    My hairdresser has just told me to start washing my hair with my head upside down as the back of my scalp wasn’t getting enough rinsing action in particular. I had noticed some scalp irritation and had been thinking about getting scrubs or the Sunday Riley liquid exfoliant. Three washes in I know that I don’t need to spend more money right now, altering my technique was all that was required.

    • @katiedemski2419

      Totally recommend trying using the Ordinary glycolic toner as a scalp exfoliating treatment once or twice a month. It’s much more affordable than the Sunday Riley

    This video is a direct testimony to what a great haircut can do. Simplicity really is key in having great hair and having a stylist that really knows their stuff and cares about the health/integrity of your hair is paramount; so big ups to Jude for being a great stylist. Ive watched this video 3 times and I love your energy and your honesty about what you don't know. My hair is nothing like yours and when you explained that it may not be helpful for those of us with coils/kinkier textures, I appreciate that you recognize that and still wanted to give a good video. I actually am planning on trying the C&K Tonik as it can be used on curlier textures. I love this video because I just love big hair and woman you have some foxy momma hair!!!!

    An aside about hair typing: most hairstylists do not believe in hair-typing. Mainly because most humans have more than one “type” of hair on their head. Curly hair can be fine. Straight hair can be coarse.
    I have natural thick fine hair with multiple curl patterns that within that. The programming around hairtyping is steeped in anti-blackness and the idea that their is “good” or “bad” hair. Or that certain types of hair are “easier”. In fact the chart was made by Oprah’s hairstylist while he was trying to sell his products and he originally didn’t even include “black hair”on the chart. And when this was called out he stated that he thought “black hair” should just be straightened. Ive been on a journey of learning about my hair and understanding it and deprogramming myself from these ideas.
    Listening to natural hair cosmetologists has changed my view completely. I am washing more frequently, using less products and my curls have never looked better and it’s made me excited about my hair for the first time ever.

    • @minilions
      @minilions 3 года назад +2

      Yes! I commented something similar. I have curly fine hair and products have to be really light for me or else it gets flat immediately.

    • @HannahLouisePoston
      @HannahLouisePoston  3 года назад +46

      Ameerah, thank you so much for taking the time to leave this comment. I very much assumed that the hair-typing chart was part of an inclusive way of thinking about hair, and I'm horrified to hear that the guy who started it was promoting such poisonous ideas (again, I assumed the opposite!). I'm sorry that I didn't look into it more thoroughly. Hair is political and I wanted to include imagery that celebrates all hair types and makes it clear that all hair is equally wonderful. I didn't do enough, I wish I had done more, and I will do more next time

    • @listeningatwork8719
      @listeningatwork8719 3 года назад +14

      I think that the discussion of hair-typing has evolved over the years. I am in my 50s and I remember when Oprah’s stylist developed that system. It was sort of revolutionary in that it started a discussion about curly hair and some different practices of hair care that had not been part of the mainstream discussion about hair. I do remember African-type hair textures being included, so I’m surprised to read this description. But I also remember Andre being a big proponent of hair straightening, and of perms to create looser curl patterns. In the early days of the internet, the online naturally curly community adopted Andre’s numbering system as a way to facilitate discussion and share tips that enabled some of us curlies to wear our hair naturally for the first time. As a curly girl, I felt it was a very positive thing at the time. But I agree, it’s time to move on from this way of speaking about hair. I guess what I’m trying to say is that there is both good and bad history in this method of hair-typing.

    • @MissPopeyes22
      @MissPopeyes22 3 года назад +2

      Same! Im Arab and have frizzy curly, sometimes dry, hair. I noticed when I loaded my hair with styling products it dulled my hair and it was horrible. I was shocked by the curly girl method because it’s loaded with a crap ton of products and twenty steps and it never made sense to me. I blow dry my hair when I want to and leave it curly when O want to and condition it like normal. None of the no poo, cowash stuff they recommend for curly hair. I also only use leave in and serum when air drying. Trial and error helped find the right products for me.

    I recently stopped washing my (short, wavyish) hair completely and I am SO happy about it. I used to only wash my hair once a week with Head and Shoulders - any other shampoo would leave me with super noticeable dandruff, but my hair would get super oily between washes and then SUPER fluffy right after washing which I don't like as a look. In May my mom told me she had stopped washing hers over the pandemic and I gave it a try, just rinsing my hair thoroughly with hot water twice a week at first. My hair now permanently lives in the former sweet spot between fluffy and oily, and my dandruff is not any more of a problem than it was before (and it only took like, two weeks of it being super oily before it adjusted). I do think one of those scalp brushes would be helpful though - I'll pick one up soon. Of course, I think this largely works because neither my mom nor I put any product in our hair to style it. I figure if we did, we'd need to wash it out occasionally at least. But I can't believe I spent so many years hating washing my hair and all along I could have just... not.

    I've never seen someone have almost my exact hair, I think we're hair twins! The color and textures seem so so similar, ski this video was very valuable to me lol! I've been going through my own hair journey the last year, because while it looks quite similar to yours without stylers in it, it is TOTALLY curly with them, and I had no idea until a year ago. I had been straightening my hair since highschool! Anyway, I'd just add one thing to your routine that I've learned from the curly community, which is see l it seems to be important to use a clarifying shampoo once in a while for the same reason you learned that you need to exfoliate your scalp. Cowashes and other products can sort of build up and... suffocate? the scalp? Lol I don't know exactly, but they say it's important!

    Ok niche but fun information if anyone is interested. The Hair Story Hair Powder mechanism is very reminiscent of antique wig powder mechanism traditionally made out of a small set of wooden and leather bellows.
    The bellows would be filled up with a scented powder mixture to spout onto the wig after styling.
    The Hair Story product is in the same vein😄 Just modernized!

    My hair is similar to yours, thick and slightly wavy. I only use a shampoo and wash my hair more than you do. Normally I just blow dry my hair, but if it's hot and I don't want to blow dry it, I let it dry on its own. The next morning I often find it's still damp, especially at the back (which is interesting because I sleep on my stomach) - it's icky. The drying technique you described is interesting and I'll give it a shot, thanks:)

I have thick coarse hair that lacks volume at the crown; I sleep with wet hair; I don’t brush and assumed that was good; I always air dry because it takes 45mins to an hour to blow dry it!!! Here to say I too seriously underestimated the power of the right cut in creating the shape and texture I always wanted. I got a very similar cut on what I thought was my lank, only very slightly wavy hair-y’all I have proper CURLS. It’s completely changed the way I style and care for my hair too. I used to get pretty miserable scalp psoriasis-like irritation and lesions from wet hair, but air drying works so much better for me now and I can attest that Tonik feels much more like a treatment than a styling product. I also highly recommend Rabbit Brush shag spray- magical texture like the salt spray of my dreams but not at all drying.

    I just figured out my easiest hair maintenance routine and my hair also looks better than ever. I colour my hair once a year, cut it 1-2 a year. Wash it once a week plus curl it the next morning (30mins). Daily styling is dry shampoo if needed (1-3 times a week max), brush it out (I like it sleek vs piecey) and maybe run a little serum or oil through it for shine. I don’t tie it up because it makes it dirtier faster. The only reason I colour it once a year is to dry it out a bit so the curls stays better. Weirdly my hair still looks healthy even though I use heat almost every week.

    A haircut can really make all the difference. I have sensitive/breakout prone scalp but dry hairs. So my scalp likes to be washed/clean but my actual hairs dry out with too much washing and get limp with too much conditioning. So it’s just finding a balance and less heat styling makes a big difference and the cut enables me to not heat style and still have a fab look.

    To air dry your hair in sections you could use velcro rollers. The big 2 inch ones can just be put under the roots without wrapping the length of the hair around them. That way it will dry away from your scalp and with volume. Also I just find there to be something glamorous about hair rollers and I don't know why.

    I have very similar hair to you and I basically gave the same directions for a haircut but I got something much closer to a mullet than I wanted :( I agree that a mullet can look SO cool on some people, I think I'm just not enough of a babe to pull it off. I'm learning to live with it, but I wish it looked more like your hair.

      p.s. my hairstylist also suggested New Wash but was out of it so I was supposed to order online. When I got home I was kind of shocked by how expensive it is and it seems like there are mixed reviews if it does anything. Do you think it is worth it? My hairstylist said my hair felt really dry and needs more moisture, does it help with that?

  • @ellyt82

    Really enjoyed your talk on hair! Unfortunately, I haven’t come across any hairstylist who understood and was able to execute something like that in Boston. I have lived here for 5 years and went to 12 different stylists! I always end up having to fix it by styling it so it looks less horrific, and hope that it would grow out soon. Lesson learned for me, just asked for the simplistic basic cut. Perhaps I need to fly to L.A or SF to get a haircut!

    I'm so excited for this. I have the same hair type and I've definitely used your product recs and tips in the past. I definitely develop a hair pillow at the back of my neck and while I've had my stylist thin it out as much as possible, I probably need to brush it more. I love the R&CO cactus shampoo but I felt like it kind of fried my hair. I have color processed hair so I get plenty of texture that way. I have hair powder I got from the drugstore for less than $5 from the brand "GOT 2 BE" It works great.

      I forgot to say this but I think the R&CO might be partly responsible for my dry scalp. That dichotomous earth :)

    My hairdresser also uses Cult + King and recently added the Hairstory stuff to her lineup. She washed my hair with the New Wash stuff last time I got a cut and I really liked it. Although I haven't been a huge fan of the C+K products on my fine curls (left it kind of limp and frizzy). I can't deny they are beautifully packaged and smell good though.

    I just got New Wash 2 days ago and was about to try it for the first time but was shocked how small the bag was and I know I am gonna go through it quickly. So I was wondering what is the diff between New Wash and a Wen Cleansing Conditioner? Has anyone used either that can comment?

    • @sharroon7574
      @sharroon7574 3 года назад +2

      I used Wen many years ago and it was decent but not amazing and I found I needed to shampoo normally once in a while for the best hair, I tried it again a few years ago and stopped because it smelled way stronger. I would never use Wen after the hair loss lawsuit.

    • @karlahdz04
      @karlahdz04 3 года назад +1

      @@sharroon7574 I used Wen yeeeeeears ago when it first came out but honestly didnt remember my specific thoughts but remember I never repurchased after I finished the first bottle cause it just couldnt handle Florida humidity. But now that I live in California my hair needs have changed. I actually just finished the first order of New Wash this past weekend and I can see a diff in my hair but I couldnt fully ditch my scalp psoriasis shampoo. I need to still use that 1-2 times a week but followed by New Wash my hair doesnt feel as stripped. Also just started to use Cult+King styling products and more than New Wash, I think these are keepers. Will continue to try all these out but it’s good to know about the Wen lawsuit. This was the reason I stopped using Devacurl. I was loosing so much hair and couldnt figure out why, then all the similar claims popped up and I switched to Olaplex and I think I may return to them soon. N°3, N°4, N°5 my hair seemed to really enjoy and my scalp had the least amount of issues while I was using them.

    My hair are very similar to yours. And I believe, your hair can be even more texturised if you try the curly girl method.
    I mean:
    1) no brushing with a brush at all. All the brushing is done with the fingers during the conditioning.
    2) microfibra towel instead of a cotton one.
    3) squishing it with your hands with some texturising cream while it's very wet (I love Davines curl building serum)
    4) take them up in a microfibre towel for 30 min to form the texture. And then let them dry by themselves.

      Yeah I definitely think Hannah's hair could be wavier/curlier if she conditions her hair with squish to condish style.

    How have you found putting your hair into buns and ponytails and the like, since getting the new cut? I'm a Mama and my hair is up most of the time, and I would love a cut like this, but I am nervous about constantly worrying about flyaway or having to use a trillion hair pins!

    Lol i have that exact hair brush from amazon and i love it but be sure not to store it out in the open face up. I did that and a crap ton of dust collected in the boar/nylon bristles and below it. Although some of the fuzz might have been from my hair tho to be fair

    I like the look, but I think it would be a lot of work for me. I have two different hair textures, if I section my hair from my ears, the bottom is like 1a-1b and the top is 2b-2c.. even if I have just a tiny bit of layering, the bottom pieces come through stick straight underneath 😩 I'd like the 90s long layered look, but I don't think I could keep styling it..

    If you’re using a cowash or should definitely be clarifying and deep conditioning. I mean everyone should do that no matter what but especially if you’re only using co wash
