HEMI Tick sound / noise. Lifter or Exhaust?

Поделиться
HTML-код
  • Опубликовано: 13 сен 2024
  • This is one of the most common issues with the 5.7 Hemi Ram engines. Over time the heat cycling and expansion and contraction of the head and manifold cause the bolts to break. This typically causes an exhaust leak that is more noticeable when the vehicle is cold and will gradually fade away as the engine reaches temperature.
If your Hemi RAM truck is making a ticking noise you can easily determine whether or not it is exhaust related by checking the manifold bolts as shown in this video.

Yep that's typical. Usually once the manifolds heat up they expand and close the gap where the exhaust leak is. That's why so many of them only make noise when cold.

I bought a new 2022 Dodge Challenger R/T 5.7L Hemi June 2022 - my husband and I spent 10 years saving for our dream car. I noticed there was a ticking noise form the engine which I thought was the "HEMI tick." It was a slight ticking noise at cold start coming from the passenger side and then after a few seconds it would stop ticking.
In August, 2022, we had put 2000 miles on the car and we were on a weekend road trip.
The engine started to make loud noises and started shaking. Then the engine and electrical light turned. Then suddenly, the motor stalled and shut off while in motion on the highway going 80 mph!!!! 😳 😱 🤬
My husband had to drive by using strange maneuvers, putting in N with brakes and pumping the gas, when it idled it would shut off. Had to do this all the way to the dealer since the tow truck would have been late by an hour and the service department would have been closed.
The dealer said it was a cylinder 5 misfire - which ended up a valve dropping and cracking the cylinder - they had to change the long block and the intake manifold, which they are still waiting for parts.
One of the techs insinuated it was the MDS system that closes 4 valves at highway speed to reduce fuel consumption.
Till this date, the car is still at the dealer, which is an hour away from our house.
I found out there is a class action lawsuit against FCA due to the 5.7 and 6.4 HEMI that are not supercharged, having issues with the MDS engines stalling issues which report from NHTSA of the same thing happening to people on the highway, which is a huge safety issue, especially while driving at highway speeds.
I didn’t know about the Class Action because it wasn’t showing up on the Internet until late June once a complaint was filed. If I would’ve known I would’ve not purchased a car.
This is my daily driver and my husband and I are seriously scared for my safety. Dodge doesn't want to do a buyback and I am having to get an attorney involved because it is not reasonable a new car has these issues.

Same noise. Mine is a ram 2018 with the 5.7 hemi. From dudes I hear it's either an exhaust manifold gasket, or others say it's piston slap from 'bad lifters'. This is helpful, as I want to be more educated before I take it to an independent mechanic. I'd never take it to a dealer. Just far too expensive

The lifter tick is a real issue, it is only a matter of time until the roller lifters fail and wipe out the CAM shaft and send a bunch of metal into the rest of the engine. This is fixable, you will have to replace all the lifters and the CAM shaft.

But I'm traveling and local mechanic here in colorado said that was the lifters. So Now I will try to see if I can get to the bolts of the exhaust and check by myself. Since again it sounds EXACTLY as the one on this video. They want to charge me 3500 U$ for the complete replace of lifters and camshaft. Which is somehow aceptable for the work on it.

    • @ChrisVaughnTech
      @ChrisVaughnTech  2 года назад +2

I would do the same as you and try to verify if it's an exhaust leak or lifter noise. It can be tricky sometimes as the two sound very similar.
But if you listen under the hood very close when you hear the sound you should be able to tell the difference. The lifter noise would be more of a metallic tapping noise that sounds like metal tapping together lightly.
The exhaust leak sounds more like air being released than metal on metal contact. If you listen very close you may be able to tell the difference under the hood.
It is very common for lifters to fail on these engines. I see it quite a bit... But you have to make sure that's the problem before throwing that kinda money into it.

Check the manifold surface with a straightedge , you will notice most times they are either WARPED of just a crappy casting ... for a couple bucks , have them machined and make them true .... if not , the tick will return within time !! :-( might as well do it properly the first time and never touch it again

Really that depends on how deep they are broken off and your skill level. The best way to extract the broken bolts is to weld a nut onto them but you have to be very careful. If you are sure it's the exhaust manifold making the noise then yes you can drive it safely. If however it is a lifter tap then driving it like that can do further damage.

@@penguinc2653 keep an eye on the noise while you are driving and at any stops. If it's a lifter then it will get worse over time. If it's the exhaust then it should quiet down as it gets warmer

This sounds like my issue. Have a similar tick on cold start ups. But why if it's bolts does it stop after running for roughly 10-15 seconds?

I had the same thing and on a newer Ram 5.7. I was told its due to inadequate oil flow to the top end on cold starts. I changed to a low viscosity and it helped but it didn't solve the problem. My manifold bolts were fine as the truck was new. It was a top end tick that never went completely away.
