    Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the southern range of the Gravelly Mountains in southwest Montana. The Beaverhead-DeerLodge National Forest is home to the West Fork of the Madison River and is only 34 miles from the western boundary of Yellowstone National Park. The Gravelly’s, as locals refer to the range, consist of 310,000 acres of primitive and rugged mountains divided by only nine road systems. The climate here is a subalpine climate with summer temperatures rarely cresting 80 degrees and winter temperatures dipping to ten degrees below zero. It isn’t uncommon for frosts to occur at any time of year here.
    Toward the south end of the Grevelly’s the West Fork of the Madison River sits in a valley bottom that starts at 7,000 feet in elevation and rises or over 9,000 feet at nearby peaks. On the west end of the drainage lies Buford creek. The hills around Buford Creek are covered in a patchwork of thick stands of Engelmann Spruce, Subalpine Fir, Whitebark Pine and pockets of quaking aspen trees interrupted by expansive stretches of grass and brush. When you think of prime grizzly habitat the Gravelly’s are what comes to mind.
    Common animals here include White Tailed Deer, elk and moose with the dominant predators being black bears, cougars, coyotes, and wolves, with Grizzly Bears increasingly being observed by visitors.
    On Sunday September 12th, 2010, Matt Menge was enjoying an archery elk hunting trip with one of his friends, whom we will call Mark. The Bozeman native had planned the trip with his hunting partner over the past few weeks, and the men knew right where they wanted to go.
    The open meadows of the lower part of Buford Creek give way to thick patches of trees along the hillsides. Elk hunters use the edges between meadows and stands of timber to look for elk sign and game trails to give them insight into where the elk herds may be bedded for the day. Each evening the elk herd would make their way from their day beds to the river at the bottom of the valley. After the elk drink about 4 gallons of water each day, they make their way back to their day beds in the early morning to rest during the heat of the day.
    Now a little bit of information about bear anatomy and archery hunting is needed to understand just how this attack unfolded. Archery hunters typically dress head to toe in camouflage clothing so they can best blend into the plants around where they are hunting. Deer, elk and moose see bright colors, like blaze orange, as mottled grey and tan tones, but bears see them vividly like humans do. Bears have color vision so wearing camouflage can make it more difficult for them to see a person. Bears also have round pupils and forward facing eyes which give them depth and detail of visual perception. If what they are looking at is not at the point their eyes are focusing then the image lacks detail, much like our peripheral vision. Prey animals have horizontal pupils giving them a less detailed but broader visual field. These visual adaptions allow them to react quickly to the movements of a predator without identifying exactly what it is. A basic rule is this, if your camo can fool a human’s eye, it can fool a bear's eye.
    Archery hunters frequently use natural scents to mask any human odor that may emanate from their own bodies. Many use scent neutralizers to remove the perfumes in laundry soap making their presence in the woods as hard to detect to the sensitive noses of elk, and for that matter, grizzly bears.
    Matt and Mark had planned a hunt starting before sun up and wound their way through the thick timber until mid morning. Having seen tracks and sign they cautiously stalked the herd from different approach angles, working themselves into a position to shoot.
    On this Sunday, events had unfolded much like the others. The men had begun hiking before sunrise. Matt and Mark had split up to stalk elk in different areas and Matt had hit the jackpot. Is some dark timber he had located a herd and was sneaking through the trees. His eyes were scanning the brush for the telltale white patch on the rump of any nearby elk. As he carefully stalked his way through the trees, the quiet suddenly erupted into a rapid series of brush pops and tree limbs cracking. Matt turned around to see a large grizzly bear charging toward him from only a few yards away.
    Now Matt wasn’t one of those unprepared types. Apart from his bow and arrows, he packed a hunting knife and a canister of bear spray. His bear spray was held in a holster on his belt. He knew he was in grizzly country, and having his bear spray easy to access was pivotal.

    Just the thought of a large, angry bear running towards me is horrifying. I'm glad he survived and recovered from his injuries. Bears are territorial creatures and will sometimes attack a human because they perceive them the same as they would an intruding bear.

    Yes to your last question. I think Matt and the bear were tracking the same elk. The bear did not want to share and was upset that Matt was competing for the same game.

    I think it was the sow with cubs. The reason being is the attack is similar to other attacks by mama bears. I am not at all surprised he didn’t see the grizzly. He was focused on hunting for elk. He had no reason to watch behind or to the side. He was focused on scanning the area for the blond rump of an elk and ignored everything else. Crucial mistake of many hunters.

    Thank you. As an archery hunter I really do understand. And seconds count. Must gun hunters have one in the chamber. Where most bear spray takes valuable seconds to deploy. I know they make training bear spray. I have never seen anyone practice drawing bear spray. And when seconds count training and practice may pay off.

    Matt was looking for tell tale "white" patches of elk rumps. He would've had any breeze to his face. Even with scent guards they can still detect something "off". The bear apparently downwind or downdraft (evening?) caught this strange scent but was confused on seeing "trees" camo move and felt a threat. I'm sure she'd stalked the scent to a point.. then charged. Glad he made it! The predator became the prey. At least human hunters don't bludgeon our prey.. for the most part.

      @@GVH1305 yeah, the whole point of my comment. You basically need to walk with it, in hand, if you want to prevent 99.9 or whatever they claim. So many people getting mauled with a can of bearspray dangling from their pack.

    Another story depicting how quickly a bear attack can happen. Makes you feel like there’s nothing you can do if you’re in the wrong place at the wrong time. That being said, whether you carry bear spray or a gun, it better be immediately accessible. Chest holster preferable. And you better have practiced to be able to draw within 1-2 seconds. Personally, if I was in grizzly country and was in brush/trees with less than 50 yards visibility in all directions, I’d have my hand nearly on my pistol, or at the ready. A bow Hunter a couple years ago got charged from 20-30 yards, but luckily he had practiced for that event (because that’s what reality is with lots of bear attacks) and got 7 shots off in 3 second or so with his Glock 20 10mm to stop the attack. That’s literally what it might take

  • @metalmamasue3680
    @metalmamasue3680 4 месяца назад +1

    I think there's been enough attacks on elk hunters that they should always have bear spray which may work on curious bears, a powerful handgun, (especially if they're archery hunters) and a good knife too in case they don't have time for bear spray or drawing their handgun. You never know what may save your life, risking it with just a bow and arrows seems foolish to me.

    I agree with one of the officials who said archery hunters do what they do and bears do what they do. In this case it seems that everybody played by the rules. The surprised bear bit and left, the hunter checked to see if his legs worked and walked out and got medical help. Welcome to the great outdoors. Too bad bow and arrow couldn’t get to his spray sooner…..

    • @scarybearattacks
      @scarybearattacks  4 месяца назад

      It is an accepted risk but not only archery hunters have to accept this risk. Hikers, campers, etc. all have to face the reality that when they go into the woods, and sometimes in the city, the possibility of running into a bear is never nill.

  • @terrythornock6468
    @terrythornock6468 4 месяца назад

    Yes Sir, I do believe the bear which brought on the attack was hunting the same herd of elk with her cub(s). I think Matt had approached the herd and unfortunately, the bear with the wind in his face. This is how he got way too close to the bear without her being aware of him.
    No successful archery hunter would ever wear bells or other noise makers just to be Bear Safe, as those things would also allow the elk to hear him and disappear long before he got close enough to make a shot with the bow!!!!

  • @princehogan3564
    @princehogan3564 4 месяца назад

    In this case he was in the wrong place at the wrong time. Both he and the bear. The was probably more than likely hunting the elk just the man. And the bear got spooked and attacked.
