Beats are the bane of my existence. Everyone in my "wealthy" school district, everyone buys beats. If I asked them if they knew what sennheiser or audio technica, they would have absolutely no idea. Also their obsession with apple products...all of them.
For those of you who are watching in 2015, Audio-Technica had come out with the ATH-M50x which is a big improvement to the already amazing regular M50. It has a detachable high-quality audio cable and a better reference sound!
Also, they don't look good, they look really gaudy and tacky, in my opinion. The beats solos are so plasticky looking, it amazes me they cost literally twice as much as the much better sounding and looking audio technica ath-es700s I bought recently. The pros look a little less cheap, but they still don't look good exactly.
I bought a pair of beats studio from a friend and they felt a bit cheap and plasticy. The sound quality was not great either, and the ratio between high, mids and low were really bad. Way too much bass.
I think they do look awesome. you know, like fifty dollars awesome, not one-quarter-thousand awesome. very uncomfortable though ive tried them on and worn them for an hour not a pretty story.

you acctually should! i had beats solo 2.0 but thay got stolen when someone broke in too our house. but anyhow i got the beats pro for like 3 days ago and i have to say that thay are really amazing. the sound the comfortness. that part on that it hurts after a short period of listening is kinda bullshit. you get used to it.
I personally think the m50's look better than the Beats anyway. I got a pair of m50x's recently, and I love them. The look is subdued and classy, not bold and obnoxious like the Beats. They personally are superior in every single category for me. Plus, if you really want crazy, over the top looking headphones, just go to Dbrand and swap out the earcups to spice up your m50x's a little.
I kinda wish there was a deluxe M50x version with a metal build instead of plastic and a less clunky look. It would have both the classy beats look but with the better sound quality (and it would still be cheaper).

Nice! Bought the m40x's for my brother and hes happy with them, I generally prefer wireless for on the go and open backs for when im at home so i bought some JBL's and sennheisers. Sennheisers work great after 5 years :)
well, for almost 10 years, I still use the same beats pro that is shown in the video.. the only thing that breaks is the earcups and the cable, and some exterior scratches.. It may be overpriced, but it still work just fine, not even any problems on the speakers.. I dont know why people hate beats, besides the price..
Just got the 650s for 290$ on amazon brand new, actually got to say I prefer my old 2012 monster beat studios a friend gave me for EDM/rap (where the music is made on a computer, and not with actual instruments, and is typically 320kbps quality max) due to their retarded amount of bass (you could break glass by holding them near it with a bassy song playing, by the phone slamming into it, not the sound vibrations). If you're a basshead, and you get them for free, beats>Sennheiser(not known for their bass, even at max bass EQ they're not even close) For actual high quality recordings and non bassy genres that use actual instruments and not a computer to make, Sennheiser blows them out of the water. I can hear the keys on the piano hitting the bottom and sliding back up, I can hear the finger plucking the string, I can hear spit in the back of singer's throats(which is actually a little gross at times).

A lot of people mainly buy beats because of other people's influences. My friend and I were talking one day and the subject of headphones came up one day. She said that beats are (factually, not opinonly)one of the best headphones ever made. I told her that they definitely see not the best headphones ever made but that one situation told me A lot about beats. Children ask their parents for beats because they think their the best. And honestly, A lot of kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the sound quality in beats and any other headphones.

And they take a ton of treble and mid boost to make them sound right. But the bluetooth and removable jack is kinda cool. Convenience points to beats. But not really sound quality, lol.

Just got my M50X today! So happy with the sound quality. Compared to the previously owned beats, the sound quality is much more clear and deliver a punchier bass notes whereas beats has more of a heavy consistent bassy sound throughout the song for example. If you don't own Audio Tech., do try it as i can wear them all day long and i don't even feel like i am wearing them most of the time as they are so comfortable.

Look at the more expensive Audiotechnica or Sennheiser headphones. YES there are better headphones BUT the price vs sound quality is AMAZING with these headphones. I have the Sennheiser 558s and they are different with an open back (it's an attempt to give a more natural sound with the open back so that the sound isn't bouncing around in the earphone) and they sound def better then under 100 dollars or Beats but there are more expensive ones I could have bought that will give even better mids and highs and other things but the price didn't justify the sound quality.

ATH-M50 are amazing I have both the M-45 and M-50 .I heard music through beats it's alright ,But Audio tech. M-50 destroy's Beats no comparison period. And it's cheaper .
Beats headphones are a scam. With $400 you can pick-up incredible studio monitors that sound amazing. If you want to match the price-to-quality, sound and frequency response, Beats headphones should be selling for $60-80. The cheaper priced M50's can be used for studio monitoring / production, and are just better quality headphones, for less than half the price of Beats.
M50's ARE used some places for studio production, the making of Wasting Light by the Foo fighters shows Dave Grohl wearing a pair while listening to playback in a vocal booth and playing guitar while recording, take from that what you will, but, I replaced a boomy sounding pair of Sennheisers with M50's as their frequency response is way flatter than most other headphones up to &NZ500-600

Because of the price of Beats, I was determined to find something a lot cheaper, but great sound quality, so in my research I came across this review and went ahead and bought the Audio Technica ATH-M50 and I must say....these are the best muthaf*#*@in headphones I have EVER heard in my life! Yes, Apple is overpriced and lacks some very basic functionality like a proper tool for multitasking as an example. But to be honest, everything what apple does, they do better than other companies. Apple products are definetly easier to use for a person whos not very talented with Computerstuff. They do look better (and thats completely okay, to pay for that. I mean you go to other stores besides H&M to look better, dont you? So please dont lie to yourself. And just as an example: the trackpad on their macbooks, is still by far the best and most precise and most fun to use trackpad on laptops on the whole market. A macbook is the only laptop where you can use Photoshop quite good without a mouse. The iPhone just works better than every other phone, because design is not only on the outside. Sound better, can drive less efficient headphones, have huge potential expandable storage, and even cost less if you pick one of the cheaper models. What about if you also want a phone? I've used both Android and iOS devices, and really don't see much of a difference. They both use similar UIs and are based on what are structurally very similar kinds of code under the hood. (Linux is the basis for Android, and FreeBSD forms the basis of all of Apple's products. Both are at least partly POSIX-compliant, but this isn't relevant to the average user.) If you want to annihilate any phone on audio quality, you get a portable DAC/amp, and this is true whether or not you start out with an iPhone. FiiO makes some good ones, and there's also the LH Labs Geek Out V2+, iFi Micro iDSD, Oppo HA-2, and higher up on the price tier, there's the Chord Mojo, just to name a few of the better options. They even look pretty nice and I would rate them as more solidly-built than an Apple "equivalent." Ex.: Almost all FiiO products have brushed aluminum cases. No, what Apple has going for it is popularity and widespread coverage. I actually find Apple harder to use in a lot of cases because in the mad drive to oversimplify literally EVERYTHING, they also inconvenience people who have even fairly rudimentary tech skills which you can realistically expect most people under the age of 30 to have and regularly use. For the purposes of this topic, iTunes is the biggest example I can name. It has DRM, which makes it more difficult to play your files on something like JRiver Media Player or Foobar2000, and more difficult to upload those files to a phone or digital audio player. You have to extract those files and then either find something capable of playing Apple's proprietary formats, or you need to transcode them to something which IS commonly used, like MP3 or FLAC format. Why not just get them in those formats by default from other services, skipping this entire mess of a step, and upload them to whatever music player you own already? Oh, right, if you own an Apple device, you have to also have to copy any of your files into your iTunes library, which takes up space and creates this same problem just to get them to work on the iPhone or iPod at all. Not to mention that transcoding lossy audio compression formats causes the audio to degrade in quality. If you do it over and over again, you'll notice a difference. Source: I owned an iPod Classic Gen 6, which by the way used a mechanical hard drive to attain its high storage numbers. This resulted in the piece of shit breaking twice in one year. I've never had this kind of trouble with any other portable media device. I had a Sansa Clip, Sansa Fuze, and now I use a FiiO X5 and a Chord Mojo, and am quite happy with that arrangement.

The best advice for learning good sound from speakers or headphones is to learn about listener fatigue. Then listen with someone knowledgeable in the subject that can show you the difference between accurate and impressive. Also, all speakers/headphones to be evaluated must be at the same volume. Not just close, the same volume. The louder of the two, even a tiny bit, has the advantage and can fool you. Electronics look complicated in design and speakers/ headphone look simple, there's the rub. Amplifying a sound accurately is pretty easy. Transducing a sound (changing an electrical impulse into a physical motion, moving a speaker or headphone diaphragm) is very difficult to do accurately although the components of the speaker/headphone appear much simpler than the electronics. Transduction is where problems occur.
H Boogie Don't forget the removable headphone jack (although I wish it didn't have a proprietary locking system, I really want to use a cable with playback controls for my phone, and I can't).
they don't really lack bass, they're more geared towards audio technicians and producers. they have a flat frequency response meaning the bass isn't boosted like beats are. you can always use an equalizer and they get a lot of bass.
Brayden Kulbacki yes, i know they are made for monitoring. and they don't lack bass for that. but as a everyday headphone they can be a little boring. i could use an equalizer but there is difference between hardware made sound signature and software made. just my preference not a fact.

A thing to consider aswell is that you might not even hear all the things. I'm a music producer and in the time i've done that i created a kind of sixth sense i hear a lot more detail than before i produced music. I'm now used to listening to all these little sounds, so you can actually train yourself to hear more detail. That's why some people think Beats sound amazing because they don't hear all the crap that is coming out of it. Music isn't about bass, it's about hearing all the nice details what completes an track. Something you definitly miss with every Beats headphones. They were not made for sound quality, they were made for the average consumer that likes heavy bass music and don't care about the mids and highs (and the price tag off course).

Listened to some of those £300 Beats headphones in the store, they sound noticeably less good than the £30 Panasonic HTX7s I have at home, let alone the Grados I used to have.
Sennheisers are not that great. I have a pair of hd439s that i got for a cheap price. However, the build quality is not very good, the plastic feels weak. Secondly, if you want a tighter fit, don't go with the 449's. They put barely any pressure on your ears. While this is more comfortable, it allows for crazy leaking and bass that is much weaker. I'd personally go ath-m50.
Izzy Latham Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, higher end sennheisers are great. The clarity sennheisers possess in the higher end is pretty great. However, there is so little isolation in these hd4xx model that the bass is inadequate (to me).
I was in the same exact position a few months ago, but settled for the KOSS Pro 3AAs instead. They were ever so slightly less crisp than the sennheisers which were winning for me at the time, but had much stronger and deeper bass (down to 17hz!!) and EQ can get back the softer high end. Also, they were only $59.99 too so that pretty much sealed the deal. Koss is a very respected brand too, my dad's radio station has always used them exclusively in the studios.

Just figured I'd lump my experience in, my ATH-M50s are 3 years old now. Aduio quality is still just as good as new or damn near (I check every once in a while against my bf's rarely used pair), and after THREE YEARS of being stepped on, sat on, rolled over, and thrown around.....nothing is broken. These headphones are indestructible. I give up. Best $150 I've ever spent.

Just got the 650s for 290$ on amazon brand new, actually got to say I prefer my old 2012 monster beat studios a friend gave me for EDM/rap (where the music is made on a computer, and not with actual instruments, and is typically 320kbps quality max) due to their retarded amount of bass (you could break glass by holding them near it with a bassy song playing, by the phone slamming into it, not the sound vibrations). If you're a basshead, and you get them for free, beats>Sennheiser(not known for their bass, even at max bass EQ they're not even close)
For actual high quality recordings and non bassy genres that use actual instruments and not a computer to make, Sennheiser blows them out of the water. I can hear the keys on the piano hitting the bottom and sliding back up, I can hear the finger plucking the string, I can hear spit in the back of singer's throats(which is actually a little gross at times).

A lot of people mainly buy beats because of other people's influences. My friend and I were talking one day and the subject of headphones came up one day. She said that beats are (factually, not opinonly)one of the best headphones ever made. I told her that they definitely see not the best headphones ever made but that one situation told me A lot about beats. Children ask their parents for beats because they think their the best. And honestly, A lot of kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference between the sound quality in beats and any other headphones.

Just got my M50X today! So happy with the sound quality. Compared to the previously owned beats, the sound quality is much more clear and deliver a punchier bass notes whereas beats has more of a heavy consistent bassy sound throughout the song for example. If you don't own Audio Tech., do try it as i can wear them all day long and i don't even feel like i am wearing them most of the time as they are so comfortable.

Look at the more expensive Audiotechnica or Sennheiser headphones. YES there are better headphones BUT the price vs sound quality is AMAZING with these headphones. I have the Sennheiser 558s and they are different with an open back (it's an attempt to give a more natural sound with the open back so that the sound isn't bouncing around in the earphone) and they sound def better then under 100 dollars or Beats but there are more expensive ones I could have bought that will give even better mids and highs and other things but the price didn't justify the sound quality.

Beats headphones are a scam. With $400 you can pick-up incredible studio monitors that sound amazing. If you want to match the price-to-quality, sound and frequency response, Beats headphones should be selling for $60-80.
The cheaper priced M50's can be used for studio monitoring / production, and are just better quality headphones, for less than half the price of Beats.
M50's ARE used some places for studio production, the making of Wasting Light by the Foo fighters shows Dave Grohl wearing a pair while listening to playback in a vocal booth and playing guitar while recording, take from that what you will, but, I replaced a boomy sounding pair of Sennheisers with M50's as their frequency response is way flatter than most other headphones up to &NZ500-600
I'm just simply amazed by the low price of the m50's first time i heard of them and listened to them.
They easily compete with phones higher up in price tags.

Apple products are definetly easier to use for a person whos not very talented with Computerstuff. They do look better (and thats completely okay, to pay for that. I mean you go to other stores besides H&M to look better, dont you? So please dont lie to yourself. And just as an example: the trackpad on their macbooks, is still by far the best and most precise and most fun to use trackpad on laptops on the whole market. A macbook is the only laptop where you can use Photoshop quite good without a mouse.

Sound better, can drive less efficient headphones, have huge potential expandable storage, and even cost less if you pick one of the cheaper models. What about if you also want a phone? I've used both Android and iOS devices, and really don't see much of a difference. They both use similar UIs and are based on what are structurally very similar kinds of code under the hood. (Linux is the basis for Android, and FreeBSD forms the basis of all of Apple's products. Both are at least partly POSIX-compliant, but this isn't relevant to the average user.) If you want to annihilate any phone on audio quality, you get a portable DAC/amp, and this is true whether or not you start out with an iPhone. FiiO makes some good ones, and there's also the LH Labs Geek Out V2+, iFi Micro iDSD, Oppo HA-2, and higher up on the price tier, there's the Chord Mojo, just to name a few of the better options. They even look pretty nice and I would rate them as more solidly-built than an Apple "equivalent." Ex.: Almost all FiiO products have brushed aluminum cases.
No, what Apple has going for it is popularity and widespread coverage. I actually find Apple harder to use in a lot of cases because in the mad drive to oversimplify literally EVERYTHING, they also inconvenience people who have even fairly rudimentary tech skills which you can realistically expect most people under the age of 30 to have and regularly use. For the purposes of this topic, iTunes is the biggest example I can name. It has DRM, which makes it more difficult to play your files on something like JRiver Media Player or Foobar2000, and more difficult to upload those files to a phone or digital audio player. You have to extract those files and then either find something capable of playing Apple's proprietary formats, or you need to transcode them to something which IS commonly used, like MP3 or FLAC format. Why not just get them in those formats by default from other services, skipping this entire mess of a step, and upload them to whatever music player you own already? Oh, right, if you own an Apple device, you have to also have to copy any of your files into your iTunes library, which takes up space and creates this same problem just to get them to work on the iPhone or iPod at all. Not to mention that transcoding lossy audio compression formats causes the audio to degrade in quality. If you do it over and over again, you'll notice a difference.
Source: I owned an iPod Classic Gen 6, which by the way used a mechanical hard drive to attain its high storage numbers. This resulted in the piece of shit breaking twice in one year. I've never had this kind of trouble with any other portable media device. I had a Sansa Clip, Sansa Fuze, and now I use a FiiO X5 and a Chord Mojo, and am quite happy with that arrangement.

There is a site that you can buy Chinese knock offs for like $5. So if you are going to buy them to be "cool" then get a fake pair.
The best advice for learning good sound from speakers or headphones is to learn about listener fatigue. Then listen with someone knowledgeable in the subject that can show you the difference between accurate and impressive. Also, all speakers/headphones to be evaluated must be at the same volume. Not just close, the same volume. The louder of the two, even a tiny bit, has the advantage and can fool you.
Electronics look complicated in design and speakers/ headphone look simple, there's the rub. Amplifying a sound accurately is pretty easy. Transducing a sound (changing an electrical impulse into a physical motion, moving a speaker or headphone diaphragm) is very difficult to do accurately although the components of the speaker/headphone appear much simpler than the electronics. Transduction is where problems occur.

i have them and i love them, only complaint is a slight lack of bass in my preference.
they don't really lack bass, they're more geared towards audio technicians and producers. they have a flat frequency response meaning the bass isn't boosted like beats are. you can always use an equalizer and they get a lot of bass.

A thing to consider aswell is that you might not even hear all the things. I'm a music producer and in the time i've done that i created a kind of sixth sense i hear a lot more detail than before i produced music. I'm now used to listening to all these little sounds, so you can actually train yourself to hear more detail. That's why some people think Beats sound amazing because they don't hear all the crap that is coming out of it. Music isn't about bass, it's about hearing all the nice details what completes an track. Something you definitly miss with every Beats headphones. They were not made for sound quality, they were made for the average consumer that likes heavy bass music and don't care about the mids and highs (and the price tag off course).

Audio Technica ATH-M50 vs. Sennheiser HD 449. I'm still doubtful about which one I should get. What's your opinions?
Sennheisers are not that great. I have a pair of hd439s that i got for a cheap price. However, the build quality is not very good, the plastic feels weak. Secondly, if you want a tighter fit, don't go with the 449's. They put barely any pressure on your ears. While this is more comfortable, it allows for crazy leaking and bass that is much weaker. I'd personally go ath-m50.
Izzy Latham Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, higher end sennheisers are great. The clarity sennheisers possess in the higher end is pretty great. However, there is so little isolation in these hd4xx model that the bass is inadequate (to me).
449 has a very bad/poor bass. Only the clearity is good. A very good headphone is the Sony MDR-V55. Awesome quality for a great price.
I was in the same exact position a few months ago, but settled for the KOSS Pro 3AAs instead. They were ever so slightly less crisp than the sennheisers which were winning for me at the time, but had much stronger and deeper bass (down to 17hz!!) and EQ can get back the softer high end. Also, they were only $59.99 too so that pretty much sealed the deal. Koss is a very respected brand too, my dad's radio station has always used them exclusively in the studios.

Just figured I'd lump my experience in, my ATH-M50s are 3 years old now. Aduio quality is still just as good as new or damn near (I check every once in a while against my bf's rarely used pair), and after THREE YEARS of being stepped on, sat on, rolled over, and thrown around.....nothing is broken. These headphones are indestructible. I give up. Best $150 I've ever spent.

they don't sound as good as other headphones that cost the same but the sound quality is still good. i bought mine purely because of ANC and by far the most comfortable to wear. not everyone is looking just for audio
