Personally, this scene reminds me very much of Hou Yifan, who was the second best female chess player in history after Judit Polgar, who also once beat her in a game. She told in one interview that when she was 7 years old, the coach of a major chess club heard about her successes and considered accepting her into the group. In the first class, he wanted to test her skills. He chose his best students and asked her to play a game with each of them. They were all boys and much older than she was. They were between 14 and 16 years old. She was only 7 and the only girl there, but she easily beat everyone. Later, they solved various tasks, practiced difficult endgames such as mate with only knight and bishop. Hou Yifan said that she had never studied chess theory before, but her solutions to these problems were the best of all in the group. After these classes, the owner of the club called her coach and said that he was ready to take her even from tomorrow because he had never seen such a talented chess child before. She later became the youngest female GM ever to win the GM title and broke Judit Polgar's record. She was 14 years old and the youngest GM at the world then, both among girls and boys.
Long ago, I was one of 16 boards against Sofia Polgar when she was in her teens. She crushed us all. I was 4th last to be crushed. ...A beautiful experience that I'll never forget.

Sequels with increasingly absurd plots as the writers slowly run out of ideas, and when they're completely out of ideas, there will be another two seasons....
When i was 15, i played over 200 games against a grandmaster, only won once. The practice mixed with his teachings made me pretty much unstoppable, as noone has beaten me since, and im 36 now. This was a good scene, i like it.
Many years ago, when I was a senior in high school, I was asked to help with an elementary school chess club of kids up to 3rd grade I ended up playing simultaneous chess against about 15 or so 6-9 year olds. I was not at all unhappy when they had to go home on the bus. I seem to remember leaving at least one or two losing positions behind.😳
The greatest and funniest thing: She told Mr. Shaible how she did with that sweet chocolate-smeared face like "I just shaved them off one on another!" :-D

I agree with a lot of the comments this was a very interesting and unique Netflix series. It seemed like it was based on a true story even though we knew it wasn't. And I do agree that the young actress playing Beth did an amazing job and I think she did an even better job than the older Beth. The fact that they didn't have a lot of huge stars and tried to make it you know very Hollywood was the way to go and even though I didn't like chess and I don't play it it didn't matter because the writing and the acting was so amazing you didn't care if you like chess or not. It's one of those shows that you wish would never end and you kept hoping there was more episodes after each one. I know it ended well and in a good place but boy it would have been nice to have a few more episodes in between that and the scene in Russia.
I like how the show acknowledged but never obsessed over her gender. Star Wars and Marvel seem to think that beating you over the head is the best approach.
Thank you for clarifying that. I am sure that if not for your comment, the whole world would have died wondering what the name of the actor was. It's so sad that there is no way to search the inernet for basic information about who played what in popular series and movies.

@@Hailey_Paige_1937 Yep. Amazing series
I'm glad Beth fought Gotham chess
Absolutely brilliant series, I hope there’s never a sequel
At last, someone who realizes that a story well told is complete.
Yes, if this were network tv, there would be sequels to keep the cash rolling in. Sequels with increasingly absurd plots as the writers slowly run out of ideas, and when they're completely out of ideas, there will be another two seasons....
None of Anya's mastery would be as significant without Isla Johnson.
These high school chess students learned what it’s like playing against a gifted player. It was a learning experience to say the least
My favourite series after stranger things.
Truly amazing
It was simply genius. We had watched the 7 episodes in a breath.
The greatest and funniest thing: She told Mr. Shaible how she did with that sweet chocolate-smeared face like "I just shaved them off one on another!" :-D
This is a great series and parallel Beth's life.
Netflix India this is the content we want......not Fabulous Lives of Bollywood Lives.
But I like Bollywood.
The Bollywood version of The Queen's Gambit will have singing & dancing scenes.
who's we? bollywood is awesome
Nothing about this show was a let-down. I felt so much of it. I waited years to watch it, just because i dont jump on "new" or "hype." Well, im glad i watched it, it brought tears to my eyes several times.
Beth casually eating chocolate is such a power move
The child actor deserves more recognition. ❤
The show is brilliant.
The best series in the world 😍😍👌🏻💯
“Look! That girl is playing 12 people at once, she must be a genius!”
People: “Checkmate.” X 12
Girl: “Damn.”
I like how the show acknowledged but never obsessed over her gender. Star Wars and Marvel seem to think that beating you over the head is the best approach.
refreshing
I coundn't agree more!
@@cleversonsutil4495 even with the letter "L"?
As others have noted, this talented young actress did a fantastic job! Her name is Isla Johnston.
I liked her the best in the whole show.
Thank you for clarifying that. I am sure that if not for your comment, the whole world would have died wondering what the name of the actor was. It's so sad that there is no way to search the inernet for basic information about who played what in popular series and movies.
@@natpaul4965 I do it for people like you.
Isla Johnston didn't receive more credit for her amazing performance as young Beth because Anya Taylor Joy hit such a grand slam home run with her own award winning performance.
I'll first state that this was an epic movie of true brilliance in all categories! I'm even watching it a 2nd time reliving that emotional tug at the heart series of excellence!
