 140ish aren't bad at all.
Mine doesn't say the FPS rating, that's why I asked lol
Bought the MTH M50's after your review, one of the best tech related purchases i've ever done. Use 'em every day and the only downside, which was the tightness, diminishes over time.
dude, you are good and honest, you care. Love ALL your reviews. Thanks for all your hard work.
People are reviewing $300 headphones and i'm sitting here with my broken $7 Panasonic in-ears :(
It's been 6 years, im curious on what audio collection you got now
I know a lot of people hate beats and i did for the longest time but i decided to pick up a pair and damn... they improved a lot
are these worth the 200 or so that they are now.
I'd recommend the m50x's over these, in my opinion
+IronMech Dragon I have the m50xs also, m70xs are better for mixing .
+Robbie Swope i can agree, I guess it's all a matter of preference
+IronMech Dragon m70xs are better for mixing as it gives more neutrality to the sound., but the m50xs are great at that and sound great for listeniing.
I like them a lot. If you are looking for a neutral pair of headphones, you'll probably love these. If you are looking for something with emphasized bass, you'll be disappointed by these. if you are coming from M50s, you may be disappointed and find them to be tinny or overly bright.
Listening to this on my M20x. And the 70's are gonna be my next.
301 views and 4.747 likes... Iluminarti confirmed!!!!
New to RUclips?
Ahmed Harbi Probably trolling...
illuminati?? you're bored man..
Nikola Elitsov *illuminatie
Lost me at 300 bucks. I'll pay 80 and get the industry standard Sony MDR -V6
Or the AKG k240
Lol the graph comparing beats to it 😂
the M70xs are fantastic and very neutral. exceptional for audio engineers.
HOWEVER--do be warned that they break easily. especially the swivel hinges. you will have to baby them.
Not recommended as daily drivers for everything. more for serious audio work.
But the sound is impeccable and they are very comfy
I have a lot of work to do if I ever want to have my reviews be as good as this. Awesome video and keep up the awesome work.
New to the channel. I enjoy listening how you speak. Subscribed.
why would anyone travel with their headphones stored anyway?
Leonardo Po maybe ur going on a airplane or something or u need them for schoool
So you won't get mugged when you walk by???
4:52 that surprised me,i thought it was showing different graph for both headphone but nope it was Beats graph ,I almost died choking from laughter
wow is that so lol you should keep that funeral plan in check then
Awesome video marques! The overall quality of your videos is going up really fast!! I must say that I am very impressed.
Keep up your great vids marques! I love them :D
Very good review. I was wondering if the M70X were right for me and you have helped me decide. Thanks.
hmm. i personally like the looks of the m50x better. More rugged, more classic.
Agreed and for the price I might just get the m50s
+Henry Jensen-Waggoner 'still enjoying my m50, should get it bro!!
+Juriasu Kun where would u say to buy them bc I can't find them in any stores like best buys staples ect what about online. Not eBay
Henry Jensen-Waggoner lol of course you cant find m50s in best buy. like how you cant find ipod nano 4th gen at best buy, theyre old tech. Get it from amazon bro
+Danish Fiesta aii ty
And I am here, sitting with my Apple Ear Pods.
::opens MKBHD:: ::confidently hits the like button before the intro:: Because I'm sure that the video is going to have an excellent build quality and premium feel.
The m40xs are still my favorite headphones L0L. The M70Xs have a slight weird tinny sound from sound demos I have heard. The m40xs are accurate af I'd say and I like that for listening to music and mixing/making music.
ya i liked the 40 sound. but i sold mine for other reasons. didnt like the plastic, the cord, or the pads.
Ahhh you scared me for a minute there! I recently just bought the m50x model and I thought these m70s were going to blow away the older model. Whew! Thanks for a great review! Glad I have what I do!
-Gil
A bigger price tag? Lame they should have lowered it, not buying.
-_-
BRUH
Just because they got popular and big now they don't reduce price but inflate on purpose since they know they will sell high
Kon Bruh. ATH was never unpopular. As popular as beats? Maybe not, but they were never unpopular.
And since this is the best pair of headphones they've made yet, the high price is reasonable.
Stop. And just try m40x you will forget everything else
The main difference between Beats by Dr. Dre and Audio Technica is -
Beats is shit,
Audio Technica is not.
***** Lol Audio Technica isn't cheap at all
***** my headphones cost $400 (Sennheiser HD8 DJ, look 'em up) and I still think Beats headphones are shit. Get yo shit together, not everybody wants to be a hipster-ass poser.
***** Shut UP!
***** LOL did u even see this video? beats are crap man. beats are for people who doesnt know what good sound quality sounds like. so come on man. this isnt even discussable ( sry for my english)
This video is 7 years old means audio technica didn't release a new series of headphones yet I guess, makes me a bit confused...
because their product is really Good. Even Musicians use them on Professional Studios. i still use my m40x & M50x for over 10 years.
I finally decided to watch this because I knew if I watched it I would start to crave upgrading from my M50x's... But I'm not THAT big of an editor, so I don't feel bad about staying. Thanks! Awesome video!
