People make a big deal out of the whiskey plank for a reason. It's a milestone and a cause for celebration. The boat is not anywhere near completion, but the hull's structure, the thing that makes it a boat, is DONE. After installing the locust sheer strake and the second to last plank, a cedar one just below it, it's time to knock in the shutter plank for the starboard side, which is also that all-important "whiskey plank."
Why whiskey? Well, it's just having to do with celebration. Have whatever libation or celebration you want after the last plank on Arabella goes in-it's not about the dram. In boatbuilding, the whiskey plank is about the biggest milestone you can reach before launch, and we plan to launch the boat in 2023. We'll announce the date very soon.

Acorn to Arabella is a boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur boat builder building a 38' wooden boat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

As a viewer, the whiskey plank was a big deal. It was tremendously satisfying to see the hull completed so professionally, in the same way that it will be when pilot house is done and the deck is finished. However, the most enjoyable part of this channel is the journey. Well done guys.

One thing I love about Steve is his almost ludicrous will power. A lot of people do large projects in new pursuits and teeter on a razors edge the entire time, always close to failure and unable to get their bearings. Steve is stubborn enough to get stuck in and figure out the right way, every time, to keep the protect in sight and keep progress being made. Mad respect to him and the entire team!

@@keatoncampbell820 I mean it was really rough in the beginning. Steve and Alix at times looked exhausted but, with determination they pulled through. I have been following/watching this build since episode 16. So, not only was this the 200th episode that I’ve watched in “real time”, but it was also the whiskey plank episode. I get what you’re saying about it being somewhat anti-climactic, Steve, but it’s still quite an accomplishment. It’s weird bc I’ve been following this for so long that I’m personally and emotionally invested (No, I haven’t sent any money, but dammit, I think I’m actually going to now. Haha). The sense of fulfillment that even I will experience when this boat splashes is nothing compared to what you will feel and how proud you must be to stand back and look at something so HUGE and MASSIVE and time consuming, that YOU made with your own hands. Just amazing bro. Bravo! Just constantly in awe at your work ethic.

The most special part of the Whisky Plank for me is that it represents the struggle everyone went through during the Covid-19 pandemic. Like Steve and the crew, many of us were underway on our own projects, trying to build our own unique vessels to navigate our lives. Many people's dreams were interrupted or dashed outright. In the face of all that has happened, to keep toiling away so that one day it may be done is an inspiration for us followers. While you enjoy your whisky plank celebration, don't forget to pour out a dram for those who left their projects too soon. RIP Covid victims, Mrs. Atkin, et al... Big time appreciation for the whole team here. Congratulations!

Been following along for a very long time. I also watch a bunch of other boating channels (salt and tar, sampson boat co, etc) and they all do things differently. Absolutely amazing craftsmanship and in order to accomplish that takes great thinking and lots and lots of patients. I recently built a cabin bed for one of my boys and I am in the process of building an almost duplicate one for my other son and not matter how patient I think I am I still end up making mistakes nothing big but ones that are frustrating anyways. My wife doesnt understand how I can watch something so boring as watching this slow ship building process and I told her you have to really appreciate what goes into and then absorb all of the tricks and traits that go into the building process. I did that all the way to 28 at which time I quit drinking and started spending my time doing more meaningful things. I sure wish I wouldn’t have wasted all those years. I did learn a lot over those years I can definitely give advice on what not to do with your life but that’s about it. It makes me feel good knowing there are younger people like yourself being more productive with your time than I was. Our time on this earth isn’t promised and I can assure you with everything in my soul you don’t want to waste the time you’re given drinking it away. I’m not judging those who drink alcohol lots of people are able to do it constructively I just wasn’t one of those people.

It is nice to see the hull "finished", so to say. However, we, well most of us, know there is still plenty of work to be done on the hull. Plugging, fairing [planing], caulking/"corking", puttying, fairing again/tons of sanding, priming, more sanding, estimating the water line, bottom and top paint (several coats), bright work (if there is any), oh and I forgot, shaping the fore and aft stems, installing through hull fittings and sealing them, the prop shaft and rudder, and I am quite sure I forgot a few things on the hull/exterior; below the deck line.
So, yeah, another major box checked, but the outer hull really isn't "complete", yet.
Still, congrats on another milestone, as it were. 😎 Loving every tick mark, as a viewer. Keep up the great work. Every check mark is closer to launch day.

Many have been watching since inception, I joined later after my partner who is an artisan carpenter, introduced me to the channel. This is an incredible group of dedicated individuals and the intern are awesome. It is such a pleasure to watch this journey and I wonder if we will see some of the far off places Arabella will journey?...

Congratulations. Although I do think this is a great achievement, I believe the whole Whiskey Plank milestone has become a little "over-dramatized." I would say the same thing to another wooden boat building project we all love "out west." The most impressive aspect of this build is the everyday and unseen continued grind and march forward to launching as Steve is aware. Keep grinding and moving forward guys!! DD

Laying the keel, whiskey plank, and launch. Those are the big ones for any build.

In Norway the term is "fydlingsplank": the plank that fills the gap. This was celebrated with a wee dram, the "fydlingsskål", skål = cheers.

What an achievement. Huge congratulations.I wonder looking back, what you would have done differently? Or as your boat building skills improve, look back at your earlier work and go - ooh that could have been better :)

Good morning A2A crew! It was so cool watching the live video. KP had me in stitches when they took the camera that was filming the live. Ran amok with their friends was hysterical. So here we are with our coffee and the show. It is so nice seeing the planking done. Yes! The marking off of the planks on the list! What a cool episode. Have a great week.
