It's so refreshing to hear someone say on youtube that they simply can't afford to buy all of the beautiful things, because so many other youtubers either get heaps of PR or spend a crazy amount of money per month on beauty. I budget, and I average about £60 per month and that is for all beauty purchases

Weird fashion muppet is actually one of my friends' personal aesthetic to a tee and i will absolutely be delivering that turn of phrase to them. (LOVE the hat, by the way.) Also, this was a really pleasant and positive counterweight to the other video, not because the other video was particularly pro-consumption or outlandish but because it wasn't, and this little peek behind the curtain at the magician creating the Wizard of Oz that is shopping responsibly was a good reminder

When you put a picture of that set from Doen on the screen, I thought to myself, I want that! And then I realized that I just wanted it to take the exact photo that the model was in. If I did that, I would post it on Instagram and my followers (all 50 of them) would like it and then what would happen with the set? What other utility might it have? None, for me, because my life doesn’t involve wearing beautiful things right now. And that’s the thought process I go through every time I see a clothing ad

I do a similar thing with browsing poshmark or the real real for an item seconahand after seeing it new on the store's website. Something about seeing the sellers' real pictures of the garments laid out on their beds or whatever really brings it home that it's just a garment, and not the fantasy I was imagining and that helps quell the urge to buy the new thing

Another thing I find helpful is that when I do look up the item I want second hand, I see how the item wore with use and often times the item didn’t wear well. 🥴 It ends up being like the guy you had a crush on in high school and now he’s not looking so hot anymore. 😂

My husband asked me a question once that I ask myself all the time to help me distance from that breathless need I feel when wanting something sometimes. We were looking at a gorgeous table setting in a William Sonoma, and it was just a fantasy table; I was down the rabbit hole 🐇 🕳 imagining the fabulous dinner party I could have if I had these beautiful things. And he asked me, so gently, “would you be buying this for the life you have, or for the life you wish you have?” And my god, he was right! I don’t have the inclination or space for dinner parties. These beautiful things would a cabinet and they would them become more extra stuff. Remembering that really helps me. I like looking at Martha Stewart worthy home wares, but I have no desire to be Martha Stewart. It’s an important difference.

You should try re-dying your balloon pants, that could make a good video. I find just rit dye from the store does an excellent job refreshing faded black clothing. I only wear black and I find redying clothes back to the blackest black can refresh my love for old pieces.

I was really going back and forth on whether or not to replace the one pair of black skinny jeans I own, but are very faded at the seams. But after hearing about your positive experience with dying, I'm going to give that a shot first. 😊 do you just follow the instructions on the packaging or do you have any tips?

    • @Saffron333
      @Saffron333 2 года назад +20

@@stacygarcia6201 I basically follow the directions. The more natural fibers a garment has the better rit dye works. I have never tried the method where you dye them in the washing machine because I am too scared. I always just heat up a big pot of water on the stove and add the dye and salt and or vinegar, turn off the stove, wet the clothes in the sink before shoving them into the pot and stir it up with a nonporous spoon. Then I add a lid, and let everything sit over night. The following day I carefully dump everything into the kitchen sink and rinse rinse rinse for absolutely eons! Then I wash everything in the washer per the dying instructions. Since I only wear black I do as many pieces as I can fit in the pot. It always makes me feel like a sorceress stirring my cauldron.

Yes! I sort stuff out over a year or so and then dye everything. Also works well for jeans that are too light blue. I then dye them black and they turn out a lovely blacky dark blue. Then it's like having new jeans :) only have to check the seams before, as they dont take on the colour.

For me the act of looking on a site and finding the things I want like I'm going to buy them is fun so I know not to pull the trigger right then. I love the hat - very summer witch vibes in my opinion! I think hearing about the elimination process in addition to your decision process is really valuable and interesting. This weekend I wandered around Barnes & Noble for an hour but walked out without buying anything (although I took some some notes of books to add to my TBR list lol). I have so many things I’ve been meaning to read still to get to, and I don’t have much space to store books so adding more isn’t much of an option. I was tempted by art books about painting techniques because I want to learn watercolor, but buying the books would just feed the fantasy of being painter when what I really need to do is just crack open the supplies I do have and get working on it for real.

2 things: firstly, it made my little nerd heart so happy to hear you making a Lord of the Rings reference; secondly, I've found that window-shopping (whether online or in-person) and having a brief fantasy moment (when I imagine what it would be like to own *fill-in-the-blank*) is usually satisfying enough to combat that "I wants it, I needs it" drive. Not always, ofc, but mostly 🙂

Oooooh, the description of the intense desire created by a scent...wow, I feel not just seen, but exposed! I have shifted from the impulse purchase of a full bottle to spending time with samples. But I catch myself wanting to buy fragrances based on the description or the notes, and I have to laugh, because why would I buy a perfume without having smelled it? Yet, I have. Recently, fell in fantasy love with Kismet Olfactive's "Oaxaca Wedding."

  • @lynn858

    This did bring some perspective.
I'm a housekeeper, and organizing helper for a woman who's a hoarder and has a tendency to impulse over-buy.
While it wouldn't be beneficial for me to try to play counsellor - having a better understanding of what might be driving her to make purchases is useful in terms of being able to be compassionate, and to ask the right questions when we're going through things, which will allow her to let go of items.
Also, learning about her thought process prior to purchasing items is helping me suggest better options for organizing her space and things, so she can see and find what she has, and get maximum enjoyment from them. Nearly everything she buys to "fill a need" is because she can't find an item which she already owns which would absolutely meet the stated need.
If she articulates a desire for an item, or a "need" that she wants to fill, I've been able to suggest/locate items she has which could work (often forgotten about), suggest ways we can repair/refresh items that look worn, or at least take measurements or similar to ensure the new item will meet the intended need.
That won't solve the desire to acquire new items, but it will hopefully lead to fewer items coming in.

I can certainly use your script for talking yourself out of buying multiples of something you love, or something inexpensive and seemingly benign like another shade of cream blush. I can totally relate when you said when you love something, you can’t have enough. But you can totally have enough.

Oh when you spoke about the perfume. My heart stopped. My ears pricked up.
I've been deep in the perfume buying trap for 2 years. I've bought lots of bottles blindly without testing first (but watched so many RUclips videos about and read lots on Fragrantica).
I've sold 30 bottles on eBay, I've bought another 32 that I still have. I've bought insane amounts of samples that I still haven't tested after 3 months of owning them.
I have been suckered so hard into that "fantasy self smelling the best that I can" imagination trip. And I do wear perfume every day to work. Every single day my perfume gives me joy. But 32 bottles is too many. So I'm at this moment, while I've been listening to the video, taking photos of some of my perfumes to list on eBay.
It breaks my heart to do it. But I am only listing ones that I haven't worn at all, and know I never reach for.
Trying to be strong and logical about this. Shouldn't have bought them in the first place, so that there's no chance of getting attached.

It's interesting hearing you talk about how doubles don't work for you. For me, if I find a cut of a garment that I LOVE I personally will actually enjoy having duplicates. Sometimes I get a little overboard. But I do enjoy having them. I think minimalist fashion youtubers / bloggers make a good point about choosing a color palette and sticking to it though. I personally love blue, grey and black. I like some purple and berry tones sprinkled in too. A dash of green. But pink? I don't know why I bought pink. I never wear pink.

I was watching Angelice Nygvist with a video from a least a week ago and she said she was channeling you with the way she did her eye look and I was wishing you had a new video out and before Angie's video was over the RUclips notifications on my phone told me this video is here, so now I'm going to watch it. Yea! I watched I'm sure for the second time yous duping the vibes of the Natasha Denona Gold Palette last night. I love that idea of duping a look you would do with an eyeshadow palette with what you have. I have found that I have many eyeshadows and eyeshadow toppers and there's like nothing out now with eyeshadow seems to add to my collection with my aesthetic so easily now I can dupe the vibes of anything I even remotely like and save money. Plus I don't have the budget for buying makeup right now. I'm not saying I wouldn't buy like one lipgloss or lipstick at the drug store, but financially right now I have other things more important than makeup to take care of and I'm happy that's the case.
