The 3 DAY Timing Chain Job On My CHEAP V6 Camaro Is DONE

  • I bought my $4,000 2011 Chevy Camaro RS with failed timing chains. The 3.6L LLT V6 might make 300HP but it's notorious for timing chain failure. The sludge build up inside this engine probably contributed to the chain guides wearing out at only 128,000 miles. Replacing the chains is no small job but I do think it could be done in any home garage. Just take your time and use this video as a reference: • Melling Timing Kit for...

      @@WatchJRGo that V6 makes maybe 15 - 20 more HP at a very high rpm, and that old LT-1 makes a lot more torque at much more favorable rpms. I'll take the older V8 any day. Plus, they respond well to mods and they don't sludge up like this modern junk. I love the 90s LT-1! And then, that sound....... mmmmm

    As a GM tech, one tip is that you want to pin the gas pedal to the floor and crank it before firing it up after doing timing chains. That disables the fuel injectors and prevents the engine from firing while still allowing the engine to build some oil pressure. Occasionally these 3.6L engines as well as the 2.4L engines will jump timing if you just fire them up immediately due to the lack of oil pressure present to back the newly installed spring assisted tensioners. The tensioners use a "locking/ratcheting" mechanism to hold tension, so after they have cycled oil pressure through them initially, they're good to go.

    Hi guys. I just did one of these, complete timing set, the chains were absolutely stretched to the max, and ridiculously loose. The crank reluctor wheel had also slipped. So, I did a new crank, all new timing chain components, all new guides, chains, phazers, crank gear, crank idler gears, plus all new tensioners. Pulled left side head also, due to very low compression, middle cylinder. Found both intake valves both just slightly kissed enough to explain the very low compression in that cylinder. Put it all back together, and it's a sweet running car now. We just let the motor/transmission/front suspension, all out with the subframe, one nice complete unit. It's stupid easy to drop that drivetrain, as long as you have a lift, and a big metal table. I call mine the operating table. We had this last one, motor/trans/lower suspension/subframe, from pulling the running car in the shop, out, on the table, in slightly less than 45 minutes. That's with myself, and a guy that works for me doing it. Sweet car to work on.

    A joint design and development with Holden here in Australia... JR we have hundreds of thousands of them on the road over here where they've proven to be ultra reliable when regularly serviced. We even exported them to SAAB for their high end models... You may need to drop the sump to clean the oil pickup screen given yours had so much sludge.....

    • @_dmfd
      @_dmfd 4 года назад +1

      Speaking of Saab, they had a really bad design with the pickup screen that would clog and starve oil back when GM started doing the OG 9³ / 9⁵ from 98 - 04 with the ecotech. They made a PCV update to fix them tho. Super easy fix but people pick them up dirt cheap, don't wanna maintain them and drive them into the ground. Kills me man.

And on the Acadia or any SUV you have to pull out the motor or drop it from the bottom to do it.... It seems that the 3.6 always has timing issues.... But I am surprised that they got rid of the 3800 motor.... I think that border was the best motor that Pontiac ever push out..... It was a very reliable engine..

    this is waiting for me on my torrent 3.6. it's all disassembled already, it just needs my time... this is a very good refresh video for everything I've learned in theory so far. good channel!
    for cleaning the surface I used the white disc instead of green, 100 grit instead of 80. it takes a bit longer but I believe it's more friendly for aluminum.

Instead I bought an Impala with a 3.5, the 3.6 was so much more powerful and for a few years I thought I should have gotten a car with a 3.6, boy I am glad I did not. @@kwinterburn THAT is the problem with modern auto engineers. They think they are smarter than they really are.
      Case in point: I think it is BMW who no longer put a dipstick in their engines to check oil level. Instead they use a complex sensor and the computer to monitor it.
      Another example: Ford's IWE system in 2004 to 2010 F150's. The engineers decided "hey, let's engage the 4wd ALL the time, and use engine vacuum to DISengage it"
      That's like having your bedroom light on ALL the time and you have to stand there and hold the switch OFF when you want to turn off the light. Brilliant? .......NO!

    My girlfriend's 2.4 Malibu snapped a timing guide at 60,000 miles. Car had been serviced somewhere between the "severe" and "normal" service schedules by me since it was purchased new. I used a Cloyes kit and fixed it. All new chains and guides. I had never attempted that kind of engine work before. Thousands of miles later, still good.
    I didn't learn my lesson and bought a used 2013 Camaro LFX. I hope I don't have to fix the timing system, but I know I could do it. Thanks, JR.

    I have loved watching this saga unfold. I am jelous of the $4,000 Camaro find. I am entirely dumbfounded by the variable timing. I have never seen one opened up before. It looks incredibly complicated, but also looks like GM did what they could to try and idiotproof it. I like it. Nice work. 130,000 miles was way too early to let a Camaro ride off into the sunset.

      @Susan curranthere is an Aussie mechanic with a video here on RUclips that will show you the dumbsh@t engineering GM did that causes this. My wife's SUV crapped the rear chain at 77k. Always serviced, synthetic oil and good filters. GM warranted it by slapping in new chains and that was it. Within 50k miles, same service/care...same thing. Then I research it and found all kinds of info on the garbage PVC set up and how it ruins the one side. We flushed the living hell out of the motor, replaced the phasers, tensioners, guides, water pump, t-stat- anything consumable- and modified the PVC to vent/equalize the pressure for proper drain back. Change the oil ever 3,500 to 4K and never an issue again. GM does stupid S like this under the guise of "Cost savings," but in the end, pays more in recalls and shrinking market share...Korea & Japan are quite thankful for the market share. My wife will never buy another GM, she hopes they go broke after the debacle they sold us. Funny thing? She is a doctor and, if a brand or company treats her well, she sticks to it.
