    It seems that this scene is most likely referring to Fischer - Reshevsky, Sousse Interzonal Tournament, round 11, November 1967. Having forfeited his round 10 game against Gipslis (and having forfeited a couple games against Reshevsky in the past) Fischer arrived 10 minutes before the forfeit time, but then spent 5 more minutes doing other things before sitting down at the board. Fischer went on to win in 46 moves. Round 14 he dropped out of the interzonal when the organizers upheld his forfeit loss to Gipslis.
    Chessmetrics ranks the 56 year old Reshevsky at 23rd in the world at the time (while it places the 24 year old Fischer as 1st). However, Reshevsky was ranked by Chessmetrics as #1 in the world several times between 1942 and 1953.

    A quick Fischer story, in 2014 the strongest Chess tournament in history was held in St. Louis. One player went on an amazing SEVEN game winning streak. It was unheard of! Amazing! Everyone lauded him and even the world champion (who lost) this year said his confidence was higher because this amazing seven game winning fluke could not happen again. Of course it didn't and the guy who won seven game straight came in last place this year. But, Fischer had TWO 19+ game winning streaks in top level play (including the US Championship and World championship cycles) ! He only lost his second 20+ game winning streak (to the ex-world champion) when he lost after playing with a 102 degree fever, refusing a sick day. The man was the best....period.

      +Jim Walker And, Bobby didn't have engines to analyze positions out to nearly infinite depth the way players do these days.

    • @JimJWalker
      @JimJWalker 8 лет назад +9

      Murray Melander
      He certainly had access to quite good ones, and in 2004-5 Chessbase was quite established with databases in the millions of games. He almost played a match with Kramnik.

    • @renanbrazparente449
      @renanbrazparente449 8 лет назад +61

      +Murray Melander thats actually an advantage for bobby when it comes to winning streaks, computer analysis often works as a sort of equalizer for players, which makes winning streaks harder. In fact if you talk to a 50+ years old GM they will tell you that even amateurs are now harder to beat. In the 90s it would be routine for a GM to beat a 2000 in 20 or so moves, nowadays the 2000 player is often as well prepared as the GM in the opening and the wins require a lot more work.

    • @JimJWalker
      @JimJWalker 8 лет назад +5

      Renan Braz Parente
      A 2000 ELO chess-player has about a .05% chance of beating a 2500 ELO player. If the 2500 player does not do what his rating says, his rating will drop accordingly and visa versa.

    • @renanbrazparente449
      @renanbrazparente449 8 лет назад +19

      Jim Walker i'm not sure about your numbers of .05%, that is one in 2000, i did the math some years back, i dont remember the result and i'm to lazy to do it now but the chance is way bigger than what you say, over 20 times bigger. Nevertheless that has nothing to do with what i said. Obviously if both guys play the first 15 moves like 3000 players and the rest of the game to their true strength that benefits the weaker player, so winning streaks become harder, mr. Murray tried to argue that not having computer aid makes Fischers winning streak more impressive, and i'm saying it doesnt, quite the contrary, not having computers is what made those streaks possible in the first place. Your comment has nothing to do with my point.

    The greatest player that ever played the game, and the reason my father taught me the Ruy Lopez as my first opening when he introduced me to the game at 10 years of age!
    The game is about creativity, cunning, character, genius and intimidation--Bobby rarely drew, he was over 6' tall, athletic and strong for a chess player--he psyched them out before he even made the first move!!

In rapid tournaments it is usually 5 or 7 minutes even though whole time you have may be 15 minutes .If you have white pieces, player with black pieces starts the clock ( also arbiter may do it ).
      In last year blitz championships Carlsen arrived so late he had only 30 seconds left on clock. He still won the game though since there was increment per move .

      He is already 59 minutes late to the game . You can recognize it by looking at 00:29, where one clock shows almost 4 o'clock and the other one 5 o'clock.
      However, on second thought, if I'm right, then his flag should have been falling. Also, why is Ivanovich's minute hand is not completely vertical as it should be on the start of the game?
      By all means not a bad scene, but unfortunately not realistic either.

      +Cleverconure ? Deductive reasoning would've told you that the inquiry was for the name of the movie from which the movie clip derives.

  • @Acme633
    @Acme633 8 лет назад

    I haven't been able to see this film yet. Obviously GM "Ivanovich" was fictional and certainly did not rank fourth at the time. (Bozidar Ivanovich was from a somewhat later era). In the film, why did Fischer let his clock run out and what finally happened?

      +josofo2 You have Larsen and Najdorf on the adjacent board, so probably not.
      I would be more worried about OVERdramatization...

    • @trashl0rd
      @trashl0rd 8 лет назад +2

      +beer patzer Actually I'd say Ivanovich sounds more typical to the average American. Spassky definitely sounds "funnier." Resembles the word spaz (as in spastic), has the word 'ass' in it, ends in an "ee" sound. I can already hear the snickers in the audience.

    • @omarkhan5223
      @omarkhan5223 8 лет назад +3

      +josofo2 I believe that is Bozidar Ivanovich, the Yugoslavian player. He's rated around 2400 now.

    • @levelologist7178
      @levelologist7178 8 лет назад +6

      +Onat Özdemir I can't stop cringing. I'm American though and there are plenty of actors and producers that would have got it closer to "right." You've been watching too much news.

      +Onat Özdemir dude,, chess is a game that not everybody likes,, this movies is making chess look cooler for the people , its like hacking in movies,

      +Onat Özdemir It's called dramatization, and it is needed if you'd like your movie to be successful.

      +Onat Özdemir yeh this is absolutely horrible, and why is peter parker cast as Fischer? Fischer was 6'1, Tobey Maguire is barely 5'7, completely negates the presence that Fischer had.

  • @bobradford2637

    It seems the movie could have been better made, more accurate with names and events and with an actor that actually physically resembled Fischer. both in size and looks. Maguire is softly spoken and is boyish. However as a Fischer fan I am pleased to see a movie that's very much part of chess history.

  • @Filippirgos
    @Filippirgos 6 лет назад +4

    This movie was unfortunately very bad, not to mention how historically inaccurate it was.
    When you make a biopic it simply has to be as true to the events in real life as possible, and this movie didn't even tried.
    If you want to see a good chess movie watch "Searching for Bobby Fischer" with sir Ben Kingsley

    • @feiyu8817
      @feiyu8817 6 лет назад +1

      Fei Li dude if the movie was hisrorically accurate it would be even worst, movies have to change certain aspects of history to make their story more appealing than it actually is.

    • @martinnieva8484

      Why was it historically inaccurate? Light me with your knowledge, I'd love to read a more detailed opinion of yours.

    Had fischer really played the whole game with that much left time??? 😱😱😱

    • @tkokesh
      @tkokesh 6 лет назад

      That game was probably played at the typical time control at the time, where each player was given 2.5 hours to play their first 40 moves. However, then and now, if a player is more than an hour late to make his first move, he is forfeited.

  • @TheGroundskeeper

    Could be the worst casting decision ever. They took a small, cute, emotionally balanced actor and stuck him in the place of a lenky, brooding, awkward genius. This still bothers me years later

    • @mbarrett99
      @mbarrett99 5 лет назад +1

      If they got someone more like Fischer, it would turn off most movie-goers. The casting people went for a known quantity in the movie business.

      Totally agree man. I love Maguire from spiderman, but this was just a wrong casting of him haha. Oh well, maybe they'll try again in the future like the Steve Jobs movie (Kutcher was a disaster also there!)
